I have a video series on the cognitive functions for anyone who wants to delve more deeply into it. I didn't want to get too granular in this video since that's been done elsewhere on the channel.
I have many random thoughts on this topic that didn't make it into the video. One of these was that people - content creators in this case - have different ways of understanding and explaining the types. Specifically, these emerge from the personality type of the person communicating the information. Our own type influences the way we see the other types. Based on that, it makes sense to listen to many different people explaining these things. You might find that you resonate better with other descriptions and approaches.
If I had to summarise this video in steps it would be as follows:
    1. Identify factors (age, sex, language barriers, external pressure, maturity etc) that might muddy the water so they can be accounted for and worked around.
    2. Follow your physiological feelings. Figure out what feels good/bad/draining/energising and so on. These reactions will give you a good foundation for seeing the skeleton of your personality.
    3. Contrast and compare your traits with the people around you with the aim of placing yourself on a spectrum. Be honest with yourself during this. You might be decent at something but not great at it or kind of bad but not terrible. Not everything will be extreme.
    4. Do the same as the above except for situations. Try to make these situations and scenarios that many people encounter so you can see a wide variety of approaches.
    5. "Try on" different types. Basically, act like a certain type to see whether it feels natural to you. That will be a great barometer. If you can't approach life like a certain type then it's unlikely to be your true type.
(I typed this comment out once before but it seems like RUclips screwed me over and deleted it)

It's interesting to see people's weaker functions become stronger over time. My father (ESFJ) and I (INTP) had a rocky relationship for a couple decades. He had no idea how to interact with me when I was young. I didn't respond to anything in a way with which he could relate. Likewise, I felt completely misunderstood and lonely for many years. We both tried, but common ground was hard to find. All the same functions, just with a different hierarchy. Now, after nearly half a century, we get along great. We still process things differently, but we've found we most often come to the same conclusions, even if we take very different paths to come to those conclusions. I certainly appreciate that MANY of the "because that's the way it's always been" Si-isms I grew up with actually DO hold up under scrutiny and can be backed up with empirical data... and he certainly seems to appreciate when I tell him I can now see that he was right... and sometimes guide him through areas where he was wrong, as he's actually developed the ability to revise his opinions to a degree I never imagined possible. Who'd've thought?

We still get on each other’s nerves living under one roof. I hate her for lacking critical thinking ability. She buys into whatever people told her but never what I told her. This was heartwarming to read. I (too probably an INTP) grew up to a likely ESFP & ENFP family, and the lack of sharing of decider functions made me doubt if we would ever be able to see eye to eye. Seeing this comment reminded me that well, we don't necessarily have to right now, we can accept the differences and move on, and not settle on what is "true". Especially with ESFP, it would often look as if we aren't even speaking the same language (at least with ENFP our perceptions matched most of the time). I guess I don't necessarily have to agree with them to benefit from their perspective. And they don't need to agree with me for me to do my best to warn them when they get stuck with their Fi

Another thing that can make it tricky is mental health. If, for example, you take an interest in trying to figure out your type when you are in the middle of a state of depression, you are likely to mistype since depression makes people think and behave quite differently than they usually do. The same goes for times when you are having a chronic illness. What can help here is to ask family members to tell you what you were like as a kid, or before you became ill, because when you are seriously ill for quite a while, it can become hard to remember what feeling healthy was like.
Another tricky thing is to find out that you are not quite matching the descriptions of any type possibly because you simply don't think the way an average person does. Maybe you've had childhood traumas that have shaped the way you think. Moreover, you may find out that you were born with a mental condition such as mild downs syndrome, autism or brain damage of some sort. If that's the case, you simply aren't going to 100% fit any profile.
I, for example, was born having such high fevers that I would sometimes hallucinate. My temps would get so high that I was in real danger of brain damage if my family didn't act quickly to bring my fever down. This finally went away when I was five without any of the many specialists we went to figuring it out for sure.
On top of that, I had weak eye muscles so that I was unable to cross my eyes, track moving objects or even focus on a stationary object well enough to see it singly. I had double vision. This also means that I had no depth perception. The specialists didnt figure this out and come up with a solution until I was eight. The solution - eye exercises - only works if I do them regularly and if I'm not too tired.
As you might imagine, these challenges made me miss out on a lot of things that most boys experience as kids. I was totally unlike my peers and quite unpopular. This was the 70's, long before the movement to reduce bullying got underway, especially in a small, rural town in the Midwest.
These challenges, along with the personalities of the family members I spent most of my time with and perhaps genetics to some degree, made into the sort of person I am today.
To keep a long story shorter, those characteristics match up, it turns out, with autism according to assessments that my wife and her colleagues had me take a few years ago.
Therefore, it is difficult to put me squarely into one MBTI type. The closest we've come is a mix of INTJ, INFJ, INTP and INFP. In the enneagram theory I come out as Type 5 with aspects of both wing 3 and wing 4.
Figuring this out has been interesting and difficult. There's still a lot of debate going on over how to type neurotypical people. Perhaps we need a new personality theory specifically for it.

I think a list of things you're terrible at, and things that make you naturally coil up into a ball, may be a faster way of whittling down the choices!
Also, if you have a working knowledge of the functions, but could go either way on whether your preference for that function is introverted or extraverted (i.e. you're good at both), this is a good clue that it is higher up in your stack. If you definitely have a preference for one orientation over the other, and perhaps one sounds evil or alien, then this is a good clue that the major function letter is lower in your stack.
For instance, let's pretend for the moment I don't yet know my type (I'm an INTJ). I find Ni and Ne tasks both quite easy, so that would put "N" up near the top somewhere. Ti and Te is much the same story, so that would also be up near the top somewhere for "T". Fi and Fe is a very different story. I know what I value very strongly, and have strong emotions underneath the mask, but I find other people baffling and make social blunders often. That would indicate "F" is lower down. As for Se and Si, I can relate to Se easily enough, but Si seems quite alien to me, and my understanding of it is more academic than natural lived experience. This would be a good clue for "S" being down the stack.
After that point, you only have a few types to narrow in on.

This is so useful! Often the things we have trouble with are more indicative of what our type lacks. For me, it was pretty easy to lock down Fi (it just stood out) especially into my 20s. Then I could eliminate xSFP because I am terrible at the immediate response towards the outside world, and I rarely get thrills from sensory things. As a painter I'm also often distracted by my concept of color rather than the actual colors of the paint/pixels I see. So xNFP. Between INFP and ENFP is where I had a little bit of problem, but just as you said, I compared my adverse relation with Fe and Ni. Ni feels more like the critical (doomerist, self-limiting) and Fe more like the adversary (feeling directly attacked by it). Therefore, INFP.

A lot of the time even Si dom people are better than me at this (They would be, because Se being their 5th function can also be strong by proxy through 1st). • @DreamQuillRose
      @DreamQuillRose Год назад +3

As a type similar to yours, INTP, I would add that the reason for "bad reflexes" has more to do with our preferred types of daily activites. Usually cerebral ones. But with enough time to develop muscle memory, I find that I'm actually pretty comepent. It just akes me longer than other types to get good at an active video game, for example. So bad reflexes aren't something you're doomed to have.
The nice thing, though, is when I'm in a situation to actually experience something physically - running, throwing something, swimming, even just mousing with my non-dominant hand (improves coordination AND builds neural networking, good to ward off Alzheimer's, also just in case the tendonitis in my dominant hand's wrist gets worse) - I find I enjoy being active for the sheer novelty of it. New experiences are fun.

If you’re a Te dom whose first introverted function is Ni; and you’re around other introverts and other people who want you to be more polite or more emotional, you could present as an INFJ - and then decide the function order is wrong and then believe you’re an ISTP… but know intuitively that you’re actually an Extravert, but you also like to work alone on lots of things (because people don’t always like you being in charge). If you know that your intuition is introverted because options overload you as opposed to filling you with possibility - then Te Se Ni Fi… ENTJ. But people might SEE you as an INTJ. Then, you take some personality test that is kind of accurate and you respond with lots of consideration, you come out as Fi Ni Se Te (ISFP) or Ni Fi Te Se (INTJ) as a close second… why?
Because you’re a maturing Te Se Ni Fi who is living in their SHADOW because you can’t be who you are/were… you’re made to live in that Fi world that you didn’t want to be in - which IS the Te world, but just the other side of that coin.
But when I think about my entire life and who I was at each period of time and how I grew and when things “turned on”…
ENTJ is so IMMEDIATELY obvious. Born mechanically inclined, school was very easy, I said what was on my mind (not ever thinking I was hurting someone, that was nothing I wanted to do ever); I was very active; but also LOVED video games, especially RPGs. But got really good at platformers, etc… couldn’t have many friends because I was bullied and tormented constantly for being a RUNT named Tarzan. And my parents didn’t have too many friends. So, relative isolation. I was really good at Taekwondo by age 9, though. Very coordinated. Can still learn anything I want. Anyway, at 39 years old… Facing Fi for the last 10 years has been an EXISTENTIAL NIGHTMARE. Cutting out all the reasons why.
Identity has always eluded me in a general sense… and building skills was my means of trying to find out who I was.
Always with a sense of destiny.

I actually found that it was learning about the cognitive functions that solidified my confidence in my type. I always waffled between INTJ and INTP-- I felt like I was either regularly failing at the J or overcoming my P, and I do actually relate to a lot of traits of both. It was comparing the cognitive functions that really brought it into focus for me. I go through shorter periods of wondering if my 'N' is real or not, but I rarely have much doubt about it. I've also wondered whether my T/F is really as pronounced as I think it is, but again, I don't have to think about it very long to conclude that I am definitely a Thinker type. It's kind of interesting to me that in terms of the INTJ vs INTP thing, in a lot of ways it is easier for me to think of myself as a 'failed' INTJ rather than an INTP who has sufficiently mastered the fine art of adulting to the extent that I can fool people into thinking I'm better at it than I am.

I stumbled across all this about two years ago and it was life-changing. Multiple versions of the MBTI tests, plus of course all the breakdowns and explications of the function stack, testified with adamant unanimity (and along with that goes how vividly it "clicked" with me, of course) that I'm an INFP. But you know, something was still missing, somehow not fully clicking. There were aspects of the "textbook" INFP, particularly its perhaps stereotypically "spacey", hippie-flower-child-ish qualities, that, while, yes, I could definitely understand them, on some level relate to them, even perceive how at times in my life I was inclined in that direction, the simple fact was that they were definitely NOT who I am now, indeed they signalled something I more or less consciously rejected, even if that rejection developed over a long evolution. I will add that further refining my type to an INFP-T added helpful nuance, but, still, some piece of the puzzle was missing. Then I did the Enneagram test and came out as a 4w5, and the descriptions given for a 4w5 definitely rang true with me. But the-e-e-nnn....I thought, "Has anyone examined what it means to be an INFP 4w5?" I hunted for it on Google and discovered that, yes indeed, they had. It was when I read about an INFP 4w5, and, significantly, the ways in which an INFP 4w5 veers away from the "textbook" INFP in certain respects--and what do you know, they were precisely the respects I had long felt were off-kilter for me in the standard model--that it all came together like magic.

Think of our brain as a computer. The introverted part represents the software. The extraverted part is the hardware. If you are an introvert, than relying more on the software (inner part) may feel like a natural first reaction rather than active engagement in the external environment. And vice versa for extraverts. Life teaches us to balance. Heavily relying on X makes us neglect the much needed Y. In order to solve life’s challenges that are presented to us, we need to figure out how to properly use all of our cognitive functions (software + hardware). Let’s reframe things. Is it hard to look inside someone’s mind (even our own) and be able to say which cognitive functions we use? Probably. Since it is highly abstract in nature, this will represent a challenge for most of us. So, how can we reframe the “problem”? Decode information and search for connection between it and cognitive preference. Yes, it is scientific. No, it doesn’t change over time. 1. You may become better at learning how to use your cognition in order to function better. 2. Experiencing changes in life means that you will fill you database with new variables and mind content. Best case scenario, you will learn to rely on your lateral thinking ability and look at things differently while remaining open to possibilities. Worst case scenario, it will represent an unmovable barrier between you and the world.
I will leave a word associations below to each cognitive function. In case you are interested, you can do further research on those and find the truth on your own. The best way for us to learn is through direct exposure to information. We train our mind to think deeply and make individual synaptic connections free from those being conditioned by others. Ti - logical reasoning, Fe - group cohesion (external sensitivity to the needs of others), Te - metrics based approach, Fi - wheel of emotions (internal emotional sensitivity), Se - form of concrete thinking that relies on exteroceptors, Si - interoceptors and homeostasis, Ne - brainstorming, Ni - mind mapping. Ti and Te are both focused on data analysis. Fi and Fe are both attuned to remaining connected to an emotional component (either personal or shared with a group). Si and Se are forms of concrete thinking. Ni and Ne are forms of abstract thinking. Engaging in deeper analysis and evaluating things individually could help you fill in the blanks and gradually become aware of you personal cognitive preferences.

    We all have three "types":
    1) Our public persona, that we project onto most people. This is the most curated and often a complete fabrication just to enable us to function in society
    2) Our private persona, that we project onto our "Nearest and dearest". This is also curated, maybe less so, but often times a partial or complete fabrication too.
    3) Our personal person, that only we know about. Our real self. No one see's this, often not even our own consciousness until we find ourselves in extreme stress situations. And because we happily lie to ourselves this is also at least a partial fabrication.
Thus the reason people get "Typing" others wrong is because they only really see a persons public persona.
And The reason people get "Typing" themselves wrong is because they only really see a mashup of all three personas...all of which are a fabrication to a greater or lesser extent.
So to have a hope of even getting close to typing somone else we need to get to know them at a private level at least, and have a hope of getting close to typing ourselves we need to stop lying to ourselves and lose the curated mashups we like to show everyone.
The best (and only) way to observe someones real personality (especially ourselves) is to put them under extreme stress repeatedly. This is exactly what military basic training does.
Everything else will at best produce a lie more or less.
Be really honest: When is the last time you held a mirror up to yourself and were brutally and utterly honest about your behaviours?

@@Pabz2030 INTP here. That may be for some, but it's not always that extreme. I act pretty much consistently true to type wherever I am. Even to the point where I break certain social rules despite knowing people will think me weird or slightly rude or even juvenile for it - like ducking under a length of chain to join a line of people (behind the last person, not to cut the line) instead of following a longer, convoluted path.
Different personas come from which behavior is called for by which situations. But the underlying person still chooses the persona to display in a given situation. What behaviors they choose reflect their type. In my above example, INTPs are often considered slightly clueless to social standards. Really, I think we just choose to ignore those social conventions that aren't important. I duck under gates because it's the straightest way to the target location - especially if it's the end of the day and I have sore, throbbing feet.
It's not obliviousness. Social censure is something I just choose to ignore in situations like that. By the same token, I often break into sprints inside large buildings just to get where I'm going faster. Running is healthy. My logic is, why not take the opportunity to get my circulation going, raise my energy level, and brain processing power? When people assume I'm late, I tell them, "No, this is how I wake up in the morning." A two-minute sprint from the car does it superbly. No need for coffee or other stimulants.
I run even when other people automatically say, "Don't run inside the building" which has been drilled into us all from childhood (ever wonder if we'd all be way healthier if that was not the case?). Yes, you might run into someone, but I've been doing it for 30 years and I think it happened maybe once, and not particularly hard. I don't run at full speed, so I can swerve around things in my path. I run intelligently, not mindlessly.
I run even when it embarrasses the people I'm with. I tell them they ought to run, too. Sometimes they do.
The funny thing is, at home you'd think I had a completely different persona. I'm sedentary when at home, in front of a screen of one kind or another, or doing crafts at a desk. But I'm the same person, with the same logic. I may behave differently in different circumstances, but they're all according to my type's logic.

It would also do good for the reputation of mbti if people didn't just identify themselves with a label a random website gave them because at that point it really is just astrology, and instead focused on learning and self reflection.

I suspect that looking for stress responses and associating those with function 4 can be helpful. What do I/others suddenly focus on when stressed out that we don’t in the everyday? When stressed, I suddenly care a lot about about efficiency and am bothered by clutter (Te).
I’ve similarly seen some pretty clear patterns regarding Function 8 and attempts to exert control. When I feel the need to make things go my way, I try to argue logic or delve into research in order to argue (Ti). Another key here is that these attempts (in my case arguments) are rarely successful at fixing the situation; they’re usually just distractions/a side show.
The reason I think these might be some of the best places to start are because they tend to be uncharacteristic and dramatic behaviors, but you can use them to start making educated guesses about the more subtle everyday patterns.
So in typing myself, I might start by looking at what two types have Te/Ti in the 4th/8th slots.

Oh! Trying out different types sounds fun, but I would have to plan it. A spreadsheet, or at least a notebook, to record the results. What did I eat? How did others react? Did I want to quit my job or move to a smaller home?
Pretty sure I am INFJ, but tested INTJ for a while. Work in an analytical/chemistry/engineering environment. Many said I was too free sharing ideas and helping others so I finally tried being more self-centered...for a week. Horrible! Productivity went down. Motivation went down. I just needed to help others in ways which were more mutually beneficial. Worthwhile experiment.
Rather than risk damaging relationships, is there a better place to try the other types on? I would want something where you actually are trying to get something done, but failing at it wouldn't be too big a risk. ENFJ may be fun. I could walk in those clothes for a while.
ESFP would be scary, but I may learn something...if I didn't over plan it. LOL! Definitely N and J, so experimenting with S and P would be just for fun. Great to have an ESFP friend for balance, but...wow! Plus the E, which I have to schedule for!!! Oh shoot! Forget it! Even as an experiment it is way too much!

Still, I think, Nathan's approach of key dichotomy questions is relevant as well. It's like some close types or most often mistyped types may have several similar properties, but there is a question (or questions), the answer to which can strictly define where you belong and where you don't. That's how I realised I'm not an INTP, though someone can type me as one in situations when I feel safe.
    *****
Also, concerning situations: can some types act in different ways depending on the situation (e.g., I'm a pretty collected, nervous and avoidant on public INTJ, but in a narrow circle of friends I can organise a funny (sometimes creepy) mess that is more expectable from some ENFJ/ENFP); or it is a mistype? And who are you actually - the one who deals with public and the wider world or the one who manifests oneself in a safespace?

I think understanding my shadow helped with my personal growth. I've been working on my communication skills and anger management skills to get the parts of myself i disliked under control. Is there anyone who is well versed in typology who wants to help me type myself? I feel like I can fit into any type and it’s so confusing. I can genuinely see myself as any type.

Okay let's start with do you feel drained after you've hung out with a crowd of people at a social gathering or someplace? If you resonate with feeling drained like you need to spend some time alone after that or maybe sleep like a baby after that, then you might be an Introvert first

I think that looking at your closest family can help determine your type, given that behaviour is clearly shaped by environment AND genetics. I mistyped as an introvert, as I am not very social and I prefer being alone and doing my own stuff; even as a child I was able to entertain myself and have always been extremely happy being alone with my inner life and process. However, when I did in depth analysis of behavioural patterns of my obviously introverted husband and myself, I found that the way I relate to people when around them, be that professionally or in close relationships, the ease with which I spring to action in any circumstance, the general lack of social awkwardness, or any type or socially infuced fear (public speach, leading meetings etc.) had me thinking. Then I realized that my mother, father and sister are all ENxx types, I researched about my extroverded "counterpart" personality and it all finally made sense: I am not very extroverted extroverted EN type 😅

I think I had a similar mistype happen. I always got introverted on test (didn't sounded quite right) and even most my younger life friends and family called me introverted or "anti-social" (though i now know anti-social is the wrong term now.) I have some social fears due to trauma from when I was a kid (which i read could make you look introverted.) I found a term called Ambivert that confused me but fit my ~kinda introverted kinda extroverted nature.~ I did some digging and realized that the problem wasn't that I was just a very emotional INTP or a very aggressive INFP but was actually an ENTP. An ENTP that shadows out into their INTJ when their angry. (not sure if i fully get shadow types yet, still learning but i think i got it. But who knows. Don't quote me on anything. I'm still looking for friends that really like MBTI to compare findings with. Might join the Love Who discord but I always kinda ghost servers.)
For the family side of things, I was mostly raised by my grandfather, a former Marian. I wasn't overly attached to most my family. However, I recently came to spend some family time with my Grandpa and Mother who live right next door of each other. My mom is going for her, i think Psychology Master or maybe she's started the PHD I forget. She studied different types of personalities and tests and said she felt they were all lacking something. She is an INTJ and said Grandpa would actually be an INFJ which confused me at first but as I said, he was a Marian, and they train you suppress or hide your emotions.
But looking at my family there are a lot of N types which are Ni (introverted intuition) so my Ne asking questions and coming up with all these new (but not asked for) ideas wasn't always supported. I mean even now I can see the energy drain out my mother's face when I talk for more than 10 minutes. How people thought I was this overly energetic introvert that talks a lot, will always amuse me.
