I used to be a C.O. several years ago. I was miserable working at that job. I had to write people up all the time. They watched us constantly to see if we were doing “our job”. It was awful. The food was horrible. Everything was horrible. I used to think inmates were actually nicer than my coworkers. A lot of them just wanted to get promoted and were always threatening people with a taser. I’m a Latina and there was another officer from the Middle East. We were always treated different. I remember myself telling the inmates “we are all in jail, with a different uniform”.

I just finished watching season seven... Literally 30 minutes ago and I'm still reeling, I have been out of prison for 12 years and I spent ten years in and out before that, the criminal justice system failed me and it took me a long time to get on my feet... They give you 200 dollars and a bus ticket and expect you to figure it out from there... I am so touched that there are people who are trying to help... It is important to know that even though some people have made dire mistakes in their lives that it doesn't make them a bad person... God bless the OiTNB writers, producers, and cast for bringing mine (and countless others) truth meaning.

Roshill K I can agree to that a bit. I feel men get the short end of the stick these days. Yes, there will be a new wave of “beta males” lol, but maybe that’s a good thing to a degree. What society has forever told us we have to be has had a negative impact on all of us to a degree. Men have been given a bad rap because of this, and it’s not fair. Not all men are what they’ve been portrayed, just as all other stereotypes aren’t true. We need to support one another instead of going backward, like much of society is doing today! Sending love to all of you.

@@SuperMelrose1 That's true and most of them feel really intimidated by females in the US now. Females are losing their femininity slowly as well. Single motherhood is causing young men to be ineffective leaders. Kids need both a Male n female figure in their life that is slowly going away and we are praising single motherhood. The stats do show why 70% of single mother kids end up in juvenile or in a bad way. Cause we are losing good quality men who can teach their young how to respect and discipline them and their mother. I hope we don't cross the line too much the other way. And thank you to both of you for your lovely comments

For me. It was the first real true representative of life for transgender people. Miss Laverne Cox is one of my idles because she is so real. Through her journey I realized that life would never be easy for me as a transgender man, but that it was possible to be who I was, she is such a strong woman, and to see Sophia, and her getting out saying that she was moving on, and never going to look back is a beautiful thing. Honestly I have never seen representation of the life of someone who is transgender be more true than this was.

Shows go so much further than just the TV screen. Another fandom I'm a part of is the Supernatural one, through which Misha Collins created an event called Gish. This year we raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to clear the fields in Laos of undetonated explosives from the Vietnam War. In the last 40+ years over 20,000 people have been killed or maimed by these bomb and nearly have of them were kids. Communities around these TV shows can do incredible things that change the world for the better when we all come together.

The Poussey Washington Fund is also such a wonderful thing to underline the show's legacy of narrative activism in exploring the corruption and inhumanity of our prison industrial system (and currently of its degrading hunt down of immigrants). Thank you to the show for helping me understand some of the realities of being incarcerated. I just finished season 7. My older brother has been incarcerated for 8 years now including 2 years in a detection center here in Australia awaiting deportation here and the detention centres here have a notorious reputation including the christmas island detention centre. The show reminded me how outside support is crucial for them to get through each day. I have at times been guilty of given up support for my brother and giving him the silent treatment because I questioned why he kept fighting his right to stay in the country and whether its was best for him just to return home. I had always blamed him for his problems rather than the problems that led him a life of crime. But after watching the show, I will now establish that contact. I know I wont make much of a difference in the outcome of his case but at least he knows someone outside here hasnt forgotten him. Thank OITNB. Bless you all out there

This is really a truly amazing show and should win so many awards. These ladies did an amazing job and there can not be enough great things to say about the writers.

A character from orange is the new black that really stood out for me was Nicky Nichols. Her character is always portrayed as kind and loyal, she thinks of others before herself but the part that I could relate to was the way that she was "wired" that she has a problem. I never had parents who neglected my needs but I understood the way she described herself as someone who can't be fixed. She met people who loved her and cared for her, and since she was incarcerated it wasn't as easy to access heroin and it helped her grow. Though she admits that she has this unquenchable thirst to self destruct, her relationships with the inmates helped her to ultimately decide to give up her heroin addiction. Her relationship with Reznikov was the most impacting one of the series that I've witnessed so far, Reznikov was more of a mother to her than her own biological one. If it wasn't for Reznikov I don't believe Nicky would have developed as much throughout the series. Their relationship really changed Nicky for the better, it shows that even though she believed she was hopeless she was still able to change and grow through the help of a mother's love. Orange is the new black really motivated me to change and improve myself so not that I will end up like them, but to take the opportunity I have to make better choices and decisions. This series touched real world controversial topics and executed their message to the entire world, it is a show that will forever stick with me.

I’m here years later after binge watching the show for the first time, and finishing the last ep. I both hate and love that I do this to myself (start a tv series after it stops) because I didn’t have to go through withdrawal with everyone else but now I have to do it alone 😩😭. This show gave me SO MUCH and is still so relevant today. God bless the cast, crew and everyone involved in the project!
