Since, from his point of view, learning about other countries, different cultures and all that stuff, that (for us) is pretty damn cool, doesn't give him the knowledge that allows him to make more money then, for him, geography is the most useless stuff anyone would want to know. I think the lack of exposure to other countries in the US causes confusion between the concepts of a state, a country, and a continent. Americans regularly "experience" states, so when they hear of someone coming from Asia, or something happening in Canada, they automatically think of these places as being on the same "level" as Wisconsin or Arkansas.

There’s tons of knowledge on the same level that I don’t know and I’m sure the same goes for you. And your go to is the 7 continents or even just continents in general? Literally so many people disagree on what defines a continent, how many there are, and what their names are. That’s a terrible example for basic knowledge lol. @@texasjoehotdog1838 I'm from Germany and we call this basic knowledge "Allgemeinwissen". It's considered to be something everybody needs to know to help you through life. It's not like you need to know it because someone will ask you about it. Like knowing to not immediately trust new people, how the government works, that you need money to live and work to get money, etc... Like the name suggests: basic knowledge.
      Another important aspect of it is what exactly the land under our feet and beyond the sky is and what types of places there are. This knowledge is expected of everyone to know to find their place in society and shape their view of the world. So that you don't end up living your entire life in a pond not realizing the vastness of the sea that the world is and missing out on life.
      But that's just my opinion on this, I won't force anyone to have basic knowledge, but I expect everyone to have it.

Knowing that Kazakhstan is one of the biggest countries? Not so much lol. Knowing how the government works to some extent would be useful too depending on your civic rights and duties but I feel like you might be overestimating how much your average person knows about their government even in Germany lol.
      Do you have every element on the periodic table memorized? Or even just those aside from synthetic elements. That’s the land under our feet and beyond the sky, the world around us. It’s cool to know but I definitely don’t expect everyone to know it. I’m curious too where you’d draw the line on what you expect people to know. The top 100 biggest countries? The top 100 most populous countries? Every country? Every country including breakaway states? No bs I’m legitimately curious.

      this is unfortunately true, i'm from the US and someone who genuinely loves learning, but ik the reason he's like that (even tho he's Canadian, it's still similar enough) and it's because our education systems here are so woefully garbage, that they've turning learning into a genuinely awful experience that can scar your desire for knowledge. Personally, i think it's on purpose too, there's some very corrupt people in power our countries, and i think sabotaging our education system is intentional because nobody can mess it up this bad "accidentally." lol. It's either intentional or everybody here doesn't care about the education system and is just so selfish that they only care about themselves and not the future generations of children.

      @@Joyboy0101 pretty easy to answer my man :], how about the fact that schools in the US turn learning into an unfun chore that makes school a slog to get through, or that they teach through about the most inefficient methods possible, how about the fact that the education system doesn't recieve enough funding so most schools have tiny budgets for updating supplies and such and what they do have usually gets spent on their sports programs because that's what's considered more important. Also, kids in these development years are in the most emotionally vulnerable and impressionable states of their whole lives, and just get put into a meat grinder system, where they are a number and not a person, because there's soo many kids, too many to care about each individually, on top of that bullying can easily happen because there's so many different groups at these schools and the culture within them is one of ignorance that degrades each other for differences and promotes vanity and shallowness instead of independent thought. There's no discipline taught to students so they have no method for diligence and there's no motivation either, why should a student actually care about what's being taught? No reason is provided so they just don't. On top of that, teachers are teaching either outdated curriculum or are teaching their own political agenda nowadays instead of the actually important, practical lessons like how to manage finances because higher-ups suspiciously don't want kids to learn that stuff and most teachers are aloof to most students feelings or problems and therefore don't care if they actually remember any of the things they're taught or not. And these are all just the problems I can think of offhand from my time in school. But that's the thing, when I got out of there, and on my own, I discovered I actually loved learning independently and that's when I gained knowledge through enjoyable, interesting methods on my own time, like by listening to industry experts and masters of their skill talk about cool aspects of their subjects on this very platform, through this, I found I loved things like geography, chemistry, biology, and nuclear science but i hated these subjects in school because you had to learn about them through timed and tested, unnatural methods that were often wrong or even inaccurate with some of the information, often learning through non experts, having to memorize all the unimportant info in a subject, never focusing on the most job relevant aspects of the subject nor having students apply what they've learned in real world situations where they'll need it. Also, everything is made for the lowest bidder and you're treated as such, aka they treat you like an idiot unless you opt to take advanced classes where they assign you 3x the workload... and don't even get me started on homework and how utterly pointless and mentally draining it is. Look, I think you get the point, bottom line is school is a whole lotta mindless work that makes you turn your brain off, but learning doesn't have to be like that, interactive, 1 on 1 learning, apprenticeship, and directly listening to and working with industry experts is where it's at, and that's how learning becomes enjoyable imo and school had none of that so a student going through such an ineffective system can get discouraged from learning for the rest of their lives from such bad experiences, aka scarred so that's why I said that.

    As an American (US) who knows world geography quite well, I sincerely hope that these videos cause my fellow Americans to learn geography! With the internet, we have the most amount of international communication than ever before, and the ability to learn things like never before! Quiz games are FREE.

    The guy who lives in Canada and thinks he is never going to leave it - you could tell him, what if there are better countries in the world for him to live, or what if life in Canada becomes shit, he would have to know where to go at least. Not talking about participating in politics of your society, to not be a vegetable who is just told whom to vote for, to actually learn about how the world functions, you definitely need to at least know which countries exists and their history.

    I really got confused when first heard in your videos that Asia and Europe are defined as different continents...
    I googled this info and was shocked that there are different perspectives in many countries on how to separate the land into continental parts... Before your videos, I was 100% sure there are 6 continents (I am from Russia): Africa, North America, South America, Australia, Antarctica, and Eurasia. Now I know more :)

    • @peterfireflylund
      @peterfireflylund 2 года назад +1

      And some people think of the Americas as a single continent (which makes sense)… and some people are taught that Oceania is a continent (lol). If we go by continental plates, then there are many, many more.
