That album is filled with instructions for the black and "white" tribes to U-N-I-T-E!! We must join and raise up against those ho trespass against us which is EVERYBODY ELSE!!
He’s an Orthodox Jew and I believe that informs his music to a significant extent and as you can see the way he dresses too. The beard, the hat, the black and white color scheme, the tallit strings that might be visible from time to time, etc. He references Moshiach which is the Hebrew word for Messiah.
@@jeyrock5559 He was Hasidic, but isn't any longer. He is still Jewish. If I weren't so tired I'd try to sum up the distinction between Orthodox and Hasidic lol. They're both traditionally observant of the same rules basically. There are definitely differences though. Different Hasidic groups follow different tzaddiks. You can think of them as special rabbis who are like living saints. There are cultural differences, some different traditions, and a different attitude towards how far you can assimilate into the dominant culture/society. But I'm just scratching the surface sorry. Hope it helps a little, and you can definitely get a lot more info just by googling. I should add, Hasidim have a much stronger basis in Jewish mysticism. That's a major component... I'm definitely sleep deprived lol.
I heard him say back when this song came out that he won’t even hug a female or share the stage with a woman, something like that, bc he’s married and it’s against his religion
He also keeps referencing Hashem, which literally translates to "The Name." Orthodox and Hassidic Jews feel that the word "God" should be reserved for special occasions, so if they want to talk about God in a casual context, they use Hashem instead out of respect. "Matisyahu" is the Yiddish pronunciation of "Matityahu," which is a Hebrew name that is typically changed to "Matthew" in English.
So Matisyahu at this time was deep in the Orthodox Jewish Community in 'Crown Heights' New York. So there is alot of Jewish theology in his lyrics. HaShem means 'The Name' and it is the Term for The Holy name of God. Y-H-V-H. He talks about 'rip a hole in the ceiling' is language about connecting Heaven and Earth, bringing God's Spirit and His ways to Earth. He says 'I want Mo-shi-ack now' means he wants the Messiah Now, which mean the Annointed one who is the Jewish Prophet who is prophesied to come and save the Jewish people and unite all Nations with God.
a big thing also, this show was free. most of the people most likely didn't hear him before, and witnessed his best live performance of one of his best songs. security guards had to TELL PEOPLE TO COME and the one and only promise the security guards made was great music.
I have never clicked so fast to a reaction until I saw MATISYAHU in your title. I have never seen anyone react to him before. Man, I remember when I saw him in Albany before he became famous. I am pleasantly shocked someone recommended him, as he has become very much only in the Jewish music scene now. "Beat Box" "One Day" "Jerusalem." "Chop Em Down" "Got No Water"
He's got a few real bangers very oriented to love and peace! Always hard to get the full lyrics in a fast rap, but you guys got most and the main messages for sure. Thanks for this reaction!
I've seen him live. He is legit. He whole-heartedly believes is a message of peace and love, and he admits to his shortcomings/failings. He no longer wears the clothes of an Orthodox Jew but his lyrics still carry a deeply spiritual message. His new a new album this year goes in a bit of a different direction--still incredible and fresh. Check out these songs from the last few years: "Step Out Into the Light", "Keep Coming Back for More", "Tugboat", and "Mama Please Don't Worry". Our world needs his voice more than ever!!
Yes! I've been thinking of requesting this, and this is the best version of this song! This whole live album is fantastic! "Stripping away the layers and reveal your soul, got to give yourself up and then you become whole" my favorite line. I've been lucky enough to see him live myself 😍
This song has brought me tears since I first heard it on MTV while I was ge4tting reasdy for school in the morning when i was 13. Im 30 now and it gives me the same feeling

It makes me so happy to see people enjoy the music my time grew up with. I met Matisyahu at a show in 06' and he is incredibly kind hearted, as he is talented. Glad you both enjoyed his mix. Shoutout to his his Guitarists and drummer, big ups.
Matis has hands down changed millions of lives including mine. So much inspiration from his music. I have been following him since 2006 when he sold out the Fox Theater in Atl. I’m very grateful for his passion and lyrics about God they continue to inspire. I’m glad y’all dig his vibe! Very nice review y’all did! I dig it!
I’m actually on the stage during this performance during other songs you can see me up there my name is in the credits of the dvd also correction I’m in live at stubbs vol 2

I Really respect his passion and devotion to his beliefs. Not to mention his vibe and ability. Used to rock with him quite a bit. Think you'd really enjoy "One Day". Always enjoy you two. Much love!!
Check out his video with bass player Brady Wyatt and Matisyahu song called “In My mind” most everyone can relate. Someone plz take this advice and check this song out it’ll be the best favor you’ve for yourself for the day!

And its universal in terms of just i guess every religion, nah just every walk of life. We are all humans, and his music for the most part can be heard by anyone.
He is singing about how we're too full of ourselves and he wants the messiah to come now. This is a recording from Stubbs in Austin Texas. It's one of the greatest rock performances in history. He crowdsurfs TWICE, and the hippies deposit him back onstage with his yarlmuke and all his clothing intact. So kind, so sweet. People who were there STILL talk about it
A song called “Warrior” Live at Stubbs by Matisyahu has an amazing guitar solo!!!! I’m happy to say I have been listening to his music for years and I still go back to Live at Stubbs. “Youth” is awesome too!!!
Brooklyn folks have Jamaican influenced music like KRS-ONE and the true origins of hip hop also with a lil hard core all were underground together as fam ! He has a great flo- meshiaak- is a Hebrew word for the Messiah so he keeps saying I want the Messiah now and that's our crown we pull down if we accept him in us !!! Their is a live version that's got a lil speech of what a king is priceless
The best live performance of any artists in the history of live performances. Basically, he's talking about his religion being a jew, and sharing the love, wisdom and positivity to non-jewish audiences.
The acoustic of this is very nice too. There's also a vid of him in a shop in Hawaii and a dude is singing his song One Day. He had a show later and invited dude on stage. Seems like a good guy.
It's about humility, stepping back in life and seeing what direction to go when faced with the negativity of others. That negativity can be the demons surrounding us trying to bring you down into depression, negative thinking, and faithlessness. The negativity from others that makes you want to give up. We have to remain humble and see that God exists in all things, even the negative moments and what direction you are going to go with what you perceive.
For some regae feels, check out the encore from this 2016 Marisyahu concert, after the several-minute-long cheer for an encore. Thanks for reacting to him, I've always really liked his stuff. I understand it has a limited appeal, but he wrote my all time favorite Chanukah song and it has a very funny music video that goes with it.
One Day is a banger. I bet you heard One Day at one time. You might have been in middle school when it was on the charts. Someone was playing in a coffee shop in Hawaii singing One Day. Breaks it down making it a duet. He has aged since then.
Thank you two so much for doing this video. I’ve seen Matisyahu live three times and he’s incredible. He has another great song called “Fire of Heaven/ Alter of Earth”.
I love Matisyahu because he’s super novel without being a novelty act. Not really religious and definitely not orthodox lol but like Asia I can appreciate the vibe for sure. He’s sincere. And you HAVE to check out him and Akon doing One Day-or better yet check out him doing it with PS 123 choir in NY or one they organized among hundreds of strangers both Israeli and Arab. Hugely moving.
