Make an armor piercing round by casting a hardened steel projectile into the lead projectile and then fire it into the AR500 plate.

sman7290 A lot of it blew off, you can see the fragments flying all over. There was a large chunk, you're right. Bet it lost half it's weight though.
Michael MacConn you know I don't think it did pause @2.29 you can clearly see the round the rear of it is pretty much intact and the front is muchroomed flat! Like they said it lost most of its energy hitting the plate, but I guess it could have still buried its self in the dirt.

Fire a mosin rifle out of the cannon, then have the mosin fire while it's mid flight.

I physics hard bro, I realize the sudden acceleration would shatter the stock. You would need a reduced power load, and likely a spring or some other cushioning to reduce the impulse from the shot. You would also likely need to cut the stock off completely behind the trigger to have any chance of fitting it in a cannon. Finally the triggering mechanism would need to have a string (likely a strong fishing line) tied to the trigger with 20 feet of slack and positioned carefully so as not to be cut by the rifle as it leaves the cannon, a tricky proposition. Assuming you can get the rifle to fit in the cannon, survive being fired, and have a string pull the trigger on it mid-flight, the speed of the round would be greater than if it were fired from a stationary rifle.
Shoot the same projectile at the AR500 armor but have something behind the armor besides air and see if it stops it then.
That was awesome. Just seeing artillery of any size is great. Just shoot anything and it will be a great show.

Throw the plate on a "dead" wild hog, and than do the test. Just to see what would happen to the flesh and organs of the "deceased" wild hog after the hit.

I wonder if with the canon round if its better to not have the plate maybe you get lucky and it just leaves a 4" hole in you and you get the biggest through and through anyone has experienced, lol

cutlerylover No. What's better is to not be in front of the cannon. Failing that, it's better to have the plate on a bodyguard between you and the cannon. Then you just get hit with a relatively low-velocity bodyguard.
What was that, 45,000 ft-lb? 450lb bodyguard ("Oook") at ...? 24 oz at 1405 fps is 46012 ft-lb according to Bill St Clair. By momentum, a 4800 oz i.e. 300 lb bodyguard would be doing 70.25 fps. Close to 48 mph, with 23005 ft-lb of impact energy.

I make that 7.025 fps for the bodyguard. 1.5lb / 300lb = 0.005; 1405 fps * 0.005 = 7.025 fps, not 70.25. That would probably knock you down, but it wouldn't kill you.

I think if the wood framing hadn't given way, it might have punctured. A lot of energy was absorbed elasticly by stretching the wood back before it broke.
This. Had to throw it in my favorites. Those level III plates are no fucking joke. Also, It seems like you had one of those shitty secondary wicks that you would find within a pack of firecrackers to set each one off individually. Thing went fast!

It's really cool that it actually stopped the projectile :) When you guys shot the cannon at the Spartan brand armor, it shattered into a whole bunch of pieces.
Could you cast a slug for the cannon in other metals? Like steel, tungsten, or aluminum and try firing those at the AR500 plate?

+Rcham It wont work at all, its a shurikens are star shaped and the cannon barrel is round. Even if you did manage to launch a shurken out of a cannon it will be inaccurate, like how is that thing suppose to spin

Whoa the south has rised again! Reminds me of Major Pelham at Fredericksburg with "Ole Nappy" and a couple of Parrotts on a grassy knoll. Wonder how a double cannister cans would do. Used something like this with my 7-1/2 birdshot to see the effective range for upland game.

I have never seen and would much appreciate seeing what happens when a round iron or stone cannonball is fired against a mocked up stone castle wall. Siege cannons brought about the end of the castle as a fortified retreat and this was the most important consideration in the history of the cannon. Thanks.

Load the cannon with salad forks mixed with #1 buck shot, throw some BPI #47 Shot Buffer in for good measure. shoot said load at a massive amount of clay targets.

Awesome vid!!!! Drill out the middle of it about half way through...... test the homemade hollow point on some ballistics gel, and other things...... Sodas, meat, etc. Hollow point cannon rounds.... Just a thought.

I would love to see the AR500 plates shot with different types of armor piercing ammo like 5.45x39 and 7.62x39 maybe some 5.56. Just to show how well it holds up! I'm not sure how available that ammo is in those calibers but it would be fun.
My pop worked at a quarry(head blaster.....yeah awesome job!!) As a side Job he would shoot out the kiln with the 8 gauge......what a lucky man, soooo lucky!! He said it was on a tripod and had a recoil spring. One man loading one man pullin the string!!!

Maybe put a sand bag behind the armor plate so it doesnt fly off. Or maybe some kind of a steel penetrator drilled and installed into the centre core of the projetile. Just and idea! Love the videos guys!!!!!!!!
