Eh idk about that. eReaders are still a thing, and Yotaphone was giving an all in one solution and it had actually useful applications like battery life was not great on smartphones at the time, so you could use the eink screen which consumes way less power.
I used to have a yotaphone2 and it was a great phone. The e-ink screen really made the difference with its widgets always visible, the possibility make the battery last for 5 days and the possibility to read books at any time without planning to bring a reader or an actual book or take selfies with the main camera, The main problem was the snapdragon 801 which was not fitting well inside there and burning when using it for demanding apps lowering the battery range a lot. I was charmed by the yotaphone 3 but even after years it was available only on chinese stores at quite high prices for old midrange hardware. The concept was great though, too bad nobody else developed something like that.
I remember it even had some ingenious tricks in its construction, like the volume rocker on the side was also the slot for a microSD. The idea of the two screens and the software integration is still great, it was truly innovative in a market that frankly has gotten stale for a while. All smartphones look the same nowadays, they all copy iPhone even the flaws, it's so boring.
Yeah I agree the concept is amazing like if someone can make a phone with the same concept with modern specifications and hardware I would definitely buy it and it would probably be one of the best phones on the market it's a shame this concept never came back I hope it does

I think the idea was fine, but it was the execution that failed. E-ink screens drain the battery much slower than lcd screens. Moving basic functionalities onto the e-ink screen in some smart way could prolong the battery life of the phone, which would be a good selling point. However without a reasonable price and the rest of the phone being decent, it won't sell.

I really like the idea actually. E-Ink displays barely need power, so it could be used most of the time to save power, and the primary screen could be used only for stuff like watching video.
It seems like you'd scratch or damage your back screen pretty quickly. I think if it had some cover system that could flip from one side to the other quickly, that might work

That is one of the big problems with the Russian economy: the President dictates what gets made and what doesn't. The free market, enterpreneurs big and small choosing freely their own line of work, are not that common there, nor allowed to grow. It is stupid and not how capitalism is supposed to work.
plus the Russian president doesn't understand anything about technology so I wouldn't be surprised if he actually thinks that those are working products and can compete with Western ones 🙄

In the rest of the world yes, rich people own big businesses, but half, or sometimes most, of the Western economies rely on small and medium sized businesses. 50% of the US economy depends on small businesses, for example. Other Western countries have similar percentages. That happens when a country is actually a free country and not a kleptocracy. Meaning, you don't need to mail baskets of champagne and caviar to the president or some bureaucrat to open and run a succesful business. Or be cousins with the mayor.

The idea is smart in spite of the poor implementation. Having a 2nd eink screen means you can use a phone for reading or listening to music while camping etc. with 30 hrs battery life (in theory)
Exactly, the second screen is a great idea for reading (less strain on eyes) and it extended the battery life beyond anything the top flagships of the time could do. My father owned Yota 2. Main problem was actually getting one! They did not make many.
I actually had a Yotaphone 2 back in 2015 until 2017. It was not bad considering that I was young and kind of dumb. The e-ink screen actually didn't do shit in terms of battery efficiency, and it was actually bad enough that the previous frame blended into the current one. On the topic of component quality and specs, it didn't take too long for the phone to show its true colours and shit itself in a year - the screen would turn into an impromptu rave and shut itself off at around 5% charge, but you could still hear incoming calls yet not interact with the phone. Also, fun fact: Yota also sold cases for the phone which were basically a soft plastic rim which never felt really trustworthy.
the only good think about it were battery life and lots of weird (and cool) shaped phones. Now every smartphone is virtually the same, does not matter the brand at all.
I have to admit, I liked the idea of the e-ink screen on the back. It was an innovation that I think other companies could have picked up and exploited. Instead, it basically seems forgotten.

The EU (and some other countries that you wouldn't guess are less corrupt!) is waaay better in that topic. A country like norway, germany or similar would have had a good chance. Another company like apple would make the phone even more expensive. Too bad actually.

@@РоманКуликов-з5п for luxury vehicles eh Russia does lack but what I like about Russian vehicles is their old school or dated to others design. In the US we may get 2 Russian vehicles soon updated for the US market under another name. The UAZ Patriot in suv and pickup options. They design is dated like from 2010 but what I REALLY like is the solid front and rear axle, locking transfer case, a 2.7 inline 4. For off road this vehicle seems like a dream to have. I personally would prefer the pickup version. Russia has the capability to develop some amazing vehicles too, Marussia B1 and B2 I personally think look good. But basically what I liked about some Russian vehicles is their basic no nonsense design which is what's lacking in the US. Jeeps are hardly jeeps anymore and the Cherokee is nothing like it used to be. And wranglers for more than some Benz. Personally would like to have a simple car that has more function than features. Oh the UAZ will come under the name Bremach.
The e-ink was also important in extending battery life too. In the article I read back when, they mentioned it was intended for the Russian on a long trip with little access to power or something.

The books are fucking amazing and is a 6book series and have multiple trilogy book spin-offs. I’d definitely recommend reading. So many good moments, I can’t wait to re read these books multiple times over. Her writing is exceptional at the very least.
I remember this being advertised back then! Coming from a Linux community sphere, it was mostly billed as a way to allow interaction while saving battery life (e-ink doesn't require backlight nor much power to change the screen), mainly for things like notifications and static controls for certain applications. I also recall this phone being more AOSP-based, which is a plus for those wanting to de-google-fy their phones (my first smartphone was an HP Pre 3 which was really awesome to be honest). Edit: I don't mean this as a defense of the phone :) just recalling how it seemed at the time. Of course it was probably destined to fail, not being up-to-date on Android releases and being so custom...
I wanted the YotaPhone2 so bad when it was announced, the second screen for reading some ebooks on sounded cool. Glad I didn't go down that road though!

I actually had a Yotaphone 2 and I liked it. I appreciated the e-ink screen especially on sunny days or while commuting. Then one day the phone fell and the main screen broke, but I still managed to use the phone through the e-ink screen alone for a couple months. The biggest problem was the already outdated Android version and no available upgrades.

@ Nokia phones were actually good and competed with major phone companies really well. And is still making ok phones (Lumia, well.. atleast better than Yotaphone). Funny how Finland, a little 5 million people country, Russian neighbor, makes better phones than Russia.
I remember being kind of interested in the Yotaphone. The eInk screen seemed cool back then. But I waited for the price drop, as all Android phones tended to do after 6 months or so. But it never did. It remained at $700 long after it was obsolete, so I never bought one.
I wanted to buy a Yotaphone 2. I liked the idea, to have like a city area plan or a train- or concert ticket displayed on the back of the phone without using power. Or being able to read something in bright sunlight. It ended up being too expensive for me at the time and also getting some mixed reviews that weren't so satisfactory.. But I still appreciate the idea behind it.

I like the less bright color of the back screen of yota. It is not turning blueish, it is not doubling with weird lines, and it seems like it doesnt hurt my eyes everytime it is shown in the camera.

I actually have a Yota Phone 2 and used that for two years. It was great and I like the two-screen feature. But unfortunately, I couldn't upgrade its Android version and its processor couldn't keep up with 2018 anymore so it constantly heated up which is my I didn't buy the Yota Phone 3.

I like the concept of reading on the phone, but it would probably do better if it could download audiobooks, as those are popular with more people. They could listen to it on their device. The iphone can do that. I think I've listened to a podcast and an audiobook. The goal would be to make it better by changing reading time, making the text read fast or slowly, listen to a male or female narrator. Offer different voices. That kind of stuff. I've always wanted books to be more interactive and offer breaks with relevant music or a quick game. I might be a weirdo and have horrible ideas. Tech isn't my thing, just rambling.

had one and loved it, it was really cool during the meetings when it was showing when the meeting is over when placed main screen down (via calendar app). Also photo taking was fun with retro camera picture. used e-ink display every time when in the sun. it worked very reliably, but then I went on a 2 weeks long road trip with google maps always on and a problem appeared - the phone overheated. Not a problem for a casual use, but killer when always on. fixing it to a vent helped somewhat, but these overheats, I think, caused the e-ink connector to deglue and one by one line of the screen died. It was still usable, but ugly with black lines going through the screen. And then I dropped it and broke both screens at once. Would buy another, modern one.
Agreed! The Amazon Kindle paperwhites are a lifesaver for reading stuff outside in broad daylight. That would be great to have as an option on a phone as well.
Never heard of the Yota phone until now. The dual screens is ingenius and is something that I would use to the fullest. Perhaps this concept will brought in a new product by one of the bigger companies.
I legitimately would like a phone like that if I could switch off the LCD screen and then use the e-ink to save battery, as I am often traveling and would like to read, not carry two devices, and not need a battery pack necessarily if I want to entertain myself for many hours in environments I don't have internet. Seems the price would never be competitive if they made the normal smart phone part at parity with other models of a similar price.
This happens all the time, countries try to copy the IT success of western countries and try to present it on domestic market. Which I support as is it the basic of free market, which also must be competitive and not being ruled with 99% by a single company ( looking at you Apple, Samsung, McDonald, Disney etc... ). Here we have same thing in "Tesla" which sells phones as well as TV's, not that good but it is domestic company so buying that helps your own economy. Similar thing that actually succeed is Chinese Huawei which, despite being censored in US now, is still profitable because China and Asian market is as big as US one now. But I do agree that it needs to have some sort of quality as well and cheaper in order to break trough, not an easy thing to do when your rich competition buys all the good IT techs and development is not cheap. All in all, despite how bad it is, each country should attempt to make it's own brand. Never allow single company to rule the market. Even in Capitalism that is bad for business and economic growth.

I was soo excited when I got my Yotaphone. The e ink screen side shattered in the first week, lol. They didn't really test that thing, it needed a plastic lip around the second screen.
I don't think that's true, in things like aviation, rocketry and weapons systems, they had some incredible stuff. It's just that consumer technology was not invested into.

the problem with places like Russia is the very people that come up with creative ideas are often divergent thinkers and generally dont conform to normal ways of thinking and people like Putin despise this. It destroys the sort of people that are likley to develop original ideas, they get ostrasized or labled as mentally unstable. Being constantly discriminated against will eventally make you mentally unstable.

Private imported a Yota2 from Russia, it is to date the best phone I ever owned. It was perfect for me.

I really like the idea actually. E-Ink displays barely need power, so it could be used most of the time to save power, and the primary screen could be used only for stuff like watching video.

Yeah they don't and the government doesn't really care about it but Russia has some private companies that belong to the government and the government has shares in certain countries that isn't the case in the US or any other western nation
That is one of the big problems with the Russian economy: the President dictates what gets made and what doesn't. The free market, enterpreneurs big and small choosing freely their own line of work, are not that common there, nor allowed to grow. It is stupid and not how capitalism is supposed to work.

The idea is smart in spite of the poor implementation. Having a 2nd eink screen means you can use a phone for reading or listening to music while camping etc. with 30 hrs battery life (in theory)
Exactly, the second screen is a great idea for reading (less strain on eyes) and it extended the battery life beyond anything the top flagships of the time could do. My father owned Yota 2. Main problem was actually getting one! They did not make many.

I actually had a Yotaphone 2 back in 2015 until 2017. It was not bad considering that I was young and kind of dumb. The e-ink screen actually didn't do shit in terms of battery efficiency, and it was actually bad enough that the previous frame blended into the current one. On the topic of component quality and specs, it didn't take too long for the phone to show its true colours and shit itself in a year - the screen would turn into an impromptu rave and shut itself off at around 5% charge, but you could still hear incoming calls yet not interact with the phone.
Also, fun fact: Yota also sold cases for the phone which were basically a soft plastic rim which never felt really trustworthy.

The EU (and some other countries that you wouldn't guess are less corrupt!) is waaay better in that topic. A country like norway, germany or similar would have had a good chance. Another company like apple would make the phone even more expensive. Too bad actually.

In the US we may get 2 Russian vehicles soon updated for the US market under another name.
The UAZ Patriot in suv and pickup options.
They design is dated like from 2010 but what I REALLY like is the solid front and rear axle, locking transfer case, a 2.7 inline 4.
For off road this vehicle seems like a dream to have.
I personally would prefer the pickup version.
Russia has the capability to develop some amazing vehicles too, Marussia B1 and B2 I personally think look good.
But basically what I liked about some Russian vehicles is their basic no nonsense design which is what's lacking in the US. Jeeps are hardly jeeps anymore and the Cherokee is nothing like it used to be.

@@GraveMemories I prefer to read fiction and more specifically fantasy. I am currently reading the “the mortal instruments” series by Cassandra Claire. The books are fucking amazing and is a 6book series and have multiple trilogy book spin-offs. I’d definitely recommend reading. So many good moments, I can’t wait to re read these books multiple times over. Her writing is exceptional at the very least.
I remember this being advertised back then! Coming from a Linux community sphere, it was mostly billed as a way to allow interaction while saving battery life (e-ink doesn't require backlight nor much power to change the screen), mainly for things like notifications and static controls for certain applications. I also recall this phone being more AOSP-based, which is a plus for those wanting to de-google-fy their phones (my first smartphone was an HP Pre 3 which was really awesome to be honest).
Edit: I don't mean this as a defense of the phone :) just recalling how it seemed at the time. Of course it was probably destined to fail, not being up-to-date on Android releases and being so custom...

I actually had a Yotaphone 2 and I liked it. I appreciated the e-ink screen especially on sunny days or while commuting. Then one day the phone fell and the main screen broke, but I still managed to use the phone through the e-ink screen alone for a couple months. The biggest problem was the already outdated Android version and no available upgrades.

@ Nokia phones were actually good and competed with major phone companies really well. And is still making ok phones (Lumia, well.. atleast better than Yotaphone). Funny how Finland, a little 5 million people country, Russian neighbor, makes better phones than Russia.
I think that the e-ink screen on the back was a pretty good idea. It's easier on the eyes when reading text and it doesn't drain any power... Why not?
It was very cool. Even today some reviewers remember it as a very inovative design. Want to read a book or even a website? just flip your phone.
Still using the Yotaphone 3 for all my books. Sadly, Android version is so outdated that some apps crash or won't even run on it :(

I remember being kind of interested in the Yotaphone. The eInk screen seemed cool back then.
But I waited for the price drop, as all Android phones tended to do after 6 months or so.
But it never did. It remained at $700 long after it was obsolete, so I never bought one.
Very much enjoyed this documentary style video. Just the right amount of detail. Would welcome more like this.

I liked the idea, to have like a city area plan or a train- or concert ticket displayed on the back of the phone without using power. Or being able to read something in bright sunlight.

I like the less bright color of the back screen of yota. It is not turning blueish, it is not doubling with weird lines, and it seems like it doesnt hurt my eyes everytime it is shown in the camera.

I actually have a Yota Phone 2 and used that for two years. It was great and I like the two-screen feature. But unfortunately, I couldn't upgrade its Android version and its processor couldn't keep up with 2018 anymore so it constantly heated up which is my I didn't buy the Yota Phone 3.
I once wanted one, because there was a small test of it from an online magazine that made it look interesting. But they weren't really available here, at least I found none.

I like the concept of reading on the phone, but it would probably do better if it could download audiobooks, as those are popular with more people. They could listen to it on their device. The iphone can do that. I think I've listened to a podcast and an audiobook. The goal would be to make it better by changing reading time, making the text read fast or slowly, listen to a male or female narrator. Offer different voices. That kind of stuff. I've always wanted books to be more interactive and offer breaks with relevant music or a quick game. I might be a weirdo and have horrible ideas. Tech isn't my thing, just rambling.

had one and loved it, it was really cool during the meetings when it was showing when the meeting is over when placed main screen down (via calendar app). Also photo taking was fun with retro camera picture. used e-ink display every time when in the sun. it worked very reliably, but then I went on a 2 weeks long road trip with google maps always on and a problem appeared - the phone overheated. Not a problem for a casual use, but killer when always on. fixing it to a vent helped somewhat, but these overheats, I think, caused the e-ink connector to deglue and one by one line of the screen died. It was still usable, but ugly with black lines going through the screen. And then I dropped it and broke both screens at once. Would buy another, modern one.
I was actually pretty interested in this, really good idea to have an e-ink screen as well, no idea why no one has done it since then.

I legitimately would like a phone like that if I could switch off the LCD screen and then use the e-ink to save battery, as I am often traveling and would like to read, not carry two devices, and not need a battery pack necessarily if I want to entertain myself for many hours in environments I don't have internet. Seems the price would never be competitive if they made the normal smart phone part at parity with other models of a similar price.

This happens all the time, countries try to copy the IT success of western countries and try to present it on domestic market.
Which I support as is it the basic of free market, which also must be competitive and not being ruled with 99% by a single company ( looking at you Apple, Samsung, McDonald, Disney etc... ).
Here we have same thing in "Tesla" which sells phones as well as TV's, not that good but it is domestic company so buying that helps your own economy.
Similar thing that actually succeed is Chinese Huawei which, despite being censored in US now, is still profitable because China and Asian market is as big as US one now.
But I do agree that it needs to have some sort of quality as well and cheaper in order to break trough, not an easy thing to do when your rich competition buys all the good IT techs and development is not cheap.
All in all, despite how bad it is, each country should attempt to make it's own brand. Never allow single company to rule the market. Even in Capitalism that is bad for business and economic growth.

the problem with places like Russia is the very people that come up with creative ideas are often divergent thinkers and generally dont conform to normal ways of thinking and people like Putin despise this. It destroys the sort of people that are likley to develop original ideas, they get ostrasized or labled as mentally unstable. Being constantly discriminated against will eventally make you mentally unstable.
