  • Thank you for watching this channel. This is just a quick blog on why Donkey Kong matters so much to me, why I love the character, what he's meant for my personal life, why I'm so excited whenever I see him. I know it's not a flashy vid or anything, but it's one I'm happy to say and put out, and I hope that you have a wonderful holiday season and have characters or games or stories that you hold that kind of value in. Would love to hear it if you have the chance. Happy Holidays, we'll see you with more monkey business tomorrow.

"I think we all have those little comfort characters. Our favourites. The ones that we carry on with us. They can be as silly as Donkey Kong is or they can be as deep and meaningful as... doesn't matter. Anything is deep and meaningful as long as it has personal value to you."
That is so true. I can attest to that, and for me, it's a choleric duck in a sailor suit.

I'll fully admit, if it wasn't DK or Kirby for me, it'd probably be Scrooge McDuck. His nephew's a pretty fantastic choice.

First time i ever played DKC, it was at my uncles house during the holidays.
    He’s not with us anymore.
Used to love seeing him, getting to see my uncle was something i always looked forward to.
We played DKC with our cousins, and we liked it so much, that before we went home, he went out with my mom and got us a copy to take home.
He was such a great guy.
He loved all us kids in the family, and he made Christmas something special whenever he was there.

Man, I found your channel out this month, and ever since I’ve been subscribed and have been watching your videos as soon as you post them.
You know, I’m from Brazil. We don’t speak the same language, we don’t eat the same food, we don’t listen to (most) of the same music, we don’t live in the same culture.
And still, I felt so connected with many of the feelings and emotions you told in the video.
It’s really incredible how DKC can connect two people with such a different background.
Thanks for the content. It helps me through hards times, as much as video games helped you with yours.

These games really can have such a big impact on our lives. They help us through some of the hardest points in our lives and can build us into who we are as we grow older. There are so many games like this and they don’t have to be philosophical masterpieces to do it. The story about your teenage years and your dad is pretty heartbreaking and I’m sorry you had to go through that. But its uplifting to hear how much things like donkey Kong country helped. Obviously I didn’t have the exact same experience but my parents divorced at a similar time in my life and the Yakuza series is literally what carried me through then. These are all just games, but they can end up becoming the crutches we desperately need when things get really hard. Anyways thanks for sharing your stories with the DK series, I really enjoyed watching the videos from this month!

Hearing you talk about Donkey Kong reminds me of how much Ocarina of Time means to me. Growing up from 1999, my older brother's N64 was always there for me and the sheer immersive terror that came from me playing Ocarina of Time just because pressing Z now made a horrifying sound within dungeons. And I would watch my brother play, as I would too on my own file but too scared of being the vulnerable young Link instead meandering and making no major progress on his file whenever I wanted to. I can't remember if I ever beat the game on my own back then but as I grew older and actually cared about finishing games I went back to it at around maybe 10 years old? I did it all on my own, got to Ganon and all. Half a dozen years later and I wanted to do it again, but comb across the entire game to 100% completion.
And every time I booted up Ocarina of Time, that title theme would play, Epona's hooves would clop, and I'd see the moon slowly set. That song and that scene means the world to me, because it only fits oh so perfectly with my final moment in my first total completion of that game, noting how much the dialogue really pushes the difference between being a child and an adult yet your hearts stay the same, your skill transfers no matter the timeline, and it really just clicked with me... And so for closure, I ditch the shield and switch swords so I can ride around the now peaceful field before entering Lon Lon Ranch at the perfect moment where the setting sun peaks over the western fence and Malon sings as she does at night. Makes for a nice segue back into the title screen where the moon's up in the peaceful night.
These memories help me remember how I felt during that playthrough, that no matter how others see you or judge you that you can always be capable and help others with a little bit of courage.

Donkey Kong Country released when I was 6 years old. I was old enough to have played Super Mario Bros, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Kirby's Adventure, but Donkey Kong Country hit different.
The game was incredible of course, but I also remember thoroughly reading the instruction manual and felt so enchanted by his world and his supporting cast of characters.
Donkey Kong Country Returns released the same month I returned home from my full time 2 year Church mission and it felt like such a blessing to see the Donkey Kong Country series come back.

This is a perfect example of what art can do for people. Things can look so simple on the surface, but what these things mean to people is infinitely more than the sum of their parts. For me it was Pokémon, which to many can just look like a childish cartoon or game series. But it let me connect with so many people and build friendships that changed my life. It bridged me into more Nintendo games like Mario, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Smash, etc which bridged me into more and more different media, which all changed my life in uncountable ways. I'll always love Pikachu for that, and all my friends have their own characters and franchises they feel similarly about. We really relate and understand in each other in that aspect, and that's just the magic that these things bring into our lives.

Your video here and the story you laid out really resonated with me and I saw a lot of parallels to my own life. My parents got me the DKC SNES bundle for my 4th birthday along with Mario’s Time Machine which I put in first. Since I couldn’t read it took me maybe 5 minutes before I put Donkey Kong in and was immediately absorbed into his world. It’s easy to look back and say “Oh yeah DKC had good graphics for its day” but actually being there to see it was mind blowing as a kid, felt like I was controlling a movie. Even my parents thought it looked amazing. I remember loving that you could swing on vines because I grew up kind of in the country and loved when my Dad would take me out to swing on the grapevines. And he loved the water level because he used to scuba dive, sometimes we’d just leave it on pause while the music played. It really brought my family brought my family together. I was 6 when I finally beat K Rool, I remember stomping my feet and screaming for my sister to come up stairs that I had just beaten the game finally. Well the developers trick worked exactly as intended, I completely bought the fake out credits just in time for my sister to come upstairs and laugh at me getting killed by K Rool lol. I love 2 and 3 but the first game just has so many precious memories tied to it, really the only more impactful game for me would be Super Mario RPG since it gave me the motivation to truly learn to read in Kindergarten. A couple years later I got the DK Jungle Green N64 bundle for Christmas, was incredibly hype and totally enjoyed DK64, I remember drawing stuff from it all the time and mentally assigning my friends the roles of the different Kongs haha. That was like 5th grade, and I definitely remember some of my friends starting to outgrow Nintendo but I still loved it, and my best friend did too. I remember some light teasing but I never felt like anyone was really trying to hurt my feelings about still loving Mario and Donkey Kong. Heck I even remember when I was in 9th grade there was like a resurgence of DK love with Donkey Konga. I swear every party I went to in 2004-5 people were playing Donkey Konga. I even remember people bringing their bongos and playing it 4 player. Sucks that it wasn’t popular in your region bro. My mom actually got me a set of the bongos for my birthday a few weeks ago and I’m finally going to play Jungle Beat, I’m super excited. I want to say as well, to a degree I resonate with your father situation. My Dad also abused prescription medication, but he was never physically abusive. Hell he was a great guy, I miss him so much. The problem was he would share his drugs with me starting around age 13, alleging I had an undiagnosed anxiety disorder. I can’t blame him for choices I made down the road, but I definitely think that was the beginning of my struggle with addiction. And you know, video games have helped with that too. Having something to occupy your mind can do wonders to stave off compulsive thoughts. I kind of stopped caring about games for the years where I was exhibiting a lot of unhealthy behavior so I missed out on Returns and Tropical Freeze, but since meeting my girlfriend 5 years ago I’ve cleaned up my act and have been revisiting a lot of the games I loved as a child and it’s been bringing me so much joy. I even found my original DKC cart in my grandma’s basement last year, I play it and remember the good days with my Dad as a little boy. Firing up the N64 to play Diddy Kong racing with my buddy. Watching my gf smash the bongos to Louie Louie 10 times in a row. Yeah, Donkey Kong’s still here with me. An old friend of who’s always been there, yeah I’m a sentimental guy but I really get where you’re coming from when you say how much this character means to you. He means a whole lot to me too. He represents Home

Merry Christmas and thanks for the gift of how much DK means to you.
If I may, I wanna share my DKC experience and how I loved this funny monkey franchise and why it’s stuck to me all these years.
So I was born in 2000, I wasn’t an OG Rareware kid, I only really knew DK from the rare glimpses I had of the OG arcade game, I didn’t even have a console until the Wii, but I had a GBA, my mom usually got me used GBA games for me, but not many of them clicked for me, (I had Mario advance 4 and never really got past world 2) but one day I was taking a ride to the airport she got me a game called “Donkey Kong Country” mostly because she grew up with the arcade game, I played the game on my GBA and something about it clicked, the goofy sound effects, the charming characters and the music on the crusty GBA soundboard, I eventually got 2 and 3, and later on I got Jungle beat for the Wii, and when I unlocked him in Mario Kart Wii Diddy was main for my childhood self, I was hyped for returns and while I’ve grown and played so much with other franchises, I can only think aside from Rayman being the video game series that’s shaped me into the weirdo I am today, I love this series and I hope for a great future for it soon.

Finally gave this a watch, and that talk about how characters can truly impact our lives spoke to me on a personal level. Kirby and Klonoa are pretty much to me what Donkey Kong is to you; in some form or another, they have impacted my life for the better, and I'm truly thankful for it. I always love hearing about how certain pieces of media, be it video games or movies or cartoons or anime or what have you, can truly shape people into who they are today, and I'm proud to be one of those people. As an autistic person, life can sometimes be difficult for me, but through the trials and tribulations, I'm always able to come out okay, and I owe part of that to the worlds and characters I have always loved and will continue to love even when I become dust.
Soooo... yeah, thanks for making this. And I'm deeply sorry you had to go through such a traumatic event in 2010; it's a good thing the announcement and subsequent release of Donkey Kong Country Returns proved to be a big help in such a difficult time for you.

What I can say about the announcement of DKCR seeming to lessen the impact of your father's abuse, well, that kind of thing is exactly what we need at times; an escape and distraction from the crap we're going through, time to relax and de-stress. Sometimes, we have to force ourselves to. Constantly worrying about what we're going through and constantly stressing about it is really bad for our physical and mental health. We need to take time for ourselves. So I say, don't feel bad about talking about DKCR's appearance and the sudden moment of happiness, levity, and hope in the midst of a tragedy. Just as you said, you needed that, and you really did, with how much stress your father put you and your family through.

Donkey Kong kind of stood out but your videos had a mix of Mario and Friends so I wasn't really sure until after your video on Diddy a few months ago and then around the second week of DKD, I thought, "Maybe he really likes DK" so it was wonderful to hear about your love for the series and growing up with the APE and how he helped you get through the hard times and even learn to read. That's pretty cool. Thank you for sharing. I first played Donkey Kong 64, that was my real introduction to Donkey Kong. I didn't have a SNES, I had a Sega Genesis/Mega Drive growing up so for me, it was a lot of Sonic but also Monster Boy. I remember getting the Gameboy Advance rereleases of the DKC games in highschool, I ran out to Best Buy and got Donkey Kong Country 2 for Gameboy Advance the week it came out after my next pay day from my first job in highschool. I liked it but, I don't know. I then played the original on GBA and it was ok. I preordered Donkey Kong Jungle Beat and got the big box with the bongos but my parents banned me from playing the game because it was too loud. Then I played Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie's Double Trouble on GBA in college and that's where I started to fall in love. After I graduated college, Donkey Kong Country Returns came out for the Wii. I rediscovered the Donkey Kong Country series about 2 years ago when I got my first SNES, the SNES Classic. Now I want to go back and replay the games I grew up with, retry Diddy Kong Racing (that game was waaay to hard when I was younger) and even try Mario and Rabbids for the first time. Anyways, I look forward to the rest of the month and your videos in the future. Happy Holidays and for a bright 2023

Thanks for sharing this story with us. It's so beautiful and sincare. Thanks as well for doing this Donkey Kong Decemeber thing. I never played the country games much, so I had no idea the series had so many in depth mechanics and themes. Would love to see more.

That was a beautiful video. It spoke to me in so many ways. I would even like to share that I also have my own character that has been through with me my whole life. A bit of an obvious pick, but you don't pick these to begin with. He is Mario. I've been playing that game since before I even had memory, or so I was told by by family and by home videos they took of me playing while I was barely a baby. I also had a bad experience at one point in my life. While maybe not as threatening as yours, it still was strong enough to set a many years-long depression on me. Guess what was announced then? Super Mario Galaxy 2. That game gave me hope that humanity could still make beautiful art. It seriously gave me hope to keep on trying and living. It is still my favorite game of all time, but that hope I gathered also makes me believe humanity could create better some day, so I won't set it as the best game of all time in stone. Heck, Odyssey came very, VERY close. The Persona series also helped me a lot too. Not only with the social links that help me understand the world just a bit more, but also by mentioning Carl Jung's Persona theory which was in great part one of the things that help me finally beat that depression. Today I live a happier life, but I still have Mario around me.
And even though DK has his own games and series, all excellent of course, I do consider him part of Mario's crew. Even though technically Mario was part of DK's games first, but nowadays the plumber takes top billing. So of course I have a soft spot for the monkey too, as well as for the whole Mario crew. I always choose him as the CPU in Mario Party. DK never fails to get 1st or 2nd place, always avoiding 3rd or 4th after hundreds of parties. And, to be honest, I do kind-of prefer the DKC games over "most" of Mario's 2D games, mainly Tropical Freeze and DKC 2.
P.S. I also loved Donkey Konga.

I have a weird request, but can we get a video like this exclusively from Goom? I feel like people tend to forget about him and he deserves to get a spotlight video in a similar vein as this "this is where I'm coming from" vlog.

It was a great DK December!
DK I came into late as a teenager, but despite that DK quickly became one of my favorite Nintendo franchises.
The musics great, I love most of the games and I've been able replay them over and over

I may have not played this game on the SNES, but I have played it on the Gameboy Advance. And the mine cart levels are the ones I have fun the most (but have died many, many, MANY times throughout trying to beat it maybe a couple of times or so). It was a game I only played if we ever went out to visit family, or to go on vacation and such. Sometimes I didn't even play the gameboy on the trip and would play with the Wendy's Kids Toys or the Happy Meal Toys on the food trays and to make sure I didn't loose it on the airplane or drop it underneath the seat. So there's that of what you will. But for me, it's hard to pick out which Nintendo character fits my role the most, but I would have to go with Boo. When I first saw from Mario Party 5 that he was a playable character, I knew I had to play him. Seeing him have his own map from Mario Party 4 was definitely a hard one to beat, but Mario Party 5 gave me the option to have him right out of the gate. And I have played that character on the gamecube many, many times in the past (More than Mario & Luigi combined, even played Koopa Kid character at one point a couple of times).
As for books, Robert Munch and Richard Scary comes to my mind as Scary's World and Robert's Fun wacky but very thoughtful interesting stories, combined that with Baby Songs back in the day, and that's how I got into more of the cute but slice of life stories with a mix of music in me. So I can say for certain that I've listened to music since 1998 when I was only 2/3 years old. And to this very day, even after 25 years since 1998 I'm still listening to music to this very day.

I didn't grow up with the DKC games. the 1st DK game I owned was actually Tropical Freeze on Wii U. Your video's this month have had me go back and play the Original DKC Games and put every DK Game post DKC on my play list. I've been having a Barrel Blast with all of them (except Barrel Blast lol). So yeah. Thankyou Pyrrhick. Your heart is shining through in these vids and honestly, they've been inspiring.

This Christmas morning I have been replaying DK64 on my Steam Deck. I just freed chunky and am exploring through frantic factory.
(Born 2000) I loved my strategy guide for it as a kid, no matter where I was I would constantly read it. It got so worn that my grandma had to sew the pages together. A few years later my parents bought me a new one, I still have both copies.
As I’ve been replaying it I still have as much fun as I did as a kid and when I relayed it about 5 years ago. It’s probably because I have almost all the locations of every collectible still memorized that I enjoy this game far more than others do, I love clearing each level one Kong at a time and taking my time making sure I got everything before I switch to a new Kong.
The voices of each Kong, their abilities, their personalities, the art style of the game, the comedy, the levels, the bosses even just collecting each colored banana with the sounds they make and how they look, I love absolutely everything in DK64 (except for some bonus stages).
Mario 64 may be the first game I’ve ever played and made me appreciate fluid movement systems in ANY game, from both titanfall & Team fortress 2 to Mario odyssey and a hat in time. but DK64 is still my favorite 3D platformer of all time and it’s not just nostalgia because I still genuinely enjoy playing it even 18 years later.

Wonderful vid. During the first few minutes I thought to myself "This is a lot like my childhood with Sonic games." A Genesis with Sonic 2 was my first console/game I had. My mom wasn't much into gaming, but she'd do her best to be a good player 2. One of my earliest memories is us staying up past my bedtime playing Sonic and making it to Metropolis Zone for the first time.

It really says something about Nintendo games, they tuly are a league of their own, regardless of how the company itself may behave these days.
