Half Life 2 was simply on another level in 2004, I mean just look at how much better it looks than the rest of the games on this list that came out the same year. Way ahead of its time.
One of the rare REAL masterpieces that EVER was released. All crafted to perfection, from story telling, gameplay, immersive world, characters, new gameplay ( gravity gun), technically impressive and hi end at the time. Just from physics, they even crafted riddles to solve with physics behavior or envirement. Heck, in games like HL2 you could interact with every object in the world (coffee cups for ex) i always was surprised, when fps games came like 5+ years after HL2 and had less physics to play and static objects ( like a chair u cant move or destroy) Shows once again how a masterpiece HL2 is still after almost 20 years its still a blast to play. Not many games stood the test of time. It will be for us modern gamers what SMB and alikes was on the NES. It impresses me still today
A few of my favorite games from 2004 are GTA: San Andreas, MGS3, and even MGS: The Twin Snakes which was also released in 2004 for Nintendo GameCube as a remake of MGS1 originally released for PS1 in 1998.
2004 was a great gaming year. It gave me my favorite single player FPS (Half-Life 2) and my favorite multiplayer FPS (Unreal Tournament 2004...okay, that one is single player as well). Furthermore, it also gave GTA: San Andreas, and some great games that weren't listed here: Sims 2 (which surprises me), Counter-Strike Source, Rome: Total War and Battlefield: Vietnam.
@TumTuned The combat was sick too because no other game had as good of ragdolls. I do wish there was more of doom 3 as I loved that engine too at the time but the ragdolls were all fucked.
Another great year! & of course some honorable mentions: Blood Will Tell: Tezuka Osamu's Dororo BloodRayne 2 Crash Twinsenity Def Jam Fight for New York Doom 3 Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3 Far Cry Godzilla: Save the Earth Gran Turismo 4 Jak 3 Katamari Damacy Killzone Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Metroid Prime 2: Echoes Mortal Kombat: Deception Need for Speed Underground 2 Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal (aka Ratchet & Clank 3) Samurai Warriors Second Sight Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Silent Hill 4: The Room Sly 2: Band of Thieves Spider-Man 2 (home consoles only) Star Wars: Battlefront Star Wars: KOTOR II The Sith Lords Syberia II The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay The Sims 2 The Suffering Tony Hawk's Underground 2
I`add to the list: 007 Everything or Nothing Fable LOTR the third age Paper Mario: the thousand year door Pikmin 2 Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines The list could go on, indeed the absolute peak of the gaming industry.
Oh I forgot about Doom 3. How did Doom 3 not make the list? That game had revolutionary lighting and shadows for it's time. Again I blame the critics and not Triple Jump.
UT2K4 is the reason I went to art school. I was at the time a very talented level designer. I even submitted resumes to Epic and Raven before I left high school. I worked on a few mods. Most notably Fraghouse Invasion. With that mod not only did I design levels I designed half the weapons. I was so good that I had teachers at my school asking me for advice on how to do certain things in UE2. Then I realized I couldn't draw. Then I got a job in IT instead. I still have 90% of my old maps which I'm thankful for and still have some maps I never even released to the public due to glitches that 18 year old me couldn't fix. Now I look at them and wonder how I ever did any of it.
Not just only for Shrek 2, but I think 2004 might be one of the best movie years of ALL TIME. The Incredibles Eternal Sunshine Mean Girls Napoleon Dynamite Collateral The Village Howl’s Moving Castle Garden State The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou Shaun of The Dead Prisoner of Azkaban
When Half-Life 2 came out only one of my buddies had a pc powerful enough to run it. The graphics were next level at the time, I remember just staring at the water in awe, moving objects with gravity gun was mind blowing. In my top 5 games off all time for sure.
My 10 favorite games from 2004: 1. Shadow Hearts: Covenant 2. Metal Gear Solid 3 3. Dragon Quest V Remake 4. Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 5. Half Life 2 6. GTA: San Andreas 7. Day of Reckoning 8. Def Jam: FFNY 9. Halo 2 10. NFL 2K5
How did Metal Gear Solid 3 not get scored higher by critics? Metal Gear Solid 3 was at least a 9 or 10 in my opinion for it's excellent stealth gameplay, voice acting and story! Darn critics Metal Gear Solid 3 would have made this list if you had scored it higher. Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater is definitely one of the best games of all time despite not making this list in my opinion. Lastly I blame the critics for not scoring Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater higher not Triple Jump.
I understand your point, but please take into consideration what the beginning of the video says. It's a list of top games by CRITICS and PLAYER REVIEWS. Which factores in every single reviewer who couldn't complete a certain boss or stage, or didn't understand a certain plot point. AND it also does not take into account all the small details and nuances (some of which I'm literally learning today) that MGS3 pulled off. The game was ahead of its time yes, but that's part of why it didn't bust when it was released. Not to mention its story, because I think Kojima literally shit his own pants coming up whit that story, just to make every individual player who played the game cry, believing in something, and then bawling their eyes out at the ending. It was just too complex for the expectations of a simple shooter game, and needed time to age. But it did age like the finest of wines.
@@mr.majkenocs I understand Triple Jumps ranking criteria. I also disagree with you that gamers back then didn't appreciate a masterpiece like Metal Gear Solid 3. Metal Gear Solid 3 was just as good back then as it is now not because it aged like fine wine. Basically Metal Gear Solid 3 has always been good in my opinion. Those user reviews could also be from people who don't like stealth action shooters or Metal Gear games so I also blame those user reviews for Metal Gear Solid 3 not being on the list.
@@LiquidSnake690 Okay first of all I'm sorry for misunderstanding your comment, on second read it's obvious you're not blaming Triple Jump, but the critical reviews of the time. What I tried to point out though was in lesser part the players not understanding and appreciating the game, but critics not recognising it for the masterpiece it was and still is. It's just a weird paradox where everyone agrees that the game is milestone in stealth (and overall shooter) games but somehow is rarely mentioned in mainstream media.
NFL 2K5 was also dope because if you were too hungover to get off the couch and play the game, you could just sit at the menu screen and it would start up a full game for you to watch.
I was a teenager in the 90s, at that time for FPS there was only ONE game, and that pushed (or exceeded) the limits of the hardware. My best games of 2004: Grand Theft Auto San Andreas Far Cry The Sims 2 Goldeneye Rogue Agent The Punisher Half Life 2 Super Mario 64 DS Def Jam Fight For NY Tony Hawk's Underground 2
It's crazy to think how good UT2K4 is, when UT3 released it was so underwhelming compared to the predecessor that the big paid competitions eventually rolled back to UT2K4 or Q3 for the following years
Nice content bro. Great! 👍 The Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow game is a controversial game in my country Indonesia, and the game is banned here by the government, but I don't know if the game is still banned or not??
Am I surprised that half life 2 is at the top? No. Am I surprised that valve isn't releasing half life 3?? Yes I am and so is everyone else, you made an amazing game and its aged incredibly well. Mind you I played it on a console which anyone who has played this knows that the PC version is a much better option, but still an enjoyable experience on the consoles all the same.
Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door: if only we knew what would happen after Super Paper Mario. SPM had different and not as good gameplay but to balance that, it also had the best story in a Mario game. Every Paper Mario since then...
