On a bright side this is the most we’ve heard from SU’s woodwind section in a marching season.
I forgot SU had woodwinds.
😂 Didn't even know they had woodwinds.
They finally giving them a chance to shine.
Harold Booker exactly they met famu with manners
Back in the 90s these bands use to be so🔥
I was at the game, both were good. FAMU had the sound and clarity. SU had better song selections. It seemed as if both bands tried to prepare for the others strength: SU did more ballads (which FAMU usually wears the crown for ballads) FAMU did more up to date upbeat tempos (SU leads everyone else). Whst you don't see in video was both bands holding back somewhat, it was visible at the game.
Smh yeah they were both outta their comfort zone. I'm kinda shocked to hear SU sound like that.
Su ballads was sounding better tho so they all around are better than FAMU
I think this battle was probably better in person....
It definitely was
Way better in person
It was
J. Phillips Media, LLC it was bro southern got in they ass tho
Fam to big to sound so weak
They're like less than half the size they were in like 09. They're just still rebuilding their program since the incident tbh.
Famu shot themselves in the foot once they played that rap tune..they fell right into southerns trap 🤦🏽♂️
Enjoyed both bands, but that SU “Available to You” was the DIFFERENCE. ... and I am a 45+ year Marching 100 FAN (4 generation FAMU graduate family). SU with win!!! #MorehouseMan #HBCULOVE #BLACKPRIDE
Doc Woc difference and SU in the same sentence 🥴
@@brianhollowayii9256 ??
Both of the bands at the top of their own respective styles. It was a great game and 5th quarter.
FWD Graphics you mean the Sonic Boom of the South is the Titan.
@@terryharris367 u jealous didn't your poo ass band perform some where why do jst fans keep following SOUTHERN I'm not understanding that will someone tell me please I guess it's an obsession they have for SU
@@creolenolamix1164 Chile please. Get over yourself lol
@@creolenolamix1164 enlighten me??😭 why you snapped like that shortie said in lighting me 😭😭😭😭
Well to my ears both bands sounded GREAT. Rich rich tones from every section. Find the positive in everything you’ll be much happier.
I like how SU is not really cranking and just showing they have book for ballads and can play at any level.
I Harris yeah cause they were definitely playing nice to FAMU🤣
@@Sagacious_X Yes they was 😅 I enjoy seeing different elements of SU. They can play whatever literally😂I never forget them playing batman theme song in middle of a 5th. Like wow
FAMU sounds good af, I think overall they have the better sound
YOU GOTTA GIVE PRAISES TO THE MOST HIGH BIGGER UPS S.U.....CANT WAIT TO HEAR THE NEXT ONE
Got to see it in person. Both bands sounded good💯🔥.
As I’m reading these comments I’m still trying to figure what felling off part Southern did are you all talking about🤷🏾♂️?... They are one of the top balanced bands every year, they sound better than just about every other HBCU band quality wise with PV and Jstate, they have strong volume, every section holding their own and the book is also there... I mean I’m really trying to understand where did they fell off at... I think what it is is folk want to see Southern out the top spot and knocked off their horse so bad that they would just come up with anything negative... Anywho family, to each is own, and until you can give me schools that have better arrangements, flawless field drills, balance, technique, control, a nice book and volume, In gonna roll with the Jags all day until someone really give them the smoke in every area.
They sound out of tune as usual, sorry but I’m not sure what people like about their sound. There is more to music than just volume.
Tennesses State Has the most balanced band year over year. They deliver power, balance, clarity, etc. As much as like Southern there are some really all round winners out there. BCU is very clean too. Kentucky is clean too. Power is a skill, cause everyone can't do it, but i digress. Like the direction famu is moving. But there's more in that engine. Let it rip! No one drives a v8 at 10mph when you at the red-light next another v8.
SU the G*O*A*T and much respect to famu and all HBCU bands nothing like it on the planet.
Both bands sound great. In my opinion Southern had a better song selection, coupled with a more sophisticated and intricate sound.
Cranking!! how could you tell what selection was being played? Maybe half way thru the song you got a clue.
The Hundred went into the crates with that Dawn Penn, but this 5th should have been better on both sides. These are my favorite two bands, but they gotta sharpen up a little bit.
Thanks for the footage Showtime... Great video... FAMU starting to get their size back.
It's been a long road travelled too Bra.
This may sound crazy but famu actually did great in the 5th, I was expecting su to destroy famu, but they didn't.
Yes this battle was MUCH closer than people are leading us to believe
What’s the name of SU first song
I would like to know as well sounds nice
Theme to "Police Woman" by Henry Mancini....same song Raekwon sampled for Outkasts "Skew It On The Bar-B"
@@djtrouble3946 They went way way back with that one.
@@williejhollinsjr.1070 They definitely dug in the crates.
All bands take pride in their musicianship, especially these two, but when you’re in a fifth quarter that’s obviously a battle, your songs and sound should reflect that. Ultimately it’s about pleasing the crowd, which clearly Southern did this entire game.
Bruh really...Da Jukebox wrecked shop. 💪
OMG! I loved them both- What Amazing Programs!!!!😄😍
FAMU’s band was all inclusive which shows great strength through their diverse reportoire and cohesiveness 🥁🎼🎶🎵🎺🎷. Total📦🙌🏾❤️💯
Total non bias: both schools needs to do some work
Green Hornet I agree surprisingly 😳. Was expecting a massacre!
Both sound like shit to me lol. Might just be my ears
This we can agree on.
Agreed !
What a well-detailed critique lol
Ima get killed for this comment but.... 😔 This battle was not what I thought it was going to be. I'm glad I didn't go. SU I will have to see what yall have in JSU because this can't be it. 14,15,16,17 was killer year. Yall got JSU nipping at your heels and Miles, PVAM and Stillman coming up fast... Always 💛💙💛💙 not matter what.
Yeah u trippin 14 & 15 SU was having down years compared to this😂😂 and Other bands have gotten better since then
@@MCspitta 😂😂😂😂😂😂.... How stupid you sound. You better go back and listen 👂 again... 😒😒
@@MCspitta other bands have gotten better. No doubt. Not that SU need to worry about it... But 14 and 15 were down years?? . Man where they get these people from... Listen to tourist when the played JSU and it compare to what you heard tonight...
@@MCspitta14 and 15 were definitely decent years for SU lol. This right hear doesnt sound to hot at all
J. Phillips Media, LLC y’all obviously don’t remember all them mess ups in 14&15 the arrangements they played at the time helped them more than anything but those were definitely down years by SU standards...lol I’m not saying they sound nice here but let’s not sugar coat how BAD other bands were back then too
This was like watching paint dry..not the quick drying paint either 😴 🛏
Dope battle. Both sound good. SU has more wow factor! They seemed over-prepared for FAMU. 🤫
NSULegion totally agree!
How can you be over prepared, it's take no prisoners around here.
very sad. su learns over 90 songs every year. It's called a BOOK. They didn't even have to open their book to battle FAMU b/c FAMU is not a challenging competitor. They saved their BOOK to use in upcoming REAL battles against SWAC schools. They prepare a four hour video of every song they performed each year. Check it out.
FAMU is like a fine wine. Southern is like some strong whiskey. Both great in their own styles. However, i think tonight we wanted whiskey. SU with the W. Their power and intensity is too much for FAMU. Slaughter fest in the stands. SU wasn’t playing no games.
Yessssssssssss lawd
This is the perfect analogy. Wine vs Whiskey.
This 5th quarter has brought to you by ZZzquil
i agree
LMBO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
🤣😂🤣😂😂
🤣😂😅😆😅😂
Anthony Pierce Amen
Each band had good and bad songs. Each school displayed there style fairly well. SU - high brass big band sound and FAMU - symphonic classical sound. No real comparison; it’s a good thing it’s still early in the season.
You had to be there in person.. The sound from SU is unmatched.
Clearly I’m a JSU fan but I’m glad to see southern representing the SWAC so well !!!... these MEAC schools gone learn the SWAC is a beast when it comes to Music!!!!!
Battle was decent
Lol negative 👎🏿
SU that is what it feels like to be cramped in a corner lol
And...
Ummm, we’ve always sat in the corner in that stadium. We just dont complain about it. Learn history before posting
I thought I was the only one that peeped that
@Truth B Told exactly what I was thinking
They learned at tcu last year had them in the corner in the sun and there was conplaints
SU 1st song could go on a Super Hero movie. I really liked that one.
I couldn't agree more my favorite song in the fifth
SOUTHERN at 17:06 will NEVER lose its affect lol
And FAMU's response made it more epic than it should've been
It was basically over as far as I'm concerned... Fam never recovered after that song...And I'm from Duval...🤷🏾♂️
Al I do is think of you started horrible........
I dont like the arrangement
I dont know the guys name who was directing.. but he needs some work. I dont think hes a fit for Southern
He does great arrangements but it was just all i do that i wasnt feeling this this time thas all.... Big ups tho
Dandre Singleton nah.... his arrangements arent cutting it.. dont think hes a fit for Southern.. no offense
The runs were pretty bad
Where is Famu’s tubas dang🤦🏽♂️
I have to give the edge to the Jukes, but both bands held it down.
But I think the SU Board of Supervisors should create the title of Marching Band Director and make Simmons Director of the Human Jukebox the moment he gets promoted to Associate Director of Bands.
DeAndre Noel he’s their best arranger lol they can’t afford to have him splitting focus
@@aonsonfmitchell True, but he's got the most charisma of anyone on the staff. Plus, if it comes to that he can always hire new arrangers on line.
DeAndre Noel true, Haymer was the best arranger in the swac and when he became bd they didn’t fall off
I totally agree Brian should be band director 💯

What was the name of of the song between that time?
Very credible musical reply..
SAD, VERY SAD. SU WAS NICE TO FAMU'S DISNEY STYLE OF R&B *& TOURIST WAS THE ONLY RAP SONG THEY PLAYED IN THE 5TH. SO DON'T TRY TO MAKE IT SEEM LIKE THEY ONLY PLAYED RAP. EVERY SONG THEY PERFORMED IN THE THE 5TH (gospel, ballads, r&b) THEY PLAYED BETTER THAN FAMU EVER COULD. FAMU WAS TOO WEAK TO SHOW UP & Battle in the zero quarter.
No contest for the Dolls, they were supafly as always! ❤
No Contest .. Discredits your reply.. Bias ( no problem if's that's your position)But you don't help your musical Cred..
The people trying to make this seem like this was a battle is funny 😂😂
SWAC Bands have an unmatched swag that the MEAC lacks.
At least this 5th was better than BCU vs JSU 5th.
FAMU did sound great tho.
Who won JSU or BC?
Reginald Eberhart BCU won the game...the Boom destroyed Cookman and they were holding out.
@@deldavis5457 that's what I was actually asking...lol thanks
Depends on the MEAC band NSU & A&T are a different story
@@lazurusredd8682 Agreed, Fla bands don't really meet the intensity.

Brian Simmons strikes again...
I'm available to you!! Smh!! Warm up the bus!!!
I love FAMU but I’m Available To You had me giving SU a standing ovation....LOVED IT
It was great but they needed to slow it down a bit.
I see FAMU finally gaining their size back... but this was more like a friendly competition than an actually battle 🤷🏾♂️
SU for the w. Albeit, it wasn't a slaughter like I expected. FAMU was cleaner but super boring. I was completely sold with SU's selections but it at least kept my attention.
Famu sounds great and is one of the best.....I just wish there were some dancers as the icing on the cake. more entertainment
Ikr! Why they don't have any dancers?
@@RJ25255 Dr. Foster said its a distraction away from the band and the sound which is most important
@@tctevin2233 I disagree with him. They add more entertainment! It's boring just watching the band. My opinion lol

Southern UNIVERSITY JUKES won this BATTLE and I was there !
As a Jukebox fan why we sound sloppy today
Today????
@@RJ25255 phone type fast
And Southern's gospel ballad was very well written.
The "all i do" is a prime example of what im saying about arrangements.. its not cutting it.. no offense but this guys arrangements arent SU ready. Haymer would have done so much more with that song.i dont know the guys name but his arrangements tend to be all over the place and arent cohesive. They dont flow musically. Taylor shouldnt even have allowed it to be played if it doesnt meet standard.
I must say this I totally agree with you I do not like Todd arrangements at all and no he is not SU ready 😒 all honestly Taylor and Todd need to go
I'm going with SU slightly but really wasn't feeling All I Do
I think Southern played down to their competition. They didn’t play their style. It showed.
The name of SU’s first song is “Police Woman” theme song 1970
Never heard SU sound this bad #bringhaymerback
Nikka 2 haymer need to pay them back 🤭
Just check the last 2 weeks🤷🏾♂️
This battle didn’t have me hyped at all but both bands sound very lovely with there slow jams 🤞🏾❣️💯
Lack luster battle. Expected more from SU
Both Bands Killed it! Yes I remember when SU back when I was h.s. would really bring it. The aggression as many have said. I get that. I heard FAMU at the rose parade and they sound great in person.
I would say musically SU book was a lil harder rhytmically and harmonies on their arrangements were more of a challenge then FAMU and even though a lil rough around the edges it still sounded AMAZING!!!!
Questionable selection from FAMU.....Elsa's Procession???? For a 5th qtr. battle??? hmmmmm. Interesting to say the least. They tore it up but.....I'd guess maybe 10% of the crowd knew that song?? jus sayin, gotta play standards but also play to your audience
@Amsterdam Cutie there's a video of FAMU playing purple carnival which is one of the hardest marches on 1st bone
I’m gonna keep it real w/ you chief, SU fell off HARD. smh. All due respect to Doc, Haymer etc and all the greats who help build the juke dynasty, but the past few years have sounded sloppy as hell w/ no aggression at all.
Blues Bros I’m still trying to figure what felling off part are you and some others talking about🤷🏾♂️?... They are one of the top balanced bands, the sound better than just about every other HBCU band quality wise other than PV and Jstate, they have volume and the book is also there... I mean I’m really trying to understand where did they fell off at... you surely exaggerate, however SU does need new blood in the director's seat. Some one more on Doc's level. The band is losing its core fundamentals and standards. Lazy marching. Dolls not up to standard, poor song selection, etc.
Sounds like another down year for the Juke. Hopefully the Boon takes advantage this year
😂🤣 clearly you haven’t heard the Juke in person this year, they took it super easy on FAMU cause their not a threat......but don’t be fooled they still some beasts....plus they don’t get really serious until they play other SWAC schools, MEAC boring af
su killing it but they ballads don't pull u in like they used to feels forced on you if u know what I mean, they still sound great though
doc used to call that "begging for house". over writing the song. just like singers who do too much .
People actually think Southern have a good, in-tune sound 💀💀
SU reminds me of Nick, when he knows without a doubt that he is better, he want do you in. SU seem to be holding back. We know they could've slaughtered and the band seem not be whole, or maybe it's that small space their in.
Travel band
Thats not the whole band.. Thank god it wasn't.. Famu lucky
This was needed. Southern needed to play against the marching 100 in order to recalibrate their ears. Marching 100 will expose your tonality/phasing/and clarity.
Marching 100 needed to play Southern in order to create a hunger for sound!
It’s very early in the season, so just imagine late October/November when these 2 bands tap into their true sound/their true selves. Wide open
JSU ain’t fucking off tho.....
The Marching 100 is overrated and based off legacy alone. Southern is by far the more consistent out of the two. This is like comparing apples and oranges anyways. I doubt southern will ever change their sound for anyone and vice versa. You sound stupid.
Here, pee in this cup..... you need to be drug tested. Southern from 2000 and southern frm 2019 have 2 completely different tones/sounds. They are finally phasing better
There’s something missing this year from southern ... arrangements are not the problem... that ignorance has slowly left the band for musicianship and quality I see.... idk this just not the southern I’m used to hearing.
David Johnson their missing the "wow" factor theyve always had. It seems theyre getting better each game though.
They are still ignorant, got watch the zero quarter
And plus the playing Famu
It may change later in the season... SU playing possum.
Very boring this year
Definitely took FAMU for the W. In person they sounded much better than SU. SU just had too many tone issues with their btone and trumpets
For those that chose to comment, please use full words and have substance in your commentary. Reading these comments, I feel like taking out a red pen.
This isn't composition 101... I hate the dam grammar police. I'm pretty sure there's a poor overworked and underpaid teacher out there that would love for you to help them grade RUclips COMMENTS!
No need to hold ur legs up on a gospel song....not appropriate. But the best arrangment I've heard thus far of IM Available
Somebody said Southerns trumpets fell off from last year.......... yea I agree
SU Ever Day All day
I agree brother
Down year for southern...
Horrible so far
Two down years in a row
My opinion, but I feel like SU dumb down for this battle. To many slow jams. Y'all should've gave FAMU that hit factor like y'all did little itty bitty Edward Waters IJS lol. Honestly, I feel like I enjoyed JSU vs BCU better just because JSU gave them the business lol
Yah i guess they were trying to showem they could play with balance but we like that loud in your face shit.... We don't want bose speakers at a battler we want trunk mids and highs, as loud as we can get it without distortion!
@@j.martinguidry4051 Yeah, they definitely tried to show FAMU balance and blend, but failed miserably.
Well SU shouldn't have tried that then. AAMU and JSU can pull it off and get on their level. SU should've just stuck to what they do best is crank and put some stank on it and make us all SWAC family proud. Nothing's exciting about BCU or FAMU band to me lol.
ohagiiman the crowd reaction says otherwise, it’s clear FAMU took an L still
@@j.martinguidry4051 lololo.. You have been Cranked out!!!Your ears have been musically shot!!That's what you like.. to each his own..Just don't play in the cold!!!lolo

I didn’t like this 5th. Probably was better in person
I didn’t realize the drum major was actually playing his instrument this time around. Cool!
Nice overall reminds me of those early 90s battles. SU just blows to loud can't understand what their playing at times. FAMU loud with annunciation, but choice of music sometimes is suspect. I personally wanted to see a remix of both playing Vice Versa & Say La La.
And so for all new songs in the 5th for you hatters
MDB GUNS Bro you don’t listen to your band every song they played they played last game and 90% of y’all field show y’all been doing since Houston...jitt stop cappin
SU with the win

Please. Where? Southern sounded sloppy as hell in this battle. No aggression at all. And that field show was ASS
1st Round:
I thought Southern's 1st song was a HORRID choice, and FAMU said, "Don't worry, we could do worse!"
2nd Round
SU: The ending was way too extended but good song.
FAMU: Sounded like shit being released in a commode.
Winner: SU
3rd Round:
SU: Southern be thinking these long dramatic endings be hittin, and they don't. Know when to say when! GEEZUS! Poor taste.
FAMU: All I could do is blink. It's safe! And you played a safe song, safely.
Winner: I'll give FAMU a sympathy point.
Round 4:
SU: Tuba breakdown. Saw the director cooking up something, and he burnt it.
FAMU: By now I'm just starting to think they're all hype.
Winner: The Ozone Layer, I guess. Neither one was good.
Round 5:
SU: Loud. Went for it.
FAMU: What in the entire FUCK turned into, "Who graduation???"
Did the cymbal player at the end mess up?
They played a 3rd tune? TRASSSSSHHHHHH
Don't bring this shit to the SWAC!
WINNER: SU
SU was nice to FAMU in the 5th for the most part.
Please wee heard SU play in Houston the same as tonight
gking404 yep still better
Really? Lol. SU is not going to dominate FAMU, never did, never will. As a matter of fact, this was their golden opportunity to do so. The 100 is closing in on being the 100 and everybody see's FAMU's program is finally starting to resurrect.
I can't wait to see FAMU try to squeeze in that corner Southern is gonna put them in next year.
Su did a FAMU ON FAMU AND WON😅🤣
Brian probably had already wrote it this past year or summer, but I like how SU played that Nicole Bus “You” which has been 1 of Bama states 5 arrangements this year 🤔
Famu clean man , just off that they get a slight W. Famu came with some interesting tunes. They did some stuff Su wasn't expecting.

(your) & (Listen) lol
Brass sections made me smile boy @9:14
Gone be great SU!!!
When you over play you lose sound!!! And FAMU used to have such clear and concise percussion, espicially using the different sized base drums!
Famu ..PLEASE go to Alabama or Louisiana and get an arranger... let them write only for the 5th qtr and thank me later no fee is owed!
We have SARG, the greatest arranger ever
As a SWAC Lifer from Alabama, I disagree. FAMU has one of the BEST arrangers of any HBCU, especially when it comes to ballads and marches. When it comes to the Top 40 stuff he sticks to musicianship instead of power and or jazzing it up. That's why it seems off or boring. Although I was thoroughly entertained, especially since SU played outside of their usual box simply because they were battling FAMU. Every 5th doesn't have to be a full crank session.
@@JaeJDay exactly FAMU SOUND!!! A lot of FAMU arraignments are used by other HBCUs they just put a twist on it.
Hell yes

Is the second SU song Calling My Name by Hezekiah Walker?
Germaine Mapp Lord I’m available to you
Harold Booker oh ok. Those songs have similar lyrics that’s why i was confused lol
I'll be in Baton Rouge this coming season (hopefully this COVID mess is done by then). FAMU will always be #1 in my book. But I don't want Southern to hold back. Blow our ears owf please.
