      You know Curt Smith almost had no involvement in the making of the first 2 albums. He was said to show up once in awhile and had his part. But it was very minor. ❤ so I don't really give him to much credit. Roland, Ian Stanley and Chris Hughes were the force behind the first 2 albums.

    I grew up thinking those two were brothers. I suppose they effectively were/are. It's uncanny how similar they sound vocally;almost indistinct from each other at times, but you hear their individuality in their speaking voices. Bet they can't have been more than 25 there. Certainly have the arrogance of young men, but at the same time, mature insights. Great guys.

      Right! It has been about a month since I started listening to them ( I mean putting aside Everybody wants to rule the world and Shout, because who doesn't know those two songs?) And at the begging i thought there was only one singer ( Roland ) then I realized it was Curt who sang Ewtrtw and he basically sings most of the songs from the hurting too! Then I thought they must be sibilings, because they even looked alike to me, not anymore tho but i still struggle to differenciate their voices mainly in their first two albums! I guess it def. has something to do with the fact that they have known each other since they were 13

    I think Curt's comments were a little out there but a) he was 24 with his first taste of fame and b) the American rock scene at the time did suck. I think they can both be pretentious when they want to; it certainly comes out in Roland in the later interviews but no one's immune to it especially two guys who are constantly being asked their opinions on things. Nowadays, though, he loves America, and this was taken 30 years ago. I seriously doubt he'd say anything similar today.

    • @pr3ttyb0n3z2
      @pr3ttyb0n3z2 8 лет назад +16

      Lolo Madi they were pretty much opposites, Curt always fit the fame thing and Roland actually didn't like it all. Curt always speaks more and while both can be blunt (are you in the UK? If so then you know what I mean, we do it here in Aus too. The no BS thing) Curt has always been more dominant there but Roland can come out with some zingers.
      Curt is more factual and grounded, Roland is more spiritual. They've always been an odd pair as they were never close like you'd expect but seemed to accept that combined musically they offset each other and it just worked so damn well.

    • @Miniluv86
      @Miniluv86 7 лет назад +44

      As someone who has followed the band for many years, tff's history as you have painted it is a bit skewed.
      1) They knew each other since the we're 12 years old. They came from similar backgrounds, as they were both raised by single mothers. Socially, the we're very close, more like "brothers than best friends" as Roland once put it. They even engaged in primal scream therapy as teenagers together to help deal with their tough upbringing. When they came into their 20's, and married their sweethearts, respectively, they still lived within close proximity of each other. It wasn't until touring, and the band's popularity, that they got pretty sick of living in "each other's pocket," as Curt put it. The arguing and the tense chemistry sort of became the band's legendary persona. But it never started that way.
      2) Although Curt seemed the more inclined to handle celebrity and media, it took a toll on Curt the most. It's a large part of the reason he left the band and ran away to NYC, before settling down in L.A. The constant touring and traveling was something Curt credited as leading to the failure of his first marriage.
      3) Believe it or not, Roland and Curt were both pretty spiritual, more so now as they have gotten older.
      4) Along with repairing their musical relationship, it appears, by all accounts, that they have repaired their friendship too. It actually helps that Curt lives in America and Roland still lives in U.K.
      I think we all should be careful about projecting our own views unto the band.

    What makes this band great is their unique composition and use of instruments. To me that makes them exponentially better than the majority of the American bands in the 80s, especially the ones that they mentioned. So, yeah Curt's comments were a little arrogant, but he makes a great point about the problems with American music (which is ESPECIALLY bad this decade). You have to admire these guys for taking their music outside the box and succeeding at it, cause their music is AWESOME!!

    To be fair, he said some places were shitholes and others were the best places he'd been to. It's the same everywhere really. There are good and bad parts in every country in the world.

    Tears for Fears is considered one of the British groups in classic rock, Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal interviewed on No Limits in 1985. Smith just likes to sing "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" from their second album Songs from the Big Chair.

      CelesteK I agree. Where there's great talent, there's always going to be issues. Sadly, these issues rob the rest of us from whatever great messages they might have had to give.

    I think that if he was referring to the American-rock music / pop-mainstream, then yes back in 85' it was pretty much regurgitated 70's classic rock. Though inspite of this, American music is still responsible for everything that British artists has brought back to the States, merely improving upon the sound. In 85', Michael Jackson was huge. The punk rock scene in New York City was huge, both scenes were dynamic, new, and exciting. Curtis is a prude who listens to the radio all day.

    @Chorltonia oh please....this was not filmed 'yesterday'. u know how people are when they're young...candid, spunky, straightforward. as i've said in my earlier comment, this was just part of curt smith being young. in other interviews of them, it was perceived that curt was the more approachable of the two. but hey, this was taken decades agooooooooooooooooo!

    Hey, I don't like certain places in America either. That's life. Having spent 2 years living in Germany in 84 and 85, I can tell you that coming from europe to america would be a HUGE difference. Over in europe, they were busy wondering if two other countries were going to stage their after school fight on european soil and ruin the whole place. It's a different mindset. I think the last generation that was truly HONEST about America's place in the world was the youth of the 60's.

    It’s cool to see them back in the day and I’m glad they’re back touring again. They both were always more mature than their age. Sadly, it was the death of Roland’s first wife that instigated the reunion, but it proves that a great friendship WILL endure even the greatest of disagreements. Keep rocking guys!

      i think he is free but got charged with some more offences. It is all a bit of a witch hunt really. Paedos are the witches of the 21st century i think. people need someone to hate and they are the flavour of the month. i have no love for them as i was raped by a male teacher as a young boy so i know the damage that is caused. As a Christian i HAVE to forgive with all my heart as I was lost in my own sin too before I got saved.

    @TearsforFearsGirl I don't think it was so much that Curt was being an ass so much as it was that he just had to get his point across. I think that to him getting his point across, that the American music scene is boring, :) I think he's got a very valid point. :)

      I read somewhere that they were friends since middle school..but things started going south when Curt was kicked to the curb so to speak, leaving him with nothing to contribute since the producer had Roland be in charge of almost everything and Curt felt left out....I think thats when things started to go bad and it effected their relationship....I think they are slowly building their friendship to where it used to be...
