      Agree with you about fb. Gave up on that a while ago. That was a big day deleting the whole show. It felt good and was totally fine with deleting everything. Made a simple email connection after that and never went back.
      Back to the real deal, the S/S stuff makes a great smoker usable for daily cooks. Nathen and Luke are the two S/S guys I use. They have email addresses in my description area for sure. Looking to put the rotisserie on it soon.

      @@Craig6519 hey, maybe you can offer some insight to a topic that just popped up here. A question came up that maybe the grates are to tight and fire chunks will not drop down into bucket and light the wood chunks put into bucket for more smoke flavor. Have you or do you add chunks of wood to your bucket and will the ash dropping down light the chunks? If you can share your experience it would be awesome 👌

      Nathan makes this one I think. It's been awhile .
      I put his links down in the description area along with his email info. You will find it easy. I have heard that depending on the fuel you use for bbqing that you might find it a bit hard to light chunks under the grate. I never had this problem but placing a few smaller chunks or tumbleweeds into the bucket would aid in getting them going I would think. Good luck

Sorry, for the short answer, but I have been getting YT reports where my videos are only viewed for a few moments. So this video made carefully to spread out the clues so that anyone really looking will need to watch a bit more for the answers. With this mod can you still put wood chunks in the ash bucket and have falling embers cause them to catch fire / smoke? I don't have one of these gravity feed smokers yet, but definitely looking into it.

    • @MXP90DL
      @MXP90DL  4 года назад +1

      The quick answer is yes for me. I have heard a few say they are having problems, but its the fuel being used. A cheaper briquette with high fillers may be this problem. I used professional kingsford with no problem and lump Lazzari charcoal with no problems. I don't even have problems with wood chunks doing long cooks like ribs... I just posted my new years rib cook where I show this setup.

      Yes, We have his email in our description area. When you scan down you will see the section that talks about the grate. It has a blue link to FB but if you look at the line above it that is his email address. YT does not make that a clickable link so maybe you will need to jot it down. I tried to cut and paste it here but again YT did not allow that on this phone.
      He will get back to you quickly I am sure, and if you tell him You found it here that will be great. Thanks in your interest.

    Gary- The fire grate mod looks interesting--but big concern is how the ash bucket won't naturally develop the smokey flavor [we all crave]. Thus-did you find your Smoker Tube in the ash bucket develop adequate smoke? I've gotten pretty good results with wet soaked chunks and lump charcoal, so am interested to see your comments.

    • @MXP90DL
      @MXP90DL  4 года назад

      Interesting can I say you typed won't develop instead of may not develop. I have not done a cook since installing and I have not put my chunks in the bucket yet to find out if it "won't " or "may not" burn to add flavor. I had these warnings when I installed the kabob rods in my last one and even told the fire bed would jam up and put fire out and also I would not be able to reach high temperatures for grilling.
      I can say that none of those warnings ⚠️ ever popped up. The MB went along and did everything the same. As I said in this video " I'm really looking forward to using this for the next couple of cooks" . Other than your concern, I also heard from the builder of these units some of the same thing. It's posted around here, he said he hit the chunks with the blow torch in the beginning of cook. That just maybe a possible warning and workaround for some users or it maybe the hard facts. In video I brought out the tape measure and was looking at gaps because I had a bit of a concern but all I found was that my old one and the new one were using the same gaps.
      I don't have any cooks planned for a few days and it will be awhile before I go forward in knowing for sure. If I had to guess, and this is a weak guess. I think it depends of what fuels you would burn. Kingfords regular and professional burn a bit different and one might be more problematic. Who knows. I use the Lazzari natural lump mesquite and feel it will not be a problem lighting chunks below in bucket in the Lazzari rains down bits and small chunks a lot.
      My next cook I am sure I'll mention this so we can all see what happens.
      So that's where we are. We don't know but we will find out. We have a viewer here who said he has one of these and uses it. Maybe he will bring his experience to this topic.

      @MXP90DL  4 года назад

      @@Craig6519 good information. That supports my thoughts that the new grate has the same spacing as my old one with kabob sticks in it. You just helped me from going out today and doing another test burn. I'll just wait now for the next cook and just do everything like before and expect that the chunks will light.
      Thank you 🖐

      We just received confirmation that the user with this grate is not having problems with his chunks lighting by the falling ash. Thats great information.
      After rereading your post I see that I didn't answer the tube smoke question.
      I liked using it on my Weber and it seemed I was picking up a better smoke ring in my cooks with it. I also liked how the aromas of burning wood were while standing around. This was when I started looking for an upgrade and was thinking of getting a pellet smoker for control of temperatures and what I thought would be better smoke flavor. Many months of looking and the Recteq was becoming my choice of grills that I would buy.
      I was looking for a friend who had a pellet grill to have a taste and see what it was really like to own. I am glad I did, the results were disappointing in that I was missing what I call the real wood smoked flavors. So before abandoning pellets completely I started looking into pellet quality. It was eye opening in how some companies made lazy attempts to make pellets. With additive and binders. Nothing you would want on your food. Turns out, I feel these cheep fuels were made and sold for home heaters to warm a home and not cook food. So when buying for grilling, you would have to stay away from heating fuels if the labeling was adequate. After buying the purest for grilling It did bring up the taste but still lower than other cooking woods. I discontinued the pellet idea.
      Then finding the gravity feeder using all my favorite woods and lumps came along. As you know, it is the real answer to home bbq'ing with real commercial cooking with flavors.
      If your still with me, I have a large bag of premium pellets that I hate to see go to waste and when I saw Robert doing cold smoking it got me thinking that I could burn my pellets and not toss it into outside firepit just to burn it up.
      I did not notice any flavor to my ribs when I used it. All I noticed was the smell in the air. So I'll add it to my cooks till I burn all the pellets up and then retire the tube and be done with pellets. Pellets are just to efficient of a burn to add flavors to cooks in my opinion. When I see guys who have other grills and MB it seems the webers, pellets are collecting dust over the gravity feeder.

  • @dman357

    don't understand why you would be using a smoke tube. You can put wood flavor in the basket and the hot embers would light it and generate your smoke,

    • @MXP90DL
      @MXP90DL  3 года назад +1

      Why thats easy to answer. I have some followers who are concerned that the new grate mods will not allow enough embers to fall into bucket to light real chunks of wood to light and smoke for flavor. I do tests to see if the grates will allow enough falling bits of fire to do that. The original grate would easily drop more than enough, in fact to much and was wasting fuel. The point was the new grates slowed down and reduced waste but not the functionality. In a few comments from other viewers and in other videos I posted they liked burning pellets of their favorite smoke flavors and had asked if the tube would light and burn with new grate. I did that for them. I only used the tube when I was cooking on my weber to add extra smoke flavors over the Kingsford briquettes. So I already had it and used it to test. I have used it a few times with some of my favorite pellets, but the MasterBuilt and Lazzari lump does such a great job that pellets just don't add any extra flavor that I can notice. The chunks do a better job in all that. So this video had a few tests going on at the same time.
      Are you cooking on a MasterBuilt? What wood do you like best?
