For someone who lived the late sixties/early seventies, the most striking aspect of Peter Jackson 's work is that he gets the colors RIGHT! Most documentaries are in b&w or with faded colors. Here, it litteraly SMELLS the late sixties, like they were in my memories. You have the feeling to be in the studio with them.

Both Paul and Ringo have said that in the end, the Beatles were a ‘tight little band.’ They could pick up their instruments and play. I’m pretty sure they were proud of that, and though as you said, all the accounts focused on the band breaking up. And to Paul’s credit, he said that footage was supposed to be displaying the process of the Beatles making an album, but instead captured the dissolution of the band. Now, however, as a 55 year old man, I realize that these guys were friends-closer even. Everybody has fights. But time puts all that behind you eventually. Before the lawyers, before the reports, the media, there were four guys who worked their craft together as well as any special forces A team fighting a battle. Together they were elite.

Well said. Totally agree with you. These clips show us the true situation as it was and the film (as good as it was) was edited to focus on the break up of the band and was full of tension and this was clearly intentional. So glad we’ll be able to see things in perspective now. What a great post.

Thanks Thomas for that comment, I too have been a fan of the Beatles since 1963. You as a fan , its so easy to get caught up in the hype travels along with a band , especially the Beatles. I completely agree with you. Would only like to add that along with being great friends, they had toured together a long time. Which strengthened their friendship to the point that they were as close or closer than some families. I believe that closeness was a big part of the breakup of the band, if you have siblings yourself there always that rivalry that is unavoidable. It all came to a screeching halt in our eyes, but to them it had been coming along for years. That's all, thanks Beatles brothers and sisters, ✌️ and 🤘.

My favorite funny moment was in the 3rd segment tonight. Heather's face when Yoko is screeching into the mic. A child's honesty. The film looks incredible with Peter Jackson's touch and it was so emotional to see them all together again. It really was like John and George were here again. Thank you Peter Jackson. Thanks Paul, Richie, Olivia and Yoko for making this available for all of us who experienced The Beatles in the 60's.

A few days ago I went out and subscribed to Disney+ and just finished watching the three episodes (watched one per day). They are incredible. It's amazing when you realize that they were all under 30 here - Paul was 26. The collaboration on songs as they developed them was incredible. You have to find a way to see the three episodes. It was great to see Billy Preston - I saw him once play with the Rolling Stones at the Forum in Los Angeles a long time ago. Also, the Beatles would bounce around the instruments as they tried things in the songs. The piano was played by different people, as needed. Listening to their thought processes is amazing. I highly recommend this!!!

I have seen it....it is, without doubt, the most engrossing documentary of any musical group--ever!...The clarity of the film makes you feel that this was recorded last week....and the stress the Beatles were feeling is also documented...but the continuity of this film explains a better truth than the original "Let It Be" ever could have...the love between these guys is palpable, even when they clash over ideas....Paul-reluctantly-steps up, and becomes at times, the leader, and the "glue" that keeps them going....Billy Preston really rejuvenates them when he sits in.....Yoko is always clinging to John, yet her presence seems rather benign....If you are a life-long fan of the Beatles, you will find yourself teary-eyed during certain moments...we are lucky to have this type of footage!

Imagine if the last two albums had been released in chronological order. The general narrative is Let It Be was the disaster that led to the breakup…but in truth, Abbey Road - a universally loved triumph - was where the final collaborations took place. This belies the notion that The Beatles went out with a weak and uneven record that Phil Spector overproduced to death. They actually walked after making one of the greatest albums EVER MADE.
No…creative and personal differences weren’t the main problem; the real culprit was a complete lack of management whom all four could trust. With a steady hand at the wheel of the business, The Beatles could have taken a Genesis-style sabbatical wherein Plastic Ono Band, All Things Must Pass and Band On The Run could’ve still happened…followed by a refreshed Fab Four reuniting in the mid 70s.

Of course there are a number of other bands that could Compete for that position, i.e. The Stones, The Who, Led Zepplin, ..... BUT, for what the FAB 4 brought to the Generational Table, the music they wrote almost like a Machine, the technical innovations invoked into all to follow and enjoy, including the Rubber Soul LP cover, and the sheer Genius of these four Lads from Liverpool, who Changed and led the Charge of the Pop Music Revolution. The Led the The BRITISH Invasion to America. The talent is Off The Charts, and clealry evident in the GET BACK Documentary.

@@guytansbariva2295 I think you misinterperted my point. As most true Beatle fans will state that They are the Best Band ever. I agree, as a Beatles fan, but also acknowledge that the statement is a unilateral one. The Beatles were an influence to all that followed, as they have all ( Pete Townsend, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton , etc.) mentioned in many interviews over the course of time. Get Back serves to show their Genius and accentuate their Greatness. But other bands have produced fantastic Music in their own right, in their Genres too. Hey, The Beatles, have acknowledged how they were influenced by Elvis, Little Richard (He and Fats Domino - the true Investors of Rock and Roll), & Buddy Holly. The Beatles took it to another Level with song writing, introducing many new innovations of recording, and an affect on the Baby Boomer generation like no other before or since. I think THAT'S what put them at the Top Of The Heap. The other bands I cited may have Bowed as you say to them, but really because The Beatles led the British Invasion Charge. The largest Bow taken is exemplified in Mic Jagger's speech when he spoke at the Indcution Ceremonies at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for The Beatles in 1985. It was gracious speech, well develivered and well spoken. It's on on You Tube.

Martin was their destiny and a perfect cog in the wheel but a cog nevertheless. The Beatles brought the talent and the fans lifted them up. @Richard Peddie They already had the raw appeal and were extremely popular before both Epstein and Martin. Epstein tidied up their image but yea, Martin truly was the 5th Beatle. He not only played on their records but suggested arrangement and time changes. Later, he was able to translate loose instructions like "make me sound like monks chanting" into songs like Tomorrow Never Knows. A brilliant producer and an integral part of their studio sound. The Rooftop Concert took place on January 30, 1969 at lunchtime on the roof of Apple Corps at 3 Savile Row. George Martin, Glyn Johns and Alan Parsons sat at the two 8-track recorders in the basement, while Mal Evans and Neil Aspinall had set up the equipment on the roof.
The Beatles appeared in the following line-up:
    John Lennon (vocals, guitar)
    Paul McCartney (vocals, bass)
    George Harrison (vocals, guitar)
    Ringo Starr (drums)
Billy Preston (e-piano) was there as a sideman.
The rooftop concert was filmed by several cameramen who were on the roof, in houses opposite and on the street. The original plan to use a helicopter for filming was not carried out.
    TitleEdit
The Beatles and Billy Preston played the following songs at the Rooftop Concert:
    Get Back (Lennon / McCartney) - 3:05
    I Want You (She’s So Heavy) (Lennon / McCartney) - 0:18
    Get Back - 3:04
    Don't Let Me Down (Lennon / McCartney) - 3:12
    I've Got a Feeling (Lennon / McCartney) - 3:30
    One After 909 (Lennon / McCartney) - 2:46
    Danny Boy (Weatherly) - 0:06
    Dig a Pony (Lennon / McCartney) - 3:44
God Save the Queen (Traditional) - 0:32
    I've Got a Feeling - 3:33
A Pretty Girl Is like a Melody (Berlin) - 0:05
    Don’t Let Me Down - 3:19
    Get Back - 3:01
Overall, the rooftop concert lasted just under three quarters of an hour.
From Savile Row, the rooftop concert could only be heard, not seen. So some people climbed the surrounding rooftops to watch the Beatles. Crowds formed on the street; the assembled residents and passers-by reacted partly pleased and partly angry to the music. An older lady said indignantly: "I just can't see any point in it." On the other hand, a young woman said with a laugh: "Yeah - that's great!"
Because of the large number of listeners, there was a risk of traffic chaos on Savile Row, which the police, who had meanwhile arrived, tried to prevent. The police eventually gained access to the roof of the Apple headquarters. There they warned the Beatles to play quieter, but did not break up the performance. But that is exactly what the Beatles had hoped for. Therefore, the director Michael Lindsay-Hogg later cut the film Let It Be in such a way that the impression arises that the Beatles' last live performance had been canceled by the police. Legendary!!

A common misconception is that Let It Be and Abbey Road were recorded separately. They weren't. In fact, you see them rehearsing Maxwell's Silver Hammer in Let It Be. They were recorded during the same six-month period using three different studios. The whole thing was a mess. The songs on Let It Be were just the first one's recorded during that period. They started out in January of 1969 at Twickenham Film Studios filming a documentary of what was supposed to be the rehearsals for a concert (a concert that really no one but Paul wanted to do). Most of the footage from the movie Let It Be is from the Twickenham sessions (minus the roof top concert). By February, tensions were increasing because George was fed up with being at Twickenham and did not want to do a concert. They compromised - they'd move back to Apple if he'd do the roof top performance. A lot of the footage from the upcoming documentary is from after they moved back to Apple and tensions had eased. These studio sessions lasted till the end of February and were supposed to be an album called Get Back (the front and back cover photos ended up being used for the Red and Blue albums). They had plenty of material and decided rather than release double albums back to back, they'd make another single album - Abbey Road. Here's the funny - most of the songs on Abbey Road were not recorded there. I Want You (She's So Heavy) was recorded at Trident. Octopuses Garden, You Never Give Me Your Money, and most of Something were recorded at Olympic. At the time, Abbey Road was still using an ancient tube driven 8-in/4-out REDD.51 mono mixing console that was basically designed for them. Trident and Olympic had "brand new" solid state 24-in/8-out TG 12345 stereo consoles. By April, Abbey Road installed TG 12345s and the remainder of the album moved back to Abbey Road through August. By then, they had scrapped the idea for the Get Back album. Instead, in June of 69, they told Glyns John to remaster the Twickenham sessions through the TG 12345 stereo console as a "soundtrack" album to the Let It Be movie that was fixing to be released. That is when Phil Spector got involved and added his "wall of sound". Which is why the songs recorded first were the last to be released. If it weren't for the introduction of the TG 12345 stereo console, they would not have remastered it. It would have came out in mono before Abbey Road like it was supposed to and without Phil Spector's "wall of sound". The "Let It Be: Naked" album is a remaster of those original REDD.51 recordings.

My first date with a girl was me taking my first girlfriend to see the Let It Be movie at a cinema in the city. Afterwards we went to the botanical gardens for a snog. That's what we called a heavy petting session in the late 1960s. I was already a massive Beatles fan and seeing that movie only made me a bigger fan! I would've enjoyed it just as much if I'd gone there by myself, but it was a lot sweeter with my girl. The song that really stood out for me was Dig A Pony, John's nonsense song. My girl was really taken with The Long and Winding Road. It was another two years before I took up playing guitar myself. My parents were British, Scottish and Welsh, and were very conservative, backwards looking people who my wife later described as being too old to have kids . . and they hated anything modern. We didn't even get a TV set until 1962, and TV came to Australia in 1959. Even my mother's parents had a TV set in 1960. My parents did their best (worst) to prevent me from even hearing pop music! Thankfully the old guy next door surreptitiously gave me a 9V transistor radio which I cherished beyond belief as my window to the world. I was playing other people's guitars right through 1971 and finally got my own acoustic guitar with my second pay packet in 1972 when I started full-time employment. I had a fantastic ear when it came to sounding out songs, and the Let It Be album was the second LP I ever sounded out, song by song in 1972. The Blues album, Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon by Status Quo was the first.

Of course, there was no bleed at all and that was why. What we did was "bleed" various instruments into each other until it sounded better. I like the natural bleed that the Beatles and others' records so often had. For all the reasons you said, it's the best way to record.

It's absolutely refreshing to see that they were actually still getting along, despite the self-inflicted pressure of 14 new songs, rehearsed, finalised and recorded, in only three short weeks. To be fair, Peter Jackson may be also trying to portray a brighter picture of a band on the edge of disintegration. For all that, I'm still excited to see this. Sadly, Disney Plus is a streaming service with a price tag and I have little interest in anything else on the channel.
You're spot on, Fil, about what it's like in the studio and the separation of band members. Been there and done that and my experience is that it leaves the music a little cold and less organic. My old band tried both methods of recording and doing it all together in the same room creates a much richer sound, which explains a lot of the clinical feel I get from the majority of modern music.

I guess because Disney is behind this ...they can get away with anything
