  • Replacing HID (low beam) Headlight on a 2010 Mazda CX-9 | [0015] 🚗
    I needed to replace a dying HID bulb on my wife's 2010 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring. I couldn't find any instructions (or any that cared for) and the only two videos I found showed the whole headlight assembly being removed.

    This is a $1,000 repair easily at the dealer.
    Think $120-$150/hr plus diagnostic. Oh thank you for saving this single father time and money with this video. Im changing out the driverside after 300k miles. This is a great car minus the electrical problems, its a quality built user friendly SUV. Thanks to mazda for making most repair and upkeep mostly easy for DIYer!

    Seriously time-saving (and headache-saving) video - thank you! Everything on my 2011 CX-9 Grand Touring was exactly where you showed it to be. Autozone sold me the wrong bulb and seeing this video showed me how to order and install the right one. My heartfelt gratitude to you for this informative video.

    To add to the video, to get the ballast out first it's a counter clockwise quarter turn, Easy way to get the ears off is to do one at a time and to use your thumb only, covering the front of the ear with your thumb and pushing in and back and then keeping the "in"pressure while bringing it forward. To put the ears back in, its the same, one at a time using your thumb to push back and in and then slowly release. it may take more than a few tries.

    Very much appreciated. Dealer wanted about $150.00 just to hook up to computer and perform a diagnostic due to one light being out. Claimed bulbs usually don't go out and that it could be a bad ballast. Car is 8 years old and first time bulb went out. Used your video to figure out clips and found Philips bulbs online for about $15/a piece. Going the dealer route could have easily cost about $500 to change one bulb. Robbery...

    This just saved me at least $200 bucks, maybe more. Mazda dealer wanted almost $300 for just the bulb. And, that did not include installation cost. Bought the bulb for $99 at PepBoys and installed myself in less that 15 with the help of this video. Figured out first part of unscrewing cover and detaching wiring harness on my own, but seeing video of clip to release bulb was the clincher. Thanks much.

      Looks easy but how do you get the silver piece off of the back of the bulb (or the ballast) once you unscrew the black housing cover?

    Very VERY helpful! I watched other videos and they all had standard H11 bulbs. I kept getting the wrong bulbs until I finally saw this video. Must just be a Grand Touring thing I dont know.. But thank you!

      Same thing for me. Literally, order the H11 and had to waste time returning them until I found this and then did it myself with bulbs that cost $10. Everyone in town wanted to charge me about $100 a piece. Thanks 😊

    It's a lot easier if you put a small mirror pointing the light bulb, then you will see the whole thing clearly. I've done it before.

    Discussed the squeeze clip with my Mazda Service Manager today. He mentioned breaking that clip requires about $2000 to replace the entire headlamp assembly. There are 4 reasons that bulb can fail. The filament is just one of them. It was a circuit board module last time. Today it as $345 for a new HID bulb. Good luck!

      Yesterday I took my 09 Cx-9 Sport to the closest Mazda dealership (an hour away) to have the airbag recall replacement done, and asked them to quote me a price to replace the HID bulb on the driver's side that went out. They quoted me $700 for the bulb and with labor, the total quote was $1,347. The guy told me to find the bulb on Amazon and he'd install it for $300. After seeing this video I'll try replacing it myself first.

      @@christinalouise2785 just don’t break anything. Search for a RUclips video that matches your vehicle. If on right side it is super easy to remove the plastic fluid reservoir blocking acces (four short bolts). Don’t touch the bulb glass. Good luck!

    Thank you for the video. I think it will be very helpful for me. On my CX9 I noticed condensation and thereafter the HID died out. In my case I believe I would need to find where the potential break in the seal is and then replace the hid lamp and ballast. Correct?

  • @Mr.Steve-O
    @Mr.Steve-O Месяц назад

    Great video, are there specific instructions on how to handle the HID bulb itself? The manual says you can get an electric shock if not handled correctly. Suppose it's true and also another way to get you to pay $200 for a newly installed bulb. What did you do to avoid getting shocked? Maybe the latex gloves is all that's needed, thx

    • @AdamsLab
      @AdamsLab  Месяц назад +1

      I wouldn’t do it with the car on. Other than that I think the risk is pretty low. You do want to wear gloves to keep skin oil off the bulb as that could damage it.

    • @Mr.Steve-O
      @Mr.Steve-O Месяц назад

      @@AdamsLab Yeah, definitely won't be doing this with the car on 😆 Btw, do you recall the brand of bulb you bought ? Prices seem to be all over the board online, thx

    We have a 2010 Cx-9 touring and there's no clip. I had to turn the wired piece to remove and replace bulb.

    • @warrenwoodbury3402
      @warrenwoodbury3402 6 лет назад +2

      The clips are only on the CX-9s with HID xenon bulbs. If your bulbs twist out they are probably halogen, like the high beams. The HID bulbs may only be standard on Grand Touring models.

    I tried this on my Mazda CX-9 2008 and the little wire ear clips broke the plastic that holds them in. We were able to get the headlight out, but squeezing the ear clips together appears to have broken the plastic and now we can’t see a way to get it to close again. The light just hangs out of the back. Is there any way to replace this part affordably or fix it? Thank you very much

    • @AdamsLab
      @AdamsLab  6 лет назад

      Hum, that sucks... Not sure but I'd guess you'd have to replace the whole light "enclosure" to fix it. Maybe there is a way to cobble it together but without looking at it, hard to say.

      @@AdamsLab My only thought would be to use a thin wire to tie them partially together to simulate the close position, then silicone them into the old position.

    • @AdamsLab
      @AdamsLab  5 лет назад

      Wish I could help, we don't have the car anymore. But if I recall correctly, to replace the high beam requires changing the whole headlight assembly. I may be wrong on that though. I'd check with a dealer or auto parts store.
