      I am in Canada and heard that if it has a hollow stem it is not the giant hogweed....true or false?

    This is great. To find the right plant parts and how to cook it. I am now more confident in finding the right hogweed plants, rather than poison myself. 😂 I only just started foraging the wild food last month after watching your videos. I live in my area for more than 10 years but never really pay any attention to my surroundings. I now found a treasure sanctuary - a waste land around 50 yards away from where I live and it is full of treasures - packed with elder flowers, blackberries, horse chestnuts, full of yarrows, mugworts, nettles, dog roses, hogweeds. dead nettles and many other trees and plants I still don’t know what they are yet… 😂 really fun. When the weather is nice, it is my romance ‘date’ day with my little waste land. 😂 city life is no longer an attraction to me. Thank you for all your videos. ❤

    Great Video!
    Ive seen giant hogweed by the roadside before and there's not a chance you could mistake a fully grown plant for anything else but I'm still cautious when I find any young hogweed so I tend to go for plants that are a little more established , just to be safe

      Yes good idea. Not a mistake you want to make 👍

    There is a lot of hogweed on a walk I haven't been on for a while due to the levels of mud. Will go there tomorrow and pick some shoots as the ground is now solidifying nicely and walking is no longer perilous. Thanks for showing how to cook the shoots. I'm working through your videos readying myself for spring- very informative.

    Thankyou for showing us. I am very afraid I might pick a small Giant Hogweed by mistake. I really do not want to accidently touch one as I have seen the very severe, painful & harmful burns they can cause. Some people suffer from them for years.

    I have bought some organic Common Hogweed seeds and will grow a few in my garden. Is that a good idea?

      @UKWILDCRAFTS  Год назад

      Yeah I don’t see why not. As long as they are definitely not giant hogweed, but I doubt anywhere would be selling those haha

      Can’t say I have specifically seen anyone be healed no, but herbal medicine isn’t really my thing. I’m interested in it but it’s not something I know loads about

      Thanks 😊. Definitely the Collins gem food for free, it’s a good little pocket book. Hedgerow by John wright in the river cottage series is a very good starting point. Anything by John wright or Richard Mabey 👍

    Thanks! I'm new to foraging hogweed, is there any telltale signs to distinguish it from other poisonous umbillifers? I'm trying to get familiar with the whole family before I eat any :)

    • @UKWILDCRAFTS
      @UKWILDCRAFTS  4 года назад +1

      The downy fur stem and leaves of common hogweed is an important indicator. And red specking is not a good sign in this family. Also common hogweed has the ridge running down it's leaf stems in the same way cow Parsley does

      Hemlock is one to be aware of in the umbilifer family. Here's a video I did on it

    Hi there, really enjoying your videos - I live in London and have been picking nettles for a few years now, but have just moved to a flat next to one of the most important and biggest parks in London (a SSSI) and wanted to learn more about foraging.I have been looking for hogweed here and found not much but I am convinced what I found was definitely hogweed after watching these videos a lot (haven't cooked it yet but looking forward to trying). What is most common here is brambles, nettles and cow's parsley. I saw your recent video on foraging in spring but tried eating a very young bramble shoot and it was so disgusting I was sick! Is there a way of cooking them to make them edible and worth eating? I have found some common hogweed but very difficult to find which is surprising for a park of this size - could that be because such a special park in such a special part of London, the most valuable plants get foraged too much? Are dead nettles and cows parsley edible and worth foraging? There are loads of them here. Thanks for the great videos!

    • @UKWILDCRAFTS
      @UKWILDCRAFTS  4 года назад

      Hi first thing is the park definitely SSSI? If so it's probably not permitted to forage there

    • @UKWILDCRAFTS
      @UKWILDCRAFTS  4 года назад

      Dead nettles are very common this time of year, I often use them for tea or a side of steamed mixed greens. Cow Parsley is also common but be very careful, the Umbellifer family has some very poisonous species. I did a video a few months ago about the differences between hemlock and cow parsley

      Bramble shoots can have quite an overpowering taste when raw, I part steam them then fry in butter to crisp up. But if it made you ill maybe leave that one, you might be allergic or something
