    I love this scene, I wish they'd kept it in the film. I particularly like Ash's line about how the Alien might even be better off with no oxygen around if they vent the ship. Too bad it got cut.

    Most of the deleted scenes for this film add nothing, but this one adds to many of the characters and should have been retained in the final film.

  • @Lethgar_Smith

    The dialogue in this scene has a very loose kind of improvisational feel to it. Like they have a solid out line of who is going to say what when, and they're being allowed to just improvise the words.
    I remember reading an article way back in the day when this movie was still in production, or just about to be released (Starlog, I think it was) and there was talk about how the actors were coming up with dialogue on their own because the script was so atrocious or lacking in any depth or personality for the characters. Parker's comment about finishing his coffee because it's the only thing good on the ship is a perfect example of the actors writing a lot of their own dialog. In fact I think most of their banter in scenes involving most of the cast were largely improvised and then rehearsed into a finished scene.
    This scene actually feels like a rehearsal of improvised dialogue.

    • @Lethgar_Smith
      @Lethgar_Smith 3 года назад +2

      Dan O'Bannon can write a story but writing naturally sounding dialogue for a screen play is an art. His characters were written very stiff and by the book with no personality like Dave Bowman and Frank Pool of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Ronald Schusett was brought in to spice it up a little but was inexperienced and didnt really understand O'Bannon's vision for the film. Ridley Scott thought they were both idiots and knew the dialogue was shit and that's why he allowed his actors to take such liberties. Even going so far as improvising entire scenes of dialogue.

  • @tarantulagirl

    I don’t know how Dallas has got the audacity to criticise Parker and Brett after he pulled rank on Ripley and contaminated the ship. He risked all seven lives to save one. That has to be the least captainy decision, ever! Ripley, Parker, Brett and Jonesy should have taken the shuttle immediately and let Dallas, Lambert and Ash live with their decision to let the alien on board.
    They treated Parker and Brett like they were beneath them, but when push came to shove, they were the most sensible. Parker was strong-minded, tough, decent, protected his colleagues when in danger, he saved Ripley from Ash and was man enough to admit he was scared. He was the best crew member and deserved a lot more respect than he got. Team Parker all the way for me.

    I just got very lucky a couple of days ago, I checked out a local bookstore and happened upon Alan Dean Foster's novelization of 'Alien'. I must say, when comparing the book to movie, I think Foster may have been working with earlier drafts which accounts for dialogue said by other characters in addition to the issue of dialogue there's a lot of it that is too much and action sequences that are curiously absent from the movie. Interesting to read but the movie version is preferable.

    I know this comment is old, but there was an unfilmed scene in which the xenomorph was injured by the air lock door closing, causing it to start bleeding on the ship, which begins loosing pressure somewhat.

  • @RaikenXion
    @RaikenXion 11 лет назад +2

    I think Ridley was concerned that it just diluted the whole film dwn abit too much, that he wanted to keep a steady pace with the tension and suspense.

  • @RaikenXion
    @RaikenXion 11 лет назад +1

    In-terms of this scene just more that we can get an Idea of what the characters more or less plan to do about the situation in just shorter more tighter scene. I mean we have to remember this was actually intended as just a B-movie creature feature, so the tactics implied would have to set up the flow of the movie to rely alot on the characters. We all know it was essentially a guy in a suit, he didnt do alot, but the make-up design of that creature spoke for its self, and the way it was shot.

    Of the deleted scenes this one was clearly one that was the least needed. It treat the audience like idiots and explains what they are up to next. Then again today we have some movies in which some annoying sidekick explains everything to the audience who clearly can't draw their own conclusions today.

  • @RaikenXion
    @RaikenXion 11 лет назад +1

    I guess what Im saying then is really, yes I think it was more about talking bout it. You want to see the creature, and what exactly it will do, but for the most part, you're really following these characters, you do care about all of them, becus they do play it so real, they do feel like just average workers that have been doing a job, coming to the end of their (years long) shift and just want to get home. They carry the whole movie, not so much the Alien, even tho Alien in question is main.

    i like this scene.. it kind of implies that this is where ripley gets the idea to blow it out the airlock to save her life at the end

    • @tarantulagirl
      @tarantulagirl 3 года назад +2

      Ridley Scott also cut the other airlock scene where Parker goes to refuel the flamethrowers and he spots the alien loitering in the airlock (You probably know of this, but just in case.) On his way back he spots the alien loitering in the airlock room, it’s fascinated by a green flashing light, Parker whispers to Ripley and Lambert through the speaker system to lock it in and blow it into space. Ash who is listening in on this plan sabotages the plan by raising the klaxon and scaring the alien out of the airlock room. The alien loses its arm after the door closes on it, but manages to rip itself free and runs towards Parker but not noticing him, it almost knocks Parker out as it barges past him in anger and pain. The airlock opens and depressurises the ship. This scene was right before Ripley goes to check mother for answers and learns of special order 937. She became super suspicious of Ash when he sounded the alarm unnecessarily, this is why she had a nosebleed in that scene, because of the airlock opening and the ship depressurisation.

  • @williamhatcher4795

    Is it known why this was cut? It's a great scene. Were there no tight shots of the scene? There are problems with this if it's the only angle because Lambert is mostly not visible and it's a very long take without cuts compared to the rest of the movie.

      Old post, but that is exactly what happened. Foster was hired and they gave him the initial shooting script - which is why there were scenes in the book that never made it to the movie, or were even filmed (such as the alien eating and trashing their food supply). They updated the shooting script after Foster got to work on it and he had already been about half way through. Rather than rewriting the whole thing, they let him continue on.
      It was a surprisingly well written book for a novelization of a movie. That being said, I'm biased. I've enjoyed Alan Dean Foster's work since I was a kid.
