    Hello, punk rocker here. I found a huge issue when getting guitar straps and putting them on. No matter how I do it it won't reach my ankles.

      That is totally the problem that all guitar players face today. You want it to just touch the tops of your tenny shoes.

      @@jeffbeck6501 easy, move the shoes up instead of the guitar down

      I've got a great solution for this. Simply take off your shoes, place them on the ground where you will be playing, and then kneel into them. Your knees should be sitting in the foot holes of the shoe. This allows a player to use any standard guitar strap to get that ankle-biting punk rock look without permanent modification to the human body. Cheers!

  • @DonCrowder
    @DonCrowder 5 лет назад +14

    It's a good idea to use a strap even when you're just sitting and practicing because the need to support the neck with your fretting hand adds extra stress to your hand and arm and can contribute to repetitive stress injuries.

  • @patrickniedermeyer2112
    @patrickniedermeyer2112 4 года назад +15

    Using the shoe string around the headstock is a tried and true method for vintage acoustics, as it relives the stress put on the neck joint from the weight of your hand and arm, which stabilizes the geometry and goes a long way to keep the guitar in tune. I got this tip from Tyler Grant (Nat'l Flatpicking Champ) who heard it from Billy Nershi (String Cheese Incident).

    I've been playing guitar for nearly 23 years, and I just watched a video on how to put on a strap thinking I'd learn something new. Nope.
    I will tell you this, though. When you put on your guitar, make sure neither end of the strap is folded over the strap button. I broke my oldest guitar when the strapped slipped off this way. She still plays, but lost her tone due to a quarter of the top plate coming unglued from the bracing when she crashed into the concrete.

  • @adamsmith13real

    I recently rebuilt a guitar. It had a colossal hole drilled on the bottom, almost a cm in diameter. To fit in my regular screw with the strap button I bought, I hammered down some aluminum foil into a cylinder shape, drilled the screw into that with a shitton of superglue, then added glue to the exterior of the foil and then plugged it right in (with the strap button put over the screw). Works like a charm.

  • @anthonynonya

    When I first started playing I bought an Epi LP Special/amp kit at GC and the strap always fell off. Being a mechanic I took off the button and screwed the strap directly to the guitar with a felt washer against the body and two fender washers. Never looked back, still there since around '04 if I remember correctly.
    And I just realized the irony of using "fender" washers on an Epiphone..... haha

  • @musicbymark
    @musicbymark 5 лет назад +12

    Nice video. Surprised you didn't express preference for mounting button on bottom side of neck - seems so ideal - out of the way, perfect angle, inconspicuous, less likely to get bumped off. Do you use different strap locks for acoustic than electric? I agree, I love how they work. I think many would benefit from another, more advanced video showing how to MOVE an acoustic pickup jack from the endpin location to a reinforced, lower location so the strap's turning doesn't twist the jack loose.

  • @candykanefpv

    2:50 that'll fall off. I know that from experience. If it's cupped the other way, it'll stay on. Fender makes a different type that is much more secure.

    1:28 DON'T! Strapbuttons do NOT go in the heel cap. Dan would never do that.
    The guitar will lean forward, all the weight of the guitar rests on the button when it's in the case and the heel can split. Practice what you preach. It's in your trade secrets too.

    Call me paranoid, but when I install locks on the strap, I make sure the U is facing up. That way, if the pin fails, the guitar won't necessarily fall. Bonus - if you equip all your guitars with the same type of lock, you need fewer straps!

    tie a square knot and it will never slip. right over left, under and through, then left over right, under and through, pull snug. if it is tied correctly the knot will look like two interlocking loops if you push the ends toward the center loosening the knot.

    Does Stewmac's customer base really need this level of concise guidance to install strap buttons? My gut feeling is that Stewmac wants to appeal to people new to guitar modification and learners. Perhaps this is better as a narrative "Guitar Straps 101" instead of being a "how to..." Just a thought. Was still interesting tho!

    I appreciate what I think the intent is here, so I didn't click thumbs down. Having said that, the directions for mounting the upper button on an acoustic made me cringe. Mounting on the end grain of the bottom of the neck heel, or even worse, into the back or side wood with no support from the neck, is a recipe for disaster. I'm REALLY surprised to see this advice from StewMac.

    • @travishemming3783
      @travishemming3783 5 лет назад

      Yeah, I know they wanted to make this video concise, but that part needed more information. Directly behind the heel cap would be into the neck block or tenon/dovetail and probably pretty stable, but they should have emphasized that it should be very close because that stuff usually doesn't extend very far inward. I agree about the end grain in any case, just to be safe, and much prefer a locking strap somewhere in the side of the heel.

    2:50 - what the hell have you done? In schaller style straplocks like those the part that attaches to the strap should be the other way around! The weight of the guitar should be pushing the button into that U shape, not pulling it out!
    It never ceases to amaze me when a supposedly reputable source allows a blunder like that to pass in their tutorial. And then does nothing to rectify it.
    In the orientation you have shown the only thing that actually holds the strap is the spring loaded pin. That pin is only supposed to keep the strap in place when there is no pull on it, i.e. you are not wearing the guitar. Nothing more. As soon as the force pulling on the strap is high enough to overcome the spring preload (e.g. when jumping on stage) that pin will let go. Bye bye guitar, hello broken headstock and other expensive repairs. In a proper orientation all the weight is held by that U-shaped body of the strap attachment, not the pin. You can pull on the strap all you want and you'd rather strip the screw holding the button than cause that straplock to let go.

    The best height for an electric guitar is where it acts as an extension of the penis. If you go too high, it's like having a tiny peter that doesn't even hang, just pointing out at the wide world like a little mole. If you go too low, however, it's like having erectile dysfunction. The ideal height is maximum penis.
