As someone that made a bunch of 3d MTG cards, this is very interesting. I'm very jealous of your laser cut top-deck plastic and your aligning tool. Doing it by hand is much more work, hahaha
    Amazing job!
I understand the appeal of these made in a quicker way, so I'll refrain from "things that require too much detail", but here are some suggestions:
    1) cover the outsides so you don't see the layers. In your case, since you are using foam to bulk them (very clever, btw), I'm not sure what paint would be best. Probably something like acrylic, since it can go on thicker.
    2) when you have dark images, you can run a fine-liner ink pen on the edges you just cut to paint it black. It helps with masking the cut edges and imperfections
    3) As you probably won't have time to cover-paint the backgrounds, one other thing you can do is cut away "repeated" layer images. For example, in the Haunter card, his left hand in the foreground. If, in the layer below it (the one with the main body) you cut away the art of the left hand, when you place the top layer (the one with only the left hand) it will look even more 3D and it won't have the repeating misaligned art right below it. You could do something similar for the Charmander's tail and body.
Overall, this was and absolute success! Fantastic work!
I love your use of foam to bulk the cards and the fact that you protected the cards with a plastic top deck layer. I started doing it for my counters and it makes it so much easier to manipulate the cards without worry.

I've seen a fair amount of 3D-ified Magic cards, so it was super cool to see Jazza figure out his own method for creating them. I agree with your suggestions!

Having made 3D card projects for years I agree with most of these. I myself and quite a few fellow artists use Gundam markers beside acrylic paint. They are wipeable for a short period but don't bleed into the cardboard.
Making your edges at least black has proven to be the best investment of time vs results improvement to our experience as it also hides cut fraying and small errors. There are more advanced ways to make projects look Way better, but they probably don't suit this 'mass production' project.

Hey Jazza really hope you see this. A couple of tips I’ve seen that improves the quality of 3d cards is to run a black marker around the white edge of your cuts and to use those weird metal clay tools to make your pieces 3D by making them curved or folded. Like if you put the energy ball into a curved object and applied pressure it would create almost a semi spherical shape. Cheers love ya work

    • @eyalm867
      @eyalm867 2 года назад +25

On the thing with the energy ball, I'd also say attempt to cut out the symbol, and have that as a separate layer... that might make it more 3d...?!?!

    • @ConnorSinclairCavin
      @ConnorSinclairCavin 2 года назад +30

Even better than a black marker try a metallic silver or metallic white paint, it tends to make the edges fade into the art, or a milky semi clear with suspended holographics

I think that for the energies you could use cabochons, those glass fish-eye thingies with a flat back. It would make them look more 3d and shiny with less cutting up and layering. Also to make everything more professional you could paint the sides of the cut outs black, and maybe paint over the area where the foreground objects will be placed on the backround layers, to enhance the 3d effect. I'm looking foward to see the whole deck!!

The only thing I can think off to improve them even further is to clean up the edges. You can now rather clearly see that it's multiple layers of card/foam stuck together if you look at the side edge of the card. Somehow covering that up with tape or paint or something would go a long way to making it look even more "real" and less "cards stuck together".

Trying to side shuffle these would be impossible, so likely a good messy pile might be a good method for it, I think it is called a table shuffle.....

you could never make them regulation the whole reason cards work is because they all weigh the same amount with an extremely small variance for holographic ink. Even if you made them look identical in thickness the number of cards used for each 3d effect would vastly change the weight of each card, and even the amount of card preserved from each layer could contribute to the weight.

obviously there's no way to make the tournament legal, but I don't even think you could make them standardized enough to be playable in any honest capacity.
Obviously you could still play with them just for the laughs, but not in any serious way.
Based on the thickness of just 3 cards you can immediately tell that it would be completely impossible to even play with them as to stack 60 would end up in a deck size that would be entirely impossible to even begin shuffling. Even double card thickness becomes very hard to work with.
These cards look great but that's pretty much the limit of their value. Aside from maybe using a regular deck and then replacing the cards on the field as you play them.

A single, unaltered card weighs 1.67 - 1.76 grams, one of those stacked 3D cards probably weighs at most 10 grams. If you could, by hand, tell the difference between 8 grams (maybe the power card) and 10 grams (the least cut up 3D card perhaps) I'd be very impressed.

so many things about this could be improved in obvious ways that were driving me nuts:
    1. painting/sharpie-ing over the parts of the pokemon that would be visible in the background lair in black
    2. coloring the edges of the pieces that have been cut black/the color of the pieces so they stand out a lot less than bright white
    3. curling the edges of rounded parts slightly to lean morre into them being 3d
    4. (this is the biggest one) layering parts of the pokemon on top of each other for depth. charmander's arm and haunter's back spikes/inner mouth were the biggest examples of this, butterfree i get you didn't have the materials for the wings
definitely going to look into using foam and cutting thicker plastic car holders though. those are good ideas.

Finally something I might be able to help with. You can gently curve and mould the card to get rid of the awkward flatness and cutting edges. You can also use silicon glue to get a beautiful transition between layers instead of the stepped look. Just the first one really elevates simple decoupage really easily. I hope this helps someone!

The easiest way to speed up the process is to digitize the whole deck & use your laser cutter to make all the layers. Then your job is simply to assemble the cards. It shouldn't take much time after you have ever cut designed.

These cards look amazing. I really love em. I think the only thing that you could do to improve them a little bit, is if the foam you use for padding the cards out was colored the same as the cards interior, so that even when looking at an angle, it would look like a lot more cards stacked together instead of different material.

Make sure you are spending as much time as you can helping others and spreading the Gospel of Jesus while you are here so that you are ready to confront Jesus at the Bemaseat. it would take some setting up to make it happen, but I bet you could cut the artwork super cleanly and quickly with the laser cutter if you could line them up well enough. If the card can slot perfectly into the gap in the other cardboard that would be a great way to know exactly where the card will be on the laser cutter bed!

As someone who's grown up with pokemon this is simply amazing to see! I love the idea of a whole deck to play with! I think one suggestion I would make is to paint the outside edges of the cards to hide the white of the spacing material. Also if you use a specific deck, you should use the Ancient Origin- Iron Tides deck! It's main pokemon is Metagross (the pokemon in my profile picture) it's a really cool, really powerful pokemon! It also happens to be my favorite pokemon 😁

This is so cool! I wonder if you could take a scan of the card and then map out each of the "layers" on phototshop or something. Throw those into your laser cutter and have the LASER CUTTER do all of the cutouts for you?? SUPER crispy lines AND the only bit you have to do manually from there would be to assemble.
It would also give you a way to dynamically preview each card to make sure you get the exact affect you're wanting ahead of doing anything to the physical card. I would LOVE a part 2 of this where you did more of the tech-y integration in the process. So cool!!

A way to shuffle these is a must! Assuming they are strong enough, I'm imagining a massive Plinko style machine. 🤣😂
    Good luck with that one.
Ideas to make it cheaper & sturdier:
If you use layers of foam under each image in the same shape, then you may only need to use one or two cards instead of five. This way you don't have to spend as much $$ and it gives you a wider variety to choose from.
Each foam backer would need to be the same depth as the layer of the image. So it would be: 1) Background 2) Layer of foam and image. 3) Two layers of foam and image. 4) Three layers of foam and image. Etcetera for however many layers you choose.
Alternatively, cardboard or thin wood might also work.
The full image backing should also make the cards sturdier, as would an exterior casing for each card.
Setting a layer baseline for the cards will help keep them close to the same thickness.
Using layers of resin or acrylic sheets could also be used, but this might get expensive, messy, take longer and or be harder to keep even.

someone else on insta was doing this type of 3d thing too, but what they don't do is add the extra white layers, and every little thing that's already in the pokemon's card bg have it separate it and glue it again layer by layer, like this one in the vid but thinner and still has a pretty 3d look

you've definitely taken this to a whole other level. looks amazing! maybe the next step would be to painting around the edge of each cutout piece, either to the colour of the area itself or black.
One thing I see some people do is they slightly round the pokemon/object inwards, that way you can't see the rough cutout as much but it just gives an even more 3d effect.
Using a cutout of the protectors was such a brilliant idea
