  • The binturong is hard to describe. It is sometimes called a "bearcat," but it isn't closely related to bears or cats. And it smells like popcorn, but the source of that smell is not good eats.

Binturongs have always been my favorite animal, I saw one on an exotic animal segment of a talk show as a kid and thought they were so cool. I got to meet, hold, and feed one at a wildlife conservation center a few years ago. She climbed on my shoulders and wrapped her tail around my neck for security, but was very gentle. Seemed like she would have been content to eat banana chunks out of my hand all day long! She did smell like corn, kind of a musky smell more than an appetizing smell. Definitely a top bucket list item checked off!

The binturong has been one of my favorite animals since childhood. I grew up in San Diego and the first time I saw the binturong exhibit at the zoo I became obsessed. It's a "bizarre" question to answer in an icebreaker group. "What's your favorite animal?" "the binturong"...followed by people's confused faces.

it’s from malay, I’m a malay from Malaysia and we call it multiple names like menturung, menturun, binturung and tenturun which all may have been taken from the word “turun” which means to go down like how the binturong goes climbs down from trees, bear in mind it is formally called “musang binturung” in formal standard malay, musang meaning civet a type of creature often mistaken with foxes here....... thus musang binturung would mean something like “descending foxes”

In Vietnam we had something very much like that, but smaller, gray, and locals called it a "Banana Cat" but it didn't smell like popcorn. It was a mortal pain in the ass, as it would sleep all day and raise hell all night. Every morning, at least one of the guys would threaten to shoot it. Thank you for your information on the binturong.

Too bad I didn't see this 2 years ago. Some years back the two of us went to Minneapolis on a weekend trip, and one thing we did was visit the Minnesota Zoo, and at that time they had a binturong on exhibit. Yes, its enclosure gave off a funky sort-of-buttered-popcorn odor. While I was looking at the animal, some kid ran up to see and his mother grabbed his hand, complained about how bad it stunk (hey, it's a zoo, lady) and dragged her son away. Sigh.
I don't see binturong listed in the zoo's website now, but it's been quite a few years since that day (probably about 10 or so). Still, what an unusual animal to have at a smallish zoo.

Love this! But I have a quick question, a QQ if you will...
Don't possums have prehensile tails as well?
If the answer is no, then I'm going to need another BizzareBeasts episode explaining the definition of prehensile tail.

This just sounds like a pokemon.
Popcorn smell and likes fruit, make it grass type. Cute looking, unfamiliar but also familiar (think eevee), so easy design to throw there.

The binturong definitely just looks like someone painted a red panda black, and gave it a seal face. The Kinkajou, on the other hand, is clearly just a chihuahua that got stretched out and grew super buff.

While I do agree that reducing maternal mortality is very important, wouldn't it be more fitting to donate the profits to an organisation that prevents rare and endangered "bizzare beasts" from going extinct?

Hank and John made a plea to collect some big amount of money for Partners in Health, and only after that the Bizzare Beast pinclub started (originally on Vlogbrothers chanel), so they just linked it with the biggest cause they support.

@MsBlulucky why don’t you make a video for Project 4 Awesome on behalf of an organization that saves rare and/or bizarre endangered creatures? That would be most fitting.

Ok, I have just spent 20 minutes trying to figure out the etymology of this thing. Here's where I'm at:
Turns out, there are several different names for it in Malay as well. One of them is
    'musang turun',
    which breaks down into
'civet' + 'climbing/going up'. So, a climbing civet.
The part that means 'climbing/going up' is 'turun' and it turns up again in the alternate name:
'tenturun' , which isn't that far away from 'binturung'
So what we know is that the name has something to with climbing, but as for the other part of the word, be that a root or a prefix, I have no idea what it means.
If you know, please let me know.

I remember seeing this animal for the first time on the show Going Wild With Jeff Corwin on the Disney Channel. (Back when Disney was awesome.) Anyway, I had the pleasure to see this amazing animal in the small Ararat Zoo at the Ark Encounter.

Visiting the enclosure of Binturons in Pairi Daiza in Belgium, the whiff of popcorn was overwhelming. At the time, we just thought some of the other visitors ate popcorn qroumd this enclosure 😐

Has anyone investigated if red pandas are closely related to binturong? There's a lot of morphological similarities, and even a bit of geographical and diet crossover too.
