Hi, I'm John, and I've been passionate about #history since I could remember. I majored in history and historical research and trained for a year under an actual historian. Ultimately, I am a History Buff like many of us. Let's #react and discuss things we know and so much we don't know about history!

Rik Mayall as Flashheart was the perfect casting for that character. Just takes over the screen and has some brilliant lines 😂😂
Rick steals every scene, massive loss RIP
Rik Mayall was one of the funniest people ever! He could make anything funny!😂😂😂
Yes. It was Rik Mayall, formerly of the Young Ones
You just have to watch the episode in the 4th series when Flashheart’s descendent turns up. Absolutely hilarious and steals the show.
That could have been a nice surprise for him.
Slackbladder might not agree....
Alongside his regular costar Adrian Edmondson.
I love how you apologized for saying British humour is condescending unaware that you were about to watch a scene where the comedy is all Blackadder being massively condescending to people a second later. Forgiven... and vindicated! :)
Thank you!
Two silly bulls?
@@Sub2GigaChad I remember a fatted calf
Apologised
@@drdassler screw tradition, mix up the best of both. "Apologized" is clearly better. Reads better, and looks more like it sounds.
Just to give you a fun heads-up movie fact.
That Baby-Eating Bishop of Bath and Wells is none other than the fine British actor Ronald Lacey, famous for playing the Nazi agent Arnold Toht in Raiders of the Lost Ark who has the talisman imprint burned into his hand and his face melts when the arc is opened
Lacey also has an uncredited role in Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade; he played Heinrich Himmler, along side Micheal (Mr Bronson in BBCs Grange Hill) Sheard who played Hitler.
Tony Robinson is now Sir Tony Robinson!!
knighted by the Queen or did he get Charles?
@@HumorAndHistory Her Most Britannic Majesty, Elizabeth the Second, Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of Her Realms and Territories across the seas, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith, knighted him.
The story behind flashhearts scene was that during the rehearsal Rick Mayal read the lines in a very understated way. Then during the actual filming Rick went all in and stunned the rest of the cast. You can see them all staring at him in absolute amazement, and that was the genuine reaction of the actors.
The wonderful Rik Mayall as Flash .. sadly missed
Blackadder is fabulous. As a former environmental archaeologist, you may find a long running TV series Tony (Baldrick) Robinson hosted called Time Team, which featured archaeology. Each week was a new dig. Although not 100% true to archaeology, it gave a great introduction to the subject for many.
Loved Time Team , it introduced so many to archaeology .
Blackadder is a MASTER of condecension don't worry, it's part of British humour - the creative, snotty insult.
The guy playing the bishop of Bath & Wells is Ronald Lacey. He was Herr Toht from Raiders.
Lacey also has an uncredited role in Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade; he played Heinrich Himmler, along side Micheal (Mr Bronson in BBCs Grange Hill) Sheard who played Hitler.
The 3rd episode you showed was the 2nd most blackadder episode I remember.
"The baby eating bishops of bath and wells" shows how burnt in to my memory. So funny.
The only one more significant is the tragedy of going over the top in finale great war series.
Because of blood loss from absolutely incompetent generalship. And the tragedy of combat, and life lost. That one makes me cry every time.
Glad you enjoyed this , it's a farce based on well researched history . Rowan Atkinsons sarcasm throughout the ages makes it . A cast that features the best of British comedy , Miranda Richardson plays a wonderful semi psychotic Elizabeth I. The third series features Hugh Lawrie as the Prince Regent . Tony Robinson played Baldrick in all of them , in the first series he was the clever one but the role reversal to stupid servant worked much better from this series onwards . After this he presented Time Team which brought serious archaeology to tv .
it is brilliant and well executed. As you say, the history aspect seems quite period!
Tony Robinson actually does a serious archeology TV show called "Time Team"...
Thats Rik Mayall as lord flash heart
Mary QoS was Elizabeth's cousin and was beheaded for conspiring with people wanting to replace the latter with the former. Mary Tudor was her half-sister and died of illness. The show cocked up there.
Seeing has almost the entire cast and the shows writers all went to Cambridge it should be obvious that they did the piece in fun unless like the “ Crown” you think it’s “ real history”.
Richard Curtis and Ben Elton wrote Blackadder. Two very good comedic writers
You probably don't recognise the bishop, his name is Ronald Lacey, most famous for being the Gestapo agent in Raiders of the Lost Arc. Also, Tony Robinson has, for years introduced Time Team, a programme that conducts archaeological digs on any historical site from any period.
I didn't notice Ronald, thank you!
It should be noted, Tony Robinson, the downtrodden peasant oik, was knighted for his contribution to historical education.... predominantly for Time Team, but also for his "History Walks". Which in a way was launched at about the time he was in Blackadder, he also did biblical storytelling called Blood and Honey.. wandering around ancient ruins retelling stories with limited props or any cast.
He’s also been knighted.
Lacey also has an uncredited role in Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade; he played Heinrich Himmler, along side Micheal (Mr Bronson in BBCs Grange Hill) Sheard who played Hitler.
growing up during the 70's and 80's in Scotland, Rowan Atkinson first came into prominance in the tv sketch show "not the nine o'clock news". Then he became Blackadder
He was almost The Black Vegetable, until Baldrick suggested The Black Adder
Yes nearly every episode is this brilliant. The entire cast of each of the 4 seasons are incredible. One of the greatest comedy ensembles in tv history
Interesting little tidbit, most Americans think of Mr. Bean for Rowan Atkinson, and think he drives a Mini, so must be about 5'4"-5'6", but surprisingly is 6'... Hugh Laurie is 6'2½", Stephen Fry is 6'4½", Tim McInerney is also 6'... Tony Robinson is actually 5'6".
❤ Love it! An American who can laugh out loud without a cue card 😂
Love Baldric as a character, Tony Robinson does deliberate misinterpretation so well
Glad you find Blackadder funny Rowan Atkinsons wit is sharp and sarcastic. Lord Flash heart was Rik Mayall and yes he was in the young ones, bottom, filthy, Rich and catflap among others and has passed away. 👍
"The Baby Eating Bishop of Bath & Wells!".... classic! I live just south of Wells, England's tiniest city.
Tony Robinson also did Maid Marian and her Merry Men, a parody of Robin Hood for childrens TV
Interestingly, in the 16th Century, daggers like the one carried by most men (see Flasheart's) were particularly popular and referred to as 'Bollock daggers' (the hand guard initially just looked like a pair of testes - but some apparently did become increasingly phallic - I know one re-enactor that took it even further and made one with a pearl on the hilt!)
You really have to watch the entire episodes to get the dynamic of the characters and the story.
Mayal's partner in Young Ones, Adrienne Edmundson, plays the German.
You gotta watch them all. Solid writing all the way.
You really need to see the whole series of Blackadder! They are all great. Season 2, 3 and 4 are of course the best!
Watch the series 2, 3 and goes forth, they are some of the best British comedy and are fantastically written.
In the UK famous people are sometimes given blue plaques commemorating them, Rik Mayall's states, Rik Mayal 1958-2014, Punched his friend in the balls on a bench near this spot.
Rik Mayall kind of reprised that character (a Napoleonic war version of him at least) for series of ads for British beer Bombardier, look it up!
As previously mentioned Tony Robinson, now Sir Tony Robinson was knighted for his contribution to archaeology after many years of hosting "Time Team".
As a historian you may find it fascinating if you could watch some episodes. He has exactly the same voice as Baldrick but minus the thick headed stupidity.
RIK MAYAL (YOUNG ONES, BOTTOM)IS LORD FLASHHEART AND HILARIOUS IN THIS EPISODE AND IN SEASON 4 HE SHOWS UP AGAIN.👍👍😍
If you do decide to do the full series, you'll hear a lot of people telling you to skip the first series. Please ignore this. Sure it's not quite as amazing as the other three series but it's still good, it's just set up a bit differently and has a different feel.
I agree 100%. It is worth it for Brian Blessed alone. And the episode with the Infanta is hilarious.
I agree, I quite liked 'The Blackadder' but has a roaringly good turn from Brian Blessed (who to be honest is just being Brian Blessed!)
I'd then suggest watching it last... It was the first I tried watching of Blackadder and it made me not even want to watch the rest, let alone any other seasons. It wasn't until a British friend assured me, that the other seasons were different, that I agreed to watch those with him.
Even after watching the remaining seasons... I couldn't watch season 1.
Mary Queen of Scots was Elizabeth I's cousin-once-removed, not her sister. Her (half) sister was Mary Tudor, aka Bloody Mary.
In a letter to Elizabeth I, Mary Queen of Scots signs herself as "Your richt [right] gud sister and cusignes [cousin] Marie R."
Monarchs frequently referred to each other as 'brother' or 'sister' monarchs.
And you were right about Flash. Its Rik Mayall from The Young Ones, Bottom, etc. We lost a good one there, RIP.
Yeah, the cast is great and the late Rik Mayall doing Rik Mayall's stuff is superb!
Blackmailing the Bishop was from the episode The Bishop of Bath and Wells my absolute favourite of all the series .
How can you Americans not recognise Rik Mayall!
He was Vyvyan.
He was Cat flap.
He was Drop dead Fred!
He was one half of Bottom!
I did recognize him.
@@HumorAndHistory I forgot his brief stint as the storyteller.
American here. He was not Vyvyan. He was Rick. Except on the quiz show when he was Prick
@@LB-gz3ke Meh. Close enough.
Same show.
An American who actually pays attention. You're like a unicorn. Rare.
Rick Mayall passed away some years back and yes he was in that series, the young ones. I think some time after this series he had a very bad car accident, not sure if it was touch & go for a while there, but he appeared to recover on the face of it but yet a feast years after he passed away. My memory not great the last few days...
Gabrielle Glaister who plays Blackadder's fiancée turns up as Bob (in men's clothes) in Blackadder Goes Forth.
Such a shame you can't do the full episodes 😔 you really do need the full thing to get all the jokes as they run throughout the plot. Even if we don't get to watch you react to them I hope you watch even if it's in your free time. Thanks for reacting 👍
Yes, like all the best comedies watching clips means that you often miss the multiple linkages which form the deeper part of the comedic fun and just get the one liners or witicisms, but can't fully understand the overall context of the comedy.
8:00 The Black Bishop is played by Ronald Lacey (Toht from Raiders of the Lost Ark).
I may be wrong. But I believe the Bishop they blackmail was Tote; the creepy Gestapo man from Raiders of the Lost Ark.
100%
I love Blackadder. In America Rowan Atkinson is mostly known for the Mr Bean movies which I have never cared for. So it's very hard to get people here to understand how completely different his character Blackadder is in this series. The episode that ends with Flasheart showing up at the wedding (Bells) is one you need to see from start to finish because it is comedy gold. Another fantastic episode from season 2 is "Potato". In it Blackadder tries to impress the queen by going exploring but ends up hiring a completely insane captain. And the episode where Blackadder gets court marshalled in season 4 may be the funniest 30 minutes of any sitcom ever filmed.
Are you just watching clips cos Edmunds wife was originally known as "Bob", a young boy that he fell in love with but only later discovered "Bob" was a girl. That was the A story and it was very funny.
"Bob"
You definitely don't bore me with your commentary, quite the opposite - your commentary is one big reason I watch your videos for 🙂
Glad to hear it!
Yes. They're ALL that good.
IMHO the Blackadder series were the best comedy on TV. The snippits you just watched were good but they are missing a lot of the context built up earlier in the respective episodes. You clearly loved the writing and the delivery. I know RUclipsrs haven't got time to watch the full episodes of everything that crosses their path, but this is cream of the crop. You'll get to discover why his fiance Bob, I mean Kate, likes boys clothes and whether he gets executed in the last clip amongst many other things. Series 1 is less well written but still good, especially from a historical and Shakespear context. Ben Elton joined the writers from Series 2 onwards.
And yes, that was Rik Mayall from the Young Ones. Sadly missed.
@TheHistoryBuff Flashheart is Rik Mayall, THE GREATEST comedian of all time.
You abolutely have to see "The Bottom" series, it is brilliant. A lot of episodes it is two of them and tiny stage. They make it work great, that is some next level skill. The episode "Carnical" is great example. They paint the whoel scene by words only. And the slapstick they do is also next level. They did live acts of Bottom on theathre stage. Their stage fights look really good, sometimes even too good, with couple accident. The whole production of Rik Mayall is really unique, fresh and inovative. Young ones is great but it get so much bett in "New Statesman", "Young, Snotty and Catflap", And "The Bottom"
There is a documentary of Rik Mayall and there is also documentary about the Young Ones.
yes thy are all like this. You must see Black Adder goes forth. Set during world war I.
Flasheart is Rik Mayall, RIP
SEE BIT BY ATKINSON "TOBY THE DEVIL" TAKING ROLL IN HELL...HILARIOUS!😁😜😊😄😃😜
You need to see the whole episodes!
4 SEASONS OF BLACKADDER----
PRINCE IN MEDIEVAL TIMES SEASON 1
LORD TO ELIZABETH I IN SEASON 2
BUTLER TO PRINCE OF WALES SEASON 3
SERGEANT IN WWI. SEASON 4👍👍👍👍👍👍
You have to watch yes prime minister or yes minister, absolute fantastic writing and still relevant 40 plus years later...
ONE OF BEST BRIT COMEDIES EVER!!!!
Baldric is remarkably free from the ravages of intelligence.
Rik Mayall also played Drop Dead Fred in the early 1990s
Not Flash Gordon but Flashman, as of Tom Brown's School Days
It was the Second season that Ben Elton joined the writing team and the humour really improved
The scene at the end. If only it would show the bit after where Blackadder has to pretend to be Lord Farrow in jail to convince the wife he's still alive! One of the best bits of the entire series (after the Lord Flashheart bit!)
Rik Mayall
The most hilarious of the 4 series in my opinion. Every episode a killer. "Chains" is my favourite Feat. Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry and Ade
Edmonson
How can a historian, even from the New World, not have seen Blackadder? 4x6 = one season for you folks back then!?
Backadder!!! You've got to cover more of this, they go through 4 diff points in history.
The line, "Don't worry about destroying the paintings, because we still have the preliminary sketches", may have slipped by you, in other words (from the days before digital cameras), he has the negatives.
Yes, it was the late Rik Mayall.
I don't know if you know the old Small Faces song Itchycoo Park? When Steve Marriot sang about getting high in the park, the person he was usually getting high with was a young Tony Robinson, as they were in drama school together.
In December, We're doing a stage production of 3 episodes from Blackadder season 2, including the one with Lord Flashheart :) I'm playing Kate/ Bob! XD
There's quite a lot more to this last story... and for my money Mr Bean is by far the poorest quality work Atkinson has ever done.
Would love blackadder do the RF today with the whole Meghan and Harry saga. Has to be Baldrick playing Harry 😂
03:54 "Flash," in UK parlance, means showy, fashionable, and perhaps overconfident, not _Flash Gordon._ Think of the US usage "flashy suit" vs. the UK "Jumping Jack Flash." And 05:02 that's the amazing Rik Mayall, who sadly did pass too young. If you've ever seen *_Drop Dead Fred,_* it hits hard.
Rest in peace Rick
You Found Blackadder !!! Enjoy 😁👍✨ There’s plenty more where this one came from 🤣
That last clip makes no sense on it's own, you would have to see the whole episode. It is worth it.
I presume you have watched every Blackadder since this video. (Blackadder 1 wasn't very good). Two was best and 3, 4 pretty good. Atkinson is one of the finest comedy actors of his generation and the rest of the cast (Robinson, Laurie, Fry and many more + guest appearances like Rik Mayall) just made it magic. It is one of the finest comedy programmes ever made, up there with Fawlty Towers: iconic - literally a laugh every few seconds. Anyone interested in creating a comedy performance in any format should watch and evaluate Blackadder. It is a masterpiece.
Rik Mayall =] he was also in drop dead fred
Ronald Lacey, the baby eating bishop of Bath and Wells, also the cardinal priest in Flesh and Blood.
Black adder 3rd McBeth 😂
Shakespeare, the hot playwright of the era, was not averse to a bit of cross-dressing in his comedies too.
You have to watch the whole eps - only 30 mins
4 series of 6 (plus a few specials)
Lord Flasheart (RIK MAYAL) is in season 2 4
The last one is missing context, but I'm sure you worked it out.
If you like flash watch bottom.
As much as I love this iconic show and would absolutely recommend watching the full episodes, I do recommend at least initially, skipping the first season, as it is vastly different to the rest of the series and is not well regarded, plus you can go back and watch it after.
I loved this show before the 2nd season started. It got better but Don't drink the wine is my favourite line.
Rik was also in bottom
Dude for an almost complete history lesson of Great Britain just watch series 2,3 & 4 of Blackadder
Unfortunately series 1 wasn't quite as good
Also Tony Robinson went on to host "Time Team" a sorta of serious short sharp excavation team, doing archeology on TV
Some clips doesn't really work out of context. You should consider doing full episodes 😊
Black Adder is a British institution
I love Blackadder, it's my favourite comedy of all time; so when I say that the history isn't always correct, it's not me slighting it. You picked up on them saying Mary Queen of Scots was Queenie's sister when in reality she was her cousin for example. I don't actually think these are mistakes so much as the facts being at the mercy of what sounds funnier for the scene.
Also I only learnt recently, despite loving this show for years and years, that the perverted Bishop was played by the same man who was the Gestapo officer in the first Indiana Jones movie!
It could be put down to Nursie being senile and confusing her with Queen Mary who was Elzabeths half sister .
I think monarchs of the period often referred to each other as 'brother' or 'sister' as a matter of courtesy between ontological equals.
Dark denigration....more accurate of British!!😍😍
Just watch full series 2, 3 and 4
Stop wasting your time.
Americans don't understand logic.
Rick Mayall
You seriously need to watch all 6 episodes in full, just taking snippets does not demonstrate the genius behind the UK's second most beloved sitcom, and Blackadder 2 is the best of all of Blackadder's 4 historical escapades. Each episode feels like a movie, and each one has unique lyrics in the end theme tune. The final seconds of Blackadder goes Forth are the most poignant. His rotten bloodline ended in 1917.
BLACKADDER BEGINS AS A PRINCE (SEASON 1)
TO A LORD (SEAON 2)
TO A BUTLER TO PRINCE OF WALES (S3) BEST ONE!!!!👍👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤👍👍👍👍👍
