    The two guys with golden helmets were beta-level psykers ad their golden helmets were psychic hoods. A psychic hood is a device that psykers wear which helps to control and amplify their psychic powers. They were also psychically bonded, so the death of one caused the other to momentarily be disabled.
    The orbs contain something, it's not clear exactly what. It could be warp daemons, xenos gods, warp entities, warp aliens. The orbs are definitely of xenos make.
    As the space marine kill team is approaching the orb, the whispers you hear is whatever is inside trying to mind control them, but it cannot break through the psycho-indoctrination. Failing that, it tries to telekinetically shove them away, but space marines are insanely stron and they can magnetize the boots of their power armor. The devices they shove into the orb are so the inquisitor back on the ship can spy on both orbs psychically easier.
    After the inquisitor psychically spies on the orbs and hears their plans, he turns to the space marine captain and tells him to get them out of there. However that momentary break in his concentration is all the entity in the orb needs and possesses him. When a psyker gets possessed, you have to act fast, a moment's hesitation will lead to disaster. A few of the things that can happen when a psyker gets possessed are: 1)The possessing entity rapidly mutates the psyker's body and then goes on a rampage. 2) The possessing entity causes all sorts of out of control, dangerous and deadly psychic phenomena to manifest. 3)The possessing entity transforms the psyker's body into a warp gate that allows whatever nasties lurking nearby in the warp to pour into realspace.
    When dealing with a possessed psyker, you have 3 options before the entity takes control of their mind and body: A) Shoot until the magazine is empty. B) Shoot until their body is mush. C) Both.
    Whatever was in the orb reveals itself to the space marine kill team and escapes into the warp. It opens up a warp portal and suck them in behind it. I'm not sure if the entity is trying to feed on the space marines or if it's trying to take possession of them by using it's powers unrestrained in the warp, regardless something attacks it, it could be a warp predator, a chaos demon or something else entirely, there's a saying that comes to mind, "When the rabbit screams, the fox comes to investigate. But he does not come to help."
    The kill team sergeant is the first to get flung onto the planet, where he removes his helmet and coughs up blood and laramin cells(special cells created by a gene-seed organ that causes blood to quickly clot and scar tissue to quickly form, it's one of the reasons why space marines are so tough to kill). After a second he's up and ready to get back into it. If you pay close attention, you see at the top of the surrounding plinths flashes of light, that's the rest of his team popping out of the warp. They're all lucky to be alive as the very nature of the warp itself is caustic to flesh and blood beings.
    The planet they're on, it's location is unknown. It could be anywhere in the galaxy. It could be in the warp as entire planets, and sometimes solar systems have been swallowed by the warp. They could have been flung forwards or backward through time, as time does not move in any normal sense in the warp.

    That boarding vessel they use is called a Caestus Assault Ram. It uses twin-linked Magna-Meltas (really, _really_ big microwave guns) to burn a hole into the enemy ship's hull so that it can disgorge its deadly payload of up to ten Space Marines (a full squad). While not as efficient as boarding torpedoes (literally an armored torpedo a Space Marine will get in and just get shot at the enemy ship), and not as safe as a Thunderhawk drop, the Astartes love the Caestus for its surprise factor and will go to great lengths to recover these holy craft.
    Bolters fire .75 caliber self-propelled mass-reactive shells, which explode when surrounded by mass (aka a body). That's why the traitor Guardsmen explode in a red mist when they get hit once :P
    That armour is Mk VII Aquila Power Armour, made primarily of ceramite which can easily withstand lasgun (or multi-las) hits, showing only a slight scorch mark for their efforts. Astartes are meant to fight much, MUCH bigger threats than rebel Guardsmen, and their equipment is designed for that. Lasguns are also jokingly referred to as flashlights in the 40K community, they're the weakest weapon in the game (a laser rifle that never jams and can blow off unarmored limbs, mind you). If you put half a million of them all firing at the same target though.... that can cause some damage :P
    It has also been said of Space Marines that nothing that big should move that fast; they can sprint upwards of 50-60 mph. Imagine a full ton of enraged superhuman barrelling at you at highway speeds. I'd shit myself, yourself, and everyone around me's self :P
    That wasn't blood in his eye btw, those were the cameras in his eye lens being revealed as the outer glass was broken by the psyker's attack. Space Marine helmets are kind of like Iron Man's, they display the exterior environment via cameras and a HUD rather than just having eyeholes to see out of. Their suits are capable of being sealed to operate in vacuum so they can't just have visor holes :P
    Additionally, you wouldn't hear a lot of dialogue in a mission like this, as the Astartes all have internal vox units so they can talk to each other in their helmets without broadcasting externally for anyone else to hear. You can hear the Inquisitor's muffled yell of "RECALL THEM IMMEDIATELY" after he listens in on the orbs' conversation through his helmet, which would have blared extremely loudly in the Captain's vox so he acts instantly. As to their quick reaction of murdering him as he's possessed by the Warp; if they hadn't, his mind would have allowed daemons and worse to manifest themselves into the Materium and endanger the ship. The Horus Heresy novel _Flight of the Eisenstein_ details this pretty gruesomely. Fuck you, Ignatius Grulgor :(

  • @Drocksas
    @Drocksas 4 месяца назад +67

    I would like to gush for a moment about how well the animator did when portraying the psykers as a real threat before the space marines even start fighting them. When the astartes first board, they just march through like they're on a patrol, mowing rebels down wholesale, firing their bolters in what seems to be semi-auto. Even the lascannon only made one take cover momentarily.
    But the psykers? They all stop short in the shadows. They check ammo, they position for ambush, hit and run strategies. And when they engage? Brace the bolter against the railing for full auto rain of bolter fire. That's beautiful storytelling without saying a single word!

    • @lordmortarius538
      @lordmortarius538 4 месяца назад +24

      He also did an insanely good job of portraying actual military tactics, such as bracing on the railing for full auto, attacking from multiple angles and creating distractions to open holes in their defense, etc. Very coordinated and smart strategy, which one would expect from Space Marines.

      Great comment, just want to point out that what the rebels used was a multilaser, not a lascannon. A lascannon would have obliterated that marine into a fine mist of burnt blood and ceramite. The multilaser however just left some pockmarks because it didn't have time to focus fire.

    4:30 incense are essential in 40K, as the Adeptus Mechanicus believe that blessing the machine spirit in weapons make them fire more accurately and prevent jamming. While this may seem outlandish, the idea that remnant AI hiding in technology actually respond to the prayers (unknowingly to the AdMech who believe in the tech itself) implies that praying and burning incense DOES make the weapon perform better.

    • @lordmortarius538
      @lordmortarius538 4 месяца назад +6

      There's also the concept that low-level psychic fields that are generated even by non-psykers can affect their equipment, much like the orks do but on a lesser scale. Even so, a small jam in a weapon because one didn't take the time to bless it properly can be catastrophic.

There was no communication with the fleet, and in the besieged cities people began to go crazy with despair and worship Tzeentch. After the orcs, the guards also had to deal with cultists and a demonic invasion. Only three people survived (Commissar Atia Holmg, Inquisitor Alonso Barro and nun Alita Stein).
    Cool book, one of a whole series (series about Commissar Holmg). But not canon. Russia is full of such books. GW has nothing to do with them.

    This is definitely one of the coolest fan animations for any franchise ever. The fact one dude made all of it still doesn't quite process in my head. As for what's going on, it's seemingly a non-canon warp or xenos faction that the Space Marines are fighting so we know very little about it. If the project had continued we might have known more.
    If you want more recommendations, the various Warhammer tabletop trailers like Kill Team, 9th edition, 10th edition, Horus Heresy are pretty good popcorn videos. If you want to learn more about specific things, I suppose Majorkill or Luetin will be your best bets as they are the two channels that dive more into specific topics. Helsreach is another video people love, although it is LOOOONG.
    Always a treat watching people unfamiliar with the hobby and the lore get introduced to it and get really swept up in how much fun it is, even with its myriad of contradictions, vague dead ends and misconceptions.

    If you're looking for a slightly different angle in warhammer 40k reactions I can strongly recommend a Weshammer story hour video, like The Last Ascension of Dominic Seroff, or The King of Pigs. The story hours are like horror short stories usually from a perspective of a somewhat regular human being, not about the emperor or primarchs or warp gods or such. Just regular humans dealing with awful things in the darkness of space, it really adds another perspective to warhammer that I didn't have before watching those Weshammer story hours.

    If you like fanmade 40k animations, I'd recommend Steel Coffin. It's a short series about human tank crews in 40k and very well made.
    Also, I recommend Dread Fall by Max Murray. It is a project about the dreadnaughts of the Astartes and very well made.

    12:00 There are two kinds of Warhammer Fan, and there is no shame in being in either camp but it is distinguishable.
    Those who recognize the Inquisition when they see them, and those who do not.
    You do get half points cause you recognized and remembered the Mechanicus robes are just as red and tube filled. :)

    Real quick as to why they were waving, essentially, incense over their weapons:
    This is because there is a held belief in the Imperium that each machine, whether it be weapon or ship, has a "machine spirit" inside them that helps them in battle or travel. The Adeptus Mechanicus, a faction of technology priests, provided methods to appease these machine spirits.
    Now, yes, it sounds silly and odd, but if you pray over your gun and, suddenly, you find yourself nailing shots you, otherwise, would have NO CHANCE making...is it really all that silly?

    Like others have said, give Helsreach by Richard Dolan a go, but be prepared to put a good 2 or so hours aside to watch the entire series. It is an incredible story and well animated.
    Another one I adored was Death Of Hope by Mark Louis Spark. There are two trailers that are a must watch, and then Death Of Hope itself is a good 25 minutes long but very lore heavy and accurate, maybe a little too heavy for someone not having read the Heresy books. But the detail Mark puts into it are next level.

    The end is even more insane when you realise that those stone pillars around the marine are actually platforms as large as his own off in the distance and its not sand its clouds floating around them. You can see the other marines teleporting in if you watch closely. That means those statues are kilometres high!!!

    Careful, the Astartes videos were my first ever warhammer intro. I started watching videos explaining the lore behind them. Cut to two years later, and I'm writing fan theories on which primarchs will come back into the setting next, and what Constantine Valdor is up to. It's a slippery slope, and the Astartes videos are the push.

    "A little bit of a drama between fanbase and games workshop" Oh brother you don't know half of it.
    Half of the 40k fanbase is openly hostile to Games Workshop and the other half hates GW too.
    GW have been hating on the fanbase for years, so many horror stories from GW Store managers etc., it's way beyond reasonable doubt, and they have been full on anti-consumer for at least the past decade.
    In this instance they openly went after all people who did fan animations, the ones who got hired for the failed Warhammer+ project were bound in prohibitive contracts, the rest were bullied with takedowns and threatened with legal action, all within a month or two.
    PS: The original artist is making animations again, using his own legally distinct variation of space marines, I think he dropped first clip about a month ago, his youtube channel renamed and rebranded with no reference to the Astartes project.

    Okay so that alien sphere is technically from 30k but it's not inherently impossible that they're still around. It's called a Yu’vath. A species that was fairly dominant during 30k. They are big boy psychers but pretty much lost their home to chaos and were practically hunted to extinction by the imperium.
