I feel ya mate, in 12 year's we have put aside our deposit for a house because horse's,,, yes horse's come first! Apparently 1 is no where near enough. Amazing what we get on our knees and do.
John with your tank set up. As you said you may never fill your rain water tank but plumb the overflow into the other tanks. Waste not want not as rain water won't hurt the horses or garden
We have to harvest our drinking water here. So we catch it all and it goes into our rain tanks. Our ground water here is very very salty so its not an option unfortunately
So we obviously use the metric system, but a lot of things that we talk in are imperial as that's how they are sold (eg bars, headers, sprayers) but in terms of the level Im talking inches as that's what's on the level.

Are the solar panels on the house the primary source of power or are you able to tie onto the grid system ?
Yer that's right, we are completely off grid with solar and batteries with a gen set for back up
