  • Today, we are travelling to the north end of Lake Dunstan, in Central Otago and through that famous old gold-mining area of Bendigo. From here, we head east to Tinkers, or Matakanui as it is known today, but first, we must traverse the intriguing Thompson Gorge Track over and through the Dunstan Mountain range.
It is a lovely Central Otago day as I ride north from Cromwell, this time on a Suzuki DR650 from Central Otago Motorcycle Hire. This road is sandwiched between Lake Dunstan and the Dunstan Range, granting us incredible views. All too soon, we arrive at the gravel Bendigo Loop Rd, which takes us into Bendigo. Here, you get the impression that gold today comes in bottles, as vineyards and cherry orchards surround us, bustling with horticulture and tourism activity. But if you are after a trip, back down memory lane into the days of hard work and occasional extravagant riches, there are plenty of historical gold-related sites here to explore.
That is not happening today, as I have arranged to meet a local farmer and ride back through the gorge together. But the best-laid plans sometimes go awry.
We trust you enjoy viewing this Remote Places NZ video; it certainly brings many memories to me.

Great video. I went down that way on my motorbike a couple of months ago. Over Lindis Pass to end up in Omakau. I went to Poolburn and Upper Manorburn Dams, Alexandra, The Obelisk and back to Alexandra on the following day. I still can't figure out why I didn't go down the Thompsons Gorge Rd on the way to Omakau. It would have been way more interesting than going via Luggate and Cromwell. Oh well, a good excuse to go down there again next year.

Thanks for that, great vid. I live in Alexandra and any time I've mentioned this road, people who've been there build it up to sound like they crossed the Himilayas ha ha. Now I've seen it it looks quite do-able. Cheers

Pretty cool. Well done. That is my back yard & I have done that treck many times. Lately was to check out Santana Minerals operations in there of which I have invested into buying shares. Exciting times ahead. It was a shame you didn't go up to Bendigo, Welshtown & Logans Cromwell Reef workings. Or show more of the Come In Time Battery. looked a bit windy up there.

Brings back memories of a 3 day 4x4 trip from Omaru and around Otago/Canterbury plains area. Even more surprised to find a 2 man team and a tracked back hoe prospecting for gold 30km from the nearest road. Amusing to find such an assortment of porn mags in those musting rest stops.

Hey there, enjoying your videos for a look at possible trips. I've driven to the Come In Time stamper before and not ventured further. My question is, is the road mostly as shown in the video or is there any gnarly bits that would suggest not driving it in a Subaru Forester. I'm experienced on gravel roads but sometimes there's always one possible obstacle that isn't worth the risk while on my own and out of normal rescue type range.
