How to kill Root knot Nematodes no dig

- In this video I show part of my strategy to take care of my root knot nematode problem.
I'm using marigolds to help suppress the RKN, however some different considerations are in order because I don't plan to dig them into the soil.
I hope this strategy will work and I will continue to give updates on how it is doing.
Thank you for watching, please comment!
I randomly planted French Marigolds in among the tomatoes in two beds last season and those were the only two beds that produced! The rest were riddled with RKNs. So every bed will be half French Marigolds this year! Plus, yeah RKNs hate living organic matter and anything sea-based, so lots of compost and crabmeal, too.
Hello 👋🏻 Daisy, does fish emulsion work too? Thanks 🙏🏼🌷
Just discovered my carrot crop affected by RKN. I will be planting marigolds & I may solarize the bed this summer.
I have also heard that mustard greens will knock back root knot nematodes. Eat some and till the rest in the soil. Worth studying.
Now for part 2. Show us whether that nematodes treatment worked!
Davide I'm also in Sacramento and am impacted by the dreaded RKN. I have been experimenting with Mitey Mustard and this year I am trying grafting heirloom tomatoes onto nematode resistant root stock... We shall see
very helpful video i am going to use it in my tamarillo (mostly liked by these nematodes) which i have intercropped with avocados. I saw on ebay you could get seeds for propagation of marigold (tagetes patula)
Thank you, this was exactly what I was looking for! Very helpful...
I'll tell you, I had one of the best crops of tomatoes from this bed this summer, but to be honest the nematode results were not as good as I had hoped. Most plants still were infected, and most of them died by the end of September. I am not sure if the marigolds had any suppressive effects, or if the great amount of organic matter allowed the tomatoes to produce well despite the infection. I did notice that any roots that grew in the compost layer were not infected, but the deeper ones were. Showing that nematodes may not prefer living in compost.
Davide Antonicelli I appreciate your response. I plan, like you did, to bury my marigold with compost, flowers and all. If I’m lucky, I get nematode protection AND I get free marigold transplant next spring.or so I hope...
Love the use of the green manure from the marigolds! Root Not Nematodes can be a pain in the butt!
They are a pain in the but !!!
As an aside … that was awesome, zingy music.
Thank you for sharing this! So informative!
Beneficial nematodes is the way to go good luck
Thanks for the great information
Thank you. Checked my peppers today and 1 of them has it and I has been stunted for months
In the cool months grow Mustards. They can be added back into the soil the same way the marigolds were to fight the root nematodes.
I'm assuming these kinds of nematodes are different from "beneficial nematodes" right??? I see some people using nematodes to control other pests like fungus gnats
Yes these are different nematodes. In fact I think you can use certain beneficial nematodes to help control these root know nematodes. I have not yet tried making a purchase for those.
Are Root knot Nematodes the same as club root?
Thanks.this is helpful.
You should have tilled the marigolds into the ground with the organic matter instead of just layering it on top.
Do you have an update?
Yes, it didn't quite work as well as I had hoped. I still got infection after the fact, but perhaps not as strong. I'll be doing a few more experiments in the near future. Going to run one this season.
@@davideantonicelli9403 can't wait to see what you have in store.
@@davideantonicelli9403 thanks for your honesty
Can you tell us the name of the marigold variety? Also, did you cut the roots off before mulching in the marigolds? I understood that the marigold roots traps the root knot nematodes.
Hi, These are seeds I harvested from a variety called "Nema Gone" I purchased from burpees I believe a few years back. I saved the seeds from it. In my experience the marigold does NOT trap the root knot nematodes. I have never seen any infection in any roots from any marigold variety I've used. I use french marigolds as well as companion plants. The marigolds supposedly release substances that kill or in my experience deter nematodes.
It has to be French marigolds. They will actually kill tge nematodes
Did this method work after you planted the next Spring?
I have many of those! The nematodes 😱 thanks for the reminder information! Regards from Arizona 🏜
Hi. Any updated videos about this?
So how did it work. I do no dig and have been putting fresh mushroom compost on my garden every year and i have a bad infestation of them Naughty little creatures.
Thanks champ!

Andy, just call Ellen for more views. Thank me later.
I thought nematodes were good?
There are good and bad ones
Not these ones!
The good nematodes will destroy bad pests and the bad nematode eggs. I just sprayed some and will be spraying more in a couple of days. I ordered 3 types of beneficial nematodes from ARBICO Organics. They fedex them overnight. You want the SF for the bad nematodes. And I'm planting French Marigolds but will be tilling it in with crab meal.
