Don't forget buses - they would all have to be modified to have the doors on the right hand side, otherwise passengers would not be able to get in and out on the pavement side of the road.
Very true! It'd never happen anyway, there's no real benefit and it would cause untold disruption and cost to a country that seems pretty bankrput right now... Interesting, statistically, left-hand driving nations are safer for a number of key reasons, as we recently covered in another video: ruclips.net/video/yF8JJbZUqXE/видео.html
There was an attempt so I read in the 1960's to switch over, however it never happened due to cost and practicality. Seeing how much more complex our roads are nowadays, I think that it's highly unlikely we'll ever switch. The cost alone would be astronomical. Plus seeing that the Republic of Ireland borders Northern Ireland, it'd just cause confusion. Likewise I don't think Ireland would change over for the same reasons.
20+MILLION RHD vehicles on British roads, who is gonna pay to convert them? I ran a LHD Volvo in the UK for nigh on 30 years and didn't have any real problems but overtaking was pretty fraught! If everybody was in the same boat it'd be chaos!
I was in Sweden on the day they switched. They made the decision because they were about to start building their motorway system, and it would become prohibitively expensive to switch once all their junctions were designed for LHS driving. Even back then it was a hugely expensive and complicated process, but worth it for them because they were a part of the Continental road system. In the UK, every motorway junction would have to be rebuilt, and most roundabouts as well. Every street sign would need replaced. Every bus would become redundant. And for a generation, accident rates would go up until all vehicles were RH drive, because overtaking would become more dangerous. As an isolated island the benefits for all this cost and chaos would be near zero. Hardly worth discussing - not going to happen.
Although Sweden started preparing years in advance, older vehicles were not rendered obsolete overnight. Having visited Sweden prior to the changeover (from Norway - that challenged some of the locals!) and after, I can confirm that older right hand drive buses continued to be used after the change, and yes, passengers were dropped off in the middle of the street, but in town centres there seemed to be pedestrian islands for safer exiting.
Didn't watch a second of this video a stupid subject to discuss. Little Englanders voted Brexit they are not going to copy european driving patterns!!!
