Bob Jones, Beauty, and the Catholic Church - Sam Guzman

  • Sam Guzman's formation as a Christian ended up bringing him to Bob Jones University, known for its strong Fundamentalist convictions. Interestingly enough, he began working at an art gallery on campus, and that encounter with beauty caused him to ask all sorts of questions about history, theology, and who Jesus calls us to be. Those questions would eventually lead him to the Catholic Church.

I visited the cathedral of Santiago
    De Compostela in Spain.
The mind numbing, visual beauty alone will stay with me for life.

@@PInk77W1 Santiago De Compostela, is the name of the city also, in Spain.
      It's amazing.
They also have a giant sensor there which they swing though the cathedral.
They didn't swing it when I was there for 12 o clock mass, Dec 6, 2022 (it's the end of the Camino de Santiago/pilgrims way of saint James, aka Santiago) but I saw it operating on RUclips.
If that is anything like the sanctuary, it's astounding also.
The sanctuary art work in the cathedral de Santiago de Compostela Spain is mind bogglingly beautiful... And I'm speaking as someone who visited the Cistine Chapel in the Vatican which is of exquisite beauty also.
But imo, nothing the same as Santiago.
The mass was NO in Spanish. Even that was very beautiful and dignified.
I can understand pilgrims so much better now.
I pity in many ways those pilgrims that weren't Catholic. They didn't quite know what they were looking at.
However, being said, many were on a personal pilgrimage, many cried, but they were all genuine.
The Catholic church... simply astonishing in every way.

Very true. Beauty, truth, substance, holiness - all these we can find in the Catholic Church. Also reason, logic, common sense - these make the Catholic faith truly wonderful and worth believing. Let us pray that all Catholics may live their faith with more fervour and honesty.

The religion of the reformation is simply not that that Jesus established. Why in the world would anyone want to practice it?

    • @olivetaelizabeth

The Leader of Protestanism Martin Luther had a profound love and devotion to Mary but in today's Protestantism the name or honour of Mary is not tolerated and the divisions within Protestantism are immense. We have to understand where the frustration comes from. Many Pastors know the truth but are unwilling to accept it and bring it out to their congregation. Let us Catholics read more and more of the Bible and take every opportunity to bring this truth out to our Protestant brothers and sisters.

      @@olivetaelizabeth hi Ma'am, you wrote: _'Attend Mass today....'_ - i can't - it's a day too late.
see, Christians imitate, follow, obey Christ - when did He attend service? - see Luke 4:16
you wrote: _'....and you will realize the truth.'_ - God's Truth is actually what caused me to be Christian and leave catholicism after 35 yrs. if you'd allow Truth to work in your heart - you'd discover who God is, how to love Christ and perhaps how to walk in Truth as well.
but Ma'am - if you blatantly choose to ignore what Scripture proves for the Christian - you will continue to be deceived by this paganism.
according to the entire Bible - sunday, the 1st day, is a day too late and it's just another work day.
this is what all in the entire Bible believed about this day, even after His resurrection.

@@tony1685 Please read Exodus 31:12-17 God the Father said to Moses"Tell the Israelites: Take care to keep my Sabbath for that is to be the token between you (Israel) and Me (God) throughout the generations. You must keep Sabbath as something Sacred. Whoever desecrates it shall be put to death. If anyone does work on that day he must be uprooted out of his people. So shall the Israelites observe the sabbath keeping it throughout their generations as a pertual covenant."
Exodus 35:3 Moses said to the Israelites: "You shall not even light a fire in any of your dwellings on the Sabbath day."
In the above verses we can plainly see that God had entrusted the sabbath specifically to the Israelites as a sign of the irrevocable covenant.
Luke 4:16 As Jesus was a Jew (Israelite) it would only be right that he follow the customs of the Jews of keeping the sabbath on the 7th day.
But there is something greater that the Protestant community tend to ignore, please see below:
Even after the Resurrection of Christ the first Christians did keep the Sabbath because once again, these Christians were Jews. They went to the Synagogue and at the same time they began celebrating the Supper of the Lord which we see in John 6 Jesus repeatedly asking us to do this in memory of him. (Which is the Mass ) And this is what the first Christians began celebrating, the breaking of bread as Jesus had commanded, which 2000 years later we still see it happening every single day in the Catholic church.
The resurrection of Jesus took place on a Sunday and these first Christians began observing Sunday as the day of the Lord and celebrated the feast of the Eucharist (breaking of the bread or the Lord's supper) every Sunday, keeping the commandment of Jesus and observing the sign of the new covenant he established with us Christians.
Matthew 26:26-28 Jesus took bread said the blessing, broke it and giving it to his disciples said" Take and eat; this is my body" . Then he took a cup, gave thanks and gave it to them saying" Drink from it all of you, for this is the blood of my covenant which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins".
There is a distinction between Sabbath and the Lord's day. Sabbath would be observed specifically by the Jews and the Christians would be observing the covenant that Jesus established with us.

      @rolandovelasquez135
      Rolando,
      Remember who Jesus prayed for:
      ▪︎LUKE 22:31-32
"Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I HAVE PRAYED FOR YOU that your faith may not fail; and when you have turned again (after the denials), strengthen your brethren".
It is clear in Scripture that Christ promised the protection of the Holy Spirit, saying, "I will ask the Father and HE WILL GIVE YOU another Paraclete to be with you always; the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, since it neither sees him nor recognizes him because he remains with you and WILL BE within you . . . . the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send will remind you of all that I have told you" (John 14: 16-17, 26).
Peter, receives the gift of infallibility (a negative gift in the sense it keeps him from teaching error on matters of faith and morals) with the other apostles and their successors, the future Popes and bishops around the world.
Our Lord gives an eternal promise to His Church built on Peter:
      ▪︎MATHEW 28, 18-20
      18. Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
      19. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit,
      20. teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS, UNTIL THE END OF THE AGE.”
Such promise means FOREVER. No second thoughts, because God does what He says and stays with His one true Church, the Catholic Church, forever. To contradict our Lord's promise would not be the action of a true Christian; it would be an act of heresy.
Do you trust those words from Jesus?
