GIRLLLL. You can say that again. Most places have at least ONE window, but it is often very small or facing a building wall and preventing ANY light from getting in. That is the TOUGH part. I don't blame you, though. Natural light is EVERYTHING!
jnaydaily Just finished the video and those tips are so helpful! I live in a big city too and living near the subway is👏🏻everything👏🏻. Even if it means paying a little more in rent I’d say it’s definitely worth it!
My apartment (in Brooklyn ) only has windows in the bedrooms (there’s 3) so none in living room/kitchen or bathrooms and it can be TOUGH, especially when we’re cooking and there’s no window to open so that smoke alarm doesn’t go off. And even in my room, it’s like I may as well not have a window bc it’s so tiny and faces a building so very little sunlight gets through and room always looks sooo dark, even on sunny days! Been here a couple months so I’m a little more used to it but it was so jarring at first since i was used to living on campus with dorms that had HUGE windows in each room
I lived in a windowless room for a few years. It was actually really peaceful and quiet. Best sleep I've ever gotten-- completely silent at night, which is rare in the city. I sure do like the windows of my current place though! Ventilation is always a plus.

Same, except I moved from NYC to LA. I think if you plan on moving to an expensive city, you NEED to save. Those "I moved to the city with $50 and no job" people are lucky, not the norm.
I’m from Brooklyn born and raised, and the only reason why shit is so expensive like food and living cost is because of gentrification. Also the amount of Rodents and roaches have definitely increased due to gentrification. NYC is a busy fast place environment period, it isn’t made for faint heart, you need tough skin. If all these gentrifiers move away, Brooklyn and NYC will be affordable again and less crowded.

Now let me ask you this, recently visited in January and I loved it but I'm still confused on why so many people see it so negatively and they haven't even stepped foot there. What do you think?
I moved with a backpack and my important documents, in a year I was able to start college again for free, get an ok job for a college student, go from a ratty apartment to a nice dorm, been with a boyfriend a love who’s family is inviting me to their vegan thanksgiving, and get paid for doing research. I even get my groceries delivered to me. If you can find the opportunities take it.

New Yorker here👋🏾 Queens/Brooklyn raised. What people fail to realize is that NY is an outlier in almost EVERY. SINGLE. WAY. Knowing that from jump should minimize that shock when you get here, which is why your video was helpful. This city is expensive because of supply and demand, it's one of the top travel destinations in the world and people all over have always wanted to live here. It's also a city with finite space to build - Manhattan, Staten Island, Brooklyn & Queens are islands. High demand with comparatively limited stock and developer and landlord greed drives up housing costs, and gentrification definitely hasn't helped. More and more of my friends are moving out when they have children and overall people are migrating from NY state. I have always loved it here, but the cold is getting to me now that I'm older (40s) so I'm trying to find another vibrant city but with warmer weather, ideally near the water.

Granny Carts. It's a thing here. We stop each other in the streets and elevators to ask each other where we get our carts, they're so crucial. Makes that five block walk in the rain from the grocery store, or laundry really palatable. The best granny cart I've ever had is from Costco, really worth the price. For smaller, easier, cloth carts check Ikea, and the Container Store. Also, get a smaller cross body bag for quick and easy access to metrocard/cash/chapstic while your backpack is on your back. I’m actually from the coast of SC Charleston but I live in Denver now. I miss the food😭😭 NYC is exhausting to visit I always need a day or two to recoup so I can only imagine living there for 4 years whew. But it’s such a magical place at times. Glad you survived and thrived it.
LOVED this. I live in NYC and was so not prepared for how difficult going to the grocery store would be. Also I am so onboard with the sublet advise. My favorite website since I have been here is spare room. It is where I have found the cheapest rent AND actually found normal people PLUS mostly you just have to put down first months.
Additional tips from a Brooklyn bred life long New Yorker: 1. Family Dollar and Target are THE places to go for good quality & cheap household needs 2. Farmers Markets throughout the city are WAY cheaper and better quality than Wholefoods (Your WELCOME! lol) 3. Limit going out for socializing and opt for hangouts at home, you and your friends/family can take turns hosting game nights/sports nights etc 4. Thrifting in NYC is THE best, you can get great (sometimes brand new!) clothes in places like Goodwill and amazing treasures can be found at flea markets!
I've been here for four years too and this is so spot on! It feels more like home now, but wheeewww that first year (maybe 2) were like a rollercoaster of all the highs and all the lows. Love your videos :)
This is so concise and so thorough. I’ve lived in NYC for the last four months and absolutely every single thing that you touched on has been so relevant to me. My advice to anyone who is considering moving to New York is to just be prepared, and be prepared to work your ass off for a few months to make it. Moving here has changed my life in so many positive ways. ❤️
Thank you for giving like an actual dollar amount, so many videos are like “so you’ll need this this and this” , but like not give you any idea how much those things are roughly going to cost. 😊😊😊💕
Lived in nyc my whole life and it's overrated. It's nice to visit, not to live. Pros and cons everywhere you go but the biggest con in nyc is the cost of living. What you get here versus another state is insane. Sometimes I feel like the quality of life is compromised.
Amen. 3 years there taught me how simple tasks were sooo much more difficult. Laundry? Groceries? whew. And yes, the cat calling was something else. I once got yelled at before even leaving the stoop lol

NYC is a great place to VISIT, but it will never be home to me. I turned down a really great job in the city because it would take 7 figures, not 6, just to keep me from going mental. I like space, good service, good mexican food, peace and quite, being able to drive without excess hassle, and personal space.
Came from Cape Town South Africa and been living here for about 1 year and 3 months and each day is a new day of omg I hate this place or I’ll never leave. Even my therapist told me she has a lot of bad days here because living here takes a huge toll on your mental health.

I’m hoping to move to Brooklyn in about 5 years. I’m gonna go to community college at home, I definitely don’t think I’d be mentally ready in about 2 years. I’m 16 now and I’ve been needing/wanting a job since i turned 16 but nothing motivated me more than we I realized I need to move to New York, because I knew I needed to save up as much money as I could for the future (which was my goal before but It just made me realize that I really need to start now) so I have a job interview in 2 days! I’m gonna try my best to save most of the money I make in those 5 years lol. But my friends and I have a trip planned to New York in about two years which I hope will help me decide if I really wanna live in New York. I’ve never been NY and we’ll only be staying there for a week but I feel like that’s enough time for me to tell.
i've always vaguely wanted to move to NYC just to try it and this video told me "don't do it, simply finding and apartment will make your head explode"

OMG! You are an angel! Thanks for the kind words and encouragement, love
I’m actually from the coast of SC Charleston but I live in Denver now. I miss the food😭😭 NYC is exhausting to visit I always need a day or two to recoup so I can only imagine living there for 4 years whew. But it’s such a magical place at times. Glad you survived and thrived it.
Yes, another Carolina girl here! Born and raised in Hickory.
LOVED this. I live in NYC and was so not prepared for how difficult going to the grocery store would be. Also I am so onboard with the sublet advise. My favorite website since I have been here is spare room. It is where I have found the cheapest rent AND actually found normal people PLUS mostly you just have to put down first months.
I moved to London a year ago to study and now I'm going to start work. Advice is on-point 🙌🏾 and a great reminder to myself.
MesRevesEnRose omg! So excited for you! Thanks for watching and for the positive feedback 💕
Tiffany I oooh great tips !
I lived in Brooklyn for 2 years, had a great time, and then was like, peace I'm out haha
Jill Sarah G Lololol. I’m cracking up and don’t blame you 🙈. Happy that you realized it early on 💕
I've been here for four years too and this is so spot on! It feels more like home now, but wheeewww that first year (maybe 2) were like a rollercoaster of all the highs and all the lows. Love your videos :)
So, so glad you can relate and thanks so much for sharing you thoughts on living in the city! Sending you lots of love girlie
Lynda absolutely agree !!
I lived in NY and moved as a teen. I wouldn't move back. It's too dirty with too many potholes. Georgia is so much better, fresher air.
It’s the rats for me. I won’t even visit cause I’m scared of seeing them on the streets. Yes ima wimp but I can’t 🤷♀️
20 seconds in and she just seems like the sweetest human
Amen. 3 years there taught me how simple tasks were sooo much more difficult. Laundry? Groceries? whew. And yes, the cat calling was something else. I once got yelled at before even leaving the stoop lol
I have never related to a video more. I'm halfway through my second year here, and all of these things were SO REAL for me. Wish I had this video before moving!! To everyone watching this fixing to move-- the first year does suck. It super does. But you learn so much and have so much to be proud of! amaaaaazing video. subscribed for life.
This is probably the best video I’ve seen on moving to NYC. Very quick to watch and no back stories or stupid stuff no one cares about. Thanks! Probably not moving to nyc anytime soon, but later on in life.
Nyc is an acquired taste, it’s not for everyone
Facts all day
Especially cuz new Yorkers are "harsh"
@@KCisScreaming Oh they can dish it, but can't take it, from what I've seen... I've been told I'm harsh, so I'd fit right in.
@Lemon lolli Flowers Lol right? They're not as bad as most people think. New Yorkers funnily enough, are actually pretty nice, outside New York, lol. They're just a little rough around the edges. I've met concentrations of ruder people in other places; some, in places most would never expect.
omg I love you. I’m apply for a job in New York and feeling so anxious about living in a concrete jungle. It’s so nice to hear your tips! You are gorgeous, funny, and brilliant!
Omg all ur advice about like digging deep to figure out priorities also applies so well to friendships like dang I got two types of life advice all wrapped up into one
Sooo proud of a fellow Carolina girl! I am from Charleston and have been in Charlotte for the past 15 years! LOVE you and your channel😍😍😍
Excellent tips. This is probably the one city in the country where you really have to consider how important windows are to you 😂
Hellllll no I'd rather stay in Chicago even though it's cold as fuck here and expensive too lol
This hit when you said no windows lol. I moved to Seattle in a room without windows. Seattle, the gloomiest of cities... with no windows. My first year was HARD af
ha so true, im in queens and my bedroom and livingroom window faces a brick wall! It's safe to say I can NOT have any nice plants in there. So jealous of yours!
Wow, no one ever talks about Queens anymore. What's it like these days
@@ShelbySteele23 Its quietly but rapidly becoming the next Brooklyn lol Everyone is catching on so a lot of the neighborhoods are changing. The traffic and construction are unbearable some days.
@@k.michellebrown5554 queens is the new Brooklyn lol. Anywhere but the roughest parts of the bronx is gentrifying. You know you're about to get gentrified when strangers that aren't even from NYC know some of the names of the neighborhoods
I lived in NYC and recently moved to Seattle and I want to go back to NYC so badly. You are absolutely right in you either love it and make your place in NYC or hate it.
Girl, I live in Harlem and I’m cackling at these truths you’re dropping. SPEAK ON IT! 💛
i've been living in jersey with a view of nyc right outside my bedroom window my whole life. I've always wanted to move there for college and maybe the rest of my twenties, and although some of this is stuff I already knew from all the times I have been to the city, some of this was brand new to me and very helpful.
My husband and I almost died laughing at “bitch gon’ pay that rent” 😂😂😂. You are the best can’t wait to see more videos on your new city 😊
Facts 👏🏾facts👏🏾and more facts👏🏾. I lived there for 3.5 years several years ago, and your advice was still super on point. Listen to her about the inconvenience of just getting your groceries home, JESUS. Basic everyday life other places are true luxuries in NYC, but its an experience I’m grateful for, and met my NYC husband there 🥰
your energy, humor, and positivity are infectious, honey!!!
As someone living in New York and still not apartment hunting... all those requirements solidify why there are so many homeless and why so many New Yorkers like myself are looking to move
Agree on everything but the car. I brought my car from Boston and it's the one thing that makes grocery shopping, trips to Ikea, getting to my gym, and hitting the beach easy!
Girl you’re the third charlottean I’ve come across on RUclips that has moved to NYC! I’m from Charlotte as well and I think this has to be a sign.
You just breathed life into my soul. Thank you for telling it like it is.
i go to school here and i think i want to live here after school and this video is so informative! thank you! as a shy girl with all my nyc friends being made off twitter, i would love to see a video about how to put yourself out there in the city.
My first impression of you: OMG you’re so pretty and melanin popping yeassss 😍😍😍
I live on Long Island and I can not be in new york city for more than one day 😂
Also, your hair is stunning. Can you do a curly hair tutorial?
Meira Maynard omg 😅. You are cracking me up about not wanting to be in the city for more than one day. I feel that. Also, thanks so much for the kind words! I don’t curl my hair, sadly. These are extensions that come in this curl pattern. The brand is Freetress and these are the GoGo curls and the presto curls 💕
Same! I lived in queens for like 2 seconds and folks were like um you're not from here are you? Born and raised in New York
Just discovered. I love you!!! I like this shirt too. Where did you get it
You really spelled it out clearly. I was amazed at all the shops that were open. Thanks.
Spot on! Born and raised in NY and moved to LA in my 20s. Came back to NYC for 6 months and just hated it so I just happily moved to DC🌺
Wow, this is the first video I've seen from you, so funny! & I have no plans to move to NYC but so glad I stumbled across your channel. 🥰
After all this $ talk, I think you would be so amazing at a budgeting video!
Ima give you one budgeting tip right now, dont live here and you’ll save money lmfa
i've always vaguely wanted to move to NYC just to try it and this video told me "don't do it, simply finding and apartment will make your head explode"
Subscribed as soon as you started talking omg the ENERGY
Lol 😂 I like your sense of humor . You’re fun to watch and listen to.
10 grand saved? That's a down payment on a small house in the rural South. Lol! Btw, your honesty, personality and beauty are A- mazzzing. Fan here!!!👍😁💕
Your smile is so contagious, oh my god!!
I’m just viewing your video as I’m relocating as well. This helps!!! I al moving there and not moving with a roommate
u r so great, just wow❤️ I planning to move to NYC in next year to be a student and was so afraid about all of stuff what people saying about ny, u make my fear gone, thanks!
I love your apartment’s aesthetic
Backpack, yes! Comfy, cute shoes, yes! Staying in and having chill friday night hangs with friends, hell yes!! Love visiting this city!!!🥰
I loooove your energy! And so proud of you, strong girl !!!

I have lived in NYC for 2 and a half yrs and I WISH this video existed before I moved!!! NO ONE talks about these incredibly important things👏🏼
planning on going to college in nyc! this video and all these comments were so helpful :)
A lot of your tips are SO important for people who have never lived in a city! I lived in Boston for 5 years after being raised in the burbs and learned those “lessons” REAL quick lol
Omg i love your hair😍 and drop your skin care routine! And thank you for the helpful tips I’m planning moving to NYC so this helps so much!
i love your energy omg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i’m from NYC, born and raised though now i live in Connecticut. but i agree with everything in this video
10 seconds in and I LOVE your energy.
I wanna be this girl’s friend. The vibessss 🤩
This is seriously the most informative video out there. thank you!
The sublet is a good idea. I jumped right into a lease. I got pretty lucky but its still rocky nonetheless
OMG I LOVE YOUR ENERGY!!! I’m from NC as well, about an hour away from Charlotte. So thank you for this authentic ass video 🦋
Im born and raised in the Bronx, our Mexican restaurants give chips and salsa (no extra cost unless you want more)...
the subway sucks... ughh hate it
I love living in the Bronx (I'm from the north east part of the Bronx) and people should come check it out here, it's awesome!
Omg the energy is drawing me in I can’t resist 😍
um i’d just like to say this is my first time stumbling upon your channel and 1 minute into the video i already hit subscribe. your energy is just so refreshing ✨✨✨
Never moving to NYC but still watching lol. Love your channel! ❤🥰
“The calmness is going to be robbed from you” 😂😂 I feel that.
Girl you are stunning!!
Lol!!!! I am up at 4 am hollllering at this video. So spot on ! NYC born & raised & now living in Nassau LI. Did real estate in the city as well for a while & yes apartments can go quickly & the requirements are strict. it’s insane how much rent is but hey you’re paying for location as well. Love your vids - new subbie 💕
Long Island?
@@brownskinbeauty. yep !
Thanks for providing a realistic picture. More power to the people that are willing to go through all of this. I will stick to visiting.
Your tiny snow pendant is adorable! It looks wonderful with other jewelry, you have such good taste! 😍
I really appreciate your realistic advice! I've been saving for 3 years to be able to move to nyc and now I'm just waiting for the pandemic to be over enough lmao! My goal was to save 10k but thankfully I'm well past that now. I don't want to act like it was easy though. I'm not rich so it really required a lot of discipline to be able to save that much!
Lol, you're adorable! Fun to watch, and great tips!
These are wonderful tips!
