This video came to me when I was crying because of my severe procrastination. I hate myself for my procrastination and the fact that I do it. I can make visually impressive art pieces but I have always felt like a sorry excuse for an artist because I'm not constantly making something. I'm always finding excuses to not make art. I was literally CRYING and then I happened upon this video. Thank you for your guidance. I was praying for some sort of wisdom to fall on me. Thank you.

    • @kandyappleview
      @kandyappleview 3 года назад +7

that struggle of constant productivity is so real! you're not alone in that. be kind to yourself! in my own experience, i learned that when i feel like i'm procrastinating, sometimes it's NOT actually procrastination. it's most often 1 of these 4 things:
      inadequacy, time, avoidance, fear
      1. feeling inadequate: usually happens because i'm comparing myself to others out there who are churning out art like some sort of one-man factory. But then i remember that it might only SEEM that way. doesn't mean it's reality. These people are human beings, just like i am. and i'm in glad company.
      2. time: i don't feel like i have enough time for a project, so i don't start it at all. that means i need to break it down into smaller steps that are manageable. even if it's micro steps like just getting out my materials or making the list of what i need to get out. yes, micro steps mean things will take longer than just carving out a block of time to do a lot at once, but any progress is better than not starting at all. occasionally, i find that one step leads to another and i've spent hours on something i thought i didn't have time for.
      3. avoiding the nasty bits: i usually don't like part of a project because i can't understand it right away or i'm not good at it. i remember that no one is good at everything right away, and i'm never going to understand it if i don't try. the more i do it, the better it will get. also micro steps helps me endure even the most tedious of tasks, because i can get it over with quickly and go do something else.
      4. fear: fear of trying and failing. or trying and realizing something about myself i might not want to learn. or others seeing my failure and judging me for it. there's no cure for fear, only courage to do things anyway. i try to remember that and when it's especially tough, i have a close friend who is also an artist that gives me an extra push.
sometimes i still feel like i'm not being productive enough no matter what. we all have those times. don't give up! you're not alone and you can get things done! even just 1 thing is more than 0 things.
sorry this is long. i really hope this helps encourage you. i know how it feels to not have support so i wanna give you some virtual support in your process! 💖💖💖

I unintentionally discovered the ''match your background music with your work'' thing the other day, and it's so shocking how it can make your painting 1000 times more accurate while keeping you so inspired. Also I've been struggling with overcomplicated paintings and I think it comes down to how an overachiever of a person I am, that and my impostor syndrome. The thing is, there's so much talent competitiveness out there that you get used to the feeling that you need to better and faster and more smart than the rest if you ever want to at least make a living of your art or get a decent job position that makes your parents less disappointed on you.

I stopped playing video games to focus on my portfolio and really improve myself so I can get hired or even get my graphic novel published and I’m told I’m not doing anything. I had to laugh when you mentioned listening to vids like yours while you play WoW -- I am literally doing exactly that as we speak. I'm a 50 year old artist, farming dailies in Shadowlands as I recharge my brain listening to you. :D
I also am a strong believer in curated playlists for creation, especially as a creator with ASD. When I write, I can't listen to anything with lyrics or even familiar melodies, or it will pull focus. I put on atmospheric soundtracks related to the scene I'm writing (such as the sounds of a blizzard or thunderstorm for an outdoor adventure scene in that environment). If I'm drawing something in a specific theme or mood, I'll pick music with a similar vibe to keep me in the right headspace.
Thank you as well for bringing up "the creative nest". I was yelled at a lot for having a messy room (especially sharing it with my neat freak sister), but it was MY SPACE, I knew where everything was, I had my tools in reach, and it brought me peace when the rest of the world didn't. Even now my studio space looks like chaos at first glance, but I know where everything is, and what's in it brings me comfort. I can't begin to tell you how much it means to hear that you do it too.

7:25 As you say this 'this ancient sea man who is covered in barnacles and seaweed' I am literally colouring my piece on this mermaid who is covered in seaweed and was originally envisioning barnacles on her shoulders. It sent shivers down my spine, and I am inspired to get back to listening to nautical and ancient sea songs for my paintings!

I think the hardest part in the whole art affair is to stay invested consistently and getting to a point where you have enough direction and focus that you can judge your own work in a really productive way. To me this means finding a good rythm and ways to keep inspiration high. The way I go about creating a piece is to pretend to be a real pro and approach it with that level of confidence. And i dont mean this in an arrogant/overconfident way - but a lot of us out there lack self confidence but you can trick yourself into it. If you tell yourself youre good long enough youll believe it haha. Also staying in the moment and not overthinking the finished piece helps me, especially the early parts of a drawing are more important then some realize so I always try to get the sketch up to snuff before I worry about anything else.
Ultimately its your own passion that will dictate how far you can push yourself.
Ive been drawing since I was a kid but only for one or two years have I been taking it more "serious". Now during covid I had a lot of spare time so I used it for art and during the last two weeks something has clicked. I cant tell exactly what was the conduit, maybe my new workflow, value studies, whatever - but I feel like ive improved more in one month then I did in a whole year. This isnt supposed to be me gushing over my own success (it does feel good tho ngl haha) but more of a inspirational reminder that any one can thrive artistically, and the thing that decides about your growth ultimately is yourself and your passion!
whew that was a long one thanks for reading xd

So, i always liked to draw but only recently started to develop my artistic skills. Watched some of your mentioned artists on youtube before. Now, while listening to you i realized how much i agree with you, you talk about some things i somewhat understood, but didnt realize them, didnt put them into words for myself, especially part about background noise. Instant subscribe!

You are one of the only youtubers that I can listen to while I work. I have tried many podcasts and it almost always comes down to me searching for what they are talking about or getting sucked in their many different sketches or references of artists. Knowledge is overrated. Training in the right things is always more important that seeing more good paintings of 30 different artists. And I thank you so much for changing the intro. I started watching you lately, and when I started listening to your older videos, your intro was distracting me. The way you ease into the music now is exactly what I need and I truly appreciate how much thought you have put in this. Because it shows. And the days you release a new video are always good days in time management, because it helps me so much. Most of the times, I don't even listen to anything after you and it is enough.

Really appreciate your candour in the point about RUclips - considering all your video content is on here! Its a basic thing but I typically use adblocker to not see all the "recommended" videos which just blanks out the front page, same for side bar. Makes YT content search more intentional and not going down rabbit holes - most of the time just listen to artists chatting, such as yourself.

I laughed when you talked about listening to soundtracks when doing art because it made me realise I'd been subconsciously doing the same, like I've had this anime's OP/ED songs on loop for hours while I've been drawing.
Speaking of, I finished my first ever commission the other night, and really wanted to thank you for these videos. Absolutely fantastic to listen to, calming, and just the right amount of background noise while I'm doing lineart.
