  • There has been a good deal of attention lately to health issues related to wind instruments (i.e. bagpipe, trombone, etc.) and the microbial environment that can be created inside of them. Not only can a regular cleaning of your trombone slide help limit health risks but it protects the slide from corrosion/redrot issues and helps the trombone to consistently perform at it's peak! In this video we demonstrate one method for cleaning out your handslide (all you need is a sink, cleaning brush, water and dish detergent) and talk about the pluses and minuses of different slide cleaning solutions. How do you clean your slide? Leave your thoughts in the comments!

Can you do a video of how to properly clean a slide lock and how to lubricate it. There are many videos about cleaning a slide, but not a slide lock. Especially if a slide lock gets stuck, or is hard to unscrew.

Do you clean anything other than the slide? My daughter has one for school, so I’m trying to figure out how to take care of it.

The handslide is really the only area to worry about on a regular basis; you can certainly give the bell section a bath and use the cleaning snake to clean the inside of the tuning slide and neckpipe but any debris accumulation really occurs in the handslide. Thanks for watching and good luck to your daughter on her trombone career!

Just out of curiosity, is that a slide off of a Model 16?

Good eye; it is a 16M slide if you want to be super technical ;) !

@@SchmittMusicTromboneShop Awesome! I thought I couldn't figure it out until I saw the slide crook, quintessential Bach design.

Is there a chance that the lead pipe can be damaged when withdrawing the snake while cleaning the inner slide?

If you have a fixed lead pipe I would not worry about, it shouldn't hurt anything. If you have an interchangeable lead pipe then I'd remove it before cleaning and wash the lead pipe separately. In general don't be worried about it.
