Excellent build. I made two of them using the mat and 4x4 pressure treat. Added wheels so I can move them around. Got one at home and one at the camp. Those Horse stall mats are great backstops, Thanks Jason.
I like that! Every now and again, when I'm getting tired, I'll let one go and it will end up in the woods. I need to look into making one. Thx for the idea.
Those TSC horse mats are useful for so many things. I use them for my home gym floor. At my local TSC you can find thinner mats as well and often mis-cuts or odd sized ends of rolls for cheaper. Hanging a couple layers of overlapping and offset strips of thinner free hanging mats could also work. Screw one layer to the front of the boards and one to the back so that there is a gap between the two for swing of the front layer such that it absorbs much of the energy of the arrow before it hits the back layer. Would be easier to work with also. A narrower strip of thinner rubber will be lighter than a full 3/4" mat. One day I plan to build something like this for my yard.
Scrap wood projects are awesome to do! I made something very similar out of wood I scrounged off the lake shores/backs of coves when the lake levels are drawn down. Made a nice ramp to get in and out of the boat on to shore out of two 2 x 8s joined side by side. I've used it to get deer into the boat too... I did it because some of the shore may look nice and solid (like stones/rocks/pebbles) but when you step out, boom you sink in over your boots.
@@SamkoTradBow Yeah, my "brillance" with the ramp took a few boot fulls of water and one time of getting sunk up to both knees and then sitting down in the mud LMAO!! That GA mud sure can suck you in and hold on!!
October 1st in michigan and then weekly for the rest of my life with no down time! Will be a ton of hunting videos showing the shots, Blood trails, recovery, boning them out and packing them out coming to my patreon channel! Yourube is too restrictive for full content hunting videos as of last January. So all of the hunting videos will be on the patreon with no chains holding any of my content back! I'm so excited for the season to start.
50 meters is too far for a bow. Too many variables with animals moving etc can happen in the time it takes the arrow to get there. I set a personal max shot distance of 20 yards on animals. So for me I like heavy arrows. For hunting you should be a minimum of 10 grains of arrow weight per pound of bow weight
Longbow and for my set up and since I only screwed the mat to the frame at the top, my field tips only go in about a half inch. The mat swings back on hits and absorbs alot of the energy. That with a 57 pound longbow and 720 grain arrows
I use a compound bow with a very similar setup and found arrow removal required a significant effort. Then I tried using a dab of arrow lube on the arrow, just on the backside of the mat, and it made removal super easy! Wasn't prepared for how well the arrow lube worked for this task, almost ending up on my butt lol.
Or start shooting a crossbow, problem solved. Ya just don’t miss by much, even if offhand. Sorry not sorry but I’m out back cooking today and couldn’t resist. I’ll blame it on my tall boy double IPA lol. I might go back to real archery but maybe not…who knows? Seriously though, good thinking. That’s a good looking backstop. If only it was so easy to keep from damaging my fletching on these little 16.5” arrows that my Excalibur shoots!
@@SamkoTradBow dude you’re welcome down in middle TN anytime, 30 miles or so east of Nashville. On second thought one of my best buds lives in Gaylord so if I EVER get up y’all’s way I’ll let you know 😂. But to be clear it was only one beer, in lieu of lunch. Just wasn’t your daddy’s beer!
@@kainklieman9524 I’m good lol. Just so you know, my last archery kill was a doe with a 57# chaparral longbow at 20 yds that went down within sight. Couple of really good friends sort of talked me into trying the Excalibur this year and it’s really been fun shooting it.
In reality though when I built thoa I did not have a bow down here with me. I made this on one of my trips to work on our georgia house. So I had no way to shoot it.
I have another video where I shot into in a few times but also show that it's been hit about 50 times. I waited until doing that video u til it had been tested and left out in the weather for a year. It's on my channel if you search backstop

They sure do stop an arrow well and are cheap to make.

It's easy to make works great and doesn't cost much money.
Glad to see you getting settled in. Hope the Wife and you find comfort in your new home.
Thanks! Tina is settled. I just got here today and fly out Wednesday morning for one more month of work in michigan. Then I'm down here fulltime
Jason, I use a folded used hot tub cover.
About 6 or 7 inches thick soaked polystyrene wrapped in vinyl
It's a 3 1/2 × 7 ft backstop that works great.
Brilliant recycling and reuse idea!
I built one this past weekend. Twice as big. They’re awesome. And great diy project
Yep and they don't look bad or out of place in a yard either. Clean simple and functional
Perfect timing on this. Was looking for a way to keep from losing arrows
It works fantastic. I have hit mine 5 or 6 times already shooting for 45 yards showing off for my neighbors 🤣🤣🤣

Excellent tips and ideas! Thank you for posting this! Cause hanging the whole mat was brutal hard to do by myself

Great idea! Thanks for sharing, I have one of those mats and they are extremely heavy.
Yep about 100 pounds! Was a pain to move a pain to hang etc.
Simple and cheap, i like it 👍
And super functional!
Awesome!
Glad you enjoyed it
Pretty cool idea.
Thanks
Awesome. Use Galvanize screws so they don’t rust
I did use coated deck screws and stainless steel washers
Thanks for sharing. When do you start hunting? I love your videos 😊

I need this!
Works great
If I have a crossbow that shoots at 400 fps, do you think this design would still work or would I need to double up the mats?
I bet it would still stop it.
Could you tell me, if I need 50 meters of hunting distance , what should be the weight of the arrow?
Thank you.

How does the mat handle a missed shot with a broadhead?
Never shot a broadhead at it. But will find out this winter when im down here fulltime and practicing more
Compound or trad? How is arrow removal?

Funny. I did the same thing. Works great and is cheap

best thing is don't miss... Says me, the dude who lost two Iron wills in five mins practicing with my broadheads
🤣🤣🤣 expensive practice seasion
No kidding right bro?!?!
I shoot 2"-3" groups to 50yds, this year lost 4 arrows at$40 per arrow.
Ouch!
Nice backstop
Thanks. It works excellent
That doesn’t break the arrows?
Not at all. It's rubber. The arrows stick into it an inch or 2 and that's it
