  • Shake N’ Bake (Arnold) McBride was one of the Philadelphia Phillies unsung heroes. His pivotal baseball performance, both in the regular season and in the 1980 World Series, were key reasons that the Phillies were able to bring a World Championship home to Philadelphia, for the first time in the Phillies’ 97 year history. Enjoy this retrospective on one of the greatest right fielders to play for the Phillies.

My Dad took me to the game where Bake hit the walkoff against the Expos. The fans stayed and kept chanting his name over and over, Bake! Bake! Bake! Eventually he came out for a curtain call and tipped his hat. The fans went crazy. Good times.

Excellent tribute to our hero Bake. When i think of Phillies' best right fielders, Bake and Glenn Wilson always come to mind.

To Philadelphia Baseball History Nice Video! I'm a Pirates fan but certainly didn't mind the Phillies and liked many of their guys, Maddox, McBride, Luzinski, Carlton, Schmidt, etc. Great video of Bake Too. I actually never knew what his voice sounded like. Now I do. Seems like a great humble guy. It's a shame it didn't work out when he went to the Indians. Think he had something with his eye and contact lenses. Bake was NL ROY in 1974 with St. Louis. Arnold Ray McBride is his real full name. Betcha knee this anyway lol 😆 but I'm happy to share. I subscribed to your channel too. Good luck to the Phillies

My dad was friends with Bake's dad, and coached Bake in little league 1 year. Bake went to Westminster College on a track scholarship and was talked into playing baseball there. My brother & sister went to high school with him, but I'm several years younger (I was 12y.o. when he was NL rookie of the year).

Thank you so much for the video! Anybody that says that they are a true Phillies fan takes a lot of Courage we are the opposite of front-runner fan unlike cowboy and Yankee fan a true Phillies fan takes a lot of courage and it takes a lot of heart we lose more than we win at our hearts are broken more than not. I was 12 years old in 1980 my dad who has never seen a championship was 53 at the time. I agree that most of the players 1980 we're not the most personable or approachable, but after 96 years they finally brought Pride to Philadelphia I embraced my dad October 21st that night that they won the championship and I seen tears in his eyes just like most lifelong Phillies fans for once they can hold their heads up high and say that we were champions of the world my dad who I love dearly long since passed away but that 1980 all that we went through through the expose the Astros and the Royals will always have a special place in my heart. The first in anything in life will always be the sweetest and the fact that we won the championship at Veterans Stadium made it all worthwhile that stadium that everybody loves to hate but it can never be denied that that turf that everybody complains about was the first to ever have Championship Champagnes spilled on it

The year Bake won NL rookie of the year, Fulton had 'Bake McBride Day' and my parents had a party at our house for Bake... A lot people were there, including Lou Brock & Ken Norton, Sr. (who also has family in Fulton) ....

I used to think of Bake as my imaginary uncle. One of my favorite players of all time!

When i was a kid, Bake's sister was my neighbor. Many of Bake's family were gifted athletes. If it weren't for the knee issue Bake might have had a hall of fame career. His career BA is .299, and he set the MLB record along with Lou Brock for most stolen bases in a season by teammates. Bake was a complete player. Great outfielder, could hit for average, hit for power and had great speed. For the life of me I'll never understand why my friends who root for the Cardinals never talk about Bake McBride. He was a fantastic player for the Cards and Phillies, but Bake's hometown of Fulton is only 100 miles West of St Louis. No mention of him around here anywhere. I'm happy for Phillies fans that he got to have that dream season of '80, he deserved it.

Ok, he never actually played for the Phillies, but a video about JD Drew, drafted by the Phillies, who refused to meet his bonus demands. So, he reenters the draft and is drafted by the Cardinals. He got a Philly welcome when he first played in Philly!

With all due respect to the late great Gary Carter, i remember disliking his style and attitude. There's competitiveness like with Pete Rose and Bowa, both of whom i love, but Gary was different. There seemed to be some unhinged anger with him that contrasts well in comparison to Bob Boone and Milt May. That was my view as a kid back in the day, not now. But the notion still resonates with me when i see Gary in action today in repeats.
