I got a detached Retina. 03/23/23 is when i went in for Surgery, two days after I was diagnosed. I have the gas bubble in my eye. We'll see how I am 2 months from post surgery. Important; soon as I noticed something was wrong, i went in to see a Retina specialist.
Hello. I am a 72 year old healthy guy who had cataract surgery performed on my right eye 2 years ago. Since then, I have developed spider web like floaters in that eye and it can be distracting, especially when driving. They can appear in the extreme right of my peripheral vision, causing me to think someone (or something) may be approaching me from the right. It can be more than distracting as you might imagine while behind the wheel of a car. My eye doctor and I discussed the situation a year ago and he advised waiting a while to see if they lessened or were absorbed. They haven't, and I see my eye doctor again next month. I am leaning towards have the floater only vitrectomy performed but naturally have to consider potential risks. My eye doctor was trained at Johns Hopkins Hospital and knows his craft well. Still, there is always that risk, no matter how small. Watching videos such as yours does aid me in my final decision. Thanks!
Hello josh. Thanks for your comments 1 year after surgery. I have been living with the floaters since i was 15 years old. They have changed my life. (Need to wear sunglasses all the time, cannot work in an office because i cannot control the lighting, so i work from my basement at home, stopped playing sports and many more things i could mention). I have made intense research and seen alot of retina specialist over the years..including flying over the country to see another specialist. I have decided finally to have vitrectomy this year and my appointment is in 7 days. My question is this one: it is affecting me alot, but i dont know how bad compared to others living with it..i am complaining for nothing? when do you think it is bothersom enough to go for surgery? If you could help me in my thinking..Thanks in advance !
@@josephlandingjr.4927 thanks alot for your response. Is it because you couldn't see clearly the road/ blocking your view or because they were too much of a distraction that they became dangerous while driving? Thanks again for taking the time
@@josephlandingjr.4927 I would like to know as well - your left eye could always compensate for what you're right eye was blocking. Didn't you see the cars or was the floater heavily distracting?
hi joe. appreciate you sharing your experience. what has been your longer term experience with the vitrectomy a couple years in? really appreciate it.thank you
Hey Joseph, you mentioned that due to your young age the surgeon was not able to induce a PVD and therefore left the vitreous/hyaloid membrane on the surface of your retina. I am 23 years old and I had a vitrectomy for floaters about 2 years ago at this point. My surgeon also left the membrane on my retina due to my age. So, I mention this because I have noticed ever since my procedure, when I drink alcohol (which is a diuretic which can cause dehydration) , or when I get dehydrated from not drinking enough water, I notice that I get flashes of light in the eye I had a vitrectomy. I talked to my surgeon about this and he said that because the vitreous has mostly been removed, my eye is now filled with water and when I get dehydrated the water levels in my eye get lower which causes less pressure to be in my eye. The low pressure in the eye apparently allows the vitreous membrane to tug and pull on my retina, thus, causing the light flashing phenomenon that I have noticed. I have also noticed that high impact activity like running 1 or 2 miles causes the flashes of light to occur in the vitrectomized eye as well. I guess the high impact of running causes vibrations to travel through the body and when it reaches the eye I had surgery on, the vibrations cause the membrane to wiggle around and pull and tug on my retina. Anyways, I was wondering if you had also experienced anything like this and if there are any activities or things that you do that seem to linked to causing flashes in your operated eye. Please let me know whenever you have the time as I would greatly appreciate it, thanks.
Hey there, That's interesting. I haven't experienced anything like that, or perhaps I haven't noticed. I've had flashes in both of my eyes for years long before the surgery.
I am approved for it and looking forward to it over the next two or three months. and they say, once its replaced with saline solution, you never will have new floaters again. now, i did have cat surgery in the effected eye which i think caused it, but again, once the fluid is replaced, no more floaters.
Thank you for doing these videos. Quick Question: From the dates on the videos it looks like it's been a few years since your vitrectomy, any signs or development of cataracts? That is my biggest hesitation with a vitrectomy. Thanks.
I am really pleased for you as I’m awaiting for a Vitrectomy soon for dense Asteroid Hyalosis and my vision is bad due to all the large floaters I have which blur what I see. You give me hope. Thanks.
I have swelling in my jaws due to infected wisdom teeth, the swelling was pressing on arteries going towards my eyes. The pressure on those arteries were higher whenever I slept and would wake up with more floaters each day and flashes. Another symptom when the blood supply was low that my eyes got droopy. Now that the infection in my jaw is cured, the flashes have gone away and I will have to live with the floaters. I wish I had found that issue sooner then later, nonetheless, I don't wake up with new floaters anymore. The pattern of floaters were also more to the left of each eye and more prominent in the left eye, and that's how I was able to find out the vascular occlusion.
Hi Joseph thanks a ton for the helpful videos - I just had my FOV a week ago. Few quick questions 1) How long did it take for your visual acuity / focusing ability to come back fully? 2) How long did the nighttime glare that you mentioned in an earlier video to clear up?
Happy your eye surgery went well. What are the chances for cataracts? i consulted once with a retinal specialist and he said 50-50 chance of developing cataracts in the future. Is that what your doctor told you?
congrats, first off! as for the flashes... anything visual snow-related? I've had floaters get worse over the last 3 years but then noticed the snow more and more, and the flashes in folks go together with that sometimes, so was just wondering :)
My floaters, many day's I can livewith them, even the big one in my line of vision. It's the flashes when I'm in dim lighting or dark, that drives me the craziest!
You mentioned in the old video that they did not induce a PVD. I had a retina specialist inform me I would get floaters again if I had the Vitrectomy and you mentioned in your first video that you are aware you will get more as yours continue to detach. Are you concerned about this reality?
My surgeon tugged on the Posterior Vitreous but it wouldn't budget, due to my young age. Forcing a PVD would likely cause Retinal Detachment. It's possible I develop floaters down the road, but they won't be as bad as what I had.
Great summary. Did you have any lingering pain after the surgery and how long did it last? You mention no cataract development yet, but if possible please update this feed if it does happen. All indications are this will happen within 1-2 years although you are so young that may be a longer horizon. Thanks.
Hi Joseph! Thank you so much for this video. May I ask about the flashes? Do you notice them when you move your eye/ head quickly, like if you turn around fast? Or does it happen randomly? Thank you
Thank you for sharing your experience in detail. It helps others, like me, who are considering the procedure. I would like to ask one question. Does your eye feel the same as before surgery? Apart from leftover red blood/floater that you have. I read from someone that his/her eye felt weaker after the surgery.
Thanks vm Joseph. Very helpful. I just had a cataract surgery with iol implant and 1.5 month later my left eye developed large floater near retina central vision and small one further with possibly vitreous membrane which I gather is PVD, and 1 month after the right eye followed. So I am contemplating a FOV and your info and vdo helps a lot in aiding my decision. Thank you again and I hope you continue to enjoy your successful operation.
I just want to report to you that I had my floater only vitrectomy in both eyes with a very experienced doctor in Bangkok who did my cararact surgery and IOL implant. The floaters appeared in both eyes within 1 month post iol implant and 1 month apart from the other eye . The operation was very successful and the healing was even better than cataract surgery. Thanks for your vdo that gave me encouragement to do it. 🙏🙏
Hi Joseph. I will need a vitrectomy due to a retinal thrombosis. I saw your 3-month and 1 year video, but didn’t catch where you said when you started to drive again. And how long before it was comfortable to look at computer screens etc. Thanks for answering if you don’t mind. Cheers from Brussels Belgium 🇧🇪
Hello! I honestly don't recall exactly when I started driving again, but it was definitely not more than a week after. Computer screens probably a couple days. Good luck!
Hey, first of all, congrats man. You’re living my dream currently. Second of all, I know you’re young so, I wanna know how hesitant your doctor was to do this on you? Did it take a lot of convincing or did he understand your plight immediately and do it? I’m 18, obviously a little younger, and have been trying to get the vitrectomy done from 3 different surgeons who all basically told me they don’t feel comfortable operating on me because of how young I am. Just curious to see how that process was for you, cheers
It took a fair amount of convincing. At no point, did he want to do the surgery. Even flat out saying so. But I explained to him in excruciating detail my plight and he agreed to do it. I also agreed to give it months of time to think it over. When I came back after 6 months even more desperate, he agreed.
Just had a fov on my left eye after a pvd. I’m only ten days in but I’m still seeing a fairly dark and long chain floater. Any ideas if this is likely to shift or is this one the surgeon didn’t manage to get. Eyesight definitely improved though but hope something can be done about this straggler.
I recall one big dark floater I had initially that went away after a couple weeks. My doctor told me it was likely blood. I also had the horseshoe. All went away in time. Best wishes for you.
@@josephlandingjr.4927 thank you for taking the time to reply Joseph. It is early days. So glad I had the procedure done, I actually thought I was going mad post PVD. In the UK the NHS don’t to my knowledge offer vitrectomy so I had to go private. It’s such a debilitating condition that without the vitrectomy I thought I’d have to give up working. Thanks for all your information and helpful content.
Yes in the one eye which had the vitrectomy (left eye). My right eye vision is poor (I’m practically monocular) and that has a number of floaters however, I’m conscious of these but they don’t impact my overall vision, this mainly due to the dominance of my left eye. I think at some point I may need a cataract op in my right eye but for now all is well overall.
Surgeon tried to induce but it was stuck fast so he opted not to. We discussed this before the surgery and he was like "I'm not going to tear your retina open trying to get it off. If it's stubborn, I'll leave it."
Hello there! I am male, 31 from Germany, suffering by the floater. I had mononucleosis in 2017 and since than i am getting weird symptoms. I would like to ask you some questions. Maybe you already did a vid for that. Is there something Special about you? Do you have problems with your blood vessels or symptoms by it eg numbness in hands, feet? Cold feet or hands? Did you have an infect (maybe even with hospitalisation?)? Are you snoring at night? Do you have Stress, hurting neck and shoulders? Do you have fat stool (swimming in Water)? I did my own research, developed mecfs After that infection 2017 and think I got problems with microclots in my blood vessels. There is therapy called help apheresis. Ever heard of that before? Thank you so much for your open handling with These floater!
Hey there hope you are doing well. As I had stated before I also had a core vitrectomy since my surgeon attempted a PVD but was unable to do so due to the tight attachment to retina and did not want to risk a tear. Did your doctor advise you if a PVD would occur quicker than normal in the future due to the surgery? Mine said could be 6 months or 20 years. Also did you get a potential timeline for cataracts formation? Mine again have a very wide timeline on that as well. Just wanted to compare. Hope to hear what you were told.
Nice to meet you. I am 25 years old and Japanese. I am not good at English, but let me ask you a question. I also had a vitrectomy to remove my flying mosquito. By the way, it is lens preservation. My vision became beautiful right after the surgery. However, after a few months, I started to see black vertical lines at the edge of my vision. It does not jump around in my vision like flying mosquitoes. It is fixed at the edge of my vision and moving in that spot. Does joseph have any such symptoms?
Hi. I was wondering if you’ve since developed a cataract and/or what your surgeon has said about that possibility? The retinal surgeon I’ve seen has said I’d be “almost guaranteed” to get a cataract from a vitrectomy 🤷🏻♂️
Hi there, I am planning to have fov operation and my operation date is in 3 days. I would be grateful if you read this message and answer it. My question is related to scleral depression and shaving of the peripheral areas. Does your surgeon shave these areas and does you see frill after the operation?
@@josephlandingjr.4927 Thank you very much for your kind answer my dear friend, another question I had, was your operation with pvd induced or not and what percentage of the vitreous was removed? and how is youre cataract development after the operation?
Really sucks that this surgery is not worth it at all if you just have a few small floaters considering your side effects. What supplements did you try before you got the surgery? I assume nothing helped

Hey there! I hit 20/20 on the eye chart one week exactly from the surgery. However, my vision was still full of all kinds of mess. It was weeks after until it really cleaned up. And honestly a few months until all the blood was mostly gone. This is all detailed in the various videos I've put out. Best of luck with your recovery!

Thank you for the video. This information was very helpful.
Thank you for the update. I've been kicking around the idea of a vitrectomy for years. I'm afraid the doctor I have picked out will retire and I'll be back to square one.
Best of luck! The good news is that the surgery is slowing being more accepted amongst surgeons.
Cataract is beneficial to those who is highly myopic. Along with cataract there no. Is also corrected. However new hydrogel with encoated antioxidant is anwser to all problem.

Best of luck! Please do your research and be seen by a retinal specialist if you haven't already.
Did you do vitrectomy?
I got a detached Retina. 03/23/23 is when i went in for Surgery, two days after I was diagnosed. I have the gas bubble in my eye. We'll see how I am 2 months from post surgery.
Important; soon as I noticed something was wrong, i went in to see a Retina specialist.
Como está hoje?
Hello.
I am a 72 year old healthy guy who had cataract surgery performed on my right eye 2 years ago.
Since then, I have developed spider web like floaters in that eye and it can be distracting, especially when driving.
They can appear in the extreme right of my peripheral vision, causing me to think someone (or something) may be approaching me from
the right.
Thanks!
Best of luck!
It's ok not to drive at 72
Hello, I waited until I could barely drive. Best of luck and please listen to your doctors.

@@josephlandingjr.4927 thanks alot joseph!
hi joe. appreciate you sharing your experience. what has been your longer term experience with the vitrectomy a couple years in? really appreciate it.thank you
Hey Joseph, you mentioned that due to your young age the surgeon was not able to induce a PVD and therefore left the vitreous/hyaloid membrane on the surface of your retina.
Hey there,
That's interesting. I haven't experienced anything like that, or perhaps I haven't noticed. I've had flashes in both of my eyes for years long before the surgery.
@@josephlandingjr.4927thanks for the quick reply; may I ask how regularly you experience the flashes?
THANK YOU for this testimony. Do you really feel that technology will continue to advance towards better and less risky treatments? I hope it does.
Medicine is always improving!
I am approved for it and looking forward to it over the next two or three months. and they say, once its replaced with saline solution, you never will have new floaters again. now, i did have cat surgery in the effected eye which i think caused it, but again, once the fluid is replaced, no more floaters.
Hello how old are you if you don’t mind me asking?
Thank you for doing these videos. Quick Question: From the dates on the videos it looks like it's been a few years since your vitrectomy, any signs or development of cataracts? That is my biggest hesitation with a vitrectomy. Thanks.
Hey there, nothing yet!
I am really pleased for you as I’m awaiting for a Vitrectomy soon for dense Asteroid Hyalosis and my vision is bad due to all the large floaters I have which blur what I see. You give me hope. Thanks.
Did you do vitrectomy?
Very very congratulations ❤
thanks for your story
How old are you?
25
Hi Joseph thanks a ton for the helpful videos - I just had my FOV a week ago. Few quick questions 1) How long did it take for your visual acuity / focusing ability to come back fully? 2) How long did the nighttime glare that you mentioned in an earlier video to clear up?
Did your floaters go and how old are you
Where did you get your surgery done?
Happy your eye surgery went well. What are the chances for cataracts? i consulted once with a retinal specialist and he said 50-50 chance of developing cataracts in the future. Is that what your doctor told you?
congrats, first off! as for the flashes... anything visual snow-related? I've had floaters get worse over the last 3 years but then noticed the snow more and more, and the flashes in folks go together with that sometimes, so was just wondering :)
I dont know much about visual snow besides it being a neurological condition. I'm not even sure if the eye has any impact on it.
My floaters, many day's I can livewith them, even the big one in my line of vision. It's the flashes when I'm in dim lighting or dark, that drives me the craziest!
@@josephlandingjr.4927 HELLO . DID YOU HAVE MUCH FLOATERS ?
How have you been ? Any problem since surgery? Cheers from Southamerica
@@josephlandingjr.4927 cool to know, and that's good you had a surgeon who didn't press his luck. Do a two year update!
Thank you
More random, both eyes. Had em since forever

Have you experienced any type of “frill” in the periphery of your vision with the limited vitrectomy?
No Frill
Thank you for sharing your experience in detail. It helps others, like me, who are considering the procedure. I would like to ask one question. Does your eye feel the same as before surgery? Apart from leftover red blood/floater that you have. I read from someone that his/her eye felt weaker after the surgery.
Eye doesnt feel any different. Though I am more careful with it, like when rubbing an itch.

Hi Joseph.. how was your surgery? do you have any videos detailing the surgery, the healing time and process?

I recall one big dark floater I had initially that went away after a couple weeks. My doctor told me it was likely blood. I also had the horseshoe. All went away in time. Best wishes for you.
@@josephlandingjr.4927 thank you for taking the time to reply Joseph. It is early days. So glad I had the procedure done, I actually thought I was going mad post PVD. Hi, did your floaters go in time?
Yes in the one eye which had the vitrectomy (left eye). My right eye vision is poor (I’m practically monocular) and that has a number of floaters however, I’m conscious of these but they don’t impact my overall vision, this mainly due to the dominance of my left eye.
I think at some point I may need a cataract op in my right eye but for now all is well overall.
Hello Joseph, did you get a Induced PVD vitrectomy
Surgeon tried to induce but it was stuck fast so he opted not to. We discussed this before the surgery and he was like "I'm not going to tear your retina open trying to get it off. If it's stubborn, I'll leave it."

Joseph could you provide a vivid detail your doctor?

Nice to meet you. I am 25 years old and Japanese. I am not good at English, but let me ask you a question. I also had a vitrectomy to remove my flying mosquito. By the way, it is lens preservation. My vision became beautiful right after the surgery. However, after a few months, I started to see black vertical lines at the edge of my vision. It does not jump around in my vision like flying mosquitoes. It is fixed at the edge of my vision and moving in that spot. Does joseph have any such symptoms?
Seems very similar to the residual blood from the surgery I had
Seems like the “frill” people talk about. That’s the edge of your vitreous where the surgeon stopped cutting

What physical limitations did you have and for how long after your surgery? When were you able to get back to normal activities.
