I didn't mention it in this video but of course the smoother the action the easier...You can take a new knife thats a bit stiff and take it apart and polish the pivot area to make it smoother out of the box but its easier for most people to just add oil to the pivot when new...
I use my pinky and ring finger to hold the knife near or by the clip but still keep my pointer like yours
Spydieflick, Spydiedrop 😉👌
Love your vids Jeff!
I usually have bio-gel synthetic Mag-Lev bearings installed on all my axial rotary needs. makes for fluid movement.
I just can not do that. I have tried and tried .
I was 68 years old when I first tried this and couldn't do it. I started exercising my fingers to strengthen them and after a couple months I mastered it. The Tenacious is the easiest to practice on but I can do this with all Spydercos even the stiff lock backs. Good video, Jeff.
Hey, I can do it on my Tenacious but not my para 3. What tips can you give to transition to the smaller knives?
@@Glockodile Exercise your fingers especially you middle finger. You know how to flick your index finger when you jokingly flicked somebody's ear? Practice flicking your middle finger as if you were going to flick a wad of paper off the table or flick someone's ear. When flicking the knife, position the tip of your index finger on the pivot screw on back of knife. Have your thumb cross the front of the knife an extend just below the Spydie hole. Practice until you can do it just once and in a short time you will do it without thinking.
Nice.
@@Glockodile weird. I had trouble with my tenacious but my Para 3 sails open anytime. Try lubing the pivot. Don’t overdo it, a drop or two will do.
@@TechZACH16 I got it, it was my technique not the knife.
Jeff, I’ve been watching your videos off and on for probably close to 8 years and still loving them. Keep it up! Thanks for what you do man.
Just scrolled back through some videos and I’m gonna bet that number is closer to 10 years than 8
I just now subscribed.
I was never a huge Spyderco fan but I bought a tenacious, then I was unexplainably pissed because I couldn't do the Spyderco flick. NOW, thanks to you I can, and don't need to spend hundreds of dollars on new Spydercos! 😆
I just bought my first Spyderco - a Tenacious. Of course I wanted to find out how to flick it. Thank you very much for the explanation - now it works. 👍
On a tenacious you may want to lube it to get reliable flicks. Even with good form I had some trouble until I put tuf-glide in the pivot. Your mileage may vary.
Wow, I've been trying to figure this out on my own with my Manix 2 for a couple of days now. I watched your video and boom 2 tries in I'm nailing the Spyder flick consistently. Thanks!
im very glad to hear that this is why I made the video :)
I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes the thumb, it is just so much more universal across knives...
You are very good at explaining it. I was sitting there 30 minutes trying to figure it out after watching a video. I did my first time. the way you grip it completely matters
for the drop, I use my thumb and the second knuckle of the index finger. I don't do the first swing instead I start with the drop and transition into the grip.
I've found that by using this variation I can pop the knife open in any direction, for instance at work yesterday a coworker needed a knife so I popped the knife open upwards and handed it to him handle first while I retained control of the blade.
After getting a tenacious, my first spyderco knife, I wanted to try this and after a couple minutes of trying and adjusting my thumb position, I can do it pretty easily now without fiddling too much before doing it.
Thanks for this video, Jeff :)
Thank you, thank you. Got my first nice knife today (spyderco paramilitary 2) and been messing around all day trying to do this. After watching you do it a few times I can do it like a pro now
Finally had to look this up. Took about a minute to get it down. Feels good!
The Spyderdrop looks badass when you get smooth with it 🔥🔥😮💨
Great instruction! I got it after a short while. The SpyderFlick that is. Haven't done the SpyderDrop yet. Thank you!
I know this is an old video but I'm glad I watched it. I just got my first Spyderco (Shaman) a few weeks ago and couldn't figure it out. I thought maybe it was too heavy.. but nope. Thanks to this video it only took me 2-3 trys and now I can get it every time. Thanks!
Just got my a spyderco para3 light weight and this video helped alot! Thank you!
Best tutorial ever, cheers buddy!
A natural teacher, cool vid.
Thank you Jeff, just by the positioning of the knife in hand tip helped me flick right away👍🏼
I don't even need to use the nail. I use the tip of my finger right in front of the nail. I can also flick with every finger 😂
Lots of annoying fidgeting I'm sure lol
Great job! I have been trying for a few day and couldn't get it to fully deploy without also flicking my wrist. Half way thru your video i was doing it every time thanks for taking the time to make this video.
I am glad that your title acknowledges that it's the "cool" way... That's the only reason to use this method, so that you can establish oneself as an elite knife person and look cool to their friends... Of course, once everyone is doing it this way, the "cool kids" will have to come up with something else that is different, so that they can tell people how they are different and again be cool...
And so the cycle of the knife nerd continues... :-)
This just came naturally to me
Its the 5-0 yea same here
Oiled and broken in i was able to get the gerber flatiron to the point it could be flicked open with the middle finger after some practice
I just learned on the flatiron as well
if you're someone that enjoys the theater of adding plenty of wrist to your flicks, you'll find the spider drop can get even better acoustic 'thwacks' because of the greater mass that is moving compared to a middle-finger flick
So glad u had this lol spent 2 hours trying before i gave up and came here
Great job explaining. Just figured out how to flick it consistently tonight.
Just got the limited edition knifeworks Delica today. Tried the middle finger click and failed like 30 times. Then I found this video... And got it first try with this method. Thanks!
I'll need a lot of practice on this one. I'm use to flicking my middle finger with the rest bent into a fist. Usually when I'm driving. :)
Lol same
Leave it to Jeff to help me figure this one out!
Can’t believe I’ve been watching your videos since I was given my first Zippo when I was 13 and now I’m almost 30 years old…
Thanks for the info. I always wondered how the hell everyone did the spydie flip.
This is true man, it’s seems like it should be really easy but the first time I tried it I couldn’t get it right, but with enough practice it’s natural to me now.
I'm sat here with an Endura with a wave, practicing this, and it occurs to me I'll never open the knife like this.
It's easy once you get the hang of it, i didn't think i would get it either when i first tried, now it's effortless.
The trick is not to actually try to flick the blade, just push towards the top of the handle & let the build up of pressure pop the blade open.
Mitchell Gardner can you eventually spider flick with an Endura, I’m thinking about getting that model
You can't middle finger flick back lock knives. Maybe if you had really long, strong fingers.
Couldnt get it till ur video...thanks!
I've been trying to do the spydieflick for days! Watched your video and 10 seconds in I can do it!
I actually always anchor all of my other fingers on the knife scales/handle; it just works better for me personally.
sweet, thanks for keeping faithful with the uploads
:) posting at least one video a day for 10 years strong now lol...
@@cutlerylover brother this guy john arnold with new account jinjer666 is harrassing the veiwers hes perpetually bored douch bag
Thanks, nice tutorial.
Just got my first spyderco thanks for the how to 👍
Hi Jeff, just saw "your" BladeHQ Vic Classic on knife banter, very cool!
thanks :) Ill make a video on it as soon as its available
I think the Cutlerylover SAK should have a cigar cutter and bottle opener. Just a suggestion. 🍻
@@cutlerylover have you ever seen a kit like this ? epragueknives.com/xxl-kinryu-survival-folding-knife-pliers-hex-screwdriver-socket-multi-tool-kit/
Thanks for the sharing! For me the euraka moment came to me at 3:19. Thank you again!
Thanks, this helped a lot!
Thanks man! Good tips.
how hard would it be to do this with the dragonfly?
I've always done the spider drop and didn't know it was a thing. It was always the fastest/easiest way for me to open these knives.
Esp with big blades like the Police...
What's the spider drop?
Any tips doing this on the resilience? Can't get the right grip one handed to flick open all the way. And I have big hands..
This may sound dumb but I actually have a bigger issue engaging the compression lock consistently without completely changing my hand position than flicking the knife open. Makes me wish I would have went for a manix
The other thing that can help is using your pinky and ring finger to grip the pocket clip. Also back locks are difficult to spydie-flick, it can be done but it'll be hard for someone just learning, so the delica, endura etc.
yeah theres more resistance with lockbacks
Just got my first dpyderco
Sitting in front of the TV for hours . Practicing the flips , flicks and reverse flicks will get yout here ! It will also make everybody very annoyed ! ( Talking from experience here) Thanks for the vid.
patrick vanovermeeren My girlfriend hates it. Which sometimes makes it more gratifying.
Very helpful!!!
Thank you!
Dude thanks a bunch!! I eat crayons..... and this was SAT difficult until you broke it down with the grip! I Subbed 🤝
does the knife have to be worn in first?
How did you get your blade to be that loose
Cool, I don't own any spyderco knives, but I always wondered how that was done
great video thank you for showing! I did one also of the cool ways to open these knives. So fun!
I love Spyderco knives!! I prefer thumb deployment!
Thanks for making this!
So I can't seem to get it down on my para 3. On my tenacious I can do it fine but my para 3 I just cant get it. Any tips for this smaller knife?
i cant get enough pressure to flick it open what should I do?
Can you do it on a Byrd spyderco cause i cant the hole is differnt
What about on the Delica 4 is it possible?
Thanks. Now I know how to do the flip. I also prefer the thumb though
Thanks Jeff, I've always wanted to know how to spydie-flick.
Interesting tip. Ill hve to try it.
First time seeing this, thanks 👍
Ganzo G732 . try and got it !
I've been doing the spydie drop with the delica 4 stainless for awhile. Otherwise I flick it out with my thumb. When I first got it I tried using my pointer finger (never tried my middle finger) but I gave up on that when it cut open my skin a bit after playing with it for a while.
Picked up a Delica 4 and I can't put this thing open no matter what I do. How is your Delica 4 doing now?
Whats the non spyderco knife ?
I have the UKPK but this knife clicks half way (back stop) for safety. hence these flick moves don't seem to work at all with this UK model.
i do it with my pointer finger. if i use my middle finger, i'd have to shift my grip when opening it and shift my hand back after the blade's out 'n locked.
This was hard for me at first. Now it is natural. I’ve tried before to see how hard I could flick it. I flicked one of mine so hard so many times that the steel cracked.
Thank you Jeffy, I'm going to try later today 👍🗡💙
Bro i don't even have a modern Spyderco (I have a copilot all Stainless steel to what i know is from the 80's) but those two tricks are dinamite... Gotta get me a new Spyderco just to try those.
Subbed.
Don't know if it's psychological or what, but I have an easier time deploying any knife when I'm standing versus sitting.
Thank you, my Delica simply refuses to flick open in any way. I always have to finish the flick with a second effort somehow
What's the point of fiddling around with an edc. In my world I open the blade and cut up stuff multiple times a day. Most times I just press a button on my autos. That's my preferred way.screw all that Spiderco drama
its a bit harder to do on a Lock Back knife hahaha. but if you can do it, you'll be able to do it in any Spyderco
i learned doing spydieflick on a knife with a thumb-stud
Please!!! Review the Paramilitary 3 Lightweight!!!!🙏🙏🙏🙏
Hey great video/ thanks for the detailed explanation. I to am now a spyderco flicker. Lol
You should have done it with the flatiron.
Slightly loosening the pivot can make a lot easier
Haha us lefties have been doing that trick forever
What the the fuck i was doing this so wrong lmao I kept noticing that how peoples fingers were always all out and when I did it I was actually flicking with my middle finger but also moving the knife at thr same time to help it open pretty cool way to do it awesome vid
The fact that it scrapes your nail and leaves a white residues around the hole really bother me.
Not everyone does this with spydercos?
5:17
I wish there was a video on how to thumb flick open my espada xl like Jeff did in a video, it seems impossible.
keep your hand up close to the thumbplate so your thumb is completely bent it gives you more power flicking the thumb, also with BIG blades like that I like to open them by flicking downwards and stopping the momentum lets the blade drop and swing up since its so heavy...I think I had a video on this before
@@cutlerylover cool, thanks!
@@trecdismith916 sure no problem :)
Exclude all Spyderco back locks & slip joints!
Thanks it useful but I have another Spyderco knife is too big so I can’t use my middle finger to make it . Anyway thank this video
I didn’t get frustrated, however I did cut my finger wide-open so now I use my thumb...
I broke the tip on mine
I cut myself twice trying to do this. I got the blade half way and quickly tried to close it but it hit my finger and I didn’t know it cut me until I seen blood drip out. I think I’ll stick with thumb opening for awhile. Never owned a Spyderco until now
Just got my first knife. Para 3 LW. I can thumb flick but can't spidey flick smh
Wait... I just finished the video and now I can do it haha thank you so much! Still prefer the thumb flick like you though
I can get it to about the 11 o'clock position (sometimes, not everytime) but no further. It won't lock into place. If I needed my knife for self-defense in a hurry I would be dead.☠
I spyderflick with my pointerfinger.
I also like doing this with my index finger
...and just like that, I"m one of cool kdz. Not really.. but I'm closer! 🤣
Idk about anyone else, but when I got my Para 3, I took it out of the box and Spydey flicked it within my first 3 tries.
Hate the Spydie flick. Have a good one!
