Very in depth, this answers a good bit of questions. Even with all of the research I have been doing I still find the best approach it to get advice and start testing to fine tune what works for yourself
I used to feel a MH fast was the best all around rod. Now Ive changed my mind to a MH moderate/fast as the best all a rounder. I can throw anything on it within reason. Having said that, though, Ive become addicted to rods and reels and cant stop buying specific rods for certain purposes...But if all I could have was one rod it would be a MH moderate/fast. By the way, get yourself a glass rod to try out, they are awesome for cranking. I love the soft actions on them. I have a St Croix Mojo Bass Glass (not that pricey..about $125) and I love this thing. Its fun hooking into a fish and your whole rod soaking it up
This comment is extremely late, but this is a video I have been looking for since I started bass fishing in 2020. I great breakdown.... thank you! Happy new year!
good advice the only thing i would add would be 7-7'6" xh for punchin heavy jigs through grass matts.you can also go on amazon look at the scott martin rods or the kastking royal legend rods they both list the rods power and length and what type of lure each was made for.even if you don't like the rods you have a visual you can copy for a reference
I am really happy you brought up how line stretch plays into the rod selection process. I feel that I can throw a completely different set of baits and presentations on the same rod, simply by spooling mono or flouro on a combo that had braid. Definitely something I use to my advantage since I use 5 combos to do everything.
I know this is an older video but I've had pretty decent success using MH/F for most of my stuff. I threw a whopper plopper 90 on a E6X 843 last year and caught tons of fish however looking back i noticed i missed some good fish for this lake because i was ripping the bait away from them with that fast tip. This year i'm using a crankbait rod for anything with a treble hook as i won't be ripping the hooks and bait away from the fish hitting at it.
Excellent information. Nice that you take the time to explain this. This is why I watch your videos because you explain it well and don't beat around the bush. Thanks
One of the best vids ive seen, got all the info I needed with out all the extra info. Was wondering what a good versatile rod for jerkbait/Small cranks/top water would be...now try to find a solid medium- moderate fast. Thanks man. Good video.
Great video very well broken down. I top like to have everything complex and organized, I'm slowly building up my arsenal. Wonderfully informative. You privide great evidence for your points. Tight lines!
Nice video , and great job of knowledge and presentation. The accuracy point caught my attention, being that I use a 5'6" berkley lightning rod medium heavy, casting spinnerbaits and for me I am by far more accurate with that set up because that's what I am use to. I have some 6'6" rods that I will only use worm or jig fishing because of better hook setting power. Is the short rods I use too short for some people . Yes. For me, No. Will not keep rambling on, but really enjoyed your video and your very good take on rods.
Never thought too much about it until I kept getting good little runs on a trick worm on a medium but the ones that felt better I just couldn't get a good hook set on em. Was weird, first time I ever had it happen but never really use that rod much except for smaller search baits sometimes like a trap or small underspin. Only caught 2 under 12" on this rod with that worm🤣 brand new hook so I know the hook wasn't the issue.
Great video. when you are talking lure weight do you take in any consideration for your bait modifications. like adding a plastic trailer to the 3/8 jig, or if you are using a heavy salt plastic with a 3/8 bullet sinker TX rig? some soft plastics themselves can add 1/4oz of weight to the lure (guessing, haven't actually weighted any soft plastics)
I think your dad is right, but i use a medium fast action most of the time every 5 + lb fish i ever caught came on 10lb or less line my biggest largemouth 8lb.s was on a 7' ml spinning rod with 6lb copolymer my biggest smallmouth 6lb 10 oz was on a medium 6'6" baitcaster with 10lb mono and that fish just about broke the pole in half
Yo nice tips TJ 👍! Hey man don't worry about the time bro lol not when u are given out some of the best tips for the new season 😀 just flow with it, u can't rush a man that a perfectionist. 👌 as always thanks for sharing your thoughts and tips bro much appreciate it... Oh I like to see u do a vid on showing how to flip and pitch and anything else you can show us actual on the water with casting this year. 😁👍👍
Great vid... You and Gene(Flukemaster) know your stuff. Thanks for the info on the rods. OBW... any thoughts on using red hooks...Someone told me fish cannot distinguish between red and black hooks in the water.....Again , well done and thanks for taking the time to explain this.....
+Joe Mitchell Thanks Joe!! As far as the hooks go, I'm a believer that it makes a difference as far as giving them more of a target to aim for...whether or not they can really distinguish, I have no idea, it's more of a confidence thing with me.
the biggest largemouth bass i will catch in my area is around 5lbs or less. I fish in southeast michigan and am looking for a good crankbait rod. I have it narrowed down to st croix 7.2" moderate action but cant decide whether to get medium or medium heavy, i could really use some advice on it im losing sleep over it lol
Hey bud, when I use a medium I'm usually stepping down to a lighter crankbait. Look at the weight specs on the rods and then look at the weights of the baits you like to toss.
hey dude great vid!. and hey do you ever think you could maybe do like a video on what type of gear to get as a young angler. i'm 15 so i don't necessarily make alot of income. i have 2 rods a flipping/frogging and an all around. i'm looking to get something else along with what type of gear to get for ponds and small lakes. would love to hear your input. thanks!
Good video n very informative, I just watched Gene's video n between the two I think I got the information that I was looking for. My setup is actually a combo by Shakespeare, it's the 7ft Surf/Pier rod my only concern about it is the reel is a 5.2:1 n I know that a lot of guys on here use a 7.3:1 or around there. But it came prespooled with 14lb mono, it's rare that I break the line unless I forget to check the knot but I don't catch any over 2lbs. Do u think that it's due to the size of line that I'm not getting the right action out of certain baits?
One of the lakes I fish in have some 4+lbers but I've been catching usually the one pounders the biggest one I caught out of it was a lil over 3lbs but I'm also a boatless angler so I'm limited to the areas of where I can get to.
About make a tackle warehouse order, I have baits in mind for summer. But what are you must have bait suggestions for summer?I like fishing ponds and lake for smallies and largemouths here in Illinois. +TackleJunky81
I would look around other places too like dicks sporting goods and basspro and cabelas, they all have a lot of the same stuff so you can save some money and get better deals.
+Auston Walton I'm a big spinner bait and square bill guy. I throw those all year. Summer time, 10" worms are great, creature baits, and tubes is another one that I always have tied on.
I have a crankbait rod and flipping rod but I need a rod for all the lures in between and I was wondering what ounces I should get and power I need. Thank you
I love to throw spinnerbaits and I throw the 3/8oz a lot, however there are times when I need to throw a 1/2oz bait. When I try to throw a 1/2oz spinnerbait on a medium heavy fast action rod with a 6.8:1 reel I feel as though my rod and reel are overwhelmed although the weight is well within the range of the rod. Should I try changing to a heavy rod or should I go to a 5:1 gear ratio reel?
+Nick Schneider What do you mean "overwhelmed?" A bigger spinnerbait with bigger blades will drag more. You still need to move it just as fast (or faster), so a slower reel will have to be cranked faster. If you mean overwhelmed on the cast, just adjust your casting action. You won't have to throw as hard for the same distance with the heavier bait. My spinnerbait rods are rated 1/4-3/4oz, and I'll throw stuff that's 5/8oz and 3/4oz on them no problem, but I don't snap the cast as much as with a 3/8oz spinnerbait/chatterbait.
+Sean more so on the retrieve. When I'm reeling in that half ounce spinnerbait it's very difficult and tiring. I think I should step down to a 5:1 gear ratio but before I ran off and spent money on a new reel I just wanted to make sure it's actually my reel that I need to address
Nick Schneider I've had the same problem...first time I threw a 1/2oz with a colorado blade. About wore me out. I'd say...what reel do you use? Save some money if you can and buy an oversized reel handle. That way you can keep the speed of the reel the same but have more power to turn it...and it'd be a lot cheaper.
Nick Schneider Here ya go...Lews Double Power Handle, $40 (instead of $100 for another LFS)...www.tacklewarehouse.com/Lews_Double_Power_Handle/descpage-DPL.html?from=w2fish
Nice guidelines. Please include the characteristics of co polymer line in your future line discussions. I typically change line prior to each tournament which can be expensive if you don't plan ahead. For me personally PLine floroclear co polymer line in the 3000 yard spools gives me the best price + performance / per yard. It makes changing line frequently less painful on the wallet.
+RDM1978 Hey Ronnie, if a compact size is important to you then go with the new CT, if not then the Tatula that was out last season is a great reel for the price.
+cluna81 I'm not really familiar with anchors man. I've had a couple that I've never even used. I actually just installed a PowerPole and that's what I'll be using.
Who makes that 6'8'' H frog rod you use? I fish from a wheelchair mostly and have been looking for a shorter frog rod. Used a 6'8'' mh last year but want something a little more stout.
Just bought an Abu Garcia Revo X 7' MH 7.1:1 combo and spooled it with 10lb PLine Floroclear copolymer line. I got it to use as a spinner bait/chatter bait rig. Am I correct on using it for that, or is there a better use for that setup?
With moving baits I prefer a 6 speed reel and usually 15lb test at a minimum for the baits you mentioned. Guys these days prefer faster reels though...personal preference, but I prefer the power of a slower reel.
Great video...appreciate time on this...I have used the same type ideas on different baits as you have...simply through experience and experiment...nice video...good content. L/S
+Fishing_Plague i feel like i dont need one as of right now, not much to flip into here (not heavy mats or grass etc) although it may help with all of the wood pilings on my lake. Ill see this summer if i need a heavy
+LadyBass Frogging with heavy braid and flipping. That's all I use it for. Everything else is either M or MH. Flipping docks even with a finesse jig I use a big heavy power rod just so I can yank them away from the pilings/cables.
Just subscribed, awesome videos and a ton of information. Thanks for taking the time to teach us weekend warriors lol. Here's my set ups and hoping you can say yes that's good or what I need to do. 2- 7' ML spinning rod with 15lb braid and floro. leaders using them for finesse type fishing (mojo, ned rigs and drop shot) 1 6'6" older MH Berkley glass lightening rod baitcaster with 12lb mono for top water stuff like Super Spooks, Whopper Ploppers, chatter baits. I'm looking at a 6-6 to 7ft MH bait cast rod/reel for frogs, Super Flukes and worms in heavy cover....how am I looking. MUCH appreciated for your input!!!!!!!!!! I'm fishing from a kayak if that helps, thanks
Looking good so far Jayme! You say heavy cover, if its pretty thick you may want to step up to a heavy, but a medium heavy is still a very versatile rod.
I ended up buying a St Croix MOJO BASS rod and a Lews Speed Spool LFS 7:5:1 and spooled 40lb braid to it. It's a super light set up but the rod seems to be on the heavy action side of power.
Last week, I just purchased a rod/reel combo dedicated to "cranking" - sqaurebills, crank baits, jerk baits, spinner baits and chatter baits I bought a G. Loomis E6X 845C CBR 7' M/H with mod/fast action rod with a Shimano Citica 200 6.4:1 bait caster with 15lb Seguar Fluorocarbon line Rod combo #2 is a 7' M/H Fast action Shimano Clarus with a Shimano Curado 50E (6.3:1 gear ratio) with 30 lb braid for top water Rod combo #3 is a 7' M/H Fast action Shimano Clarus with a Shimano Chronarch CI4+ (7.6:1 gear ratio) with 30 lb braid for jigs and texas rig Rod combos #4-#6 (finesse fishing) are 7' Medium or Medium Lite ALL Fast action with Shimano Sahara 3500 to 2500 reels; wither fluoro or braid
+Jonas Hamrah How do you like that GLoomis E6x Crankbait rod? I was checking out the medium moderate/fast E6x and it felt super soft...too soft. They didn't have the medium heavy crank rod but Im interested in it. How do you like it?
+mojo jojo I love the M/H mod/fast action. As you said, the Medium felt too soft for my liking. If you order the M/H you will not be disappointed, I PROMISE!!
Love the channel. This video is a little misleading though. There is NOT a standard on powers in between companies. Someone's medium will be stiffer than someone else's and vise versa all the way through the line. So the only way to get the rod you're really looking for is to use it.
+TackleJunky81 yeah I needed this cause I'm still a younger angler and don't have many rods only 4 I have to but my own things you know my dad and mom are separated so they both help sometimes but I mainly do it just helps me know what I need
Geez I barely have enough money to choose the right rod for each reel and you’re over here talking about choosing the right rod for each lure 😂. Great information though, I’ll save this for when I hit the lottery
Yikes... personally; going to another company's recommendations to fish certain lures/techniques is terrible advice. May be a ROUGH guide...but each and every (especially non Chinese junk ((Abu, 13...)) Put A LOT of research and knowledge into their actions. Not to piss anyone off-to each their own, but don't direct a person grabbing a shite rod and going to a rod builders recommendations with decades of experience and expect it to perform
Very in depth, this answers a good bit of questions. Even with all of the research I have been doing I still find the best approach it to get advice and start testing to fine tune what works for yourself
Glad I was able to help you out.

Couldn't agree more with your comment about having the right setup! I'm the same way I feel like fishing better with the right setup!
Thanks for watching bro!
What lakes do you usually fish over there? Have you ever fished over in Lake Shelbyville?
I haven't

What power would be best for a 1/15oz Ned rig? Thanks for the great video
It'll be different from one brand to the next, so just look at the specs on the rods.
Answered all my questions!! Thanks man!!
Chatterbaits? moving bait quickly, would it be a moderate fast?
+Hunter Chevaillier I've used both MF and F. I definitely like the MF better.
+Hunter Chevaillier Like I said in the video, some guys prefer a moderate fast, I like a fast with mono...but either will work.
Thank you for explaining this... it helped me out a lot!!

+Fishing_Plague i feel like i dont need one as of right now, not much to flip into here (not heavy mats or grass etc) although it may help with all of the wood pilings on my lake. Ill see this summer if i need a heavy
+LadyBass big swimbaits, frogs, punching ?
+Matthew Jones havent thrown big swimbaits, and my mh has gotten me through all of the other applications!
+LadyBass Frogging with heavy braid and flipping. That's all I use it for. Everything else is either M or MH. Flipping docks even with a finesse jig I use a big heavy power rod just so I can yank them away from the pilings/cables.
good video man. well explained.
+Graffiti Turtle Thank you!!
exactly what i was looking for. great man!
+Modern Day Sportsman Thank for watchin!!
Great info man!
+Alex Rudd Fishing Thanks Alex!!
You should do a rod and reel arsenal video when you get everything in
+Jesse Smith Will do Jesse
Just subscribed, awesome videos and a ton of information. Thanks for taking the time to teach us weekend warriors lol. Here's my set ups and hoping you can say yes that's good or what I need to do.
2- 7' ML spinning rod with 15lb braid and floro. leaders using them for finesse type fishing (mojo, ned rigs and drop shot)
1 6'6" older MH Berkley glass lightening rod baitcaster with 12lb mono for top water stuff like Super Spooks, Whopper Ploppers, chatter baits.
Great job! Right tool for the right job!
+Mark Polsky Thanks Mark!!
Great tips thanks
+Jose Martinez Thanks for watchin Jose!!
bro great video. super informative!
+Bass Stryker Outdoors Thanks Greg!!
Last week, I just purchased a rod/reel combo dedicated to "cranking" -
sqaurebills, crank baits, jerk baits, spinner baits and chatter baits
I bought a G. Loomis E6X 845C CBR 7' M/H with mod/fast action rod with a
Shimano Citica 200 6.4:1 bait caster with 15lb Seguar Fluorocarbon line
Rod combo #2 is a 7' M/H Fast action Shimano Clarus with a Shimano
Curado 50E (6.3:1 gear ratio) with 30 lb braid for top water
Rod combo #3 is a 7' M/H Fast action Shimano Clarus with a Shimano
Chronarch CI4+ (7.6:1 gear ratio) with 30 lb braid for jigs and texas
rig
Rod combos #4-#6 (finesse fishing) are 7' Medium or Medium Lite ALL Fast
action with Shimano Sahara 3500 to 2500 reels; wither fluoro or braid
+Jonas Hamrah
How do you like that GLoomis E6x Crankbait rod? I was checking out the medium moderate/fast E6x and it felt super soft...too soft. They didn't have the medium heavy crank rod but Im interested in it. How do you like it?
+mojo jojo I love the M/H mod/fast action. As you said, the Medium felt too soft for my liking. If you order the M/H you will not be disappointed, I PROMISE!!
+Jonas Hamrah Thanks: Im considering the E6X MH/moderate or the St Croix Avid MH/moderate.
Bravo man this is a great video!
+BassGeek Thanks bro!!
Awsome video my dude! Perfect
Thanks buddy!
my dad tells me the same thing. very informative thks
+Jeremy Mathis Thanks Jeremy!!
thanks for the info brotha
+Wesley Adams Thanks Wesley!!
what about what baitcaster to use for each lure ?
I have a couple different videos on gear ratios.
Which rod would you recommend to be an all purpose rod?
+Trey bingham For me a 7' MH is the rod that I use the most.
Jim, my head hurts from all this stuff! I'm with your dad! LOL! Actually I enjoyed this! It was very enlightening! Thanks for a great episode!
+Juanelo1946 LOL!! Appreciate the view buddy!! Thanks for watchin!
No 867 for you, Jim? lol .......It's my latest. Now saving for a reel for it. Handle could be a little shorter for me in the wheelchair.
+MrWheelchairPreacher LOL, thanks for watchin man!!
Great Video!
Awesome vid!
+ZYTHUM13 Thank you!!
Thank you for the video
+Michael Braico No problem Michael, thanks for watchin!!
Fluke master just did a video on this too
Great vid brother. Im an "all in" guy myself! lol With a few hobbies...it gets pricey for sure! lol Be well.
Thanks man!
Great video.
Thanks brother! 👊💪
Love the channel. This video is a little misleading though. There is NOT a standard on powers in between companies. Someone's medium will be stiffer than someone else's and vise versa all the way through the line. So the only way to get the rod you're really looking for is to use it.
+Casey Minshew Thanks Casey
Good video!
+iSlayBass Thanks for watchin!!
HELP, MY CAPS LOCK IS STUCK, DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!!!!
Preach brother preach!! 🎣💪🏽🍻🍻
👊💪
Sweet video
+Guy Link Thanks bro!!
+TackleJunky81 yeah I needed this cause I'm still a younger angler and don't have many rods only 4 I have to but my own things you know my dad and mom are separated so they both help sometimes but I mainly do it just helps me know what I need
What about frogs
For frogs I personally like a shorter rod, anywhere from a 6'8" to 7' Heavy.
Good stuff man! had me laughing quite a few times you really need to get out on the water and fish...
+Keifer's Reel Planet Bass thanks for watchin dude!!
excellent
+canatek Thank you!
Really like the info in the video, but depending on the rod company the
ratings on the rod vary. just makes it hard to pick a rod.
That is true.
👊🏾Excellent👊🏾
+CoAnglerMarv Thanks!!
You and I think so much alike. Thanks for the video. Helped me out alot. Probably because we were separated at birth!
My pleasure! 👊
