- Bread is one of the most basic staples, especially for us Singaporeans. A few decades ago, there were more than 200 traditional bakeries in Singapore, but today we are only left with a handful, mostly helmed by bakers from the older generation, who bake without the use of any preservatives-the old-school, traditional way.

After so many Food Guide videos with Mandon and Chiara, I am really shipping both of them! They have this 'uniquely cute' chemistry! You know like shy-shy but lowkey vibes really well with each other!
I like how Mandon is such a sucker for those traditional bakery pastries. I still buy all those featured cakes whenever I go past the old bakeries in the market! So nostalgic and good!

You guys totally missed out another bakery called Sin Hon Loong Bakery at 4 Whampoa Dr, Singapore 327715.
I called it the Bendemeer Road bread cause of the area.
Very old school and you can smell their bread from 1-2 blocks away. The sweetness in their plain bread is enough to not put any toppings and so fluffy. You guys should check it out.
Please check out big bakery at Tai Seng!! It’s very near to Jie bakery and is also a very very old school confectionary. The apple crumble there is to die for

YES!!! I have tried all 3!!
Jie has the best traditional plain bread (the round ones with the crust). Sembawang has the best cake (the butter cake is the best). Also have Sing Hon Loong at Whampoa apart from Sweetlands. Sin Hon Loong has the best coconut bun (their coconut is very fragrant and nicely sweetened). Sweetlands is better at their assorted buns. Each has their own specialties!
Am a self proclaimed bread lover, and have tried many types of traditional bread in Singapore. Hands down, 50 years bakery is the best in Singapore.

One is Sweetland, the other make bread for Yakun.

Sembawang Bakery...my childhood cake shop! Love their traditional cakes so much that I still go back often to buy. I cannot find a comparable one elsewhere, and it is sad that the uncle is already so old and still doing, and soon it will become a lost skill.

you know they are really YOUNG, when they say "the bakers wake up so early.. 6AM!!" (HUH?? 6am is early?? wow youngsters... ppl in market wake up at 3am and start work at 4am.. June Bakery workers come in at 3am to make cookies and tarts..)

Traditional Buns i remember is mainly 3 flavor.. Red Bean, Coconut, Kaya.
also i miss the good old PORK Luncheon Meat Buns.. Bakeries these days are all about HALAL.. and its all about Chicken Hot Dog buns... back then bakeries dun need to be halal..they sell to Chinese enough liao..i feel the BUSINESS need to go halal to sell to Muslim is causing pork luncheon meat buns and pork hot dog buns to be so rare... i do see some shops still have it. but out of every 10 bakery shops probably only 2 has pork hot dog buns..
the pork hot dog are much softer. while the chicken hot dog buns are more firm and hard.. and the color of the pork hotdogs is more pale and while the chicken hotdogs are darker in color.. from added colorings..to make them look like hotdogs.
