What a wonderful gem! Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful time capsule from a proper ship. In my own humble opinion, there isn't a ship afloat (outside of the Queen Mary) that could hold a candle to the graceful lines and beauty of the RMS Olympic in her heyday. Today's ocean liners and cruise ships look more like some Las Vegas hotel that was accidentally tipped over into the water and forgot to sink, LOL!
The olympic wasn’t designed as a cruise ship. Her luxurious interiors were constructed and fitted by H&W in Belfast. Each every cabin was decorated in a particular style ( Louis xv, Georgian, Regency ect) each cabin in 1st stated which style the cabin was above the door in brass. Now as much as these ships seem so elegant and beautiful to us today. To anyone with taste they would have seemed flash and over done much like the modern cruise ship.
Modern cruise ships are mass tourism industry creations. The idea is to cram as many paying people as possible onboard them. And most of these people don't care much about how these ships look on the outside. I mean, the Norwegian Epic is, in my opinion, the ugliest of them all, and it still hasn't any problem to get passengers. Unfortunately, we, ocean liner enthusiasts, are in a minority. It was the oil crisis in the early 1970's that finally killed the traditional ocean liner service. Genuine ocean liners like the SS France and the Italian sisters SS Michelangelo and SS Raffaello were laid up after only a decade long career. Some of the liners that were built as hybrids (ocean liner suitable for cruises), like the SS Rotterdam and the SS Canberra, got a long career. The SS France indeed got a long career as SS Norway, but they also increased her inner space and made her more "top-heavy". Cunard also made the QE2 more top-heavy to be competitive in the modern cruise market. The QM2 is technically a proper ocean liner, actually the only one in service today but in my opinion she looks too fat.
I really love this video. The Titanic and Olympic were nearly identical, so even though this is Olympic, it's like were getting a closer look at Titanic.
The Olympic and the Titanic were nearly identical, but they have obvious differences. The Olympic was the basic model of the Olympic class, and the other two ships were an improved version of the previous ship. The Titanic for example delete the B Deck promenade to get more cabins and the two Parlot Suite, plus a bigger Restaurant A La Carte and the Cafe Parisian, wich was only on the Titanic. Also, the A deck promenade was improved with a closed seccion with windows and a door, that prevents the sea breeze from passing, and the Olympic didn't have such thing. The Brittanic by the way makes even more changes. After the Titanic disaster, the new Brittanic gets improved with a doble hall and double bottom, and a totally different interior (unfortunally there aren't photos availeble).
Curt Wakeman there is not a pice of good evidence saying the ships were switched. The theory has been debunked numerous times and I debunked it myself within an evening.
It's sad if you think that all the things you can see in this video were new on Titanic when she sank, and if you think about all the Titanic passengers which were happy like those on the video, and their happiness and life had been pulled away from them!
This has to be the most challenging public relations project of all time -- selling the "fun" on the Titanic's and Britannic's sister ship, the only one not at the bottom of the ocean..
Not really, Olympic was pretty popular in the 20's despite Titanic sinking. Olympic really only suffered a drop in passenger numbers for a few months after Titanic sank, but she recovered quickly.
@@lellius true, "boats for all" but on Titanic, they did not have enough time to even launch all the boats they had...2 remained un-launched as Titanic went under the waves at 2:20....they could have had 100 boats more, and yet few more people would have survived
What a treat to see these priceless scenes! Capt. Hayes on the bridge (and you can see that the inner wheelhouse has a flat front--I had thought it was curved)...the kids on the exercise bikes (and how unchanged some of the rowing machines are even today!)...and love the kitchen bits. Good show!
Instead of calling her the Old Reliable, the nick name given to her by the troops sailing aboard her during the Great War, I love calling her with which the beloved ship was much recognised and best remembered in her later years, 'THE SHIP MAGNIFICENT'.. She truly was..

This is incredible. It's the exact same as the titanic barely any difference at all besides the name and a few other things. If only we could see this ship in real life today argghh
The ship's fittings and interiors were auctioned off and some still survive to this day. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Swan_Hotel,_Alnwick Also, you've got to remember this was the 30s, the height of the great depression. Titanic was just not talked about back then as she was seen as a failure and an embarrassment so there was no nostalgia about her or other ships until the jet age started to make the mode of transport obsolete. She was also relatively old (though she probably still had a good 10 years more in her) and was outclassed by more modern ships. In the 30s she was not drawing passengers and failing to meet her own running costs. To her owners her only value was as scrap metal at that point.
It’s sad that most people talk about the Titanic a lot, and barely any people talk about the bigger sister the Britannic and the older sister Olympic. We should all know the Olympic class liners, not just the titanic, and we should some respect to not only to the Titanic, but some to the Olympic and the Britannic, and the people who died on the Britannic.
A wonderful glimpse of the age of the true liners. Today's ships can never truly compare to such liners as 'Olympic', 'Mauretania' or 'Berengaria'. It's a shame that such an age has passed.
Apparently around the time the Olympic was to be scrapped, a group voiced a desire to turn her into a floating hotel in France (like Queen Mary later would be in Long Beach), but they never followed up. Such a disappointment; imagine how popular it would be now if they had saved her.
The RMS Olympic truly was the greatest merchant ship in history. Her design was perfect, beautifully proportioned with beautifully designed interiors. She was a war hero, not every ship has the accolade of sinking TWO submarines AND surviving being torpedoed. She was a survivor, who saw her two younger sisters never see a successful career and following the sinking of Titanic, she rose like a phoenix from the ashes and redeemed her tarnished reputation. During her lifetime, Titanic was never the reason as to why she was famous. She was famous because of what made her “The Old Reliable”. It’s a shame that Titanic overshadows Olympic, and that such an important ship is stuck in her younger sister’s shadow. Of course there are other ships that could be considered the greatest ocean liner in history, Normandie, Queen Mary, France, United States, but it was Olympic who in my opinion, is miles ahead of even the Queen Mary! The Olympic Class all had tragedies, all had a loss of life. Olympic’s tragedy was her own death and loss of life. While Olympic never should’ve been scrapped, she brought many jobs to Jarrow, being reliable to the very end. Titanic obviously made me interested in ocean liners, going through all the picture books and seeing the beautifully designed ocean liner, only later did I realize that those were all images of Olympic. I didn’t fall in love with Titanic, I fell in love with “The Old Reliable”
Wow, but only 191k views. Everyone interested in Titanic and all the wreck dive footage should watch this to see so many of the things we hear about on Titanic, the indoor pool, gym, grand stairs, state rooms, 1st class dining, smoking room etc. It's all viewable here ptetty much as it would have also looked & functioned on Titanic. Mind blowing.
alot of people forget that these ships were not built for the same purpose as todays carnival cruise liners which is a holiday at sea.this is how people traveled to different continents back then and today its done with airoplanes
True that's why they were called Ocean liners not cruise ships. Queen Mary 2 is the only Ocean Liner in the world now but sometimes she is used as a cruise ship.
As sad as it was that she had to be scrapped. I take comfort in the fact that she had a long and great career. Survived collisions with other ships, World War 1, and the first half decade of depression. Rest easy Old Relible. She did justice for both of her ill fated sisters.
Similar to me. I am absolutely no expert at ships (knowing historic airplanes much better), but Titanic is an exception, being the only ship I know many details of, thanks to deck plans and Titanic Honor and Glory. It is fascinating to have at least some idea of what to find where and how to get from A to B.
The RMS Olympic in her warpaint dodged torpedoes and ran down the pesky sub, cutting it in half. Her crew collected the German uboat crew and imprisoned them onboard. Also, the Olympic had plenty of opportunities to sink, but she never did. Being rammed accidentally by a ship designed to ram and sink ships early on. She is a fascinating vessel. I, like so many others, wish she was a museum.
She didn't stop to collect the U-boat survivors. The Admiralty were very protective of their valuable troopships and wartime protocols prohibited them from stopping for any reason, even if a nearby vessel (friend or foe) was in distress. It was up to the more expendable destroyers and cruisers escorting them to deal with such scenarios. The closest she came to sinking was in September 1918, when U-53 actually torpedoed her in the English Channel but through sheer luck the warhead failed to detonate, a sizable dent in her hull the only evidence of the close call.
It didn’t dodge any torpedos, the uboat couldn’t flood the torpedo tubes due to a malfunction. Olympic was always a lucky ship, had several collisions and accidents in its day and survived all of them. She took all her sisters’ luck I suppose.
Thank you so much for posting these videos of the olympic class ships of the past....I had a huge interest from a very young age! Just when you think you have seen most/if not all videos, along comes you :) .. Thank you once again ps/ just imagine if the "switch" did happen, and what we are looking at here is in fact the Titanic :o ....Crazy thought, hey!!!
Thanks David, appreciate your feedback. The switch theory has been clearly proven not to have happened, so yes it is Olympic not Titanic in this video. But glad you found the footage so interesting.
***** I found the footage very interesting! I enjoyed it very much. The Olympic Class was a very large class of liners. If I had the power to bring a ship back as a museum it would definitely be Olympic. Unfortunate that she was scrapped, but luckily her fittings pretty well survive.
this is what really Look like in the old days in 1908 - 1920, what really like to see the big Titanic and the sister Olympic, so awesome buck then, so video about the great Olympic and TITANIC
@14:30-I can see now why so much of the old luggage and trunks that we see in antique shops look so beat up. Look how rough they`re handled coming out of the ship!
Probably scrapped around the same time of the RMS Aquitania consistering that both ships were launched in the late 1910s, but only Aquitania lived on for another nearly 40 years and was scrapped in 1950 sadly.
Britannic along with Olympic were improved after the Titanic disaster in 1912. Britannic sank due to open portholes, but out of the three Olympic-class liners, Olympic was actually consistered like Titanic by the 1920's, but in the beginning each ship was meant to be mainly the same luxuries with minor differences.
madscientist 666 so if all 3 olympic class ships survived everything. they all would have been scrapped and be a lost memory anyway.....sounds about right
I just notices... The wheel house at 02:14 it's rect, but in the blueprints of the Olympic it's curve. It's just a change of desing of the ship after the war?
well, in 1935 no one cared about Titanic, that was a forgotten disaster....it was the 1997 fake-plot movie that made Titanic into something big to the public
@@essessessesq I believe it actually was the discovery of the wreck in 1985 that started the whole thing. Otherwise I don't think that movie had been made.
@@sealover5861 yes, you make a good point....the discovery of the ship made an impression on people such as me, who already knew about the Titanic, and that possibly prompted the making of the 1997 film....but what put Titanic into public awareness on a MASS scale was that ridiculously cartoonish ''good guy versus bad guy'' plot of the 1997 film...most people who saw the film believed the silly plot waas factual.....and the film libelled the crew and male passengers as being frantic, bewildered, and ineffective...film ignored the fact that the officers accomplished exactly what the Captain told them when they met on the bridge and he told them that they, and the ship, were doomed, and to get the women and children into the boats...Captain Smith said "there must be NO panic"...and there was none, until the last moments when the bow went under and the stern began to rise...the brave men got 74% of all females on Titanic into the lifeboats and to safety....but only a tiny 16% of all men aboard survived....worst was 2d class men, only 6% survived....more 3d class men survived than 2d class
No doubt that James Cameron borrowed heavily from this footage for his film😊 6.12. I wasn't exactly shocked to see wear and tear but I don't think I expected to see cracks and discoloration or rust near a boarding spot like you see at 15:17.
Does anyone know anything about Olympic's poop deck docking bridge and why in some photos in 1911 the starboard side of the docking bridge appears to be extended out by a few over the side?. I'm guessing this was to enable crew to see clearly over the side. However, this extension wasn't there when Olympic was launched nor during her maiden voyage but seems to have appeared around the time of the Hawke collision as does the gunwales painted brown on the lifeboats. For some reason photos of Olympic with her funnels painted black in 1915 don't show this extended poop deck docking bridge, and also photos showing the portside of the stern taken during Olympic's lifeboat inspection (which can be found on the Paul Lee Titanic site) shortly after the Titanic disaster show an extended out docking bridge. Anyone know why the docking bridge kept changing?.
+Kondan Or Yes I know. I have visited it and filmed it in person. She is a wonderful treasure and I recommend anyone with a sincere interest in Titanic, the Olympic Class ships or White Star Line visit as it is the closest we can get to experiencing the real thing.
Jeremy Xu Maintaining her would cost a lot. She would probably just be rotting somewhere like the United States, Queen Mary, and the Great Britain. I think it would be a sad fate for a grand ship like the Olympic.
The grandeur of yesteryear is no where near of today. These people excel opulence and take pride in their work in catering for the ships passengers. These people wore pride on their shirts by training in bow ties or ties, it’s just the sign of the time and it’s just seems people of today do not have anywhere near the respect and courteous of these superior bygone people. What a time to live in. Upmost respect to these people.

I really love this video. The Titanic and Olympic were nearly identical, so even though this is Olympic, it's like were getting a closer look at Titanic.
Curt Wakeman bullshit the switch theory was claimed false
Common sense. The story of the switch was invented by Robin Gardiner to sell books, he made up the entire thing and people believed him!
4:52 They did had arcade video games back in those
days in 1912's-1930's they use bicycle machines instead 2 vs 2 mulitplayer.
This has to be the most challenging public relations project of all time -- selling the "fun" on the Titanic's and Britannic's sister ship, the only one not at the bottom of the ocean..
And yet the video fails to mention the addition of the new upgraded lifeboats! Everybody get's a lifeboat!
@@lellius it was commonly known that the laws had changed
Not really, Olympic was pretty popular in the 20's despite Titanic sinking. Olympic really only suffered a drop in passenger numbers for a few months after Titanic sank, but she recovered quickly.
@@mathesonwarshawski380 1921 proved to be Olympic's best year, carrying a total of 38,000 passengers

Such a beautiful ship! The Olympic is truly royalty!
Fascinating video. You can see so many similarities between the Olympic and Titanic. Thanks for posting.

WHO TELL TO SCRAPPED RMS OLYMPIC?, THAT SHIP IS IMPORTANT! I WANT THAT SHIP BACK TO MAKE A MUSEUM! ITS SO RARE!
Well I'm sure white star line probably wanted to get the money for the ship, since if they turned it into a museum they wouldn't have earned anything
This is incredible. It's the exact same as the titanic barely any difference at all besides the name and a few other things. If only we could see this ship in real life today argghh
Blame the morons at Jarrow.
The ship's fittings and interiors were auctioned off and some still survive to this day.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Swan_Hotel,_Alnwick
Also, you've got to remember this was the 30s, the height of the great depression.
Good luck on that..
"But this ship can't sink!"
"Unsinkable ship is good for sinking other ships, sir."
This liner was so great that I love it very much!Great Olympic!
This is more like it. A happy sailing and no disasters.
she is truly a magnificent ship same withe her sisters
@@ozgeek81 correct, she is th Last Ocean Liner left
Carnival ships are disgusting
As sad as it was that she had to be scrapped. I take comfort in the fact that she had a long and great career. Survived collisions with other ships, World War 1, and the first half decade of depression. Rest easy Old Relible. She did justice for both of her ill fated sisters.

I'm getting flashbacks from a ship I've never been on, about a ship I've never been on..

Maybe you were in a past life.
A fantastic video thank you so much for your research and sharing.

Thank you so much for posting these videos of the olympic class ships of the past....I had a huge interest from a very young age! Just when you think you have seen most/if not all videos, along comes you :) .. Thank you once again

Thanks David, appreciate your feedback. The switch theory has been clearly proven not to have happened, so yes it is Olympic not Titanic in this video. But glad you found the footage so interesting.

imagine what the britannic would be like fully done and didnt sink. would be even grander then both sister ships
Probably scrapped around the same time of the RMS Aquitania consistering that both ships were launched in the late 1910s, but only Aquitania lived on for another nearly 40 years and was scrapped in 1950 sadly.
Tab 13 was britannic suppose to be even more luxurios then titanic

Britannic along with Olympic were improved after the Titanic disaster in 1912. Britannic sank due to open portholes, but out of the three Olympic-class liners, Olympic was actually consistered like Titanic by the 1920's, but in the beginning each ship was meant to be mainly the same luxuries with minor differences.
madscientist 666 so if all 3 olympic class ships survived everything. they all would have been scrapped and be a lost memory anyway.....sounds about right
I wish she still was here
I just notices... The wheel house at 02:14 it's rect, but in the blueprints of the Olympic it's curve. It's just a change of desing of the ship after the war?
Yes they changed it after the war.
Yeah They changed the shape
The grand staircase and elevators look much like on Titanic. This is like having a Time Machine. So interesting to see Titanic’s sister ship.
She should have been preserved as a museum and a restaurant.
well, in 1935 no one cared about Titanic, that was a forgotten disaster....it was the 1997 fake-plot movie that made Titanic into something big to the public
@@essessessesq I believe it actually was the discovery of the wreck in 1985 that started the whole thing. Otherwise I don't think that movie had been made.
@@sealover5861 yes, you make a good point....the discovery of the ship made an impression on people such as me, who already knew about the Titanic, and that possibly prompted the making of the 1997 film....but what put Titanic into public awareness on a MASS scale was that ridiculously cartoonish ''good guy versus bad guy'' plot of the 1997 film...most people who saw the film believed the silly plot waas factual.....and the film libelled the crew and male passengers as being frantic, bewildered, and ineffective...film ignored the fact that the officers accomplished exactly what the Captain told them when they met on the bridge and he told them that they, and the ship, were doomed, and to get the women and children into the boats...Captain Smith said "there must be NO panic"...and there was none, until the last moments when the bow went under and the stern began to rise...the brave men got 74% of all females on Titanic into the lifeboats and to safety....but only a tiny 16% of all men aboard survived....worst was 2d class men, only 6% survived....more 3d class men survived than 2d class
fantastic!!!!!

It still bothers me to this day that the Olympic was scrapped, can you imagine if she survived to this day?
Jeremy Xu Maintaining her would cost a lot. She would probably just be rotting somewhere like the United States, Queen Mary, and the Great Britain. I think it would be a sad fate for a grand ship like the Olympic.
My understanding is that her scrapping had provided jobs to many workers during a time of economic depression. So, she went out on top.
