  • It seemed so perfect, so scientific - a hair test that could objectively determine whether parents of young children were abusing drugs or alcohol. But it turns out the 'Motherisk' hair testing was flawed, and improperly administered all across Canada over twenty years. The results were devastating. Families broken up, children seized and irrevocably adopted out. The Fifth Estate tracked down parents who share stories for the first time on Tainted Tests: Broken Families. Mark Kelley reports. A joint investigation with the Toronto Star and CBC Radio’s The Current.

I have a very close family member who gave birth in Toronto. She was clean when her baby was born but because of prior drug use, hair tests were done. My relative had a C-section and a high risk pregnancy so came back positive for morphine and Percocet which was prescribed during and after the C section. No other drugs like cocaine, methamphetamines, heroin (or its metabolites), methadone or benzodiazepines were found. Only drugs easily verified and accounted for by her doctors. If she hadn't had parents that got a her a very expensive high priced lawyer, her son would have been taken. CAS admitted they wanted to take her son and wouldn't be convinced otherwise despite doctor, psychiatrists and social worker testimonies. Finally, CAS agreed to allow my relative to keep her son but with supervision and an open file for 1 year. This has followed my relative throughout her children's (she has another child) lives and caused constant fear of losing her children for nothing. Mother Risk is awful but much worse is CAS in Toronto.

This is absolutely heartbreaking. The parents should be reunited with their children, it's that simple. The adoptive families should not be able to choose whether or not they want to get involved. I hope all those Children's Aid social workers who make people's lives miserable might not be so quick to remove children from their parents. Once they get involved in your lives they never leave you alone... Whether or not there was any real reason for them being involved in the first place.

It's because child protection agencies which if you read above are not operated by government officials. The child protection agencies are motivated by finding and if that means keeping the kids for financial gain they will continue to do so. Open your eyes people. The real problem is that child protection agencies have way too much power and they are untouchable.

If the powers-that-be don't move to correct this now, this is going to turn into the same kind of generational bleeding we now see Canadians having to pay for unresolved trespasses against Native children years ago.
These kids stolen from their parents amidst accusations of their parents being terrible people are going to grow up bearing the wounds of what happened and start asking why it was not corrected sooner.
The natural parents need to be given preferential rights over the adoptive parents in deciding whether to demand return of their children, or leave them where they are. And CAS needs to named as a defendant held legally and financially liable for all reasonable incurred losses, reparations and anguish.
And then let them go after Motherisk and Sick Kids. Get these lives back on-track, to the natural parent's satisfaction. It is not right that these families -- and Canadians for generations to come -- should have to pay for the sake of incompetent doctors and hospitals profiting. They need to be stripped of those profits to pay for damages and then assessed punitive penalties so this kind of thing doesn't happen again soon.

How is it even possible that only 6 or 8 parents have been reunited with their children? The person Mark Kelly was speaking with even said they thought they were doing a good job. Good Job - My Lord .. they didn't even seem concerned at all .. it is like they were speaking about reuniting people with inanimate objects that had been stolen. These are their children for god sake .. there should be a way to bring as many parents as possible together and hire a law firm to sue Dr. Koren who started and ran Motherisk. Also Dr. Koren said he "didn't know the results were to be used in a court room" but he himself was in the court room defending Motherisk test results on a case that was mentioned during this show. LIAR .. he should have been arrested by now. Instead he is galavanting around the world speaking on behalf of Motherisk. No episode of The Fifth Estate has dumbfounded me and upset me more than this one ever and I have been watching for over 30 years. Very upset and concerned in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The courts system took the children away from their parents - they should be working very hard to correct that error - something has to done for these parents and those kids that lost their families. I feel sick.

People use drugs here and don't lose their children. They can even test positive for drug use when pregnant. They try to keep the family together this subject is mind-boggling to me. No, my friend it’s just as bad here. There are many ex CPS social workers who are coming out as whistleblowers and exposing the truth of this sick legal kidnapping nightmare happening here in the U.S. Kids are taken away by the truck loads with no basis for doing so and adopting them out with the parents not even being allowed to prove their innocence. Social workers make bonuses between $5,000 - $7,000 per child they adopt out to one who isn’t a relative. Thousands of children in the foster care system have gone missing and it’s been discovered that they have been sold into sex trafficking.
Nancy Schaefer was a Senator who spoke out against CPS and ended up losing her Senate seat because of it and then her life as she was about to release a documentary exposing CPS. She was murdered just before it was set for release and of course it never was. There are plenty of videos here on RUclips with her and also the former social workers explaining all this. Please check it out and spread the word so we can unite, take a stand and invoke change with this corrupt system who tears up good families and steals our kids for cash in their pockets. 🙏🏻♥️

They cleared me but didn't even bother going to my son's dad's house and inspect it like they did mine. Tara unfortunately there is an underlying reason. The child protection agencies simply want funding or money from the ministry for doing so. There are many articles out there one of them that brought many people attentions was the article "Peel CAS staff asked to keep cases open to retain funding". or blakout.ca/htm/viewthedoc.php#.Wf5fQFtSyUk .They do not care about the families or the children. They are not government agencies who are motivated by the funding formula they get from the ministry. Sad to say but child protection agencies should be deregulated and run by government organizations who would not be motivated to take away kids to retain or increase their funding. Similar to the police force although not perfect, they are checks and balancing that make sure they operate as fair and reasonable as possible.

However, if they work to help and succeed at putting those families back together, then let them stay out of jail, but keep the legals on record. For the doctor and the mredical expert, put them both in gen popfor the remainder of the life they have left.

CAS is disgusting and should be completely overhauled but in these cases I also blame the lawyers for pretty much NOT doing their jobs for their clients to the best of their abilities. totally disgusting and then to not reunite the kids with their parents??? that is the ultimate betrayal.

How is it that an Israeli citizen is heading up a lab in Canada that has such power over Canadian families and their young children? If Dr. Koren was on the up-and-up why does he have to lie so much? He runs back to Israel when things get hot, a country that doesn't extradite criminals who have done their crimes in other countries. It makes me wonder if child traffikking wasn't an objective of the whole operation.

I wonder how much the adoptive parents paid to adopt the children and who got paid? Over how many years, 35,000 cases some with multiple children, lawyers and judges not only making decisions about taking kids away but making decisions that would make them money through the adoption services provided within the family courts. This seems like judicial kidnapping and human child trafficking.

A terrible shame what happened to these families. The children should be told that the separation from their parents was not the fault of the parents. Help for them to understand what really happened should be offered to the kids affected. Hopefully all will reunite at some point in their lives. The kids, birth parents and adoptive parents are all victims of Motherisk's mistakes.

CAS is afraid of making mistakes at the cost of the children. Family Court is responsible for deciding on what outcome they believe is in the best interests of the children. Caution is taken. CAS are also required to offer help if problems present itself within a family to keep them united. Mistakes made by them in the past have cost the lives of children which makes them wary when making decisions.

    • @millana6292
      @millana6292 6 лет назад +4

You are very naive Pamela, the courts make their judgements based on CAS reports. In order to believe what you do, you have either a)not been on the opposite side of the CAS, or be, b)someone who either works for or along with the CAS. They have done so much destruction to so many kids and parents, it’s horrific. I have a BA in psych, and a child and youth workers degree and I have so much empathy for these families. They have just as much, or more, power than cops. Cops can jail you, CAS can steal your family away. Just to mention a small example, not all drug users are unfit to be parents, and I am not a drug user. Not all cultures, and Canada is becoming extremely multicultural, rear children with the same ideals, punishments, and values of the white mans world. They have wayyyyyy too much power, and I have seen so many workers who are complete and utterly power trippers. I have heard way too many stories, from children taken, of the terrible lives they have endured. Failing a drug test is not a viable reason for keeping kids from their parents. Divorced partners, with revenge motives, are enough to get your child taken. The CAS are heartless and despicable. Why do you think this was able to happen, just another flaw in their system. But oh well, no big deal, right?

FROM WIKIPEDIA>>> Early life and academic background
Born in 1947 in Tel Aviv in the British Mandate of Palestine, prior to the establishment of the State of Israel, Koren was raised in the neighbouring town of Kiryat Ono. His father was the chief engineer of Reading Power Station of the Israel Electric Corporation.
Koren received his Doctor of Medicine from the Sackler School of Medicine at Tel Aviv University in 1973. After a period of military service, he pursued postgraduate clinical studies in pediatrics and pediatric nephrology, and research training in pediatric toxicology and pharmacology and membrane biology at the Hospital for Sick Children and the University of Toronto. He joined the staff of the university and hospital, ultimately attaining the rank of professor. He later received the endowed Ivey Chair in Molecular Toxicology at the Schulich School of Medicine at The University of Western Ontario. At UWO, he participated in the establishment of a national program in human toxicology, in parallel with his continuing work at the University of Toronto and the Hospital for Sick Children. I TOLD U HE IS A FILTHY JEW!!!
    Arts background
In parallel to his academic career, Koren is an established composer and author. In 1971, while studying medicine at TAU, Gideon "Gidi" Koren founded the Israeli musical group, The Brothers & the Sisters (ha'achim veha'achayot), which features an Israeli folk/country style. The band performed many of Koren's songs and musical plays for children.[9][10][11]
In 1974, in collaboration with Israeli performer Shlomo Artzi, Koren composed a record album based on his grandmother Keri's story, A Journey to Noteland. A musical based on the book and CD of A Journey to Noteland had its stage debut in Israel in 2008 and continues to be performed.[12]
In 1992 Koren founded the Bear Theatre at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. In July 2007 the theatre celebrated 15 years and 750 shows.[13][14][15]
In 2005, The Brothers & The Sisters toured North America following the publication of a commemorative Hebrew-English book of the Israeli poet Natan Yonatan’s poetry, accompanied by a CD of his songs, set to music by Koren and performed by the band.[16][17] The Brothers and the Sisters continue to perform throughout Israel in programs featuring Koren's songs, many of which were written to the words of Israeli poets, including Yehudah Amichai, Leah Goldberg, Rachel, Amir Gilboa, and Ze’ev Jabotinsky.

This happened to my son he freaked out they were going to put him in jail, he fought back had his own test done he left probation called a reputable lab and had his own done that same day , he was completely clean. It happens A LOT and if it can happen to people then these tests should never be admissible in court you shouldn't loose a job, an opportunity for a job ,your freedom as a consequence of violating adult probation, or loose custody of your children! All these labs know there is room for error but they insist that these tests are good enough to use against a person .

Sorry to hear that Alex, unfortunately the private child protection agencies rely on funding to keep their jobs which is why many children are taken away from their loving parents unfortunately. As I said before, these agencies need to be changed to government only or put a cap on each child protection agency business. This way every CPS gets exactly the same amount of funding which would stop the corruption going on of the need to take away kids for more funding.
