- This clip from Suburban Protector’s Defensive Handgun Tactics course goes over the ideal stance and grip to shooter more accurate, faster, and to reduce both recoil and muzzle rise.
We want a stance that accomplishes a few things:
1) Be stable, mobile, and balanced- think of a fighting or athletic stance. Feet shoulder width apart, slightly offset, and knees slightly bend.
2) Manage recoil with forward center of gravity- leaning slightly forward to combat the rearward force of the gun.
3) Establish a Natural Point of Aim- align the hips, shoulders, spine, and nose to target. This will improve accuracy. In shooting the body aims and the eyes confirm so this will get you on target faster.
With our grip we want to manage muzzle rise and ensure our sights return quickly to the target.
We want to achieve 2 main principles of grip which are:
1) Leverage - get good leverage over the gun with a high grip with both the support and firing hand.
2) Friction- get as much friction on the gun as possible by making contact with as much of your hand on the frame as you can.
When it comes to how hard to squeeze the gun you want to grip it as hard as you can without shaking and disturbing the sights. You’ll also want to keep your wrist locked.
We go over these in much more detail in our private lessons and group classes.
