Hey. My 3 year old son loves ur vids. He laughs every time u hit a low note. Now he says he wants to play tuba when he grows up.
This is actually the best he can do with his future🤘👍
I agree
Your kid is insanely smart!
@@colepasch2950 not to be like that but I think it's normal for 3 year olds to say things like "I want to be an astronaut" and also a 3 year old doesn't watch a video like this in the same way an adult does.
Train em young
This etude is so cool it's literally an extended version of the fountains of rome excerpt
on crack
Those sudden embouchure changes between several octaves is just insane
Damn. I was about to go to sleep, but now I want to practice!!
The “Cut” you have in the lower register is unreal. I almost feel like I was hearing a contrabass trombone at times...
His efficient embouchure seems to be pretty efficient
Making the low range sound ever so so sweet :-) I really enjoyed listening to this, Derek. Thanks so much for recording and posting!
Ut's GREAT to hear low range stuff played on a 6/4 tuba! I'm an old geezer who once played a relatively inexpensive Cerveny CC tuba, an AZACB6015MR, with .835 bore and 500mm bell, in several groups. At one Indianapolis Symphonic Band concert, a player who was filling for a missing player, before I got my tuba out, told me the missing player had told him about a guy who had a 6/4 Cerveny tuba, and was laughing it up as he told me. While he was guffawing, I got out my 6/4 Cerveny tuba and started warming up. He went silent, turned pale, then regained his composure. He did the expected embarrassed laugh. When I warmed up by playing the Arban Carnival of Venice, he became very quiet. It was a great feeling.
How in the world could I not love the tuba! Fantastic job Derek. Thanks for sharing your talent and inspiring us.
Awesome. More like this, please!
Excellent! Thank you for posting.
Sounds great Derek! Really like the sound of the Nirschel York too!
Wow! Great sound, flexibility and control. Wonderful work in the low register. Thank you for posting this and I'm gonna go practice now. I would really like to hear more of these etudes performed by you.
Best amazing sound
oooh so THIS is what a tuba is supposed to sound like!
Your sound is so crisp and clean both in the low and upper registers. Bravo!
I am so glad that I clicked on this video.
UNBELIEVABLE!!!
FANTASTIC!!!
EARTH MOVING!!!
Great playing and musicality!!!
Sounds just like Fountains of Rome!
Kason F
This Etude uses same rhythm.
Kason F really does. Same rhythms and takes some interval ideas from it.
It´s not like he said that this is based on the Fountains of Rome! :P
it sounds like fountains of rome on crack lmao
Actually it’s fountains of Rome on drugs.
You sound great as always, Derek!
Sounds great, man. I enjoyed this!
love the little snippets of fountains of rome
You make it seem so effortless, like if anyone tried to keep the notes in a good centering going from really low to middle they know its really hard.
Muito bom,perfeito,som maravilhoso.
Powerful. Beautiful.
yes very nice! you made it look/sound easy, great playing :)
Holy moly, bravo!
Great stuff, both writing and playing!
How do you learn when to move your tuning slides like that? Do you just memorize the tuning tendencies of every single note?
Also how do you get your slides moving like they’re a trombone? They look so slick
Cool
@@C4pt41nN3m0 I'm pretty sure lapping is sanding in order to remove the metal of the slide, what you're speaking of is slide alignment which is the option you should pursue before lapping
Yes, but you can math it out too (I've done this for 4-valve horns because I was curious).
Amazing!
This is amazing, I did not know the tuba could have such a sound in the low register
Oh yes it can! Derek and Chris Olka are two examples of tuba players who can play in the low register of tuba with an edgy bass bone sound
It takes years of work to get that level of control, but that's actually the primary purpose behind the Snedecor etudes. Lots of carryover to all aspects of technique if you ever manage to nail low register playing like Derek does.
Hope you post a video again soon! You’re tone and control makes me want to practice my butt off
Aye! Aye! Captain! That was fantastic!
I'm a fellow tuba player myself and I enjoyed this piece
Excelente sonoridade!!!!
Bravo!!!
God I really need to work on my low register...
HOLY CRAP WOW!!!
Thats cool. A little challenging. The wild jumps ought to smooth out articulation issues nicely. Since I have recently found out (adopted at birth) that I am the great great ... grandson of Peter Easton The Pirate Admiral, I would offer the suggetion that if you just make it swing a little, borrow from a jig or hornpipe like, it won't sound like an etude anymore and if you keep a straight face you could tell people its an old sea song and they'd believe it.
The low end on that horn sounds amazing and it doesn't run out of breath up high. Of course its pretty hard to go wrong with a horn that Walter built.
Awesome sound!!
When I was 8 years old I could get some good low notes out of a Sousaphone. My dad was in the repair business and before the school budget cuts times were good, when school let out for the summer a truck would pull up to the house and unload and for weeks we'd have Sousaphones in the bedrooms and clarinets stacked up like firewood. Unfortunately when I bought my own Sousa circa 2000, decades of playing trombone, and later saxophone, had spoiled my childish tuba embouchure. I pick the big albatross up now and then and let the neighbors know I still have it. I've always had a thing for low instruments. I was a far better bass trombone player (or third) than I was on lead because I was lousy at high notes. Anything above a G, I was screwed and as time wore on, I'd lose the G and then the F# and F..... I took up saxophone at 40, and while I had an alto, a tenor, and even a C melody, bari became my main instrument and even now after dabbling in piano, organ, and guitar for a whole, the baritone sax is still my best instrument. Would love to have a bass sax someday.... yeah would love to have a Corvette too but let's get real....
a real fascinating ride!
Interesting way to practice Fountains of Rome. Which is the book you take it from?
anthony tralo lower etudes for tuba
What manufacturer and model of tuba is this?
Que som espetacular
Salut ce model este tuba și ce marca este tuba
Woah
Finally not a tuba solo that’s not insanely high
Got Damn!
Super!
Bravissimo 6/4..
thats insane still, ive watched it like 30 times now
Hello derek
Hi Derek, fantastic video amazing sound. Is there anywhere I can get this book delivered to the EU? I have the Low Etudes book and am desperate to buy the Lower Etudes! Thanks
Sound Great! What’re you and the symphony playing next??!
Hey Derek! R u using a set of MAW valves on this Nirschl York?I just bought one for about 2 months and looking forward to make some adjustment.Hope u can reply!THX!
Hello, I am not currently using them on this instrument, though I do have them on my B&S 3198 (PT6). Someday I do hope to look into them for this horn. Best of luck with your new instrument!
Bravo! Very beautiful sound!
Please tell me the brand and model of your instrument.
Great Job

Where can I find this sheet music for free?
Nowhere. It's in a book. You will have to exchange money for the book, and then the etude, and others like it, will be yours.
I enjoyed this. thank you. You may as well clean the pistons of your instruments.
O yes very very well
Someone help me with low register
It's simple. Open up the throat and play with huge air. Use the Rochut etudes book for trombone and play it down 2 octaves, nice and slow. Start with just a little bit at a time and then add on. Start with number 3 and work your way up, it will do the trick. Nothing can replace hard work and time spent in the problem register.
Best of luck and happy tuba-ing!
what brand/type of tuba and mouth peace is he using?
Why do you have a valve that keeps changing as you play
Choo Jun Wyng
I'm assuming you're asking about the valve slide that he is repeatedly pulling and pushing in. If so, the purpose of that is to lower and raise the pitch to assist with tuning the specific valve he is pressing down
That is a techique used by skilled players that need more precision for the tuning, for example while playing solo and in symphonic orchestra.
Not even the most expensive instruments have perfect pitching, and the more you get to know your instrument, the more you will notice that some notes are a little high or a little low. Often, you can adjust this with lip technique and air flow, but by using these tuning slides you will get a better and more precise sound.
In some parts this sounds like the fountains of rome
What instrument is he using?
Sorry. I am not good at English.
Meister Walter Nirschl MWN 8 York CC Tuba
Genial, ich gratuliere!

what tuba is ?
I'm not a tuba, where can I learned to how to manage at least the main tuning slide
What? You shouldn't need to adjust your main tuning slide that often during a piece
If you're not a tuba why would you ask?what do you play?
@@raghulsachi1428 sorry i dont mean the main tuning slide. I mean the 1st and 2nd that he like his in this video. I play trombone
@@GamerTime_2002 for trombone that would be weird so idk, you should ask a teacher.
@@GamerTime_2002 tubas have valves, so it s easier for us to change our pitch
So pulling on the [valve joint?] elongates the frequency with minimum compromise to the tone/[note range?].
Sorry not a music major.
I'll respect that stand point and not insinuate a lack of knowledge... However we are all constantly learning.
If you slow the count the method should have more of an impact I think.
I could be wrong and displaying ignorance... The purpose is to strengthen your capability though isn't it?
Perhaps you should respect your trombones...
It sounds great though. Learn to roll your tongue. I envy that [I use envy the wrong way] you can strengthen your ability.
...You are one of the reasons Mordor is under the persecution of scrutiny sir. There must be order.
Fountains of Rome?!?
Mooi
Why 13 dislikes?!?!?! This is A M A Z. I N G
2 set?
If you can play that your fountains will be a breeze
I wish I can work on my low register, but my dumb school tuba only goes to a low E, AND ITS IN Bb! :(((((((((
Scribbli Chheery I play sousaphone and it can go to Ab 0 but if you’re talking about a tuba with 4 valves then yes they can go lower 😩
@@felixplaystuba6937 Yeah, I can hit an A0ish too, but it's so much harder because I can't warm up to my lower end because I got a tiny tuba with no 4th valve to gradually go lower :(((
Mason Guy I had a Yamaha 3 valve 3/4 tuba, it seemed as if the pedal notes and lower felt the same but it’s harder to get it in tune and or better tone, if you’re struggling with a tiny tuba try going chromatically down, that’s what I did. Starting off the day with a B1flat down to Pedal E. Then from there I go pedal E to Pedal B flat. I’m not sure what tuba you have because even an F tuba can go a step lower
@@felixplaystuba6937 Yeah, mine is a Yamaha 3 valve, may be 3/4 but it seems very small. I am warming up to pedals though which is good
Actually low E is the lowest note you can play in the primary register of a three valved tuba, but if you loosen your lips and open your jaw, you can play petal tones. The highest petal tone that can be played is Bb. It’s an octave lower than primary Bb, and goes all the way down to petal tone E. The E natural in the octave lower than the piano is the lowest note a BBb three valved tuba can play. I find it kind of frustrating though that you can’t play from low Eb to Petal tone C because I too have a 3/4 sized tuba.
I would really like to have your tone for dessert.

I JUST LOVE THAT BIG AMAZING TUBA WHEN IT HITS THE BIG FAT LOW NOTES I LOVE WHEN DEREK FENSTERMACHER DOSE THAT GOOD MAN YOUR BEST FRIEND DAN WALTERS I LOVE THE BIG FAT OOMPAH OOMPAH PAH PAH?
I play Tuba but I've never seen a Tuba where you have to slide vavles too
He doesnt technically have to move slides, however the tuba he is playing is a York CC which is 6/4 size tuba that is based off of an older 6/4 BB flat tuba, for some reason, I dont really remember exactly why, these tubas have some problems staying in tune, but basically thats the only reason he is using the slides so much.
@@robertanderson2969 oh, ok thanks for clearing that up, it makes more sense now👌
Technically speaking, all tubas have intonation problems whenever you use more than one valve at a time, and usually on the open partials too. It's possible to lip everything into proper intonation, but sometimes the adjustment needed would be quite large, especially in the low register with an uncompensated instrument. Many professional players feel that they get better tone by playing everything right down the center of the slot and moving slides to adjust intonation.
The only big thing I have is a large amount of breathing, I'm playing this and something else with my college audition and I personally wouldn't breathe as often as Mr. Fenstermacher. I take in as much air as possible every time. This wouldn't be an etude where I would allow small hick-up breaths(In my opinion). Maybe I'm wrong, please tell me your thoughts.
andrew gambrell He’s taking quick breaths, but they are by no means small. The primary focus of Snedecor etudes is to create and sustain the biggest, most pure sound you possibly can through the tuba. Or, at least, that’s my biggest focus, and I’m pretty sure it’s also his. In this etude, that involves lots of massive, but very quick breaths. If you’re not within 2 feet of him playing, those breaths are nearly inaudible. They’re “snuck in”. Every professional player I’ve met does it the exact same way. It creates the illusion of never really stopping to take a breath to the audition committee/audience. One of many reasons that he is a professional.
I take back what i said, this guy plays the hell outta this thing
The tuba sounds like me after a big pot of baked beans.
🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
This man playing trombone and tuba simultaneously.
Sometimes a little bit from Gondors Horn

As a tuba fan but woodwind player, I guess I'd have to ask why that much pitch adjustment is necessary. Now, I've watched this video about 15 times now because you're f***in awesome, I love the tune, and I love your sound. But, speaking as a bassoonist, I can say that even on my instrument, the intonation is a little more even than it would seem to be on yours based on how much movement you're making. It's clearly working for you, but is tuba that...uneven? I guess it must be. At any rate, I love listening.
He’s playing over more than 3 octaves with only 5 valves. A bassoon has what, 30 keys? Literally every single professional 6/4 C tuba player plays like this. Some might have slightly better aligned tubes that don’t need as much adjustment, but usually those tubas don’t have as good a sound as this Nirschl C tuba here.
Why the fuck am I watching this? I play saxophone, not Tuba
wtf is he doing with his other hand what
What do you think I’m doing with it?
Hahaha
He's adjusting his slides for intonation.
@@tubachef06 No clue i started tuba in june and im 1st chair i just dont really get that at all
the more out the tuning slide is the flatter the notes are. The more in, the sharper
Peter griffin? What !👀
time to get my contra trombone
This would sound really nice if it was part of a symphony, not a one person solo. Very well done

Lower notes sound bad!
