    After being a professional painter for over 40 years Just had to clik on "Rolling and Tipping"
    never heard it before after painting in 7 states from New York to California . Then I realized you mean "lay it off" or feathering . Heck that's how I painted about everything I didn't spray, only as fast as possible . The more you work that roller the more crap comes out of it. cheers!

    Morning Trout Bum, I painted this section around 20-23 c , I’m currently painting the upper section right now, it’s fluctuated, between 15-25, I put 5% white spirit in the paint just to give me more time on the wider sections as it wanted to tack off at 25c, once you’ve got the confidence and rhythm you should be ok . Good luck matey 🙋‍♂️🍻

    Nice job Phil , but when paint is applied it naturally wants to run or flow “Downwards “ so tipping or laying off with a brush should always be upwards , can also be done downwards , can understand why you went sideways though because of the long shape .

      Hi Chris, thanks for the comments, At the time, it was my first experience at paintings boat, and definitely a novice, I decided to take the easy route and the most comfortable route, as it turned out, I got a really nice finish ( probably down to the paint to be fair), so I stuck with that method , I’d agree with you on downward or upward strokes would of been better, looking back actually, as I’d not at that point put the wood rubbing straights on the sides. But overall it’s looking rather dapper dear boy…..
      Thanks for your comments once again Chris I really appreciate them 🍻👍

    Hope you are better I too had a bad time with Covid I was a RN in NY . I’m using total boat wet edge and getting lines , it flattens out however still lines from the brush. When yo we’re done did you have some lines from the brush?Any suggestions ? I’m going to roll and leave it, she’s an old boat from 1988 the fish won’t care and I believe it will be an easy repair. Hi Phil! Just have a quick question referring to "keeping a wet edge", does that mean I have to keep paint on the brush? Or do I just following through as is with a dry paint brush? Please let me know at your most convenient time. Thanks! You did an awsome job!

    • @philmurphy3549
      @philmurphy3549  5 лет назад

      Hi Christine, thanks for subscribing, so keeping a wet edge basically means the rolling on Part upto the last section you do, just overlap slightly, this just keeps the last edge wet so it doesn’t drag,then use your dry paint brush and tip off just beyond and into the previous section. If you live in a hot country it might be advisable to put some white spirit in the paint to slow the drying period down, but check the paint details first.

      Gday matey 🤔 I’m sure it was a single pack paint, it’s by International paints “ TopLac” I think, I used a bit of thinner’s just to give me a little spread time before it tacked off and pulled on the brush, I know it doesn’t like cold weather so just be careful dear boy, other than that, it was great to apply, I’ll soon be doing a bit more painting, just waiting for the uk weather to pickup a bit before I have another go.

    What kind of paint brush do you use and roller I had a urethane paint brush before for urethane paint but didn't use this method when painted my truck before I tried a method with a brush and a roller but didn't come out right when painted a small spot on vehicle.

    • @philmurphy3549
      @philmurphy3549  2 года назад

      Hiya Zanaga 1 , really depends on which manufacturer of the paint you use I think, I’d use “International” boat paint, spreads better, also depends on outside temperature, if your painting outside in heat or sun, it would flash off and drag over your brush to quickly. As for what type of roller, I’d use a short hair type, less bubbles when you put the paint on, and brush, a fine strand type ,manmade ( like mine ) or a high quality horse hair maybe. One more thing, you could put some thinners in your paint as this will help you find your pace and rhythm putting the paint on, it won’t flash off as quick.
      Hope this helps……..

      Morning JP, yes I’m on the mend, I got a nasty strain of Covid and it’s taken a long time to get better...... anyway, Toplac...... yes good paint, really depends on temperature as to how well it goes on the boat, ( well it was in my case)..... I think I did the hull in summer ( just check when I posted the video). I put a small amount of thinners in just to give me work time as it was my first attempt at rolling and tipping I think, so I think as your in Portugal ( unsure of the temperature mind 🤔) I’d say that’s they way to go, but mix well, lots of paint sediment at the bottom of those cans so mix until it’s all dispersed dear boy. Short haired roller and a good sized brush, together with steady strokes should do the trick, If it the paints not working with you , stop. Let it dry, flat it off and do again, you’ll know fairly soon after you’ve started the job.
      On a final note, I was looked after in intensive care by a lovely nurse from Portugal, she worked solidly for two weeks then went back home for two weeks, I owe her and the ICU team a great deal🙏.

      Well As I said in one of the episodes, it was my first time doing it, was it hard🤔… no it wasn’t, plus I thought in my own way, if I got it wrong, or it wasn’t going to buff up ( the cream upper section) , then so what, I’ll flat it off and try again🤷‍♂️. The one thing I would say, is that I did paint both the sides and later the upper section, well into spring or early summer so maybe that helped, plus it’s indoors too, maybe that also helped….
      I’d definitely recommend the international paint though as it was very forgiving.
      Anyway, good luck with your project, and hopefully we’ll be back doing some more episodes, thanks for subscribing Nathan 🍻🙋‍♂️

    sorry cocker wrong brush,, looks like cheap general purpose hard bristle you need a soft man-made filament and at around 24 mins you change the way you hold the brush and the pressure is altered, topping means just that just the tip and light next to no pressure

      Hiya Ragandoil, I agree, the brush at the time felt good, I was aware that it would of been better using quality brush. If you watch the next episode due in a couple of weeks, you’ll see I’ve flatted the blue off ready for another coat, this time I will thin the paint and upgrade the brush. I’ve started painting the upper section now with a small inexpensive horse hair one and it’s turning out really well. Thanks for your comments....
      Regards Phil 🍻🙋‍♂️

      @@philmurphy3549 Great mate, I went to have a look at a Fairy marine 24footer yesterday, ill be using an airless for the antifouling copper coat and ultra fine finish 4x 10 thou spray tip, the water line in the same blue you have, clear for the deck and white superstructure,

      Mate, you are right-handed, why don't you start on the right end keep the roller patch a tad smaller to retain the wet edge and pul to the left. your in front of your werk longer and you can keep an eye on your own progress, just a thought mate
