I think a positive mindset will really help you. Get out of your head and thoughts, live and enjoy in the moment also dont identify with anything anyone says to you you decide what you do and behave dont limit your self

Yep. And I also have fibro. which causes all over body aches and extreme fatigue. Sometimes I really can't identify what is causing my issues, the ADHD or the fibro. I'm 67 years old and still work full time. My bro passed in Nov suddenly he was my dearest friend in the world Now, my sis and I are faced with closing two estates, one has two houses full of stuff. The other has a house and a big office building...full of stuff and I live in one of the family homes. What a nightmare. I'll make it thru though! What choice do we have?!

I was diagnosed with ADHD less than 2 years ago after years of being diagnosed with depression, and since then I’ve been trying to learn and embrace myself, and work on building systems and positive thinking. However, last month I fell into a horrible depression and exactly what you just described, feeling so burned out I buried my head in the sand for an entire month. Stopped going to classes, didn’t submit my assignments, barely communicated with anyone cuz I was ashamed of explaining what was going on especially that I myself wasn’t confronting my emotions, just binged 6 seasons of a tv show. that’s my escapist addiction bc I can pretend like my life doesn’t exist and focus on the lives of the characters. This month I’ve been trying to pick myself back up again and have been so anxious but this video while it said things I already know it felt good to listen to you explain them in such an understanding and empathetic way and made me feel less critical about what I’m going through. Thank you for having such a calming and reassuring voice and for saying what a lot of us feel deep down but aren’t able to put the words for it

I landed on this video looking to find out more about these burn out periods. Now that I’m a certain age, I can see it’s a pattern. I go from high-achieving with everyone congratulating me to HIDING from the world, not opening mail, literally ignoring my phone, emails, etc. These burnouts last 1-2 years on average. Once I’m in the thick of it, the mess seems too big to battle.
While I know better because the same small steps pull me out every single time, I lose the desire to climb out with every burn out. It’s terrifying and I so wish I could just flip a switch and be normal (rather than initiating a major novel change like moving, finding a new job, starting a new business, etc.). 😩
The burn out periods have robbed me of so much life! Here’s to hoping: now that we KNOW why it’s happening, we’ll be able to fight it before it happens again. 🤷🏼‍♀️ ❤

I so get your brain! You are speaking my language! I feel overwhelmed just listening to this as I’m right in this space right now. I just want to run away. Last week I vented and expressed anger to several family members, I had taken way too much on as I always do, I was as irritable as Fck. I never yell or am mean to others and I just lost it. Years and years of taking on everyone else crap and doing everything for everyone, due to my people pleading! I am in total burn out after doing this for years. It’s not there fault that I choose to over burden myself. I feel bad and I can’t take back the things I have said. I’ve had to hide from the world for a week! I’ve put all of these important things that need doing aside, the world isn’t going to fall over if they are not done, I needed a break from it all.

I’ve always struggled with math. Now I’m in a situation where I have to get a good math score on the GRE. Concentrating on math for any more than two hours leaves me feeling absolutely drained, my eyelids low, my mood shot, and I don’t even feel like I can relate to, or have conversations with people. The. I retreat into video games or netflix to try and enjoy one sliver of the day, but I don’t even really gave gas left in the tank to enjoy that. Of course, that throws me off my sleep and I feel drained the next day more often than not. I have no idea how to fix this and still accomplish the things I need to accomplish.

I’ve been dealing with a whole slew of emotional problems and stress and addictions, sudden upswings after school semesters ended that made me be misdiagnosed with bipolar. I'm already doing most of this, and still not able to keep up... I just moved out into a new apartment, and I struggle so much to even keep it clean, make food for myself, let alone unpack all my boxes. I haven't been able to exercise much, and exercise is very important to me as I enjoy it a lot. I have been overcomplicating things, like I feel this overwhelming need to sort all my clothes by color and function, and to find the perfect place for every single piece of clothing, and I'm doing something similar in the kitchen. Whenever I find the perfect place for an item it makes me feel happy and calm, but it doesn't change the fact that I spent half the day doing something others would have spent an hour on, or that most of my apartment is a total mess. I have a full time job, so I feel like I have so little time to do everything. I have not been diagnosed btw, but I have most of the ADD symptoms, and I will get tested soon.

It has taken me quite some time to realize that my auditory overload is connected to my ADHD, and finding a podcast that understands this struggle is a true gem.
One of the frustrations I've encountered in my search for ADHD-related podcasts is stumbling upon shows that bombard listeners with loud music intros and overly energetic hosts. However, your podcast stands out from the crowd. You manage to deliver a wealth of information in a concise yet soothing manner. Your sessional and well-thought-out style is truly admirable.

This is great advice and helps me to understand a crisis I had many years ago. I was doing all the things you talked about, hyper-focusing on several things I was passionate about and ended up being treated for psychotic depression. The treatment was dreadful. I had lost my wife and family in the meantime. I'm not diagnosed but a Psychologist I saw for about a year considered that I was autistic. I think he was right. The possibility that I might also have ADHD didn't come up at that time but study I have done myself since then (I'm also a health professional) has presented it as a very real possibility. I have accepted it as real and strategies recommended for self-management of ADHD are working well for me. Your video adds more confirmation for me. I'm now in a much better place in my life but I still have to be aware of the risks. Thanks.

These are all of the skills that I have learned by myself in the past that have worked for me. I tend to become overwhelmed when I am shopping with others in the store. If someone is walking too quickly, I will have an information overload form trying to see everything on the shelves (because my brain needs to see everything for some reason). I have learned to communicate this ahead of time to my friends and family, stop in a safe spot in the aisle and close my eyes, take two deep breaths or wait until the information flood stops, then open my eyes and continue shopping. I will often grab my partner's arm to alert him that I need to pause and he understands what that means. This can help me to avoid becoming irritable, becoming distressed, crying, having a panic attack, or developing a headache from information overload.

I am just now learning after 35 years that burnout *can be* a sign of ADHD. I've suffered through terrible CFS bouts in my adult life, but I did it to myself! I used to self-treat by ultra-running. I've self-treated with immense amounts of caffeine. I became a flight attendant and stopped sleeping sometimes for over 24 hours several times in a month because there were too many cool things to see. It's like my body forgot how to rest or sleep and I crashed hard in 2018. I got to a point where I could barely walk. It was very scary, and I thought I had something like MS. Nope, just stress (and a hormonal issue that I am treated for now). I sleep normally now and am physically so much healthier than I used to be. My mental/ADHD symptoms though are still something I haven't been able to get a handle on. I feel like there's too much I want to do in life and I can't do it all. As an example, a few months ago, I ended up starting to volunteer for 3 different organizations all at once. Well, come to find, I couldn't handle that with my already full-time job and travel schedule. I have so much mental motivation but can't carry anything out. Coffee helps a lot for my mental state, but I'm afraid of burning my body out again with it, so I don't drink it often. Anyway, with my ramblings, I'm trying to say this video is quite relevant to my situation, so thanks for posting!

Dial it down. Lol. Great idea, in theory. EVERYTHING is a 10 on the importance scale. My "to do" list can end up being 2 and a half pages, front AND back, of a legal size pad. Burnout, burns me out. Lol. I appreciate your video and posting your ideas. And if anyone is actually reading this, be kind to yourself. ADHD chose you and it's NOT a character flaw. You're absolutely wonderful the way you are. Learn to laugh at yourself and definitely take breaks when needed. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go be Superman and perfect. 😂 Stay strong. Reach out for help and support. You're loved.

Even though I don't follow them perfectly, I found two tools that can help with burnout and overwhelm: the pomadoro technique ( a timer you use for x amount of time to work/focus and x amount for rest) and the Eisenhower matrix (categorizing tasks do, decide, delete or delete which are all based on both urgency and importance).

Do you ever deal with severe brain fog?
I have the combined-type (even though I see myself as predominantly inattentive) and I’m on the spectrum, too.
My mind is usually extremely foggy and I feel as though I’m living my life on autopilot. I can’t remember anything. My life is a complete blur. :(
Ritalin was amazing to begin with but I soon became emotionally blunted on it. Elvanse didn’t have any effect on me at all and Atomoxetine only intensified suicidal thoughts.

This was excellent. Just what I needed right now, especially your comment that nothing is perfect and neither are we-- And that black and white thinking is damaging. Recently i made a huge blunder in grad school (missed a presentation because I wrote the wrong date down) and I started considering abondoning my current academic goals. But.... I'm not perfect. I make huge blunders sometimes and I always will. But I'll keep going anyways ! And get better, and still make mistakes anyways, and keep going anyways.
    Cheers!

All in or nothing is kind of why i believe ill be one of the best in my passion, like the fact i get so tunnel visioned means i achieve whatever i set my mind to. I really need to spend my 20s working on gaining a routine lifestyle of keeping balance in my life though. Ill work on that and meditation once ive got the ball fully rolling.
Decided to leave my job this week despite this recession because i need some happiness, progression and real time to get on with what matters to me in life. Being broke may overwhelm me but its all about pros n cons, which i believe being on my purpose for the next few months will bring out more pros. This comment is everywhere but i just wanna say, if your brain WANTS to achieve something so bad, take the risks after working out backup plans and comparing the pros n cons. Were the innovators, inventors, original creatives of this world. We pave how humanity progresses, period.

No you obviously haven't taken meds. Your head is in the clouds.
How can you achieve your passions if you don't have a day routine, after quitting your job? You need both work and freetime to frame your time and get things done. My friend who has add and is unemployed gets the least done of all of my friends. Same with me when I was a neet.
