Maple Leaf Rag - 3 Pianos on Fire

- Опубликовано: 5 ноя 2009
- The final performance of the "3 Pianos on Fire" set was perhaps the most famous of all rags, Scott Joplin's second published rag, and the first he had published by John Stark & Son. The publication of this in 1899 also was landmark in that the contract granted Joplin royalties on the sales, when the standard at the time was for composers to sell their tunes outright for a one-time fee.
The rag is traditionally used as a show-off piece, and that's certainly how it's done here, with the pianos definitely "on fire" by the end.
Left to right are Tom Brier, Patrick Aranda, and Frederick Hodges.

Plot twist: all the other piano strings are cut and this is secretly just Tom Brier on crack
Nah this is just Tom on a normal saturday
Just everyday tom.
@@edukg5668 way to discredit the other 2. Just cuz one is hella famous
there would be too many questions if Tom showed his true power in public, so they had to hire two actors
(joking of course, awesome to hear the different choices each of them is making in real time, the final product is over the top in the best possible way :)
As someone who has played a duet with two of the three individuals here, they are all experts at dueling pianos, Tom’s magical ability to follow anyone and is always down for change and surprises, and Frederick’s lovely double octave fills between the melodies, this is what ragtime is all about!
*was always
Hello. I'm very curious about how or who the arrangement came about. Listening carefully, most of it seems to be through-composed, including the five (+1) iterations of the B strain. Or maybe they've all just done it together enough to have it approximately figured out. Still, it seems to me more organized than that. Thank you!
Tom Brier, what a guy!
Oh yeah, I think there were other players there too, not sure.
JimTheFishTV He's my favorite!
I don't get why people get so upset about this being fast. It's named "3 Pianos on Fire" for a reason ! :P
I quote Scott Joplin when I say "TOO FAST!"
No, you don't, because he said "Tempo di Marcia" for this piece.
I'd have to be Usain Bolt to march at this tempo
No you wouldn't. The underlying tempo isn't actually that quick. The melody is just in 16th notes. See ruclips.net/video/judCkMCJgBA/видео.html for some period march tempo examples.
Usain Bolt literally took 18 steps in his world record run. He steps very slowly
I love how they all know the song, but instead of playing it, they play around it, if that makes any sense.
they improvise :D
This is improvisation, but not dissimilar to the great composers writing theme and variations where the main theme gets intertwined with multiple layers of addition music....the fun is listening for the original music, which is still in there, in some form or another! I loved this!
Error405NameNotFound you are SO ignorant about music. Improvisation is a skill which you obviously neither have nor appreciate. Get a life
isopath1 he is saying how he likes how they know the song but instead improvise on it
@@ethanl.1699 probably would enjoy it more live.
Just finding out that the middle guy was my music teacher. Holy shit I gotta go back to college and beg to be his apprentice
Patrick
That blonde guy knows how to use the octaves. Great piece!!
1:32 is my favorite part lol
Hodges is notorious for those kind of twinkling riffs and the wacked arpeggios
@@M.J.Merisotis also at 2:25 and 2:44, the pianist to the right knows what he is doing. He is creating new music. Those bits sound like mere new compositions. The power of improvising is the soul of these men.
i think it's awesome how almost all the videos of tom brier i see on youtube, he's playing at a retirement home in front of older folk. what a joy for them to see him play!
I've never known Tom to play at a retirement home. This was at a hotel during a ragtime festival. These people came to see him and the others play -- not the other way around.
Keeper1st oh...well I feel dumb now
Keeper1st oh...well I feel dumb now
And then, Scott Joplin himself appeared with a shotgun yelling "NOOOT FAAAST"
And then Scott Joplin appeared at your house shouting "Tempo di Marcia!" ruclips.net/video/judCkMCJgBA/видео.html
Well, according to that guy, this is played way faster that how it was meant to be played....
Thanks for the video, I've been searching for something like this for a long time
Pablo Sorbara Three jaded guys, bored with the tune, showing off. Ruins it.
***** And people have freedom of telling a fucking joke whenever the fuck they want...
Wow, SIX hands ragtime!!!
+E. Goldie A year later they did this again with 12 hands. ruclips.net/video/Jxup-5Z23FE/видео.html
And last week I posted a video with 10 hands on just two pianos (eventually, as more and more people join in): ruclips.net/video/ruQPj1m0mfo/видео.html
I'm from Italy and I was impressed by Tom Brier's skills when I first listened to him play thanks to this Channel. I was 13. This RUclips channel made Tom famous. However, watching this video now (for the 20th time maybe) makes me realise how talented the other two pianisis are. If someone of you ever reads this comment, please keep in mind I admire all of you. Ragtime is my top 1 music genre, and you perform it way too well.
Nevertheless, I'm still in pain today for Tom. His accident definitely made my life sadder. 7 years later, I still shake when I think about that. God bless Tom and all of the artists/friends around him.
"This will be our final number (Unless someone calls an encore which had better not happen cause we're out of time)."
*Crowd starts laughing hysterically*
Too fast? Probably. Too awesome? Definitely.
There is no such THING as too awesome!
They need to perform this again on high-quality audio!
Tom is no longer physically able. I do believe this performance was captured by audiophile Rob Thomas, so somewhere a good audio recording should exist.
A lot of people focus on the "it is never right to play ragtime fast" that Joplin put on later rags, or they focus on the "slow" in "slow march tempo" without thinking of the "march" part. The early cakewalk and string-band recordings of ragtime were at quite a quick tempo, thus Joplin's "fast" was relative to music of the time. Joplin's "moderato" sounds fast to today's ears not accustomed to stuff like Ta-Ra-Ra-Boom-De-Ay or the Orpheus Overture that were so popular in his time.
I would have paid big money to see this live.
I would do anything to see Tom perform today, seriously I'd walk to CA from Connecticut!
I'm so happy that this is in stereo!
Some guy in the beginning was like "I never heard of it!"
That was one of the performers, Tom Brier, joking around.
Keeper1st oh lol I was wondering that too
What part of "on fire" did you not understand?
Edgy bitch

Holy cow Tom at 3:43!
Absolutely spectacular!
The stereo is great with headphones. I enjoyed it very much, and I think I'm going to go back and listen to the others that are in stereo now!
Indeed, and they do play the melody recognizably the first time through each strain. On the repeats is when they go nuts, but that's standard ragtime playing.
Wow I had to check to see if I accidentally left RUclips on 2x speed! 😮 BRAVO!! 🥳
"I messed up. Let's start over."
" Could you do that again? I forgot to press 'record'. "
I can't say this wasn't the most insane version of the Maple Leaf that I have heard in my life!
It doesn't matter how many times I've seen this, it always thrills me to see what Fred Hodges does in counterpoint to the other two guys.😀
This is the best thing ever. Anything Tom Brier makes me happy!
Its so complicated every time you listen its like listening to a different song scott joplin is watching in awe from the stars
100-120 is medium to fast. (Consider that most rags are written in 2/4, thus a quarter note is one beat.) I've heard John Stark's son E.J. Stark quoted as saying that 100 was considered a good "default" tempo to play a rag.
I can agree with E. J. Stark, 100 bpm is a pretty decent tempo for ragtime, nice and fast but not TOO fast.
I don't care if it was too fast, I like fast. In-fact I love it! It is an awesome and thrilling display of excellent talent. I don't think there is any way the Maple Leaf Rag can be played wrong by any good musician, just different ways. I also think Scott Joplin would get a real kick out listening to a lively rendition of his music. Probably would have given him another good idea about rag too!
+Gene Kinnick Put it at 2x speed
+Chiseledquartz27 I can't even hear a tune anymore xD
I like ALL rag played at a lively tempo. The syncopated best lends itself to such fabulous windup
"I Am Speed" -Lightning McQueen
Maple Leaf is a barnburner. It should be played fast.
That was the best rendition of Maple Leaf Rag that I've ever heard. Great job guy's.
1:33 gave me chills so hard, sonds amazing
same
Possibly the most spectacular thing ive heard.
This really brought tears to my eyes. It was unbelievably brilliant WOW WOW. Why haven't I seen it before?
Is it Tom who's producing that left hand 'oomph' feeling all throughout? I love it!
I always appreciated this side of Ragtime music the most.
Alternate Title: "Three Guys Go Sicko Mode On A Trio Of Pianos"
great audio quality!
This is beyond epic. I feel joy coming from my ears!
THIS IS INCREDIBLE
That was awesome.
For hose of you complaining about the speed, kindly read the description; you'll find it says that this is mostly used as a "show off" piece. Now I think we can all agree that the faster something is played, the more impressive it sounds.
This terrific. Love Ragtime.
This is awesome
I'll never tire of watching this video
These guys are always fun.
Oh fortunate audience!!
Spectacular! Bravo!
It was good I love the music and tom I loved how you played and I hope I could meet you sometime.
A real fine time.Loving it.
Fast, not fast it doesn't matter ragtime is still amazing
I am so happy I found this gem of a video on youtube. I literally feel how each pianist gives their improvisation to the audience.
Bravo.
They accomplished what may arguably be a version that outdid Joplin's vision of his rag but one he'd be thrilled with...fusion of rag, honky tonk, and nickelodeon . Masterful. Riveting.
@@kowalskymnm Not sure if I should clarify or if you understood what I meant by nickelodeon. Not the channel (not with a capital N). Rather, the original instrument, which was an automatic player piano that was activated by the nickels people paid to watch the silent movies. It's that familiar lively tinny piano background for Chaplin, Keaton, and the others of their day.
Ah, I've always loved the tune of the song. Adding more complex layers only makes it better.
Love the FUN!!!
Joplin would be proud
that was awesome!
What I really want to learn is how to improvise along the way while still keeping the original melody like these 3 great players did its so cool...
*picks up the pieces of exploded head*
this is amazing.
Be careful listening to this track... you may receive a terminal dose of happy =D
Still Amazing
Awsome!!!!This performance makes me smile...Thank u!!
Virtuoso piano playing and collaboration!!! :))
"The Legend of 1900" A kind of piano player fairy tale. Great fictional piano dual scene between Jelly Roll Morton, and the main character of the movie.
Chills all over man!
This is awesome! Great performance of one of the best ragtime pieces ever!
OH
MY
JESUS!
Say "1, 2, 1, 2" or "left, right, left, right" like a drill sergeant on the beats. Sounds like the tempo used to get soldiers to march, doesn't it? The rag is marked "tempo di marcia" (march tempo). If you can march to it, it's a march tempo. So while this is a somewhat quick march tempo, it's still "march tempo" as Joplin indicated. Joplin's best friends were really hot piano players, so he undoubtedly heard and didn't mind this rag at a tempo like this.
you can march to any tempo...
Holy mother of god this is amazing
...though there is a song version. I made a video presenting it a while back which can be found if one searches the title "Rare Scott Joplin song -- Maple Leaf Rag Song".
Blazing!!! Love it
What fun! Great fast march tempo with tons of brilliant embellishments and melody turns. People who want it slow have never studied or played ragtime. Fantastic job!
WOW! Beautiful is an under statement. Lots of fun for players, and (Moi) me!
Suddenly, -Wilmer grabs Lissy, and slaps her in the face 10 times saying, "No" until she stops-. The end.
Wilmer Gonzalez played too fast.
fantastic
AMAZING!
ohhh ok i never thought of it that way thanks
If I could watch this video all day, every day!

Beautiful. :)
Bravo, Awesome, fantastic, wonderful, great, magnificent!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh yes did i mention that I really liked it!
Excellent! I really enjoyed their arrangement.
…
Best ragtime ever
Ha! I've listened to this so many times, but this is the first time I noticed this: at :19, right after he says "Maple Leaf Rag," some guy shouts, "Never heard of it!"
That "some guy" was Tom Brier, being sarcastic.
Keeper1st
Haha
Keeper1st silliness aside, think of how many people who really "never heard of it."
Jeepers!! Amazing! :D
Yes!
Just when I thought it couldn't get any better it got WAY better...!! wow.
I enjoyed it and could not help applauding at the end. It seemed to listen to the piano roll. So wonderful. They are great.
When you take a powerup in a game
Being a complete ragtime fan.....YOU SIR POST THE BEST VIDEOS EVAR!!!! (Yay for misspelling)
If you can see a, "Gorn" from Star Trek in the audience then you are either on something or a REAL trekkie like me. Hint, hes to the left. But seriously, these guys are awesome! Love it!
great recording!
That was fking glorious
like taken directly out of a saloon in the wild west!
You mean out of a Western movie set. This style of music didn't appear on the scene until 1897 -- in black communities in the South -- well after the typical idea of the "wild west".
Keeper1st Yes, that was what i meant
Ikr like in those Wild West movie the main character walks into the saloon and hears this with people fighting
Now if only I could get an endless loop of this play wherever I go... :D
I've seen some beautiful stuff by Tom Brier, but combined with these other two talented guys, this takes the cake.
Heh yeah, that's another thing. People often think "not fast" = "slow" or that "slow march" = "slow". The way I like to explain it is that "slow march" is like "large Chihuahua". It's still a small dog -- just large for a Chihuahua. Definitely Elite Syncopations is one of those that falls apart at a slow tempo -- particularly that last strain.
The guy on the left going ham xD
That is Tom Brier piano legend
@@that_one_guy8821 Now he is slightly broken from that crash :(
Standing Ovation !!!!
