finally somebody who really puts this thing to work and not just rant about it not being good at playing games... me and my IT colleagues were wondering who would buy especially the rack version of the mac pro, now I know.
Aside from music professionals, in any IT situation where you have a dedicated 'machine room' or 'machine rack', you'll probably rather have the rack version. For example if you want a server farm for like a Pixar film, you'd probably want one of these as the master and then slave server machines all in a rack or you could have a ton of these maxed out in a few racks almost entirely acting like servers.

I feel your reasoning to stay within the apple eco system. The studios at the college where I study recently (a year ago) transitioned from old 5.1 Mac Pros to windows. the old machines were stable, whereas on windows, I'm not entirely sure what it is but the combination of the new machines and the Pro Tools TDX cards combined with the D-Command and D-Control desks in two of the 3 studios (The D-Command is actually being replaced due to a leak from the toilets upstairs - being replaced with an Avid S4 which is very exciting) the systems are very unstable and is very embarrassing when the machine freezes when asked to perform basic tasks, such as putting 1 single D-Verb on the vocal send. just wished the college had hung on for this beauty of a machine.
Yes, trying to do music on Windows is just embarrassing. Some accountant who doesn’t understand has decided that move. When it all collapses, it turns out it was a totally false economy but, by then, they’ve blown the allocation budget on crap - so the Macs never get replaced and the course folds. The accountant moves on and is never forced to sort the mess out. Typical. Idiots thinking an OS designed for Office can weightlift DAW’s and so on. Utterly stupid. 😪
Steve Arkwright yes this is very true and a thing that actually happened at the college where I study. The ‘logic room’ as it was known, had older iMacs a few years ago running logic 9. These were then replaced with windows. Those machines were in for half a year before they ended up switching back to new macs. Great video, but it is weird that you work so well with audio but your voice in one part of the video is panned to the left, pretty hard to watch that way. Apart from that, I have so many questions about your setup!!!!!! How can you sync Logic and ProTools? My head exploded with your workflow!
The first thing I noticed is how the monitor on the wall is perfectly sized to give the same viewing angle as the monitor on the desk! (Reminds me of a friend who would "pull out the big screen", by which he meant pushing the couch closer to the TV!)
Monster setup, and makes complete sense for what you're doing ! From the amount of I/O you have, I take it you use lots of outboard gear at mixdown stage...or is there another reason for that ? (sexy Dangerous Audio/SSL/Neve processors you've got there too). Also, seeing you're mixing in 5.1 a lot, the H7600 I saw in the other video makes complete sense. Again, amazing setup, and I've very curious about your complete workflow. And yeah, compared to the audio gear you have there, the MacPro isn't THAT expensive either...
NicD5150 I’ll go over that in full I some workflow vids. If it’s 5.1, it’s completely in the box working on score mixes for the live action shows. I use the outboard for when I’m writing my animation music in a stereo mastering style - or when processing synths through it with sound sound design work.
Terrific stuff, I'm just a student getting started in audio production, it's always inspirational to see the crazy setups pros have. I'm just trying to figure out when I'll be able to afford more than a 2 channel interface, let alone hundreds of voices worth of DSP cards, and the all important lunch break flight to Japan for McDonalds. Jokes aside some really cool stuff I hadn't considered, like running Logic into Pro Tools. Would be perfect since I like Logic for MIDI and PT for editing. Of course, it's not just about the gear, it's who is using it, and clearly you've got the talent to put all of this stuff to good use!
You're pretty tech savvy for a McDonald's Pro! ;) I can tell you're an actual pro because you have the same Kensington trackball I do. That Magic Touch thing the Mac Pro came with has its uses, but I still prefer the trackball for most tasks. I've been thinking about getting one of those Griffin Tech PowerMates (or whatever the glowing blue dial thing is) for decades, but always wondered how well it can control different parameters. I'm assuming it is worthwhile if you have one.
Thanatopsis I had a Griffin PowerMate back in the Jaguar and Tiger days. I didn’t think it was supported any more. I’m guessing that there aren’t any 64 bit divers, but I could be wrong. If someone still uses one on a modern MacOS let me know.
@@mattbland2380 Mac System Report says PowerMate Manager 1.2.5 (different than the old 3.0 USB-only software) is 64-bit. Support.griffintechnology.com says some features don't work with OS 10.11 and is not supported anymore. But that sure looks like a PowerMate he has there, so maybe it does something under 10.15. But it could be another brand. Or maybe he just has it sitting there to look cool, like the Michael Bay sci-fi movie The Island when it was stuck on the wall in Ewan McGregor's room. I don't think it had a purpose, but it looked futuristic.
Hi Neil great music, great flow and daw. Can you show us your your externel gear in us... Like that ssl bus comp and others stuff for procesing.. from dask and rack...
Really enjoying these videos Neil, I'd be very interested to find out if you run into issues with threading as some VIs can choke one thread rather than equally spread across them all. Like you (were) I'm running trash cans, which do thread out from time to time. Be interested to hear if you experience this with the knew machine! Thanks for sharing these insightful findings! Really helpful!
Like most people here I know nothing about your profession and originally came here to see the Mac Pro, but now I am just interested in seeing your talents as a music professional. I think most if us will follow you in the future, to enjoy your talent and how you write, compose, music as you really know how to connect to your audience. I find this very interesting, keep making videos for all of us to learn and just enjoy! If you can make something original that we can actually hear with no copyright problems. Just the few seconds of playing sounded amazing to me! Enjoy your new Mac Pro, and I hope you make a ton of money for your company with it and the other equipment you need! Oh yeah I dare you buy what you want, with your money, for your company, to earn a living. What were you thinking :) A joke of course :)
So I would say I know my way around a computer and have worked with microcontrollers and in software development but I am still sitting here like what the f*** is going on and what is all that stuff : D But it’s a really cool setup
Well... I use the same laptop for both doing PLC programming at work and making music when not at work... Plus some graphics stuffs that might or might not be for work (basic small company situation), and... Well, it's basically impossible to get one set up that is good at all industries, I'd say. You don't need most of the specialized stuffs to do similar things, but all the extra stuffs aren't gonna help doing other things as well.
Any chance you can make a video on how you setup Logic and Pro Tools, so they work together? I'm an amateur composer/musician, using both midi and audio - I love PT and don't wanna use any other daw for audio, however the midi in Pro Tools is pretty bad. Been using Reaper with Rewire, but I much appreciate Logic's midi editor and workflow. Keep up the good work! Nice to see the new Mac Pro in a real life environment.
it is very interesting seeing your workflow. i would love for you to do a video pinpointing some of the features and software that apple has that you can't get otherwise that help save you time and sanity to get a better understanding why swaping to windows or linux isn't an option.
Yeah, the workflow seems crazy complicated to me but if it works for the dude... I'm guessing Apple is used because Logic and allowing multiple interfaces to be used simultaneously.
The Flying Sloth it ends up making things super simple and fast once the initial legwork was put in. Also my setup handles jumping between completely unrelated working scenarios easy with minimal fuss. I’ll get to it in some workflow examples
Really cool, man. Please consider filming doing an entire composition for a work on video (if you can do so while avoiding legal trouble). I know I, at least, would love to see one.
Awesome videos! Thank you for letting us follow you setting up the Mac. I wanted to ask you if you could do a video to present your studio setup, how you organized stuff, what gear you use, etc. Also I’ve been thinking about putting my tv on top as yours is, but I can’t fix it on the wall. Is yours on the wall or on a stand? Thank you 😊
I love your sense of humor with the trolls leaving negative comments. Awesome real life testing without the hype, genuine enthusiasm for a pro workstation. Question - I come from data centers and nothing with a single power cord could ever reside in one of our racks for web hosting, databases, etc. I was shocked that Mac rack is single power supply and $400 more. Is that a factor for you? Is any pro audio equipment dual corded? Like would you even be able to take advantage of it if it were two corded? I’m assuming aside from basic surge protection and maybe an APC UPS battery you only have one utility line and likely no live generator hooked up to your studio (meaning genset automatically fires up on power loss and keeps feeding UPS batteries so your workflow is not interrupted. ) For you, I’d imagine a blown power supply would mean you lose several days of business days as you pointed out earlier, you’d have to unplug everything and ship it to Apple or hopefully have an authorized service center within a days drive. Great reviews, keep them coming. I was briefly into music production back in the 80s when hooking a midi keyboard up to a Mac SE with a serial to midi interface for a sequencer was about all you could do. So seeing how you are pushing modern tech to very high limits is fascinating. Do you sell t-shirts like the one on your emoji? I’d buy.
Hi Peter! Thanks! Yeah, very few pro audio gear destined for studio use has dual supplies. You'll see it in the live sound and broadcast sectors though. I'm not sure how much the PSU replacement is, but thankfully it is a drop-in card. I may buy one to have on hand but Interestingly, I've never had an Apple computer's PSU fail in the 16 years I've been on mac. Before that on PC, supplies died all the time. No idea what's up there as I've always been on regulated power and always bought high-end PC supplies. I do have an inverter generator, but it's not automatic. If the PSU died in the new machine I would fight nails and teeth to get the PSU card. There's no way I'd remove the machine from the rack and bring it in.
Did you use a MacOS system before? Why did you opt to start from a fresh MacOS install instead of restoring your old MacOS setup? Fascinating video btw. I'm into my (hw and sw) synths so I use Logic on occasion to mess about with, but it's great to see how a pro setup looks and how far away I am from that world.
Great video Neil! You answered alot of my previous questions so thanks. I'm on the fence now, because before I came across your video, I was looking to get my 2nd PC slave. Fully loaded it was around $4k, but now I'm wondering if I'd be better off with a new Mac Pro and selling my current Mac 12 core cheesegrater and rackmount PC slave and consolidating to one machine like you did? I run Cubase though, so I don't know if that would matter, but I'd also run VE Pro locally if I went down to 1 machine. Any thoughts, pros, cons, etc would be appreciated! Thanks again

I can tell you're an actual pro because you have the same Kensington trackball I do.
This is so cool! Can you do a tour of the rest of your equipment? Would love to see that!
Hi Neil great music, great flow and daw. Can you show us your your externel gear in us... Like that ssl bus comp and others stuff for procesing.. from dask and rack...
Inspect Rgh Zrak I Buka I’ll be going over all this soon!
Really helpful!
stoneymusicman thx! Yeah I’m diving in testing now. Hopefully logic doesn’t give me that middle finger single thread as often :)
Ok. so now that your "kitchen" has been shown, where's that mcdonald "customer" now? Hahaha
The song at the end had me in stitches. Please release the mp3? :-D
Great channel... thanks for info on Mac Pro. Can you review your workflow routing Logic Pro X through Pro Tools?
These videos are so cool. A look into pro audio. So interesting.
So I would say I know my way around a computer and have worked with microcontrollers and in software development but I am still sitting here like what the f*** is going on and what is all that stuff : D
But it’s a really cool setup
I know I, at least, would love to see one.
i didnt even know there was a rack mount option till i saw your video
This is awesome to see someone actually using these machines to full potential.
Really interesting look in to a profession! Glad you are happy with you solution!
mario paint baby sound is the best
littlelamp100 YES FINALLY SOMEONE got it!!
Well done! You have a new subscriber. Looking forward to hearing your work.
Que genio... felicitaciones !!!.... estupendo setup, y estupendo videos, saludos a la distancia...
Here's hoping your workflow videos are really detailed. Maybe a whole series?
this so high tech and scifi, i love it haha
Awesome! Thanks for sharing.
Loved the outro.
Fantastic vids. I appreciate your uploads. Please keep it up!
This is a great setup man, congrats
At 5:02, was that my name is mud by Tim "Herb" Alexander? :-)
Bahaha yup!
Man those are some big genelec monitors. Nice
Love it!!! Nice to see you tingle around! You had surround right, do you have a sub integrated as well? 😍
Tarek Mansur yes. He even tested it in the video when he ran through his 5.1 Protools output.
Thank you 😊
it's on a stand.
Neil Parfitt cool! Could you tell me ehat kind of stand, because I cannot find one that goes this high ... 😕
Just earned my sub. Keep the content coming & will you be doing any tutorials for audio soon?
I love your sense of humor with the trolls leaving negative comments. Awesome real life testing without the hype, genuine enthusiasm for a pro workstation.
Question - I come from data centers and nothing with a single power cord could ever reside in one of our racks for web hosting, databases, etc. I was shocked that Mac rack is single power supply and $400 more. Is that a factor for you? Is any pro audio equipment dual corded? Like would you even be able to take advantage of it if it were two corded?
I’m assuming aside from basic surge protection and maybe an APC UPS battery you only have one utility line and likely no live generator hooked up to your studio (meaning genset automatically fires up on power loss and keeps feeding UPS batteries so your workflow is not interrupted. )
For you, I’d imagine a blown power supply would mean you lose several days of business days as you pointed out earlier, you’d have to unplug everything and ship it to Apple or hopefully have an authorized service center within a days drive.
Great setup!
This is insane but genius 💪🏿 This here folks is how you cater a workflow to fit your style💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿
Is it me or that celebration singing appears in the movie sing ?
Did you use a MacOS system before? Why did you opt to start from a fresh MacOS install instead of restoring your old MacOS setup? Fascinating video btw. I'm into my (hw and sw) synths so I use Logic on occasion to mess about with, but it's great to see how a pro setup looks and how far away I am from that world.
I don’t have a clue what I was looking at, but it was awesome to say the least!!
wow it's really interesting to how it's used professionally. Review people bash it because it's expensive but probably it's worth it for you.
I thought you were just milking the shit out of the Mac pro vid but this is a really amazing setup, plus a cool job to go with it cheers
Love this! I'm curious versions of everything you're running? osx? logic? pt? thanks!
David Andronico I’ll be going over all this soon!
Holy crap, was that a Mario Paint sample at the end?!The baby face? Amazing.
oh yes! Muahaha!
