The Plastic Love Photo Incident - Tales From the Internet
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 1 янв 2025
- Mariya Takeuchi's song, Plastic Love, became improbably famous online nearly 40 years after its release in large part due to a quirk of the RUclips algorithm that put it in nearly everyone's suggestions. In particular, an upload of the song by a user named Plastic Lover received over 20 million views. This specific upload of the song became an online nexus point where fans of the music became exposed to an entire subgenre of Japanese Pop Music known as Citypop.
The image on Plastic Lover's upload of the song, however, was not the artwork for the Plastic Love single nor the album it appeared on. In fact, it was a photo taken by a man named Alan Levenson, originally intended for the Miss M album artwork. After finding a video about Plastic Love by a RUclipsr named Stevem, Alan learned of the song's sudden popularity.
Although at first he was excited to hear about the image's newfound fame, he became embroiled in copyright disputes over the image with Mariya Takeuchi's current and past record labels and ultimately, this led to the removal of Plastic Lover's video, causing major online backlash.

Once again, a record company earned a windfall profit from a meme, meanwhile the little guy got the shaft.
@Leopold nope, you pay them for their work not some of their work. You order photographer to take thousand of photo and you decide to only pay for one photo, how's that fair?
@Leopold hmm I see, I think it's different between countries. Or maybe the photographers my family used just not using industry standard I guess
Professional successful entertainment industry working in major American cities, work viewed by millions.... "little guy." God damn but corporate PR has that mind control technique DOWN.
@Leopold this is so wrong, and youve probably never had a photo gig or a job in that field. They hire a photographer for an hour or two to take some photos then they pay the person for the amount of time the job has taken. They should have payed him, they ripped him off.

Poor Warner Bros. Enormous corporation with more money than you can fathom, doesn't want to pay a photographer properly for his work. They had no choice but to say no to him so that he has almost no options to exercise control over his copyrighted work.
@Yotecai Luz He's not "selfish and stupid," he's unfamiliar with RUclips's absolute shit policies. Wanting help for compensation ain't selfish. It was an innocent mistake with very huge consequences. People have been wanting a way to edit videos without reuploading for a very long time because replacing uploads just feels intuitive, so him thinking a huge website owned by Google can do that is kinda not hard to get mad at. He just has no idea how the system works and the hate mail making him go on the defensive hurts this all.

Plastic Lover's video is back, now with a copyright to Alan for the image, and with no ad revenue. I think that's pretty win-win, I honestly feel bad for Alan because artists and photographers going uncredited on RUclips videos using their work as thumbnails IS a huge problem. For example, a lot of Touhou fanart is now completely gone from how the artists, in response to rampant art theft, took down their artwork.
So, I'm glad everyone wins here.
To the Touhou fanart, do you have source to the rampant?
@@tereziakovacikova9738 you can try wayback machine circa 2008-2012 that's when I remembered a ton of touhou art and niconico videos in general being on RUclips without the creators permission
@Blan_K Nah touhou has been around for many years. Omae Wa Mou isn't really the first time touhou got some sort of spotlight.
True true, your explanation is way more mature than most peeps bitching around on Alan's respond.
@Defqon they are paid in such circumstances and have generally sold these pieces. Whereas alan owned the photo, it was his right to takedown what was rightfully his, No one else gets to decide what happens to the photo other than alan. The same should be true for the song but say if mariya didnt want the song on youtube a million entitled brats would probably send her hate mail too about how her decision was stupid and she should put it back up even though she should have the final say on what happens to it

I don't feel that Alen's that bad of a guy. He kinda got screwed over. That picture is iconic and as a photographer myself I can imagine being upset if a piece of my work became so influential and generated so much revenue for someone else without receiving any credit or compensation (you can say that Mariya's song is what really generated the revenue, which is definitely true in part, but I know for a fact that I clicked on that video because of the thumbnail initially and THEN got hooked by the song). The unfortunate thing is that he didn't understand how RUclips or the internet really works and, in trying to just get his name attached to what became his most famous piece, ended up being hated by masses of people who grew so attached to the song. Whole situation kinda sucks really. :/
Hi Lifg the job of the model also depends completely on someone else: the photographer. Have you ever shot a professional set? A lot of work goes into it. You have to find the perfect lighting, setting, action, camera settings, etc and make sure they all fit together perfectly to produce the most flattering and effective shot possible. You’re also responsible for your own equipment which is hella expensive. Sure I think the person who’s in the photo should have a say, but just as a painter who paints a portrait is the artist of that piece so too is the photographer who takes a well done portrait. It’s an art form and like all arts it takes a metric fuck ton of practice patience and talent to get professional, and that should be respected, rewarded, and defended.
True true. I think if we kinda explore in how Alan see things or from his perspective we could feel how bad and bertrayed he is. I think you explained this in a very mature way compared with some other peeps bitching about Alan's respond.
@Hi Lifg you have no idea what you are talking about, you are just being purely disrespectful and stupid, your idea of it being impressive is irrelevant anyways, its his photo he gets to decide what happens to it. btw try looking into how much photography gear costs someday.
@Hi Lifg uhm i think many jobs depends 100% on someone else...... a photo wont be there if there's no photographer nor a model.
being a healthcare worker also depends 100% on someone else. if there are no sick/dying people what else would you do? mop the hospital?
being an architecture depends on someone else. if there are no people/companies asking for designs of structure/s what else would you do?
lol i hope you get my point
@Hi Lifg It's a good photo. I doubt very much you could make something look that good if you had all week to do it. But unfortunately we live in an age where everyone thinks they're an expert on everything.

Full disclosure: I had no idea Plastic Love had a "story" like this around it. I was an anime fan in highschool, then adapted to have a taste for 70s-90s era J-rock/pop as I started college. Also, to my understanding, unless it's anime or vocaloid or idol group stuff, Japanese music is harder to come by on RUclips in full albums; I can only find one studio version of a Kazumi Nikaido song, and before Tatsuro Yamashita did some music for the movie Mirai in 2018, it was hard to find many of his songs and albums even when you searched. So when Plastic Love was recommended to me, I thought the algorithm was just picking up on my interests and it was just one random single that managed to be uploaded. I didn't even think to look at the comments or view count at the time. It's wild to think Plastic Love was such a big deal to such a broad and bizarre audience!
Ladybird G It’s relatively easy to find full Japanese albums not correlated to other media, you just gotta know where to look. Granted, we’re lucky songs like 4:00 AM by Taeko Ohnuki and I love you so by Junko Ohashi are available on RUclips or anywhere for that matter because both the Vinyl and cassette versions of those albums are very difficult to come by and very expensive.

@@LaYamiUwU no, the definition of future funk is same as vaporwave. Music that use of samples from 80's J-Pop / dicso / funk
So let me get this right Alan had no problem with the record company using his images when she was "kinda" known without getting paid but once she blows up on the internet he then has an issue with it? interesting
He's greedy bastard. Good riddance
No he was quite disappointed. And the video was using his art without even a credit. All he wanted in the video was to be credited.
@@brendalee1215 well he fucked that up then didn't he?
From now on people will know it's a lovely photo taken by an old git that doesn't know how RUclips works.
フレドリックフレドリック Yep using other peoples work without credit is how youtubers should go about their content...
@@jazzmaster909 the photo was NOT, WAS NEVER the point of the upload.
it's been deleted again... :(
Warner Music probably took it down because they just released a music video 10 days ago.
I've found that some 95% of conflict stems from misunderstanding. We need to spread the word on this situation, and hopefully help poor Alan restore his reputation.
*Your videos are like the good type of flashbacks*
Never new this song was so popular, just thought it was recommended to me because I occasionally listen to 80s - 70's Japanese funk and jazz
4:08 Man, the O player screwed that one up...
Also, yeah, I saw the Brian Peppers video in my feed waaaay before I actually watched it and subscribed to you. Actually, it was Vinny from Vinesauce recommending your video on John Titor that got me hooked. The Peppers vid was my second watch, though, growing up with YTMND and all.
I was already subbed when Vinny rec’d but if I hadn’t been, that would have done it
I listen to a lot of Japanese music so it wasn't a crazy recommendation for me. Absolutely loved the recommendation of course!
I'm glad the whole thing has been cleared up now.
You should make an update on the reupload.
Oh wow 😂😂 i thought “Simon Gotch Buried Enzo Amore” was popping up more than other videos, but I have a bunch of shoot interviews in my recommends, so I didn’t think anything of it.
Noel Torres same here! are all of Whangs subs here cause of a recommendation off of a wwe video???
DUDE THATS CRAZYY!! I always thought of it because I watched an old WWF clip never thought of it like that
Czech M8 I was bingeing wwe vids about this time last year and then whang’s vid on the wwe arcade game’s various endings and have been watching ever since
Yea! I think my first Whang! (hehe) was for that Fire Pro Wrestling “Darkest Video Game Ending) vid.
What an epic & sad tale for so many involved, it's like a blessing and curse at the same time for Alan
Thank you Wang. You got me into some of the best music that I have ever listened to. Thx alot. 🔥🔥🔥❤❤❤
The crazy thing about this is how the record labels were apparently ok with pirated uploads of the song...
There were probably fans who bought the official tracks as well, I guess they reckoned that the piracy was worth money they otherwise wouldn't be making.
The label did at first but then they were like “fuck it it’s too big to deal with”
A lot of old japanese songs are just uploaded by random people lol, not by any official channel I think its that japan uses niconico
They were copyright claimed. So all the revenue went to the labels
@@SpeakerFan Incorrect they were claimed but no money was going to the label in the Plastic Love situation for two reasons
1. The 8 minute version of Plastic Love is not an official released single most likely some kind of mythical fan upload.
2. They didn't have the rights for the photo and that could of done them in, in court.
3. They also were gaining mad press from it so yeah it did in a roundabout way benefit the new Mariya Live documentary, several 40th anniversary editions of older Mariya Albums and a new mini EP
I bet Mariya is super stoked to have more fans internationally to enjoy her work.
I want to thank the RUclips algorithm for making the original video so popular, just to have it taken down, and Whang to come in and make a video about it, that ended up on my suggestions, just so I could discover this channel.
That Brian Peppers is how I found out about your channel and never left
"The record label f'd me over, so I'm going to f the 10s of millions of fans over."
As always this channel is a great way to keep up with these stories of the internet!
Good video!!
Welcome back to Wavywebsurf, and today we'll be looking at whatever happened to Plastic Love.
smocaine lmao so true
ITS YA BOOOOOOOOOOOOIIIIII
Scrolled down looking for this comment
Wow, what a story. One photo, changed history basically and revalued an old photographer's work. That's pretty amazing!
This video introduced me to the story and the song, and in turn to citypop. Thanks Whang!
Me: *browses RUclips watching wrestling videos*
RUclips: SIMON GOTCH BURIES ENZO AMORE
2:35 Magical Sound Shower? IS THAT F'N MAGICAL SOUND SHOWER FROM OUTRUN? WHANG!! I LUV YOU SOOOOOO MUCHHH
its funny i was watching di-cast restoration and your video about the thrift store mystery body showed up in my feed im not complaining your now one of my favorite youtubers.
THIS IS WHY WE BOOTLEG THINGS!!!
Before it’s gone forever.
I bootleg things to litterally not contribute to the corrupt companies.
Most movie, music and even a lot of video games are just manufactured propaganda.
And that's why we save crazy clips off of RUclips. I have a clip of two dudes arguing on a subway about boning women. It's been deleted twice over on RUclips, yet I still have the clip 😁
@@Diggy22 That sounds like something you could see every Tuesday lol
@@Stinkyremy you dont buy anything/support particular artists?
@@jeppyjep Not at all, I dodn't think I have bought any music for myself since the early 00s when I grabbed 2 or 3 CDs at xmas. I have bought others a few CDs for gifts.
I don't buy movies either.
I do support video games but not souless corpo devs like EA, activision ect
And here I thought my 'impeccable music taste' was the reason it was in my recommendations xD
Loving the magical sound shower you snuck into this video
I watch so many shoot interviews that I didn’t realize “Simon Gotch Buries Enzo Amore” was an algorithm thing lol.
The fuck is a "shoot interview"?
@@michaelhaydenbell "Shoot Interview" is an interview where a pro wrestler speaks honestly about his or her career and about the professional wrestling industry as a whole. In wrestling two terms used often "work" which is working a match, scripting ect. the term "shoot" comes from shoot fighting aka Mix Martial Arts, legit fighting or just being legit.
Alan has the right to do this. Imagine if one of your works has been used without any thanks to you. I would be even more mad than him.
LETS GO! I love that the absolute classic S tier SF balrog theme is playing while you speak 💯
Alan should showcase all of his work around different countries in major cities and sell his work if he owns it. I'd buy some of his stuff!!!
Alan handled the situation extremely wrong
+CJ alicea He wanted the picture removed not the song.
CJ alicea The dude is like 55+ years plus.
Yeah but no. I was his art and he was left in the dust with nothing. One big thing artists get angry over is not crediting art.
@@fuchfred4646 yeah we watched the video. What he still did was in bad taste. Him not removing the strike further proves that.
Okay
hey man thank you for putting your research in the discription!
Only real fans remember when "Plastic Lover" was actually "Sona Main"
damn
I can still feel the nostalgia..
