  • A short on Denny Freeman, the Austin blues guitarist who played with Stevie Ray Vaughan and Bob Dylan.
Directed and edited by Jeremy Steinberger, this short illuminates how Denny Freeman and a family of young musicians including Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Paul Ray, and Doyle Bramhall helped turn Austin into a blues town. As the Vaughan’s rose to fame, so did Denny, becoming a staple at clubs like Soap Creek and Antone’s, before leaving Austin to tour with legends like Taj Mahal and Bob Dylan.

Early eighties San Francisco Blues Festival. My brother went up to talk to him and get a photo. He asked him;"Mr. Freeman" and he immediately replied; "It's Denny. Call me Denny". Right then and there I knew he was a down to Earth good guy. My respect deepened for him.

so true! he made my life a lot better for 30 years. just looking forward to when we were going to see each other, would brighten my day. I saw him last, face to face, in April '19 during the Lone Star Roundup weekend, we were talking about his old GMC and one I have that's similar. We kept in touch by email, the last ones during the freeze. Next ones went unanswered, I guess he knew he was sick and didn't want me to remember him that way....

Nice tribute! I’ve been hearing about (and listening to) Denny my whole life from my dad, who often jammed with him back when they were teenagers in Dallas.

@@allanramusiewicz996first the solo albums, in order of release:
Blues Cruise, Out Of The Blue, A Tone For My Sins, Twang Bang, Diggin On Dylan.
Then the Cobras albums, Live At The Armadillo and Live At The Continental Club. Then, Is It News from Doyle Bramhall (who is an amazing musician in his own right; another one we lost too early!). There's another Austin guy, Bill Carter, and his band The Blame is a who's who of Texas musicians; Denny played on several of his albums.
Denny's website, which he was curating before he passed away, has a lot of information about him and the various bands he was part of. There's also a discography that's pretty complete, and links to Antone's Record Shop in Austin, Texas who handle his music. Some of the recordings he played on are a little harder to find, but definitely worth the effort.
He was good and dear friend to me and my family, and we miss him. He would've been 79 today....
