I don’t know if anyone is going to answer, but I don’t exactly get what the saying was on the mirror? Can someone explain please?
"contempt" is like "disdain", a sort of hate for someone of something
Hugo sees some snobs he probably knows from the Iron Kingdom, and we can guess he doesn't really like them
What Varian sees is the younger version of himself, back to the time he was villain (I'm pretty sure the compound in his vial is the one which created the amber)
So when Hugo saw the inscription, he realised the thing Varian was despising the most was himself (or at least who he was in the past), that's why he tried to pull him away from this thing

I didn't understand the word 'contempt" at first either (I'm french), when I searched what it means, I was glad I could fully understand the comic, but also a little sad for our little boy
