      I don't think that's true anymore. After the Tim & Eric show and the Eric Andre show more and more people have gotten into this type of abstract fever dream comedy. It used to be a secret pleasure for most of us and then those kinds of shows let others in on the joke.

  • @NickRaven
    @NickRaven 3 года назад +542

    I know this is supposed to be a comedic video, but this genuinely, distinctly and specifically reminds me of so many work-related emotional and psychological burnouts I've had over the years. The length just punctuates how gradually the damage comes and how awful you feel toward the end. This isn't just hilarious, this is fucking art, a tome for the less advantaged, the wage slaves. Thank you so much, Vic, for putting in video form what can only be adequately described in psychological literature or in fleeting anecdotes.

    • @aimlesslost
      @aimlesslost 2 года назад +50

      Idk if this just applies to “wage slaves “. At any point in life starting in some part of childhood for some , this feeling of horror and existential crisis can happen because we can’t deal with the crass absurdity, disrespect , and routine pointlessness, even if it’s generally a part of life for most everyone . This video captures the experience and feeling quite effectively .

      So I work in nursing and have been brought to a point of spinning in circles, hyperventilating and laughing because I want to cry. Like, yeah, sometimes it's so bad that I start to think I'm not actually in reality. Sometimes shit sets off in a sequence that it's surreal. My only comfort is we all get burnt out, but statistically people are not anymore satisfied doing their passion as a career either. Apparently the obligation makes it less pleasurable. So, okay, I don't get to do my art for a living... maybe I don't need to. I'm a contributing member of society and I'm providing for my family. So even if I'm wiping up diarrhea, I'm fulfilling a purpose lol.

    I think this is what a mental breakdown feels like

  • @trentisdying4728
    @trentisdying4728 3 года назад +82

    Chapter I of VIII (0:01) - "Go To Break"
    ~ Steve begins his trial when he experiences a situation in which he feels disturbed and uncomfortable, yet everyone around him remains robotically entertained. He starts to feel overwhelmed in a way more intense than ever before. This upsets him deeply, but he manages to mask it and hold out until the commercial break. This incident has instilled thoughts in Steve's head, and from this point onward he struggles to stay as the funny-looking clown which the world demands he be.
    Chapter II of VIII (2:01) - "Your Eternal Reward"
    ~ Steve hopes that the wacky closing segment can get him back in the moment, yet is left in deep questioning. The robotic parody of himself, while amusing from an audience standpoint, was a disturbingly accurate metaphor for what Steve's life purpose has been reduced to. He is nothing but a clown, meant to make the most simple minded of individuals giggle like children. The interview from before confirms this thought. His race, his appearance, his diction, the essence of who he is- all to serve a robot's function. Steve feels oddly disconnected to the creatures around him, and feels scared and frustrated. This frustration haunts him through to his next act, where he looks to find some mental comfort.
    Chapter III of VIII (4:06) - "The Fool Doth Think He Is Wise"
    ~ After initially being humiliated by the child, Steve feels frustrated as like before. However when the duck is bought fourth, Steve is reminded of the childish sense of wonder he lost long ago, one that could find attachment to a duck, or anything in the world around them. Steve, on the other hand, was disconnected. Watching a small explore the desolate stage with curiosity and life in his eyes made Steve nearly cry. But that wasn't it. A different child, one who is wise in Shakespearean Literature, accuses Steve of not having any such knowledge. This humors the audience but Steve was hurt inside. Steve later remarked "I already made it though" as a way to jokingly dismiss the jab at his sophistication. But then it hit him. Did he truly make it? Was this really it for him? He battled his whole life through homelessness, failure, and hard work, yet he ended up as a plastic eternal clown. Made for the corporations to work him indifferently. Then came the finished quote, " *But the wise man knows himself to be a fool* ". Steve realized it now, he wasn't a wise success at all, he was a plastic industry tool used to entertain and pander to the masses. The child sermon felt like Steve was watching his own service, as the child he once was gone forever. His fate was decided. There was no next chapter. Steve woke up every day and he didn't have a reason. He had no purpose or meaning. His life had no purpose, no meaning. He left the show feeling depressed and empty.
    Chapter IV of VIII (8:45) - "The Message"
    ~ The next day, Steve oversees yet more children. This time performing in front of the audience with strange and intriguing dances. At this point, the people in the audience feel so disconnected from Steve that they nearly feel fake or automated. He sees the children perform for the horde and heavy thoughts start reigning in. The children were signing up to be like Steve himself. They were choosing the route that he chose and he could only powerlessly watch as the children sold their souls. He wanted to cry out, "run away!" or "you don't want none of this!", but he forced himself to keep his motions in check as he let the inevitable happen. Thus seeing yet more children sign the contract. The contract which Steven signed long ago. Steve didn't want to feel this way anymore and needed motivation to continue. He looked towards the next show.
    Chapter V of VIII (9:44) - "Dirt Is Necessary"
    ~ Animals, how original. When the animal expert held the monkeys tail to his head to mock Steven's moustache, he made Steve realize how similar he was to the animal itself. It was once a wild passionate creature, relegated to an entertainment tool without a purpose. Steve wondered how such a relegated animal can remain so passively happy and full of energy. He realized the answer; dirt. Dirt as a metaphor for problems, the settings in which immergence is created. The animals did not have a purpose yet, but remain in search for one with passion in hope of immergence. Steve recalled his troubled past as a homeless man. Steve was in emergency, and the root word of that is immergence. Steve felt as though the sad state of his purpose in life as of right now could be emerged from. The dirt of homelessness emerged him into wealth and fame, and now the dirt of his hollow existence will emerge him into something even greater. Perhaps the passion and drive of the animals isn't present in spite of the dirt, but actually is present specifically because of the dirt. Steve decides that his meaninglessness and frustration should act as a motivator to continue doing more, and to continue acting as the clown everyone loves to laugh at. He had found the motivation he needed to continue onward. Like the animal he truly was, he will continue persevering in the dirt to emerge from it and blossom upward. He went to his next show with restored confidence.
    Chapter VI of VIII (13:15) - "Dirt"
    ~ Here Steve learned the difference between soil and dirt. Steve is forced to ask perverted questions and gets obscene answers. He knows what it's all about. Everyone wants a little slice of that Hollywood pie. Everyone want's that contract from before. He can only watch in devastation as it happens so close to him again. These obscene insults to his humanity deeply frustrate and upset Steve. Any motivation he had from before was completely decimated after this show. Everyone was signing up to be the same cooperate tool that he was, and it was driving Steve insane. But what about his immergence? What about his optimism to find meaning? These conflicting emotions battled out in his head as he proceeded to his next act.
    Chapter VII of VIII (15:36) - "Do Some More"
    ~ Steve's last hope for motivation was a quote from his father. A message instructing him to always hold out when in times of discomfort. But as the scene continued to play out as before and the dirt continued to pile on, he was losing ground fast. There was that quote again; "The wise man knows himself to be a fool". And a fool he was! He scolded himself for not being able to withstand these activities and for being so emotional about himself. What happened to the man who could make his audience laugh and make the world a brighter place! Why was everything so heavy all the sudden? Steve still marched on, guided by those haunting words from his father; "when you think you can't do no more, do some more". At last he broke. Steve saw a man who looked just like him in the family panel, with the moustache and bald head and everything. He was being idolized. Why oh why! After being forced to watch people sign the Hollywood contract in front of him in agony all this time, he NOW had to live with the fact that he INSPIRED people to do it himself!? Steve couldn't contain his emotions anymore and ran offstage. He banged the side of the wall in mental agony. The quote was wrong. "when you've done all you can do, and you think you can't do no more, do some more". BUZZZ- wrong. Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong. Life has no purpose, no meaning. He could not emerge. He was trapped forever. A dead seed on concrete burring alive in the hazy sun. It was over. Steve was scatterbrained, in a state of numbness. He continued without thought. For years and years and years. He was a robot now, not an animal. And he was completely defeated.
    Chapter VIII of VIII (18:37) - "Hell Naw"
    ~ Steve all the sudden came back to thought. It was during an Ask Steve segment. As usual, he would put his mental thought aside and do the segment. But something about the questions just rubbed him the wrong way more than usual. He began lashing out at the crowd. Wanting to criticize their tendency to sign the Hollywood contract but couldn't find the words. He was talking to the plastic audience that he had lost touch with so long ago, and they acted as soul less as always. Someone in the audience told the story of a man selling his manhood for moneu remarked;
    "I know cash is king, but there has got to be a limit, RIGHT?!?"
    Ugh. That question pierced his soul. He was the one who sold his soul for cash. He was no better than the man who sold his manhood because he practically did the same exact thing. How can he possibly answer that question?
    BUT THEN. A woman. A woman asked of him a strange request. "It's your cookie duster, may I touch it?". Steve denied the request with vigor. His nerves were spazzing and he was losing composure more than ever before. He fell backwards onto the step behind him. He felt so alone. Steve recalled the sermon kid from Little Big Shots and started to cry for help. Before he knew it he was singing in the style of it. "It's so dark down here, I'm so dark down here". He was truly done for. He was sure that he failed the trial. And that it was over.
    "It's a cookie duster, Steve... May I touch it?"
    The woman approached him. Soothing hands spawned a cooling aloe sensation upon the moustache of Steve's robotic character, shattering it instantly, yet softly. Suddenly, the dirt became soil, the fool became wise, and the robot became animal. Steve was reborn in a matter of universe strings, having both finished and started his eternal journey to find meaning in the world.
    There was only one thing left to do now, emerge.
    "I don't want to host Ask Steve no more"
    And with that. Steve emerged, how else can I possibly describe it!? He shattered the material realms of wealth and fame and had achieved something much higher. One feat indescribable by any words imaginable. Thus, ending Steven's trial.

      Watch any episode of family feud from the last 5 years and you will see a man who is a prisoner to his vanity and greed. Like many people (famous or not), he built his identity by working, earning, and spending. These jobs were once everything to him. He would often remark, “I have the greatest job on earfff”. Three marriages and seven kids later, I think he’s reckoning with his choices. He’s a charismatic man who commands an audience; he’s changed people’s lives. His children are adults now, and I think he realized that even if he wanted to hang up the mic, he missed the age when his kids would’ve laughed at everything he said, and beamed whenever he walked in the room. The only people who would’ve appreciated not only his advice, but him. The only people who he could turn to for advice when he needed it. That’s gotta sting.
