220 and remmy accutips were designed for each other, literally. Still the best bullet for that gun despite being a little lackluster on knockdown. Barnes expanders were the hardest hitter for that gun before they disappeared. Almost as accurate as accutips too.
@@kenmaurer4743 i got some from my local sporting goods store. I also picked up some 2 3/4 because they're both much different and the savage 220 20 gauge can shoot both.
Since you live in MN now, Reeds is gonna have a crazy sale for thier fall expo on Aug 11-13 in Walkers MN. Might be a good time to stock up on some ammo.
This is what you get if you're in a shotgun only area for deer but want to get a bit longer range than a smooth/normal shotgun barrel with rifled foster slugs. The 300gr sabots also shoot very flat at 200 yards. After sighting in at 50 yards the hornady SST 300gr sabot slugs shoot dead on at 200 yard. This will group like that last group all the way out to 200 yards with the right sabot. We got a group with all shots touching/nearly same hole at 175 yards. A deer was taken at 230 yards and that's pretty darn impressive for a shotgun! My neighbor (cop) told me one of his coworkers tookan 8 point at nearly 300 yards with a 260gr sabot slug. Yeah the sabot slugs are best for this. It still does foster slugs ok but it's rifle like accuracy with sabot slugs. brenneke black magic slugs do very nice out of this too. It would have been nice to see grouping with one type of sabot slug instead of switching since they will all shoot slightly differently.
Just put out a new video on grouping 2 3/4" shells at 50 yards. Confident on which ammo to go with. Now I just got to dial it in and shoot out to 100 yards.
I purchased a 220 like yours but in stainless. When I took it out of the box and looked it over, I noticed sloppy workmanship in the receiver and returned it and picked up an older model that doesn't have the adjustable stock. I saw one of the newer model 220s with the right hand thumbhole laminated wood stock and, if I didn't already have a 220, would have purchased it because the plastic stock is cheesy. What I noticed about my 220 is that the magazine sucks. I read about problems with the magazine which rattles and is best loaded with one shell, making it a two shot shotgun. The gun is accurate, I have to say. I too started off with cheap foster slugs to get on paper then went to more expensive sabots for the final zero. I have fired Litefields 2&3/4" 7/8 oz lead hollow points, 3" Remington Accutips and 3" Remington copper slugs which, are the most accurate.
In my area - I have had better luck finding them at Fleet Farm or Scheels. The 3” shells has been harder to find. Right now they’re no where to be found due to the deer firearm season. It’ll be awhile before I will see them back on the shelf.
How's the recoil? I bought a maverick 88 12 gauge slug gun and use the hornady stx in 12 gauge. Everytime I shoot I bust the hell out if my lip (come to find out Mossberg's are notorious for recoil). I'm thinking of selling the maverick and going down to this 20 gauge savage.
The recoil is definitely a lot more manageable. I've tested quite a few slugs out of my Mossberg 535 (12 ga) and that thing kicks like a mule. One of the main reason I went with this gun too is that I wanted my 14 yr son to use this during the youth hunt. I made the mistake of having my son shoot the 12 ga and it scared him badly. After shooting the 220 - he very comfortable and proficient with it already.
I have killed so many deer with my 220. I hunted a rifle restricted in TX where you could only shoot shotgun or archery. This thing was a game changer! My smooth bore 500 was very inaccurate with Foster slugs. I bought this and put down 5 deer and a handful of feral hogs. I never had to walk far from the kill site as everything dropped in its tracks. The ammo is pricey but the accutips are very accurate at distance. The farthest shot I took was at 140 yards on a broad side doe. The drop was minimal at that distance. I am taking it spring bear hunting in AK next year. Can’t say enough good things about this little slug gun!
You really need to do your research before you share the wrong info on the internet. No rifled slugs in a rifled barrel they are rifled to give the effect of rifling in a smooth bore barrel.
It was NEVER a rifle. It was always a shotgun. Putting a rifled barrel on it doesn't make it a rifle. It makes it a shotgun with a rifled barrel. You can ride a horse on a road but that doesn't turn the horse into a car.
Yeap, That was my question, why is he shooting rifled slugs out of a rifled barrel? but he shot it and hit the target, and the barrel didn't explode, so I guess in an emergency you should be able to shoot either slugs
220 is not intended for foster type lead slugs
Yeah sabot slugs only
Yeah
@@Kjeddy16 YES EXCEPT BRENNEKE KO SLUGS CAN BE USED IN BOTH SMOOTH OR RIFLED!! NOT A SABOT!! READ THEIR BOX.
thanks for the video brother, I'm still using a smooth bore 12 g for deer hunting, missed a nice 8pnt at 40 yards, this video gives me hope😊

I thought your only supposed to use sabot slugs in a rifled bore and rifles slugs for a smooth bore
Yup.
Your right lol buddy about to mess up his new gun 😂
Best ammo for those 220’s is Remington Accutip I’ve had multiple that all shoot 1in groups at 100yds
What scope do you have on yours?
Where can I find 3 inch accu tips
Couldn't get the accutips, so went with Hornady SST..pretty accurate..my nephew uses the accutips..every pull of the trigger is $5
@@kenmaurer4743 i got some from my local sporting goods store. I also picked up some 2 3/4 because they're both much different and the savage 220 20 gauge can shoot both.
Do not use rifle slugs in a rifled barrel. Sabots only!!!!
Lightfield sabots are my go to slugs... why did you run a rifled slug through a rifled barrel??
I shoot the copper impacts through my 500 rifled slug barrel and shoot 1 inch groups at 50 yards. Not cheap, but a devastating round
I knew you were in SE MN the second I seen't the first clip of you hunting. Pretty sure I've caught some trout there ;)
I love my 220, i do not love the price tag of over $5/round though! Tack driver of a slugger!

I wish someone would make a quality sabot at a fair price. He probably spent close to $50 in ammo on this session.
Might try Reloading. BP Ballistic Products
If you getaway with $50 sighting your slug gun, consider yourself lucky. I’ve been there & my wallet still hates me 😀
Why is he using rifled slugs through a rifled barrel. Rifled barrel is for sabot slugs .

Flat at 200?
You are running rifled slugs through a rifled barrel? That is a big no no. Always match your ammo to the gun you are shooting
Find out what slug groups the best and zero it for that. Then shoot at 50 and 100.
Just put out a new video on grouping 2 3/4" shells at 50 yards. Confident on which ammo to go with. Now I just got to dial it in and shoot out to 100 yards.
One shot doesn’t determine the ammo the weapon likes need to fire groups
Any idea 212 vs 220 what's the big difference?
Accu tips are the best
Accutips and SSTs are awesome

I don't have any issues with my rifle (knock on wood). Will be taking it out this weekend for the first hunt, so hopefully we'll get it done.
@@JackT81 Any luck? 🦌
I took a doe down on my last day. Plenty of does. A few smaller bucks came through, but nothing worth taking.@@cloudbase7799
why are you shooting rifled slugs out of a rifled barrel? Shouldn't sabot's be used? Just curious. Hope to learn something new
Nice review. Where did you get those target holders ??
this is what I want for Iowa
You are supposed to use sabot slugs in a rifled barrel not rifled slugs those are for smooth bore barrels
WTH would you shoot a rifled slug from a rifled barrel?
What scope is that?
Any leads on where to purchase the Remington ones?? 3’ or 2 3/4

Are you having trouble feeding the 2 3/4 sell
No. I’m not experiencing any issues with this gun. It’s performing flawlessly.
If you don’t mind, Which outdoor range is this? Been trying to find an range to sight my shotguns at.
This is a central Wisconsin range. Wood County Rifle Range.
what scope are you using?
firefield rapidstrike 1-6 x 24
great scope btw
What stand and scope are you using?
This scope was the Rapidstrike 1-6, but I just swapped it out to a Vortex 4-16. Stand is a Caldwell.
Did he not say rifled barrel? Yikes, shooting rifled slugs and not sabots. 😮

@@JackT81 Much appreciated! I figured this would be the case, just figured I'd confirm.
I have the Savage 212. It doesn't recoil anymore than my 7mm-08. Way more pleasant to shoot slugs out of than my Maverick 88.
You’ll ruin your barell shooting rifled slugs in a rifled barell gotta shoot sabots
Dude quit calling it a rifle. It’s a bolt action shotgun. It being a bolt action and having a rifled barrel does not make a 20ga a rifle.

A slug gun it is, and a slug gun is a shotgun, not a rifle.

you dont shoot rifled slugs out of a rifled barrel. sabots. you seem like a nice guy, educate yourself before making another video. just sayin.
