    I found (by accident) a great way to sew with vinyl. I placed a line of 3" X 5" Post-It notes on the vinyl a 1/4" from the edge all the way down the length on the front and back of the vinyl piece, adhesive side at the 1/4". It sewed with zero sticking or tugging and then I re-used same sticky notes to do the opposite side! It worked like a charm. No residue remained and I didn't have to go buy new and expensive "Teflon" feet for my new Bernina 740. I have Teflon feet for my old Bernina (5.5mm stitch width), but the wider feed dogs on this new machine (for the 9mm wide stitches) didn't give good control. This is cheap and so very effective. Unlike the loose printed tissue type paper that comes between the vinyl when you buy it. I had tried using that to help sew, but it moves all over the place and cellophane tape will leave the adhesive glue behind, if used on vinyl (found this out by accident also!) Blue "Painters" tape needs to be used carefully, again the adhesive can be left on the vinyl when you remove the tape, and it is very hard to get it off and it leaves the vinyl with a hazy appearance where it was removed. I hope this tip helps many crafters! Thanks for this tutorial!

    Great tutorial! I improvised the cutting a bit to utilize my pieced scraps, but am very pleased with the results. I cut the exterior pieced back 16 x 18 1/2; I used 2 pieces cut 14 x 18 1/2 then sewn together to make the pocket out of pieced fabric that shows through the vinyl window and a solid fabric for the lining; I also used a solid for the back lining cut 16 x 18 1/2.

    Great tutorial. They say to place the paper that comes with your vinyl between the plastic and bed of machine and the fabric will flow through more easily. Had a rough time watching with those wonky angles. Pretty sure I was not the only one. Thought for a minute we were on a downhill slope. When one has a TBI or a seizure disorder, it messes with the psyche and throws us off. Thought you should know. Thanks.

    When adding the bottom and sides to the vinyl are you just lining it up with the first fold?

    • @dmscraftyvortex
      @dmscraftyvortex  4 года назад

      I use the lines on my cutting mat. I put the fabric down on the line. Then I take the already sewn piece that I have just added tape to the vinyl and I try to make sure the vinyl is also straight using the lines as I set it onto the fabric.

  • @Annekarrcrafts
    @Annekarrcrafts 3 года назад

    Dawn Marie,
    I have a question about these instructions. You instruct to cut 2 inches by the length of the fabric and then cut in half with gives you 4 pieces that are 2 inches by 22. (If you are buying 1 yard(36 inches long) how do you get the right length. I think that you probably mean the width of fabric, not length.

    • @dmscraftyvortex
      @dmscraftyvortex  3 года назад +1

      I typically cut whenever possible selvage you selvage WOF however if you use a directional fabric you will need to cut based on the fabric design in which case you need to buy a bigger piece of fabric.

    • @Annekarrcrafts
      @Annekarrcrafts 3 года назад

    • @dmscraftyvortex
      @dmscraftyvortex  2 года назад

      If pinning through the vinyl works for you then you should definitely keep doing it. My pins are quilting pins and I don’t want to dull them plus I love the speed and ease of double stick tape.

      @@dmscraftyvortex I like to live with the philosophy that if you can't say anything nice...which is why I apologized. I'm going through a vertigo "issue" right now...so it made me dizzy...LOL. I did love the tutorial though. very much. I'm just picking up cross-stitching again. I've started knitting too. I live alone with my dog in Alaska and with the pandemic I'm not going anywhere but to my stash of crafts. One needlework project was almost finished when I found it again that hadn't been touched since 1982. So, now I've made 6 fabric-only craft bags and wanted to make one with plastic and fabric. I tried to make this bag. I don’t think I am understanding. I am new to sewing and know nothing. I bought a half yard of fabric in each color and I don’t have enough of the main color fabric. I have tried everything I can think of and the only conclusion I can come to is a half yard is not actually enough fabric. I think I need a yard. Help please!! I really love your tutorial and want to make this but I need some clarification.

    • @dmscraftyvortex
      @dmscraftyvortex  4 года назад

      These measurement are only good if you do not use directional fabric.
      Out of the main fabric you need
      2 two inch strips -cut in half
      2 four inch strips-cut in half
      1 sixteen inch strip cut into two 16x18 1/2
      for a total of 28 inches. I would buy a yard to be safe as they don't typically cut fabric straight plus if you miss cut.
      The pocket fabric is cut 27 x 18 1/2 however if you want to just buy a half yard of fabric you can change all your 18 1/2 to 18. Then fold in half and iron do not cut. You will have a piece 13 1/2 by
      I hope this helps. If not let me know and I will try to go into more detail. Good luck!!!!

    • @lauriefox567
      @lauriefox567 4 года назад +1

      @@dmscraftyvortex when I lay the fabric down to cut. The 18” is the height and the width is however long the fabric width comes? Is that correct? You said you folded the fabric twice but then it isn’t tall enough. That is what made me think I actually need a yard.

    • @dmscraftyvortex
      @dmscraftyvortex  4 года назад +1

      The main fabric will be length of fabric typically about 44 inches by 36 inches if you buy 1 yard. You can then fold it to cut. If you fold it twice it will now be 11x36 inches.
