      Buy a nano protein skimmer. It runs of air only

    • @eric4052
      @eric4052 5 лет назад

      The protein skimmer is small and will fit in the sump area. You can even do a diy version. That should solve the protein on the surface of the water. Now the algae problem is another issue. The best way to solve that problem is to do more water changes, and that should also solve the protein problem your having . Now if I was you I would just so airlift tube. I would run it from the sump, and have it flow into the display tank. That way you can control the water flow for the beta.

    I had the exact same experience with this cheap kit. I got the replacement pump on amazon, just search usb fountain pump and youll see a million different cheap pumps. I actually just use air though to power the system. I used the included silicone tube that the original filter used, and just jammed an airline inside. So it now works as an airlift to power the filter, and aerate the water. Flow is reduced from the original pump though.

    A few points in regard to the aquarium. I hate to see it get a bad rap when all of the reported issues are due to a lack of maintenance or inexperience. 1) The pump in these units typically fail due to lack of maintenance. They do not have a pre-filter so you remove the pump every other month and clean the impeller chamber. Takes 10 minutes and the pump will last years. 2) I used sponge in my filter just like you and it worked perfectly as both a mechanical and bio filter. You just remove the bottom piece and squeeze it out in tank water and put it back. Don't clean the sponge on top. It get's little to no debris. No additional bio media is necessary. 3) If you get a protein skim on the still water in the filter chamber put your airstone in there. No more skim. 4) If you a get a film on the surface of the main tank service your pump. The provided pump is more than adequate for the tank. If you still get a protein skim in the main tank you may be over feeding or your aquascape may be causing dead spots. I have several of these tanks and use them for Bettas and have seen none of the issues you experienced. Research of various videos and forum posts on the set up all support the information I have posted here. Have a great day and thanks for the video.

    • @GirlTalksFish
      @GirlTalksFish  5 лет назад +2

      That #1 point is so key - doing maintenance on your pumps! I actually just learned that tip recently and wish someone had told me earlier. Good idea on the airstone in the filter chamber. Unfortunately when I tried that, the popping bubbles kept splashing water under my not-waterproof light so had to nix that idea. :P Thanks for sharing your advice and taking the time to comment!

    I agree with the final statement 100%. As someone who has purchased multiple versions of Top Fin tanks during such mega sales, including the Retreat as well as the Engage, I can concur that the tanks with the built-in plastic compartments are just not worth it. First off, any Top Fin replacement parts you may want to buy or need for these tanks is impossible to find, including the tiny, tiny pump that can and WILL die after not so long. The compartments are too small to replace with most third party pumps and filters. And yes, they all create these stagnant areas in the back compartments. I have alleviated this slightly in the Retreat by poking a small hole in the top of the pump tube, which helps to move the water a little bit in the compartment, and also weakens the output a bit, which benefits a Betta, but it would still be better to just buy a cheaper and more spacious basic glass tank and go with a gentle clip on waterfall type filter for bio media, and a gentle air stone for aeration. And another issue worth mentioning is not being able to fit an average size adult hand into the compartments to clean or add/remove items. The whole system dynamic in these tanks, especially the Engage, are just not very well thought out messes. Whoever designed them for Top Fin should not have the job of designing aquariums.

    I got this tank a few weeks ago and already gave thought about the dead pump issue, did some research and I found the perfect pump . Its a NEWA Mini Submersible Water Pump - MN404 Powerhead (18-106 GPH) and its diamensions will fit behind as its width is 1.4 inches and only slightly taller . I found the pump at INTANK an online store
    It features an adjustable flow rate as show above and is only slightly bigger than the stock pump . It also features the outflow on the top just like the stock pump . I have not fitted it yet as I'm waiting for my stock pump to die . I also have a heater and bio media in the back . So far so good . I also cut a piece of sponge and stuffed it into the tank output nozzle to slightly cut down the flow rate of the water into the tank but the pump is working ever slightly harder so not sure it that will lead to a premature death of the pump later ....guess I'll find out but that okay as I have the Newa pump ready to go .I am going to put some holes into the the pump line to allow some flow into the back ...probably in the next week
    My tank has a Indonesian wood branch , live plants , indian almond leaf and a show koi betta from Thailand with 1 snail

    Drill 2 to 3 (4 or 5 is fine if 3 doesn't work for you) small holes mid way and near the top of the output tube so a small amount of the water flows back into the chamber. It will minimally reduce flow back into tank but keep the water from getting stagnant in the back compartment of the built in filter area. The beauty of the hidden filter area is that it is hidden and self contained. I have 2 tanks both with hidden areas and zero issues with stagnant water once i drilled holes. I even put in bio filter rings in chamber to get beneficial bacteria growing in output tube area with holes. Can also put heater back there now as the water will be recirculated back into tank.
    I do agree that for a small tank a sponge filter is easy and enough, it is just they are so damn ugly. I prefer the fake wall and i can then put a moss carpet on it and keep filtration hidden.

    I have a Fluval Flex, which I love. It too has the little pump in the back, which has definitely slowed down some since it was new a year ago, but I haven't had any problems with gooey stuff in the back because it comes with a lot of built-in Sponge Filter that works for me. I too, however, have added a sponge filter, in my case to the opposite side of the tank from the filter to help with airflow and water movement. It's a simple and great solution!

      I have a Fluval spec 5 as well that I use as a planted tank. It's sleek to look at but the filtration is terrible. The tiny hole at the bottom clogs up constantly with even a tiny piece of plant debris and the top filtration slots also seem to block debris from getting into the compartment with the huge, useless foam block, and the ridiculously thin pump compartment barely leaves space for a heater, and also creates this tiny area where the water seems to evaporate daily in mine, which can then lower the water level to dangerous levels for a heater, so I have to constantly put new water into that compartment every morning. In my opinion tanks like that are just cash cows for companies like Fluval, which they create in the hopes that you are constantly shoveling them money every month for foam bricks, charcoal pouches and netted bags of bio media.

    there's usually loads of tiny pumps on ebay that should match what was originally in this kind of kit, have you tried searching in the small decorative table water feature sections? some of those are tiny and at least one of them must fit in that small space.
    Failing that, I would suggest trying one of the really small sponge filters that come with a long curved air lift tube - they kinda look like umbrella handles at the top, one of those or even just one with a 90 degree bend at the top positioned to output the water flow over the top of the divider should allow the divider to work as intended but air powered instead of pump powered. (search youtube for videos on diy air pump hamburg matten filters for a look at the kind of way this modification would work for you and solve the stagnant water problem in the back)

    • @GirlTalksFish
      @GirlTalksFish  5 лет назад

      Yeah, I found several small pumps that had the same dimensions, but the nozzles were always pointing the wrong way such that they didn't fit this tank anymore. Congrats on the new fish! No worries, we've all been at that beginner phase before. Brown diatoms/algae is very common for newly planted tanks. I was able to get rid of mine by a) lowering the light period to 6-8 hours a day, b) adding floating plants to suck up the excess nutrients, and/or c) adding an algae eater like shrimp, snails, or otocinclus. You can try any one of these techniques or combine. Hope that helps!

    can u connect a sponge filter to a submersible powerhead or does it have to be connected to an air pump?

    does the sponge filter replace the air stone?

    • @GirlTalksFish
      @GirlTalksFish  5 лет назад

      Good question! I actually have another video that explains how I use sponge filters with air stones (ruclips.net/video/BS7gIHUkhuo/видео.html), but basically you can use them separately or combined together. An air stone just provides lots of bubbles and is good for water circulation and aeration. A sponge filter also uses air to produce bubbles but it has a sponge around it so that it helps suck in detritus floating around in the tank (good for both mechanical and biological filtration). In my case, I like to put an air stone inside the sponge filter - it seems to make the bubbles smaller and not as noisy. :) Hope that helps!

    You need to insert a mini sponge filter in the compartment of the aquarium and leave the biological filter material next to it, and put a sponge at the outlet..

      I forgot to mention Fluval Nano that Filter has holes may has betta struck to it or shrimp suck up to it. I use floss to cover the holes in empty chamber .. I attached RUclips which I adjusted to my needs the chamber under the square sponge bio-media and the empty chamber floss. My does not make any noise. I clean all media dirty floss I squeeze out all dirt in a small bowl that dirty water I water my Pathos plant and start placing all media in the proper place and place the Fluval Nano back where it was and just let set there while place the decor and plants back in aquarium (soaking in aquarium water) then add 25% flesh dechlorinate water and then turn on the Fluval Nano Filter. I hope this make sense
