  • My first video blog! I discuss why I bought a BMW Z4 and not the Honda S2000 or Mazda Miata, which are two very likely alternatives to the Z4.
This isn't a video about how the Z4 is better than the S2000 or Miata. It's simply a video about why I ended up buying a Z4. So if you're here to debate which car is the best, my opinion is and will remain the following: I think that while they are all in the same class of vehicles, they serve different purposes and therefore could be considered best in different situations.

Great detailed video, good points. A lot of people that are commenting are trolling or never driven the cars you spoke off. The z4 S2000 and Miata are great cars. It's mostly down to preference. I've driven many Miatas because they are really fun cars. I currently have a z4 3.0si as a daily because of the same reasons you stated. I actually like it more than my old S2000. The lack of torque and refinements sucks for daily driving. When I had the S for over 3 years I had a daily corolla. It was fun for meets and weekends but eventually it was more logical for me to own one car. Now i get to enjoy the smooth z4 everyday. The E85/86 Z4 is actually more reliable than other BMW models. It weight similar to the S2000 and gets 25mpg mixed(lowest I've gotten so far is 21 with sport mode on) . Z4s does not get enough credit, it just had bad rep. Its a good combo of the S2000 and Miata. I'm glad you know yourself well and know what you wanted out of your car. A lot of people do not know that and only care about power and track times and forget about their reality.

Thanks for doing somejustice to this gem and the stable of E85 Z4 roadsters. Most of the hate must be coming from the Mazda and Honda fanboys. All the world's motor journalists are obsessed with JDMs and are very biased towards the likes of Miatas, S2000s, 350/370s and RX7s and barely gives attention or credit to this gem of a car. Overbiased motorjournalism and ill informed biased reviews coupled with the Fast and Furious Hollywood gimmick have all contributed to the rise in hype and value of JDM cars. But in reality, it does not make these cars any more better than the ones in the German stables. I have driven this E85 Z4 and in my honest opinion, it's one of the best sports cars I have driven. Seriously and severely an underestimated car. Chris Bangle's design is sublime and no modern BMW can match this flame surfacing and seductive styling which have been copied by other automakers today, including the Alfa Romeo 4C and the new Supra. The S2K was produced to commemorate Honda's 50th Anniversary and F1 tech was used in the enginnering process. The E85 Z4 had nothing of that. Just a replacement for the retro Z3. Yet Clarkson and his crew from the old TOP GEAR pitted the E85 Z4 against the Boxster and S2000 around the TOP GEAR race track and these guys know a thing or two about cars as they make their living driving cars. The non-M E85 Z4 beat the S2000 fair and square and more importantly, it is on par with the S2K on handling, power, and performance. Yet to this day, the Z4 doesn't get any credit or respect from the automotive community. I think this lack of attention is what makes this car even more seductive and attractive compared to the overglorified and over hyped S2K and other JDM models.

These motors are so easy to work on. Especially on the Z4. Lots of people do not realize that. First thing to go wrong is the SPARK PLUGS or COILS. Easy fix. Not that expensive. Valve cover needs replacement around 80-90k. Easy fix. Fuel pump will eventually give out. Time consuming but easy fix. I love my 03 Z4 and it WILL NEVER go to a mechanic. RUclips Mechanic University for the WIN!

As a s2000 owner I see your reasons... but I still love my s2000 considering, and I've driven the z4, not a bad car, but it's apples to oranges in my opinion for comparison.

Great video. I purchased a beautiful 2008 2.0i Z4 roadster a couple months ago and am madly in love with her. Absolute strangers immediately recognize it as a proper little sports car and I get loads of compliments. I look forward to checking out your videos.

a friend of mine was going to choose between a 370Z and Z4. he ended up getting the Z4 and i kid you not, literally 2 weeks after he go it, with 15,000 miles on it. the coil packs went and it had a faulty injector and it wasn't under warranty. cost him something like £2300 to replace. which is like $4000. its an absolutely stunning car and drives like a dream however. if you get one then just be prepared to pay heavily on repairs.

Why is there so much hate? If you have the money, go for the overall better car. I really love miatas, but the Z4 has a better quality, more power and is much more comfortable, so I can understand that. Personally the Z4 just looks somewhat ugly to me, but the design is not bad, it's just very individual.

He said 8 grand for the z4 and then called the miata a money pit lol, hate to tell you this but a miata is super easy to fix and super cheap compare to what it will cost you when you brake the z4

When you compare a beemer with JDMs and give even a bit of compliment to the beemer, be prepared to get unbridled hate from the JDM owners and fanboys. Especially honda fan boys. To them, their honda is superior to Ferraris and Maseratis and every single automotive piece of machine on the planet. Thats why we heartily laugh at them in our rear view mirrors.

If you can afford the luxury maintenance, Z4 wins without a doubt. IMO the curves and style of the car are miles ahead of the other two... and with 120k miles, my Z4 still runs in great condition! Only had to fix an O-ring and trimming. I get constant compliments with my Z4 from random people... BMW puts you on another class from Hondas and Mazdas. Good choice!

I own a 135i and I'm looking for an S2000. Given your criteria I think you made a great choice. The refinement, luxury, driving dynamics of BMWs are great. Much more livable than the Honda, much nicer than the Mazda. When you have kids one day, you can trade in the Z and get a 335i and have the S2K as a second car. BMWs are great dynamically steering feel, pedals, shifter. People who say it's for the badge have no clue.

Cool car man, but has anyone ever talked to you about your coasting in neutral habit? Waste of fuel and brakes and leaves you less time to drive away from hazards while fishing for a gear.

Wow! Such a similar experience! After perusing two Miata's at CarMax in Monrovia CA for about 12k, I find an '05 Z4 through CarMax in Pasadena. Nice clean vehicle - really shames the Miata. I',m redy to take it and zoom but while on the lot I get a call from a dealer in Cerritos with the updated '07 3.0i Roadster under 80k miles and we deal. I am having a blast developing a relationship with this machine and just as you've noted, not much to do in terms of upgrades other than some cosmetic stuff, preferentially based. I've searched many images on line and this vehicle as stock stands TALL! Some intimate touches include wheels and rims, caliper and brake painting, (opinion on powder coating of OEM rims?), license plate frames, (tail pipe tips?), stubby antenna, LED wind resistor, light kits (interior and exterior), (headlights?), wood grain interior kit... I am planning on being with this beauty for many years to come.

I had many miatas before, but right now I have a Z4 2.5 & SLK and it's been nothing short of great. They are all good cars in their own ways. What the OP said about the miata being a money pit, it's not the maintenance it's the amount of time and money that you have to drop on the miata for it to be somewhat on par with the Z4. For all the haters, German cars puts you in a different class than a Honda or Mazda and you know it. Stop complaining about expensive maintenance and all that BS. Every car has problems it's about you being able take care of the problems.

Honda S2000 is a legendary sports car and is a brilliant car to drive. The z4 is not even in the same galaxy with the S2K. You are in total denial if you think the z4 is AS good as the S2000!

Enjoy that Z4 - If I were you though, I would keep it - in Europe, the prices for these babies are rising, especially the 3 litre versions.

Just bought a twenty years old z4 3.0i, for my collection. I love to drive this car, I love Chris Bangle style, but I certanly love the engine! One of the best 6 cyl bmw ever made!
